the wo woods just yet. ten storm-related deaths after facing an overnight hammering across the peninsula. residents describing what it was like to ride out one of the worst storms to ever hit the u.s. >> i feared for my life. i went across the street, i got sticks and it didn't last enough for the big bad wolf that puffed away. >> i was just scared for my children. >> trace: rescue and recovery efforts underway in numerous cities that have seen historic flooding, fallen trees, downed power lines, and large gaps where a bridge once connected the mainland to the barrier islands. we've got team coverage for you tonight, kevin corke with a look at how this biden administration is responding to the storm. will nunley still on the ground

and we begin with steve harrigan live in florida just 9 miles away from where ian came a short period >> good evening, you heard from people who rode out the storm the fear as the storm was coming through and then later we are seeing people talking today they seem stunned by the level of devastation and the destruction. they see all around in southwest florida, i'm standing in front of a house destroyed in a trailer park unit all around me left and right street after street where there's complete destruction. if your house is still standing, you're likely taking a few of your neighbors and as aides pouring into florida from across the country. there is a number of pockets where the aide hasn't reached and people here are asking for the basics, asking for water, food, shelter. in many cases, at this point they are getting it from friends. the destruction came from 115

mile-per-hour winds and the destruction was so severe and catastrophic that in some parts of southwest florida, they are considering whether or not to rebuild. not just houses but infrastructure that's been destroyed as well. if the governor called this a 500 year flood and in some places more than 2 feet of rain falling and the rescues continue into the darkness. they began at 1:00 a.m. and as soon as temperatures -- as whether speed dipped below 40 miles per hour, that's when the first responders and the rescuers in the high water vehicles, the helicopters went out to try to save people who were trapped and isolated by air, by sea, by land as well. it's a complicated series of missions in part because roads are washed out, communications down, electricity down for more than 3 million people. also simply the nature of the population about one-third over 860. 40 nursing homes as well had to be evacuated and the storm is

not through yet with the u.s. ready to make its third landfall likely friday midday as a category one hurricane on the coast of south carolina. >> trace: we will talk more about that, steve lived for us. the path of destruction is apparent especially in the city of fort myers where it first made landfall. you can see boats slam together and doxed destroyed, debris covering the ground appeared in trees leaning, fallen, it's a treacherous scene considering the danger after the storm and rivaling the danger during the storm. will nunley has been on the ground from the start to end the latest in cape coral. good evening. >> for years, the neighbors have been saying they've been asking themselves what if, what a far corner of the world is hit by a big one and now their worst fears face-to-face with the

powerful destruction left behind by the incredible storm. take a look at the home behind me. i spoke to the man who lived in the home and he was able to evacuate and came home, just stood for a moment staring at the pile of rubble where he lived for years and the inkling about three hours before the storm hit to get out of harm's way because he could not have survived and fortunately some of his neighbors have. bridges have been taken away, we've had the home of helicopters over our heads and we understand of this our 700 rescues have been attributed to the storm so far as the operation continues around the clock. it's difficult to navigate around fort myers taking us about two hours before this point normally taking about 20 or 30 minutes. the traffic lights are simply not working. you can get fuel, the stores aren't open and there's a sense

of desperation tonight for neighbors getting the basic necessities. get tuning first like a my resources continue to be brought in to the area to assist. >> those resources are much needed will nunley back to you as the news breaks as predicted. ian once again making its way into the atlantic. we are neurologist say the storm yesterday was very close to being a category five and should not remain a category one until it makes landfall again. ffox weather meteorologist kendl smith with more on exactly where it might be. >> you're right, we are close in the category five but regardless, category four storm at the time of landfall yesterday afternoon shortly after 3:00 p.m. and further inland. they took the brunt of the storm last night and actually downgraded to a tropical storm and has now since been re-upgraded and strengthened to

a category one hurricane at this hour. we have sustained winds 85 miles per hour and we have noticed a steady uptake as we have watched the system re-gain strength over atlanta bolstering waters. 10 miles per hour, pressure holding steady at 984 millibars. what's expected to happen is that it will and continue to strengthen. will be dealing with tropical storm conditions but notice all the power outages that we still have ongoing at this time in the state of florida, 2.6 million customers without power earlier in the day. right now outages 2.2 million and the hardest hit counties, that stretches further to the north hard hit well. a long night ahead once again for many floridians without power and we are still dealing with tropical storm conditions like northeast florida and southern georgia.

notice the outer rain band stretching into nevada. the center of ian as of 11:00 p.m., just off the coast. we are expecting to deal with those hurricane force conditions by tomorrow morning. in terms of our expected track, this is what we are watching. we will continue to see the strengthening taking place by friday morning and potentially dealing with 85 mile-per-hour winds and by the time landfall takes place around midday, looking at landfall potentially new and tomorrow we will also have to contend with the fact that it will be high tide meaning that we could potentially be dealing with storm surges right along the line of south carolina about 4-. it will be devastating especially for the coastal communities and watch as the system attracts further inland and affecting portions of south carolina, north carolina, and locations in virginia, kentucky, west virginia.

this is a system will be dealing with well into the weekend and for that reason we have numerous watches and warnings and effects at this time. hurricane warnings start all the way down through charleston and notice once they reached savannah, that's where we transition over to tropical storm warnings. as a system works further inland, will be dealing with very heavy rain and wind spread rain that's especially in the appellations dealing with tropical storm force winds. right now, the latest thinking is that landfall most likely to occur midday somewhere just to the northeast of charleston and that's the zone that we are eyeing. >> trace: they see in the carolinas, when the storm is coming, high tide and low country is a very bad recipe. it kendall smith, back to you as warranted. in the meantime, heading up the east coast, the states are preparing the republican member and candidate for u.s. congress

russell fry. authority executive director finch and thank you both. i want to talk to you first, russell, because i know you've been in contact with emergency management people in your area. wondering what the plan is pretty hurricane. we just mentioned you get into some of the low country and talking about high tide to come but there is lot of water that's bad news. what's the plan going in? >> i think the plan -- the boy scout motto is being prepared. they really put assets into place, they put personnel and equipment along the coast. taking care the power outages and dealing with the storm surge. i visited a fire department tonight and they've got all the aquatic rescue operations ready to go. it's going to be really weird l. direct impact across the coast when you've got 7-foot seas and

storm surges coming in. it'll be a tremendous impact to people along the coast but beyond that it'll be a heavy rain event and power outages flash flooding, long-term flooding as well. >> trace: this tends to be a much more dangerous water event for south carolina. to you first, how does the port system work in georgia? does a mean ships aren't allowed in but you can still bring trucks and trains? what are we looking at? >> that's right, wednesday evening you call a forecast coming over the savanna. we cleared out with protocols so they could get safely out to sea. however we kept our truck gates open working rail and rail and truck's tonight. limited activity. we are speaking to you about 19, 20 mile-per-hour winds and 40 mile-per-hour gusts. looking for the delayed opening

and we will see how the day g goes. tthe day should clear as we get further into friday. savannah is out of the storm and in a kind of uncertainty and we should receive tropical force winds. i think we will be in good shape. >> trace: keep our fingers crossed and i want to put up this tweet from south carolina governor henry mcmaster and get your take on this. he says that this is a dangerous storm that will bring high winds and a lot of water. but the most dangerous thing about it will be human error. be smart, make good decisions, check on your loved ones, stay safe. the governor is right and you look back down to florida and there is a lot of people in fort myers in some areas around there that had wished they took off and heeded the warnings and got out. >> i think you're exactly right. we've seen hurricane in florida, hurricane matthew people driving around barricades, they go

sightseeing, that's where a large of the fatalities occur when people get restless inside the house. heed the advice of officials, make sure you're prepared and finished getting the preparations ready so that we can write out the storm. i think the governor's right, that's exactly right. we see it in every state and every time there's a storm, they get restless and want to do something, they don't. making sure your writing out the storm and keeping in touch with their family members, abso absolutely. >> trace: very good advice and you talk about the fact that young georgia might be breathing a sigh of relief, but i want to put this out. this is from the accuweather senior meteorologist. he said the following, to make matters potentially worse, there's a chance that he finds the mid-atlantic and strengthens again for the second new storm forming along the mid-atlantic coast continuing onshore winds and drenching rains with

flooding and beach erosion problems for additional days. in the port system, they could be dealing with uncertainty for at least 48 hours and maybe several days. >> sure. we think getting back sometimes on saturday morning, saturday afternoon, we seen it before these things are tough to predict and we can control them. it can be frustrating at times. >> trace: i went to quickly ask you, does the georgia porch coordinate with other ports and is there a risk by leaning back on letting ships incoming you're going to have supply issues in that area? >> i think we coordinate with all the agencies, not so much with other ports talking to them all the time. look, there'll be a disruption on the east coast that has been the supply chain as we know, that's why we are so focused on

keeping the gates open and delivering the cargo to our customers. we want to get the ships back in here as soon as possible. >> trace: about 30 seconds left, russell. what do you tell your people when the storms coming? >> just write it out and finish making your preparations early morning and listen to the advice of the officials. i think we've done this before. if south carolina has been a stranger to storms. continue to be smart, proactive, prepared. power outages will happen then there's going to be tremendous storm surges, flash flooding, and the worst obviously hit florida but south carolina will get the impacts as well. don't take it lightly. >> you're correct and the people of south carolina are seasoned veterans when it comes to st storms. gentlemen, thank you both. president biden visited fema headquarters in washington, d.c., and briefed on hurricane ian. at the president also reassured

florida residents that the federal government has their backs. he almost avoided talking about his contentious relationship with the governor of the state, but in the end he could not resist. white house correspondent kevin corke live with that. and good evening. >> quick action by the white house undeniable president biden approving a disaster declaration for the great state of florida. he ordered federal aid to help recovery efforts in areas affected by hurricane ian. for the folks at home who may not know this, a major disaster declaration provides a wide range of federal assistance. home repairs, loans, full reimbursement for debris removal, and emergency protective measures among other things. now, there is early reports of substantial loss of life from hurricane issue as you reported and that in mind, the president plans -- the federal government would do everything it could to get florida residents what they need after the storm.

but while some are focused on the loss of life and the continuing danger of the storm itself, others were content to turn the storm coverage political. if asking the president today about his frosty relationship with the republican governor ron desantis. >> it's totally irrelevant but all answer okay? in fact, very fine, he complimented me and thanked me for the immediate response we had and told me how much he appreciated it. he's extremely happy with what's going on. it's not dealing with what our disagreements were. >> speaking of politicizing the coverage despite the death and destruction, "the new york times" focused its attention on comments made by ron desantis nine years ago. about what he described as a sandy relief package. a total whiplash for mr. ron desantis reflects a different job in a different moment. the house republican now

of 100 nursing home. first responders at the facility was prepared but the water came into fast. none of the residents suffered injuries in the rescue operation and finally, this video of a man rescuing a cat has gone viral. at 29-year-old mark ross saw a kitty perched on an air conditioner trying to avoid the rising floodwaters he decided to wade into the knee-deep water to reach the orange and white cat. the plan with is to keep the kitty if he cannot find the owners. the city of orlando now dealing with the aftermath of hurricane ian and officials saying lighting was historic. more than 14 inches in most areas, the message for residents stay home. correspondent nate foy's and downtown atlanta with how the recovery effort is shaping up. good evening.

>> good evening, no wonder why a governor ron desantis calls this a 500 year flooding event in central florida. we are at the entrance to interstate four and you can see we are standing in shin deep water and if we walk further out it's going to go up to my knees. you can see the water at this car that was left behind. more than halfway up the tires, this woman came in into the car about 7:00 p.m. trying to get onto the interstate for which by the way, to the west of tampa, to the east is daytona beach. he similar to the path that hurricane ian took as it dumped a bunch of rain on orlando and you mention 14 inches. not sure if you can see the lighting we have here but there's a link on the far side of the car. spilled over the lake water, covering all the roads here. this woman doing exactly what orange county officials are asking people not to do. if i ask my photographer and

nick to pan to my left, down this way a lot of small businesses and popular bars. you'll see another car left behind on the far side of the floodwaters here. the hospital and also flooded out hospital. a lot of work for the rescue crews and take a look at the video. multiple rescue attempts from the police environment or in orange county and you can see a woman being rescued. spilled over flooding out the nearby streets, that area. just a few moments ago, the nursing home out of orlando had to be evacuated this morning with firefighters in orange county. 70 mile-per-hour winds and the winds and issue as of this afternoon with 49 trees still down. roadways in orlando, but the flooding's the big concern and that's what we heard from the

orlando mayor as well as governor ron desantis. it take a listen to this. >> this is unprecedented. we had so much rain over the course of the last month with the ground already saturated so you can't park like it normally would subside. the water has to go somewhere and fortunately the places it would naturally go have either flown into one of the rivers running north or south. >> it was such a major weather event that it's producing 500 year floods in places like seminole county and orange county. >> trace, some good news, flights out of orlando international airport are set to resume noon tomorrow assuming no issues are discovered between now and then. debris pickup will also start tomorrow. one thing officials here are asking residents to do is

conserve water because waste water treatment system overcapacity right now. at this point, the communities inching back to normal and of course you can see the entrance to eye for still flooded out. it still definitely not back to normal, but tomorrow will be a beginning of the process. >> trace: they are asking people to stay at the i-4 quarters. where's the traffic behind your? >> there some traffic behind us and we have seen -- we've been here since 2:00 p.m. some emergency officials came out and they put two cones but they didn't do that to my left. we have a cars come out and do a u-turn and do what this woman try to do. multiple cars made it and this one did not. >> trace: some do and some don't. thank you, checking in with locals as florida mckinsey's long recovery, the extent of the damage is next. ♪ ♪

♪ ♪ >> trace: cities all around florida dealing with toppled trees and down power lines and at the very least correspondent charles watson is in venice florida dealing with the cleanup effort. good evening. >> good evening, the level of destruction in venice is nothing short of devastating and this is just a taste of what we are seeing. this was a storage facility for rvs and boats, and reduced to a pile of broken wind and twisted metal. you can see the collapse of the roof and the wall. we spoke to the owner earlier today who told us this facility was beaten up for hours on end by 100 plus mile-per-hour winds until it gave way. >> i watched it for five hours just lift and sat down and each time it did it just a little piece would come off and it kept going.

you sit there just move on, i can fix the building at this point. five hours later, it's on the ground. >> again, somewhere throughout the rollable you can make out the boats on the rvs but what's unfortunate is that some of the folks who own the vehicles particularly at the rvs were hoping to pull them out because they need places to have shelter because a lot of the folks had damage to their own homes. that's not possible with this level of debris and making matters worse for not only those folks and everybody in the venice area is that a lot of folks without power in the limited cell phone services. folks are struggling to stay connected with the outside wo world. letting them use our own phone so they can get in contact with family members and let them know that they are okay and they are alive. this is certainly going to be quite the cleanup process in the

been through. unbelievable. >> our hearts go out to the best of you and hunter, you know you and the people there are being asked to stay inside because the flooding is still in place. it's been almost 24 hours. more than 24 hours and the flooding is bad. it describe it for us. >> that's right, we are still seeing a number of flood events all around the county starting with the bayfront in the city. we are seeing similar flood levels and we are also seeing other areas across the county making roads impassable. high tides this morning, seeing again this evening and hopefully not quite as bad with the high tide right now. we are monitoring that to see what the damage will be in the next few hours. >> trace: it's interesting on the plai play this if i can. this is the mayor of naples and

i'll get your opinion on the other side. >> it's devastating. if we shut down our water and sewer plant for a wild to protect any type of intrusion. our water system and i really feel blessed because even though i saw today more devastation and i saw floods yesterday like i've never seen before. >> i played that michael because she says the very same thing. she's never seen anything like this before. from your vantage points, what would you tell the mayor? >> what what i tell her? welcome as far as i am, that's the first time we are without electric. i haven't seen any destruction like that other than my own business. i know she's doing the best she can to make everybody safe. >> yeah, it's amazing to me because the whole thing is that

people are wondering is your business and are you planning to rebuild because we hear stories about maybe people aren't going to rebuild and they move on. what's your plan? d rebuild the business, do you stay in there? what do you think? >> i can tell you that i understand people walking away because devastation is so bad. at this point, i'm hoping to go ahead and reopen it sometime. it's going to take a while. >> trace: we wish you the best of luck. i'm wondering about those who are still stranded. do you have updates and are there numbers because the numbers have been a little bit all over the place for most of the day. what are you hearing and seeing? >> first of all, we keep in perspective what others like michael and those in the southwest part of the state are dealing with. we've seen a couple of dozen of rescues for those who chose to stay home and we didn't realize the search was going to be so

bad. our fire rescue department as well have been out all day responding to calls and there's a couple dozen with numbers recently saying numbers increasing and may increase overnight as it's dark and people aren't familiar watching the water come in. >> i want to play this if i can. this is the sound from the st. john's fire chief and i'll get your reaction. we don't have it, let me read this. at this point from the flooding standpoint, i would consider it pretty close to matthew. we are seeing flooding this time in places different from what we have seen before and of course he's talking about the massive hurricane matthew that really kind of came through the same path. would you make that same analogy, hunter? >> yes, the fire team and i discuss this. what we are seeing is like matthew and mouth. of moving into a hybrid and we are seeing flooding in the rivers and flooding on the coast where they all did a little bit

of damage independently of the other. it's a kind of collection of both of those and while we haven't gotten exact numbers and yet as to how high the storm surge was, it was higher than what a lot of people were expecting. >> trace: i think it's important to n and ap news headline saying storm battered florida businesses face arduous rebuilding. we talked about this with you. if florida's leisure and hospitality center 1.3 million jobs, 9 9.6% increase. tourism really is the engine that drives florida and it's going to take a while. for those who decide to rebuild governments going to take a while to get things back in place. >> i have to agree with that, 100%. i've got a lot of customers that depend on the commercial fishermen were a leisure boater.

democracy and abortion rights are ones that pull in mandela barn's favor. this is a guy who wants a national abortion ban and someone who defended january 6 rioters and has opposed any sort of investigation into them. they are strikes against him as well as his record against social security and medicare which has not been aired. you go down the path, you will see things change when ron johnson's own statements will come out saying he wants to repeal social security and medicare and he's not a champion for working people health care and the issues that affect wisconsinites. >> trace: won the football team goes south, the head coach in the quarter back in the offense of corners are the one to blame. the country seems to be and a little bit of a right and then democrats control the presidents and they control both houses of congress. they get the blame in these types of situations. >> they've got all three levers of power so if you're concerned

about inflation and the price of gas, the energy policy in the country, immigration, did i mention inflation? these are all issues that do not bode well for democrats. they may try to think that they can unseat a very powerful and effective senator, but ron johnson has strong roots in wisconsin is a great businessman and there is a reason why he's been successful in the past in a very tough 50/50 state. >> we talked about in the arizona race, mark kelly losing some ground and blake masters. also losing a little bit of ground in this. here's the voters and what's most concerning them in arizona. border security topping the list and preservation of democracy and neck and neck inflation and abortion are right there. it seems like these are quintessential arizona. >> mark kelly has been an

ineffective senator and almost silent on most every other issue. absent on most things. so blake masters has a great opportunity on the right side of the issue and a great family. it i think republicans are poised to win back in arizona as well. do you think blake masters has got a chance? >> jason's right is that this is a tough year for democrats. traditionally a tough year for the party that's not -- and power. blake masters is a deeply flawed candidate and he hasn't even been fully vetted yet. i think you will see the race change a lot. mark kelly is an astronaut and a sterling record in arizona. especially going back to the abortion issue again. blake masters as an extremist and with the policy positions that turn off just women voters but also a lot of dads that don't want to see their daughters have to go to another

state to get basic health care when they a baby. >> trace: getting a lot of pushback in arizona and i wonder what you think of president biden. the hurricane in florida, a lot of people stranded and missing. going to a fund-raiser and he bashes maga republicans. your thoughts? >> ron desantis is running in the state of florida. >> this is actually going to an event and bashing republicans while this is a guy talking about. they are different from ads running on television. it's a different scenario. >> how is that different? it still politics. because of physical ad the president has to do to actually go to a fund-raiser and bash republicans. it's the timing, the optics that seem to be off. >> let's talk about the substance. this is important because you're talking about optics and i will say this. we can debate optics but what he's doing is he's calling

ron desantis a bipartisan effort to save families in florida putting politics aside and making sure that they get the fema funding that they need and they had a very pleasant call. ron desantis who calls himself brandon and if you're political opponent had to admit that biden was leading on these issues as did rick scott whose fema chief was extremely competent and wonderfully effective as they had the really important calls. >> trace: you make a very good point that there's cooperation as far as the fema aid. at your final thoughts in the presidents fund-raiser? >> i think physically walking away going to a fund-raiser and not having your hands on the lever so to speak and compared to ron desantis, can you imagine if ron desantis went to a fund-raiser? he is the president of the united states. he should be in the situation room, having his hands on the lever. that's the difference.
