descending into poverty. the most advanced continental and the planet, the birthplace of western civilization is getting much poorer, moving backwards at a high speed. just a year ago, europe was in a modern place. the overwhelming majority of europeans filled their homes with natural gas, as modern people do. in germany, the world's richest country, only about 6% of households heated their homes with -- and you can expect that given that germany is a modern, industrialized country, with central heating, indoor plumbing, the trappings of a modern society that has -- last year, only 6% of germans used wood to get their homes, but it's risen so fast, the demand, that there is none left to buy. so now, germans are cutting their own, scouring the forest

germany's prices for electricity of the benchmark f for all of europe, which just exceeded a thousand euros for the first time in history. just a week ago, last monday, the cost was about 700 euros, a record. in other words, that price was approaching 50% rising in a single week. in france, it rose 25% in one day, last friday. here is what europe looks like tonight. because this long, hot summer gives way to what officials worry could be a bitterly cold winter. skyrocketing energy prices have put europe -- what is described as a hybrid war. russia uses resources uses resources "like it does food."

will spiraling energy costs affect all this? when the cost of keeping your apartment warm jumps 100% per year, you become a completely different person. you don't want -- $1400 iphone, shopping at whole foods, even picking up and exta cappuccino. the economy grinds to a halt because -- so it's impossible to overstate the downstream effects of this on -- how are central banks responding to this? not well. seems to be making things worse. in the united states, we seem to -- we are told not to notice what the fed does. they are announcing that "leadership of the federal reserve has become its most -- that are more female, black, and gay officials contributing to the fed's decision -- over time year

history." in other words "relax, we've got affirmative action, everything fine." the same central banks that intentionally caused inflation, the central banks that are hiking rates -- destroying demand. the problem is, this is not a demand problem, this is a supply problem. it stems primarily from the work in -- the war in ukraine. because of the outcome of the west doesn't have enough energy to maintain its economy and society. your response to that war is by imposing sanctions that they knew would inevitably cause energy shortages. they knew it when they did it. here is the president of the european commission back in may. >> i would like to be clear: it will not be easy, because some member states are strongly dependent on russian oil, but we simply have to do it, so today, we will proposed to ban all

russian oil from europe. >> are you going to be keeping your apartment at 49 degrees fahrenheit? will you be walking to work? of course not, you will have everything you want, but the rest of us "simply have to do it." it's not just energy being affected by these sanctions. russia wanted -- it says that food shortages are inevitable in russia. >> president biden: in regards to a food shortage, yes we did discuss this. it's going to be real. the price of the sanctions has not just imposed upon russia. it's imposed upon a lot of countries as well, including european countries and our country as well. >> so we are going to have to buckle down for freedom, shovel billions to ukrainian oligarchs. hate the united states because it's the right thing to do.

so, did these sections hurt russia? they caused energy shortages in the last. russia today has more than enough energy than a canoes itself. they have so much excess natural gas, but it's simply setting it on fire, flaring it, as they say. they are burning $10 million worth of natural gas every day. seems like it should be a big story. the media coverage -- "scientists are concerned about the large carbon dioxide -- exacerbate the melting of arctic ice. that is your concern for global warming? but, the immediate effect is to make it impossible for people to stay warm. you can reach a place in your society where the people in charge and the media become so completely disconnected from the

concerns of actual people, so totally uninterested in the lives of their citizens, society is very volatile, and we are fast approaching that. the war and ukraine -- we establish energy flows into europe. is joe biden doing that? other reckless leaders like boris johnson, are they doing that? no, they are getting billions more from dying economies to ukrainian oligarchs for no good reason. $2.8 billion to ukraine, and a country where 70% of -- because they can't afford electricity. the government is preparing for power outages in the middle of winter. as the guardian reported "this official debut -- could experience blackouts of several days in january if cold weather combines gas shortages."

of course cold-weather will combine with gas shortages, because that is when people use gas: when the weather is cold. it's not just happening in the u.k., it's happening everywhere. spain -- 50 million euros for ukraine, not including funding for military. another news, congress just implemented temperature controls on commercial buildings. air conditioning must be no cooler than a 27 degrees celsius, 80 degrees fahrenheit. after 10:00 p.m., shop windows and -- public windows will be lit. italy has allocated more than 600 million euros for ukrainian refugees, but at the same time, air conditioning and italian schools and public buildings -- that the government labeled "operation thermostat" that began in may. italy's ukraine funding is not quite as much as france. francis had $2 billion -- to the

it there first before here. as far as the energy, yes, end the war in ukraine, lift the sanctions against russia. they are doing former damage to us than they are to russia. that's part of it, but here's the problem, certainly since biden came in he has done everything in his power to effectively stop the investment of capital in the energy sector. capital has migrated away from energy. we have not built a new refinery in the united states since the 1970s. he canceled the keystone pipeline. the problem with those things is that it takes years to build the infrastructure, so you don't see energy flows improve. lost touch with another reality. 30-40 years ago, we had huge populations in india and china and the new economies of demand energy. >> we are lifetimes away from
