n ordered to evacuate as hurricane rita now is bearing down on the state'shr gulf coast in just a moment.t. florida governor rhonda santos will join us first herest with the very latest from thisrs category three storm weather. in meteorologist ian oliver is with us in thisoliver. looks like it's going to be a direct hit right over. looks like somewhereoks li nortr fort myers, right towards tampa. >> yeah, anywhere from naples. igto the southern part of tampa bay, the mouth of tampa bay: stl still a reasonable scenaril o ao here. this is a monster of a storm, still a category three , as your mentioned,ee max, winds at 120we miles per hour. we actually had this inner eye wall that's been degrading, but there's an outer one that's forming. what that does is it spreads out the wind field overh a much larger area. we've seen these impacts starttw already. tornado warnings throughouarnint the afternoon and evening across much of south florida. we've got some active onesh flom right now for collierw. and hendry counties.t of a lot of spin and these powerful out of the outer bands of ian look, this that'sse.
11:02 pm
the intense core. it's about 90 miles off toe weso the west of key west. we recorded there a wind gusts up to seventy one miles per hour. so that's greatly removed fromie that intense inner core. and we'rnt ae already up to cloe to hurricane force winds.to this is a powerfulrm storm andta one that's getting larger. and this is the latestte forecat track as per the national c hurricane center, any wobbleen left or right? o it's not if with these impacts, it's who gets the worst ofstor t for storm surge. itit'll be who's ever and on the southern and eastern side of that inner core. the eye ase wall as it movesry r ashore. we're talking about a category four m at storm at landfall atrrow a some point tomorrow afternoon or evening. look at the peak surgeft ort att possible again, right at thahetn landfall point occurring at high tidrom the from the southee part of the ba oy down to naple. some of these areas could see up to 12 feet of surge. >> and just to put that into perspective, a lot of areas like this on the coastline in florida, fort myer floris beach, beautiful beach down intoit barrier island, a max elevation there of three feet. so if this hits at a high tidedu
11:03 pm
cycle, you're talking aboutr ont nine feet of water on top ofop normally dry ground across that entire barrier island.le e the whole area there irrn fortos myers beach, that's one threat ,the storm surge. we've also got the hurricane conditions that will spread far inland. at dad then look at look this, ths darkrk red , including perhapsea the tampa bay area. >> that' s 15 to as much as 20 aroun inches of rain. if you've been around the tampa- bay area that amount of water will lead to catastrophic flooding. those are all the threats that we're watchingg. thwatching as we moveple of through the next couple of days. days. >> back to you in al ean: t our thank you for that. hatreport. we're going to more also with joe bastardi later on in the show. joining us now joining with moreh mo on this looming storm , floridae governor rhonda santurce, are bu governor , i know you're up.sy i know you're busy.i hear i heard your press conferencd e earlier two 1/2 million people have been ordered to evacuate y meteorologist i have spoken to says this is the real deal and the flooding could be as high as 12 feet. storm surges and people could die. >> and tell us what the plann is
11:04 pm
is . governo >> well, you'rr e right, desant . i mean, this is a category three . it will certainly be a category four at some point. y it may reach landfall as a thtegory four, which is going to pack a punch in and ofg to g itself. that's going to generate a huger amountate huge of storm surge. and then what's expected to happen is the storm is going too come onshore and then it's going to kind of slof w toit a crawl. yes, it will weaken, but itg. will just plod along. what that's going to do, that's going to dump massive amounts of rain. one ofhe thing the things that'n challenging with this is we started a couple of days agoag with it, with a land arrivallanr projected in north florida in the panhandle. and that's then that was moved f to north of tampa and tampa. t now, the most recent guidancenti from the national hurricane centerda is arrival at charlotte county and sarasota county border. basically, there's going to be another update at 11:00. we'll see if that trend to thata the east continues. but, sean, you know, that part of the state very well. hits one the further south it hits on st
11:05 pm
the peninsula, that starts to bring in more major impacts for places like fortr im myers and naples and those communities. anotheher thing i think it's going to be challenging is itg o is going to hit and it's basically going to go across the state and likely exit on the atlantic coast sometime someplace in central or i northeastern florida. and that's going tosicall be basically a tropical storm going across the entire state of florida. so you're going to talk abou ttk power outage s. ain an you're going to talk about a lot of rain and flooding. so thiuss is not just going to be limited to wherever the storm makes landfall. governor , let me ask you this.y and i think you're sympathetic like i am. nobodymp wants tot i th be inconvenienced like this.inu i think you agree with me.agree wily don'tpeople generally don'o be told what to do. the worst thing, though, thathi could happen is if you try toano ride this thing out and you're not able to, the last thing we want at the end of the day is even one person dying from the storm. that's preventable.that is prpeople leave now.p
11:06 pm
you've set ushp shelters all ste around the state of florida,in t especially in the areas that are in that cone that we havha e up on the other side.tee where n the screen tell people where they can go , what you haveilabe availabl,e. >> and one of the plans in the aftermath of this. well, sean, we have a saying down here in florida that you hide from the wind, but you runf from the water. water. and i think in situations like and i think in situations like this, even a category fourture storm , we have great building codes. a lot of our structures ind that florid aa can withstand that. most people's homes, maybe notme a mobile home, but mos ht people's homes can do. the problem with this storm is it is going to a generate a massive amount of waters real and surge. and there's really no way that you can counteract that.barrier is you're someone in the barrier island and even if you're in a nice, sturdy home, you know, if you get 10 feet ofo storm surgu e, that's going to potentially put your life in jeopardy. and so what we've said in jeopau know, you don't get a mulligan on this. you can always go back, you know, when the storm passes
11:07 pm
and get back in your home. we obviouslyia wanllt you to don that. but this is really, really significant. and , yes, thered yes, then al s all these counties. st also o have a deal with the state of floridaat and expedia. people go to expedia, .com slash florida, and there's hotels that are offering deals in other parts of the state of florida. one thing, though, that we'veri. been pointing out, sean, when you'rething wewhen you called tt doesn't mean you need to leave the entire state. it s doesn't mean you need to oi go hundreds of miles in a situation like this where we're concernelere conboutd abos ,anywhere that's higher ground in a sturdy structure, youg to know, you're going to be able to ride it out in that wherewhui we're concerned about these low lying areas, the places that are very prone to storm surge and flooding. >> let's talk about yo u hadh th a conversation with thehave b president today. prrlier in the day, there haeed been talk that the presidentes ouoke with mayors, but not you. but apparently the president reached out to you tonight. can you tell us about that conversation? and in the aftermath of the storm, what support for floridians can expect fromgovern the federal government?
11:08 pm
well, sean, you know, what i said today is , you know,pe my phone lines open when a people's lives and their property are at risk like thistt . we all need toogr work together regardless of party lines. the biden administrationy liness approved our request for a prenl landfall declaration and did that very quickly. so so we're thankful for that. obviously, as this the impactskw are known.n, there's there's going to be more goi requests, particularly for individual assistance for floridians that may have beestas displaced. you know, and it's my sensen th that the administration wants toknow,s to h help. really i think they realize tha st this is a really significant storm and there'w d thers a lotf people that we'r we working with , the locals. we work very well with them. of course, at the state level. but we really need everyone working together to make sure people have their needs tended : to a governor. >> let's g tal letk about what expectin in the aftermath of th power outages. obviously, probably a shortage of food, water supplies, some people's homes likely will be damaged, probablbly not
11:09 pm
something that they can repair. what is one ofat the steps in place for the aftermath as this storm goes north into otherthers states ? >> maybe, hopefully out tota the atlantic, eventually? wa well, obviously, as you said, john , wnte want people tt be safe when it hits . and so we're that's our numberre one focus. now, once it hits , if there are people that are in need of s rescue, you know, we've gosivet massive amountams of assets. i've got national guard, i've got urban search and rescue teams. sets f wero have assets from other hav states . we have florida fishflorida fisr and wildlife that have water c operations. i have the coast guard helpingot ou gt. o do so so those operations, as soon as it's safe to do, they will go if needed. help pe they will go to try to help people. once you have that situationf cr taken care of, of course, yous want to resume services. and so getting the power back on, making sure fuel is in the gas stations and making sure people have communications. and so wtions and soe have now e of our utility companies, there's over thirty thousand
11:10 pm
personnel stationed ready toione go in to get the power back on in these communities.e we've gogot folks on the telecommunications front that have folks ready to go inte to repailecommdy to gor any of the infrastructure that may be damaged. and the state of florida alone, you we havwe havee contracts tog fuel in if we need that. and so so those i gettingrmal, everybody kind oyofu' back to normal. you're right on some people'sst. homes may end up being totally destroyed. but fortunately, most people'sbk homes will not be they just need to get back in there and have normal servicespre-st restored. at so allght no ow.f that is pre sd right now. and as soon as it's safe to go in, they're going tohr clear the roads and they're going to get those linemen in there li toe to get the power be >> allrn right, governor , looko like every agency in florida at your disposal for full mobilization for this storm . yt i know your fellow countrymen from otherrymetates ar states ag ready to help as well. nee for those people that ard.e goid to be in need. our thoughts and prayers are with the great people of florida and people that are going tot be impacted by thisy
