now, taiwanese are a resilient people. they're very capable, very bright people. given the right sorts of weapons, they can defend themselves quite well, but not against a 1.4 million person country. >> neil: you're right. we have to watch it closely. colonel, thank you very much, and for your service to the country. we'll go to "the five" right now. >> hello, everyone. it's 5:00 in new york city. this is "the five." well, it's cleanup on aisle biden, the commander in chief giving his first sit-down interview in seven months. oh, to be a fly on the wall at the white house. the president giving some revealing answers on the most important issues to voters that made staffers reach for their smelling salts. for example, biden downplayed sky-high inflation.
2:01 pm
>> as you know, last tuesday, the annual inflation rate came in as 8.3%. the stock market skydived. people are shocked by their grocery bills. >> inflation is up hardly at all. >> you're not arguing 8.3 is not good news? >> no. but it was 8.2 before. you're making sound like, oh, my god, all of a sudden it went to 8.3%. >> it's the highest inflation in over 40 years. >> i got that. >> biden has used the pandemic as the legal reasoning behind why request he could cost up to $20,000 worth of student loan debt, but seems like he completely undercut his own argument. >> mr. president, first detroit auto show in three years. >> yeah. >> is the pandemic over? >> the pandemic is over.

2:03 pm
they didn't know he was go there. when he basically says, covid is over, therefore what i did with student debt is basically illegal, and since covid is over you can tell because people are not wearing masks. so, you know, there's your evidence that covid is over. but i think the real problem here is he's not feeling the pain. last month, a little bit from the month before, it's the highest covid -- excuse me -- inflation we've had in 40 years. even pelley was shocked by his response to that. i think americans understand now, having seen that, he's not someone feeling the pain. he doesn't think it's a big deal. >> jessica, i noticed that the chief of staff is usually a prolific tweeter. he was silent last night. >> taking a break. >> i'm not sure if he thought last night went too well. >> i would guess not, definitely out with the bragging rights, or
