life to her duties. >> todd: alex hogan outside buckingham palace this morning. alex. >> queen elizabeth is dead and the crowds continue to mourning the life of a remarkable woman who lived and reigns for 70 years and the crowds continue to grow. she died surrounded by family members in one of her favorite places in the scottish countrysides. she loved to be out in nature surrounded by animals, she took the throne in 1952, at 25 years old. her coronation took place in 1953, this was after the death of her father king george vi. she is longest reigning british monarch, take a look at the list of people who have served, not nearly as long as she did, longest british monarchs include queen victoria and henry iii and edward iii. the eldest, her son, is now king

charles iii, her death elevating the rest of the family members making them a step closer to being next in line for the throne. in her 70 years as queen she served along 15 prime minister, meeting liz truss a few days ago in the image we have there, shaking hands with the new prime minister, who offered her condolences. for people who are here, they are mourning the life, the queen want a seamless transition of power and that is what we saw take place in the last year. prince charles took more and more roles and duties stepping in for the queen as her mobility deteriorated. she was able to live such a long, healthy life, remarkable the amount of historical milestones she lived through and

framed picture of the queen in somebody's sitting room. viscountess hinchin the public carrying photos of her in their wallet, it is very personal and i feel many people today have woken up to is really coming to terms of it, the shock and sadness and the heartbreak. this is a country that has absolutely adored this queen. her approval rating was 90%, i mean absolutely extraordinary woman and this will take some time for everybody to mourn, to grieve and let it process. >> todd: you just analyzed this through the lens of the great people of great britain. look at this through the american lens now, what should americans take away from the life and legacy of the queen?

>> i have been contacted by so many of my friends in america who are like the british people, heartbroken, deeply upset because there is an element man in america felt that she was also their queen, as well. yes, of course, the reason that america did leave the british empire was because of the monarchy, they didn't want to be ruled, there is an element of connection, compared to the british empire, it is that feeling of connection and that feeling of having a family, having a community and i think in particular after the pandemic, that is what we've been searching for, this feeling of connection to family. what is the most important to us and i think the queen represented that importance of community and family.

monarchy to be different under king charles? >> it could never be the same as it was under queen elizabeth, it was an age encompassing enormous change, social change, there was one constant factor. whenever the queen was supposed to turn up in a rolls royce, she turned up on the moment in a time of flux and change and terrible change in some cases, she was the one reliable thing in our lives and in our perspective. >> carley: one thing about the queen, she never openly gave her political opinions as head of church and state. she was sort of above the partisanship. charles as prince was much different. he did talk about how he felt about climate change and immigration approximately and criticized sending immigrants to rawanda. as king, will that change? >> heville to be more

monarch has to subdue any personal feelings, any personal dislike or liking and of course that particular monarch had a wealth of experience having gone through the reigns of other prime ministers, many in number before, which the new prime minister always, if they were sensible, made use of the queen's experience, judgment and know how, she was really good at being the queen. >> carley: speaking of relationships, there is a huge rift in the family between h harry, meghan and the rest of the royals, how do you think that will play out going forward? >> very few younger royals have control over their behavior seemingly, other than prince william, who is a shining example, and kate. it is going to know it, there has to be a pause, a respectful pause. let's hope it lasts a nice long

earl of dun, bu the virtue of being the son of duke and duchess of sussex. the grandchildren of the monarch from son of a monarch have the right to be hrh's, have right to be prince and princess if the monarch decides to offer that and if in this case harry and meghan decide to accept it. it will be interesting to see what they do. princess ann did not take it for her children, prince edward didn't take hrh's for his children even though they were grandchildren of monarchs, it will be interesting to see if harry and meghan push for it. the prince of wales, didn't block anything, this was just constitution the way it has been for many, many, many years.

from friends and colleagues, it was absolute honor to serve our country and with the queen, 17 and a half years, she was my boss for the whole time that i was serving. and as you said in the intro, i was lucky enough to fly the royal family around and that was extreme honor for me. so with the news of her passing yesterday, it is incredibly saddening to myself and the whole armed forces community. >> carley: one thing that ties the british military and the queen together, they both have this deep sense of service and putting something larger than themselves above their own desires. can you speak to that? >> yeah, i mean, when you're singing the national anthem,

where it is god save the queen, you're fighting in the armed forces for your country, but you are fighting for your queen and you really get a sense of that when you are in operations, it really is an honor and the royal family do take it seriously the relationship between themselves, the country and the way they treat the military. >> todd: in general, what is it like to fly the royal family? >> it's -- well, i mean, it is a fantastic experience. i was lucky enough to do multiple royal tours, where you would take the royal family members around to different engagements around the world, it was a real honor and privilege

growing up in north carolina, never in my wildest dreams did i ever imagine that i would have an opportunity to visit buckingham palace as a guest and be in the company of queen elizabeth ii. just truly a dream come true. something that did i ever imagine would happen. i think i respected her as so many others did because she really represented what i feel is a by gone era. a time and a generation where people put duty and tradition in so many ways above themselves. she certainly represented that. she had such an admiral devotion to her country and so i can tell you for all of us in the trump family, that is something that was impressed upon us before we even went. and then there -- to be there in her presence and in the company of the royal family was magical, and the dinner that she shared with the entire royal family

and, obviously, the extensions thereof. there were many people at the dinner. it was incredible. and something that i will never forget. and at the time i was actually seven months pregnant with my daughter carolina and i remember very distinctly thinking i will one day be able to tell my daughter that she kind of through me had this incredible experience of being at backing ham palace, meeting the royal family and something i will never ever forget. >> carley: that is so special. i love that. >> todd: as for your father-in-law, much has been made of his meetings with the queen. during the jubilee coverage we heard a lot of stories that while donald trump doesn't fawn over too many people in his life he was particularly enthralled with the queen. what can you tell us about that? >> well, i would say that that's accurate. i would say it's very true. my father-in-law during the time as president but also his time as a businessman and the icon that he obviously is, has met many world leaders. has met famous people, you know, from all over the world.

this was a particular highway, i think not just of his presidency but something in his life, too. that he cherished and will cherish forever. he has such great respect for people like queen elizabeth who, again, love her country so much and did everything she could throughout her life to dedicate herself to her country. i think he respected that. but for him, just like i think the rest of us, you know, this was the person who was the monarch of the united kingdom his entire life. so, it was so special to have a person like that welcome him and welcome our entire family to their home and their country and the way that they did and that she did and i can tell you that he will cherish that forever. that was certainly a big highlight of his presidency for him. i can tell you without a doubt. >> carley: absolutely.
