"the faulkner focus" is next. here she have is. >> thank you. fox news alert now. president biden expected to cancel billions in student loan debt today. critics warn it will only fuel that inflation fire and shift the burden to hard working americans already struggling to make ends meet. this is "the faulkner focus" and i'm sandra smith in for harris today. the president is expected to cancel up to $10,000 in debt for borrowers who make less than $125,000 a year. republican critics are outraged. senator tom cotton tweeted biden is telling every college in america to raise tuition by

$10,000. senator rick scott says if dems want solutions here is one. stop wasting taxpayer dollars and start holding institutions accountable for student outcomes. former trump senior counselor kellyanne conway with this. >> it also is a complete farce that they already passed something misnamed as the inflation reduction act and turn around and going to make inflation worse. we are making things more expensive because they continue to spend money that we don't have on things that we don't need. >> let's dig into the real cost of this bail-out. according to a budget model a one-time cancellation of $10,000 per borrower would cost $300 billion. but if the white house -- it wipes out $50,000 per borrower that price tag jumps to $980 billion.

sometimes the numbers get so big it is hard to keep track and hard to really get a grasp of just how massive this sort of pay out is. >> it is massive. the bit by bit number is $10,000 for each person with student loan debt outstanding that makes up to $125,000 a year or a couple making up to $250,000 a year. that covers 60%, the top 60% of income earners in this country. if the president announces this later on today the cancellation of 10k and four-month pause -- extension on the pause of the repayments progressives are saying, $10,000? wait, we want 50,000 and moderates are saying that's just not fair. >> do you worry from your side of the aisle that there will be people that say i paid off my loans, or people that don't go to college saying why do i forgive this?

used, sandra, was alleged when referring to the inflation reduction act. this should do away with the concept it was an inflation reduction act. it was a fraud and mislabeling and bait and switch. it would have been outlawed. it is outlawed in most consumer transactions. it was not meant to be reduction in inflation. we knew days later almost every single media institution began to parrot the lines of the administration it is a climate change bill. look, we don't have to peer into their language use. now we look at the motivations. this proposed bill would, as everyone recognizes, extend hyper inflate inflation. showing the motivation were never to help average americans out there with the cost of groceries. it sto play to a constituency. that constituency in your lead-in. what really stood out was that report and statement from the

naacp. so the naacp is recognizing hey, this hurts the average black voter, the average american. the non-college graduate american who pays for the bill. what's the constituency? increasingly looks like some type of elite or aspirational elite college educated liberal voter who wants their relief. who wants their support from the government bureaucracy. >> it is hard to digest this. college costs real versus adjusted for inflation and you see these prices continually going higher. will, if you fall into the category in this country of somebody happy to have your debt waived and paid for by other americans, you will have to deal with this sooner or later whether it's your children or your grandchildren. what does this do to address those soaring costs? why aren't we talking about that? >> look at that chart.

that is actually stunning. sandra, nothing i just said should be read as someone who thinks that what's going on in college with cost and by the way the return on investment of a college degree is acceptable. that it is just and appropriate market forces. it is most certainly not. basic law of economics, if the government subsidizes something and makes payment responsible for a third party, meaning the consumer and the seller aren't actually the true transaction there, you get rising costs. healthcare the exact same thing as college education. it is hyper inflationary just like education. so the appropriate -- i struggled with this. what's the metaphor for forgiving college debt. someone addicted to heroin going through withdrawals. the only thing we can do is give them another bump of

heroin. this bill would only serve to hurt the long-term equation. it would raise the cost of college once again. >> forgiveness down the road will have to be bigger and bigger. not only that the far left democrats, some of these progressives, this isn't even enough for them. cori bush tweeted student debt is a $2 trillion crisis. potus must cancel all of student debt. senator bernie sanders staff tweeted this. republicans will attack forgiving $10,000 as much as if biden canceled all student debt. think big or go home. cancel all of it. to your point, where does this end? final thought. >> it never ends. what do you do for the next generation? what about the next people to take on college debt? it is like illegal immigration. do you just continue to give out dreamer status and pathway

hundreds of thousands. we need to treat it like a threat it is. it is unconventional warfare against the united states. >> sandra: casey stiegel is in eagle pass, texas for us. an incredibly deadly week for many of these migrants right where you are. >> yes, it really has been. in fact, the del rio sector has become ground zero, it seems, of this crisis. in the past week that we have been down here, at least seven migrants have drowned in the rio grande river attempting to illegally cross, and we have physically seen them recover some of those victims, air boats usually pull them from the water and bring them to shore. this is video from last wednesday from this vantage point in eagle pass. officials here tell us they have been averaging at least one a day since august in the del rio sector, border patrol says there have been more than 200 migrant fatalities so far

borrowers of federally backed student loan that haven't been paying their student loan debt because it was deferred. it started under donald trump and continued under joe biden. the cap is for people who make less than $125,000 a year. last time i checked none of those folks are the ultrawealthy. they are middle class working families, many healthcare workers, firefighters, police officers, or their children of these professions struggling to make the student loan payments each month. >> sandra: i understand that could be the case in new york, new jersey, on the coast. but in the middle of the country those that are making $124,000 a year, college graduates have the ability to pay off this debt? cassie quick on that before i move on. >> 60% of debt holders are upper middle class and rich. a lot of people would disagree with your assessment of middle class, richard.

biden is telling every college in america to raise tuition by $10,000 and the thought it could push the college prices higher and larry hogan, the maryland governor told bret baier waiving the debt is penalizing the people who worked three jobs to pay things off right now. >> so many points there. senator scott's point, it is not fair and where people are now. they see a lot of unfairness now and democrats pushing policy position which pushes for unfairness. it doesn't sit right with people. i would also note people would rather see the gas prices go back to norms to that less than $3. people still paying close to $4 a gallon. let's work on energy independence to bring down those costs for everyone as opposed to this cost which only helps some. that's the broader story here.

democrats seem to keep spending more of our money on things that don't actually get to the heart of an issue. one other point to that is that why aren't we talking about how to fix the cost of tuition or how to get more benefit out of all that money you pay towards tuition? why isn't that where the heart of this conversation is now? that doesn't sit well with people, either. >> sandra: we talked about the same thing with will cain. richard, as greg price tweets this. 37% of americans have a four-year college degree. 13% have graduate degrees. a full 56% of student loan debt is held by people who went to grad school. biden's plan to cancel would be like taking money from a plumber to pay the debt of a lawyer. that's what the country is seeing happen right now no matter what you call this, richard. final from you. >> listen, i get how folks at home feel. i think what this requires is a little clear eyed realism. the truth is most lawyers make over $125,000 a year.

>> sandra: out rage in fairfax county, virginia after parents learn a twice charged sex offender worked as a middle school guidance counselor for nearly two years. officials took immediate steps to fire him after learning of his criminal history. the parents, the virginia attorney general and governor are demanding answers as to how this could have happened. chief washington correspondent mike emanuel has the story for us. how did this fall through the cracks >> a lot of parents are asking that question. police tried notifying the school about this guy in november 2020 and emails never reached the superintendent. thornton was arrested in chesterfield county virginia for solicitation of prostitution from a minor in november 2020 and convicted on march 11th of this year and put on probation and then arrested a second time on june 9th for soliciting prostitution during a sting operation.

fairfax notified the public schools by phone on june 10th. a week later he was placed on unpaid leave. virginia authorities are looking into it. the virginia department of corrections is opening a full investigation regarding this incident and the department is prepared to take any and all necessary actions following the results of the investigation. virginia governor glenn youngkin says fairfax county blew it. >> this circumstance in fairfax county is a colossal failure on the local level from law enforcement and from the school board and superintendent. to have someone who in fact has been arrested for soliciting sex from a minor on staff for 20 months and then to be arrested again. >> dr. reid is the new superintendent of fairfax county public schools. she started her job on july 1st. reid wrote to parents last week i want to make this very clear. this entire situation is unacceptable from any
