>> sandra: new at 2:00, is the united nations finally beginning to face reality in china after months of mysterious delays, a new report calling out possible crimes against humanity and condemning the persecution of religious minorities. >> john: will the bombshell report change anything for the international body that has been infamously ineffective, or the woke american corporations who have turned a blind eye. >> sandra: nikki haley will be joining us in a moment. welcome back as "america reports" rolls into hour two, i'm sandra smith in new york. great to be with you. >> john: great to be with you this hour.
11:01 am
i'm john roberts in washington. before we get to china, we begin with president biden pushing back, and the critics who say he is demonizing half the nation. it's a fox news alert. >> donald trump and the maga republicans represent an extremism that threatens republic. quality and democracy are under assault. they spread fear and lies, told for profit and power. maga republicans do not respect the constitution. maga forces are determined to take this country backwards. they embrace anger. they thrive on chaos. they live not in the light of truth but in the shadow of lies. maga republicans look at america and see carnage and darkness and despair. they spread fear and lies.
11:02 am
lies told for profit and power. maga republicans are destroying american democracy. >> sandra: you'll notice the red backdrop there, some say fitting as he doubled down on his attacks as maga republicans. >> john: and a marine back there in the speech that was political, but critics say he's lumping together more than 74 million americans who did not vote for him. >> in the past two years joe biden has launched an assault on the soul of america. when the president speaks tonight at independence hall the first lines out of his mouth should be to apologize for slandering tens of millions of americans as fascists. >> i'm very disapointed the president would call people who
11:03 am
don't agree with him those kind of names. i think he's made a political mistake. >> clearly biden wants to keep trump in the headlines. you know, sounded like his campaign launch against president trump. >> which he's engaging in political attacks on 74 million americans who voted for republicans in the last election. but then again, what would you expect joe biden to talk about. he can't run on his own record. >> let's get reaction from nikki haley, former south carolina governor and former ambassador to the u.n. for those of us that watched the speech and a bit of it there, we long for the moment where this country can come together. was last night's -- what did you see the attempt by this president last night? who was he speaking to? >> sandra, it was one of the most unbelievable things i've seen in a long time. he looked like he was in the depths of hell, he's got military uniform -- military
11:04 am
officers behind him, i hate they had to sit behind him as he was talking about how half the country are basically domestic terrorists. we are not extremists because we want our kids to ride the bike down the street and not worry about something happening to them. we are not extremists because parents want to make sure their kids learn the basics and not worry about what pronoun they are called behind their back. not extremists because of the illegal crossing of the border does matter and rule of law matters. we are not extremists because we see how distracted this administration is and how dangerous the world is becoming. we are not extremists because we are struggling to be able to afford groceries and not necessarily have the childcare. it's unthinkable that he would be so condescending and criticize half of america for just wanting our country to go
11:05 am
back to where it was when the economy was good, when streets were safe, when the rule of law mattered. the idea that he condemned us was worse than hillary calling us deplorables, worst thafr obama calling us extremists, he basically called us bad people and that's not a president i want. i don't think that's a president most americans want, in a time we are looking at how divided our country is, we are begging, begging for things to go back to normal, and joe biden just proved he's the last person that's ever going to help us get things back to normal. it's why the races in november matter, it's why every one of us needs to show up and why we need to show him just because we are americans, that appreciate the good of our country doesn't make us bad. >> john: you know, our peter doocy a little while ago had an opportunity to ask the president about his speech last night. listen to the exchange.
11:06 am
>> mr. president, do you consider all trump supporters to be a threat to the country? >> no, everyone, come on. >> come on, i don't consider any trump supporter a threat to the country. i do think anyone who calls for the threat of violence, refuse to acknowledge an election has been won, insists upon changing the way in which the rules you count votes, that is a threat to democracy. >> john: a little difficult to hear there, but the president says i don't consider any trump supporters a threat to the country. however, quoting from the speech last night. no question the republican party today is dominated, driven and intimidated by donald trump and the maga republicans and that is a threat to this country. he said it. >> these are americans who are
11:07 am
just trying to make ends meet. these are americans who are spending $6,000 more this year than they were last year. these are americans who are going into credit card debt because of the things he has done. these are americans trying to understand why he would go and have people who didn't go to college pay for people who did go to college. so, look, for a president to go and give a national primetime speech in front of military officers, and i'm the wife of a combat veteran, and the sister of a combat veteran, the idea he would give such a massively partisan speech that degraded half of the country in the eyes of the world, i don't know any democrat that can stand by that and say that that was ok. >> sandra: what's the plit cam impact. >> political impact -- i think that anybody that saw that felt
11:08 am
uncomfortable. i think any moderate democrat that saw that would have felt very uncomfortable. i think the progressives probably loved it, i think the socialists loved it, but any freedom-loving american that looked at that would have felt bad about the bright red backdrop with the president lecturing the rest of the country on who is right and who is wrong and who is good and who is bad. you see this in other countries. you don't see this dictator type language coming out of the president of the freeest country of the world. if he keeps this up, he's got serious, much more serious problems come november. >> john: you mentioned this a moment ago, this type of name calling has now been inscribed in the play back, and 2016, hillary clinton here talking about the basket of deplorables. >> you could put half of trump supporters into what i call the basket of deplorables. [laughter]
11:09 am
right? the racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, islamphobic, you name it, and there are people that. he has lifted them up. >> john: that was a turning point in the 2016 campaign. it really fired up republican voters. what do you think will happen this time around? >> i think biden has totally taken that up a notch. i think he's totally kind of taken it to a whole new level. and look, i will tell you the democrats have become a bunch of elitists. i mean, these are people who now think that parents can't decide the schools their kids should go to. these are people who think that they should decide whether we fund police or not. these are people who suddenly think they are going to pick whose college loans get paid off and whose don't. everything they have done, these are people who don't think minorities are capable of doing
11:10 am
to a dmv and getting an i.d. to go vote. everything they continue to do is more and more elitist, and we have to be very careful. they are wanting government to take care of everyone, government to decide everything. and now basically biden wanted america to realize that government will tell you who the good americans and the bad americans are. and how dangerous this threat is. the only threat was the man at that podium with a backdrop of hell sitting there lecturing americans on the road that we are going down. it's a road he's taking us down and a road we have to stop. republicans have to stop complaining, we have to get to work. time to stand up and take our country back. >> sandra: ambassador, great to get your thoughts on that. the human rights report on the repression of uyghur muslims in china, chronicles serious human rights violations that may
11:11 am
constitute international crimes, in particular crimes against humanity. "wall street journal" op-ed saying it should force a debate in the u.n. general assembly, ab and see if the muslim nations -- or if they will sell out. >> interesting enough, in 2018, i was giving speeches at the u.n. security council complaining about what was happening in china. and the person in charge of human rights, michelle bashalay, had a report, it took her five years to come out with this report. she just went to china, was heavily praised in china, and interestingly enough, she drops this report 20 minutes before the end of her term. and what does this report say? what we have known all along. mass torture, massive rape, forced sterilizations, forced abortions. this is the chinese party
11:12 am
sitting there basically trying to eliminate an entire group of people. that's called genocide. that's called genocide and we swore never again to look the other way at that. this is not just something the united nations needs to handle, this is something america needs to look at, specifically our american corporations. how much profits are coming from the fact that is forced labor that is being done so that american companies can get more dollars. we've got to start acknowledging these people who are begging, begging for some sort of safety, and say that we are not going to be a part of it. so it's not just the u.n., it's america, it's american companies. we need to look at what's happening to these people and make sure we always fight for human rights in that process. >> john: ambassador, just before we go, there was the story that was out earlier in the week of a lot of very prominent donors supporting you were made public. you were accusing letitia james,
11:13 am
new york attorney general, of leaking that list. what do you say to her? >> interestingly enough, i'm not accusing her. it was the new york state attorney general stamp that was on the tax return that was given to the press. so i know it came out of her office. and what i'm telling her is get ready for a lawsuit because we are coming after you. we are suing the new york state attorney general's office and we are going to make sure we expose her for what it is and i hope everybody will join us that stand for america.com and helping us go after her and let us know you did this to president trump, you did it to the nra, done it to the pro life groups, messed with the wrong girl, we are not going to let you get away with it. >> sandra: former ambassador nikki haley, appreciate you joining us. thank you very much. >> john: see you again soon. a politician greeting people outside of her home seeing a gun an inch from her head. we will tell you what happened to keep it from being the last

>> john: critics say one of the most powerful teachers' unions is trying to rewrite history claiming she was all for keeping schools open. and now could we overcome all the fear, i wish we could have. i don't think it's anybody's fault we did not understand what was going on in terms of school and what was going on in terms of covid. those comments right as a damning new report shows test scores for american kids hitting their lowest level in decades. byron york, she did not know what was going on in schools but plenty of people said you know what's going on in school with the remote learning, kids will get way behind, and now this national assessment on educational progress says the chickens came home to roost. math, down seven points on average. reading, down five points on average. lowest levels since 1990. and among minority students,
11:21 am
black students in math down 13 points. hispanic students down eight. in reading, black students down six. hispanic students down six points. this is an effect that bill bennett was telling us could go on for decades. >> first thing we should say is this report is really tragic. you saw on the graphic, the lowest since 1990. this is 30 years of progress just gone in the course of this pandemic. now, no one is to blame for the pandemic, but -- >> john: well -- >> ok, we can talk about the chinese. after the first few months it became clear that you could operate schools safely and randy winegarden and the biggest teachers' unions and the democratic politicians they support, were all in favor of keeping those schools shut and doing remote learning and then later some sort of hybrid
11:22 am
learning, and they were very critical when then president trump came out and wanted to open the schools. it became highly politicized, a lot of republicans were in favor of opening the schools, democrats were in favor of keeping them closed. those are just facts. that's what happened. and today that we see, now that we see the terrible cost, a lot of people saw coming, you can't just change what happened. >> john: according to randy in a tweet, it's all puppies and kittens. thankfully, after two years of disruption that killed more than a million americans, schools are working on helping kids recover and thrive. this is the year to accelerate learning by rebuilding relationships focusing on the basics. what the wall street journal editorial board wrote about all that today. america's teachers' unions d demanded the schools are shut even though they were open in europe. distorted money from congress.
11:23 am
schools received money to safely reopen and address learning losses but schools stayed closed and much of the money has not been spent. how many times did the teachers' unions move the goal posts when it came to the idea of reopening schools? >> initially, some teachers were older, more vulnerable to this, and then the idea more students would get this. there were plenty of people at the time who were saying this is a really bad idea, and that there will eventually be a price to be paid. now, one thing you are hearing from democrats and she will say this is that they would say the american rescue plan, the huge spending covid relief bill passed by congress in the first few months of joe biden's pregnancy, retrofitting schools, improving ventilation in schools and only now after the massive expenditure are they safe to return. again, that's not what happened.
11:24 am
>> john: the wall street journal made the point, schools were closed and much of the money has not been spent. we have to go, finish out. this was the end of the editorial, after the first months of covid uncertainty the school shutdowns had nothing to do with safety. you flunked the pandemic, randy, and set america's children back a year. bill bennett says probably for a decade, an entire generation, maybe. >> we should hope it is only a year. children at a critical stage of learning to read and improving their reading skills, if that doesn't happen they are set back for a long, long time. >> byron, great to see you. sandra. >> facebook's communications director in regards to policy, andy stone. worked for a democratic super pshg ac, senator barbara boxer, and press connect for the

before a supporter hits his arm and the security tackles the brazilian national living in argentina. >> we were greeting christina when it happened. at first i didn't know what was going on but i heard the noise when he triggered the gun, not understanding it was a gun until the security jumped on him. >> i was amazed. we went to the corner because they were holding him in detention, and i was amazed at how calm his face was. he was cross-legged and playing with his hands. >> the gun had five rounds but none in the chamber. check this out, security lets kirchner continue walking in the crowd of supporters, apparently without fear of another shooter. she is controversial but popular. she was argentina's first lady from 2003 to 2007, and succeeded her husband as president until

2015, and many are prompting protests crashing with police and her supporters on the left. why? corruption. she faces 12 years in prison and a ban on holding office for using state funds to benefit friends, and last year she beat charges that she helped cover up the bombing of a jewish center to protect friends in iran. so, police are checking on why this gun misfired, reportedly got close to her for asking for an autograph from her book. john. >> john: if there wasn't a bullet in the chamber, because they did not rack the slide and thank god she did not do that. apparently pope francis called her shortly after that, god clearly on her side there. >> and guardian angel. >> john: yeah. thank you so much. >> bottom line is jobs are up, wages are up, people are back to work and we are seeing some signs that inflation, may be, may be beginning to ease.
11:51 am
>> sandra: president biden taking a victory lap on the latest jobs report out today. 315,000 added in august. we like to see jobs were added, in line with expectations, pretty good growth although slowed from the month before. but we are not out of the woods yet, especially when it comes to the job picture. 11.2 million job openings, more than twice the number of people looking for positions. extremely tight market. >> no doubt the labor market is moving in the right direction for policy makers. but when you drill down, there is still some weakness in the jobs report. talking about the participation rate, we love seeing more workers coming in to look for a job, because you are cutting the stimulus checks so. that proves when you remove stimulus and handouts, people look for work. now, one point i want to drill down on, the part-time workers. the number have gone up over the
11:52 am
past year. so you are looking at 20 million part-time workers, otherwise would want full-time work and that's higher than in 2021. also the u.s. is now employing the record number of temporary help services, that's a bit of a concern going forward. also want to note hispanic and the black unemployment rates actually spiked in the month as well. >> sandra: interesting, ok. larry summers, former from a democratic administration everyone likes to quote him, having worked under democratic presidents he's been very critical of the way this current democratic presidency has been handling the economy, he says after the numbers were out, overall this evidence suggests that we still have a long way to go to cool the labor market and that it is far too soon for a victory lab regarding the prospects for a soft landing for the u.s. economy. still a huge job the federal reserve has to do to tame inflation because we are still seeing sky high prices and we are not seeing demand destruction yet.
11:53 am
>> and larry summers in an interview, says a soft landing is probably more hope than experience. over the last 50, 60 years, almost impossible, especially when you have inflation above 6%, unemployment below 4%, and to him, even said we need to get to the jobless rate of 6% in order to bring down inflation. >> sandra: for years, for years, not just one quarter. >> how do you marry the fact we have been talking about layoffs this week, so snap is cutting 20% of workforce, silicon valley is in a hiring freeze, even the vision fund, they are cutting 20% of their staff. so when you have high-priced jobs, six figures there, being reduced, you know, that's not an indication that the economy is moving in the right direction. >> sandra: unfortunately it did not have to be the case, if inflation had not been ignored as long as it had been, the federal reserve would not have to inflict this economic pain on the american people to try to bring those prices down.
