magnet. we have a duty to defend democracy. we just lost 50 years because of the runaway mega supreme court. every candidate is running for office we are going to defend roe v wade and the reproductive freedom we all used to take for granted in america. that is the movement that will take away your political freedom. it just took away reproductive freedom. the president is sounding the alarm. mike: okay since roe v wade has been overturned and has become a state issue, should democrats running for office tell voters whether they support any restrictions on abortion? >> what democrats support broadly is restoring the status quo roe v wade but we are fort roe v wade for the other side is going to ban abortion in all 50 states, that is choice. i'll leave it to individual candidates to save their individual positions. i'm telling you right now if you care about your reproductive freedom predicate think politicians should not be making

the poll has independence favoring democrats 38 -- 35 in march republicans were up 12 points of independence. why are you losing momentum right now? >> i don't think we have it. certainly think some people needed to understand that a year ago was not going to be today. as you know i talked about getting past the labor day weekend when everyone starts to engage. right now we are almost seven points better than the generic battle ballot similar to yours ago. on election day in 2020 they were generic they held every republican incumbent for the first time since 1994 but we picked up 15 seats in an environment where it's predicted we're going to lose 15. the other thing you should look at it as my counterpart announced a huge media bite last week. he is spending millions of dollars defending democrat incumbents received joe biden one by double digits.

his first breath. our candidates know how to message that and they'll be just fine in the midterms. mike: a stock abortion. while sojourner polson more than half of voters are more likely to head to the polls because roe v wade was overturned. can you say definitively this will not cost republican seats? >> i think it's help to narrow the enthusiasm gap. if you look at the enthusiasm gap, every measure out the republicans still lead democrats and enthusiasm to vote in this next election. plus, the number one issue in every single pole. i will say it again, is the economy and rising cost of living. everything is more expensive because of failed democrat policies. and might, the one question every voter is going to have to ask when they go to vote in november, am i better off today than it was two years ago? it is a resounding no. eight out of ten americans believe this country is on the wrong track. that is why the going to vote for a change elect a new republican majority house.

mike: does a former president trump being in the news hurt your candidates because you are not hammering inflation, gasoline prices, the border crisis and of course crime in major american cities? >> look, the american intelligence agency in this administration have been after donald trump since day one. in fact the intelligence agency has been after him since he started running for office. and now the white house has prioritized going after anyone who disagrees with them. in fact the white house press secretary last week said anyone who disagrees with the democrats and the white house with the biden administration is an extremist. the rate on the four presidents home is not only unprecedented, it is outrageous. him by the way this double standard is why so many americans are pissed off about this. republicans, democrats, independents. while they go after donald trump and suggest she is done something, which they've been doing for years, i would said they lost her credibility six years ago with the russian collusion hoax. and while they are doing all

new jersey democratic governor phil murphy just met with the white house about how to keep more teachers on the job. i sat down with him this weekend to discuss. joining us now governor phil murphy of the great state of new jersey. governor, welcome back to fox news sunday. >> good to be on mike, thanks for having me. mike: you praise biden's executive action on student loan debt. what would you say to the millions of new jerseyans who paid their bills, made sacrifices, even made more affordable education choices were not getting any money back? >> yes, by the way i'm one of those guys i paid my student debts off into my mid or late 30s. i would say this, mike it's not an either or pretty think it's probably a combination of anda both. this program gives relief to over 1 million new jerseyans. the pell grant grantees get double the amount because finding some ways to means a test this is important. that's we do a lot of in new

jersey. on the margin we do the cost-benefit analysis this is really a smart and good movie. mike: what can be done in your view to address the big picture issue, the underlying issue, the soaring cost of higher education in this country? or example is it time for an institution like princeton to tap into its 37 billion-dollar plus endowment to help deserving students? >> yes, you've got a lot of programs out there. some of them are done by us but some are done by the institutions themselves. we have something called the community college opportunity grant. this ate last dollar program. and if you qualify tested by income, you go to community college free of charge prudent something called the garden state guarantee that contact that on to your getting a bachelors degree. i'm sure institutions themselves can take steps. you see a lot of needs of blind

admission programs, incre increasingly. but listen, we need to continue to make higher education more accessible and more affordable. the premise of your question is right on the money. it's gotten too out of control into out of reach. mike: let's talk covid advert you talked about a review of covid since april 2020 when you are asked about covid it last week use" we have just under 1000 people still in the hospital. it is clearly something we are living with. which is a good thing but we are also clearly not out of the woods. does that mean if they're still covid in new jersey there's no review? >> no, it does not mike. i do not have news to break today. but i think we are within a matter of weeks of coming up with a comprehensive program. i think i was asked that question in the context of long-term care. back in june of 20 a deep dive with an independent firm. but we are going to do the entire covid response including

long-term care. i want to make sure it's effective not just in teaching us what went right, what went wrong, but also it could be a tool for future governors, future administrations. i hope frankly it's a trigger for congress to take a similar step to look at the national response. but no, covid is sadly is still with us. it will continue to be with us. but we cannot wait to the last case to do that review and we won't. we'll be starting something s soon. visit us on school closers national test results show a real drop in learning, fourth-graders scores of falling by the biggest margin in three decades. in new jersey come in person learners learning was not restored till last september, but a year end a half into the covered pandemic. question, or schools closed for too long? >> listen, that's going to be one of those things folks debate forever and for always. we knew learning lost, we know it's real we know the mental health stress on everybody. kids in particular, educators,

families. i would say this, particularly early on. but frankly when the adults at others kept coming back, when we had so little knowledge about this pandemic and about this virus we had no other choice. sadly, we will be laser focused on closing those gaps which we know exist. i just become the chair of the national governors association. my chairmen initiatives focus on mental health of our students for this very reason. so it is real. we know it. it's up to now's us to close those gaps. mike: like many places new jersey is doing with the shortage of teachers. you are just down here in washington in your role as a national governors association meeting with the education secretary and the first lady. what concrete steps are you bringing to the table to fix the teaching shortage? >> it was a very good discussion. new jersey is a short i think the entire country is short.

some of things we have done i think flexibility, mike, has to the name of the game. for instance we have done something that allows retirees to come back in without upsetting their pension reality. it made it easier for substitute qualified substitute teachers to come in. we are trying to get that common ground of making certifications more streamlined and easier without giving up the quality, the high quality. we are blessed with number-one education system in america. that begins with educators. we do not want to mess that up and we had a great discussion with the first lady and others on apprenticeship programs were in a one us to do more of that in new jersey. we've got a grant program for diversity and extending diversity among our educators. i would love to see a broad-based apprenticeship program that existed in places like tennessee. so we are doing stuff but there's still more work to be done. mike: here we are at labor day weekend heading into campaign season parade the president has blacklisted what he calls the

maga philosophy saying it is like quote semi fascism. does that make you uncomfortable sir? >> listen i'm a former u.s. ambassador to germany. i have sadly seen the history of the 20th century up close and personal. listen, i think the president has had a heck of a run here brace on the other i told him that. and whether it's congress getting stuff passed that he has signed, his own leadership sadly, for the wrong reasons, of what the supreme court did with reproductive freedoms, there is no question about it. the democrats have momentum. and i would say where they are democrat or a republican in this case, as americans we have to call out extreme behavior. we have to call out behavior that undermines institutions that we need to trust not undermine like our justice department, fbi that needs to respect results that we see in elections. i think that's more of an american reality than one party

mike: will soothe the president ultimately decides about 2024. have you met with donors to talk about 2024? and what if your friend senator cory booker decides to jump in? i am from new jersey but how much is too jersey on the national stage? [laughter] >> nevermind perhaps semi from the other side of the aisle that can run from jersey. or he is a dear friend and a great leader. i have met with no donors about my personal ambitions in that respect. we do have a couple political vehicles that are one well-funded focus on frankly mostly getting the word out in terms of what we have done here. drawing a line. we inherited estate at many respects was broken. we got ourselves back upon our feet. a lot of the focus of our political operations if you will is to get that megaphone out there and say this is now accepted behavior in new jersey no matter who the governor is.

candidate quality assurance on the senate races. senator rick scott who is leading this senate republican campaign firing that back very publicly saying when you complain that we have bad candidates what you're really saying is you have contempt for the voters who chose them. much of washington chattering class disrespect secretly or not so secretly loathes republican voters have you ever seen this? >> i have seen the jabs i have never seen this open tribal warfare between two republican leaders. rick scott wrote a blistering piece the washington examiner while not naming mcconnell but everyone knew he was talking about essentially saying this was treasonous. it really is quite a spectacle. if i can circle back for one minute to the d.o.j. investigation of donald trump. to everybody in the pressing is going to be indicted, is going to go to jail. lock him up. i think he may well not be

indicted just on classified documents unless merrick garvin has something else showing over actions to harm national security. i think it's very difficult for him to bring charges on classified dockets give it leniency in the past or democrats. mike: back to mcconnell. is it helpful when republicans are bickering with each other, mark? >> i don't think a lot of americans in a concentrate on that. and 65 for going have a decisive victory. we are technic crime and joe biden's america, for your time but a crisis at the border of 200,000 illegals crossing every month. if we are talking about inflation. if we are talk about the reality going into a deeper recession and will be by november. if instead we are talking about taking aoc talking points about defunding law enforcement or pardoning criminals, that's going to get us off a message. we are talking about joe biden i think he did with that terrible speech that certainly was

advertising, there is no amount of money that you can spend to a century introduced candace to voters in the amount of time that they have between now and election day, who are politically inexperienced for that is an issue republicans are running into the cycle and they are competing against democrats who have a record who have run statewide in pennsylvania for instance the democrats outperform president joe biden in 2020. and so sometimes those records can work against democrats for sure. but at the same time, that is something democrats eat working in their favor this election cycle. mike: and marie there's a broader theme here republicans want to make it about president biden. democrats want to make about four president trump. is there any issue overlap here or the parties and their separate lanes? >> i think increasingly democrats want to make it about what president biden democrats in congress have gotten done for you heard sean patrick maloney said that earlier per the infrastructure deal, burn pits
