path the danger is real to state the obvious. please obey all warnings. brian in florida desperate search and rescue efforts underway this morning. at least 10 confirmed dead. officials warn that number likely to climb. >> significant damage that i saw was on fort myers beach there have been more than 700 confirmed rescues and there is likely many more than that. >> brian: there you go. before and after photos showing the extent of the damage in fort myers. curfew being enforced there to prevent looting. >> more than 2 million people across florida still have no power. we have live team coverage this morning. meteorologist adam klotz is standing by with ian's latest track. but, first, fox weather correspondent robert wray is live in fort myers with a look at the damage. robert? >> yeah, it's tremendous. it's really everywhere you look. and especially when you start heading down to fort myers beach where all those rescues have occurred and where governor antioxidant just talked about

how the devastation is so intense. but i say -- i will say, guy, if you take a look at the before and after surge came in and made all those historic streets rushing rivers literally. and go to sanibel island and causeway the only way to get out to the sanibel island and destroyed by the gulf of mexico surge that came in ripping apart the actual concrete on the roadway just tremendous scenes that we are seeing unfortunately. and as you say, over 2 million people still out of power. there are curfews in place right now for the next couple days because they do not want people coming into the darkness with no power, no water running water. and stealing people's belongings. that happens in the aftermaths,

unfortunately. that's the bad part. but i will say this. we drove from downtown fort myers where i'm at right now down to fort myers beach yesterday. and on each side of the road, destruction, downed power lines, there is still water in some areas. unfortunately, roofs that were removed and blown away from the hurricane force winds and then you get to the base and the police activity because they are still doing active search and rescues down there. that we were not allowed in. there is no communications by the way. comms are down. cell phone service completely taken away. people have no way to get away of loved ones or insurance if they are trying to do that i can also tell you i spent the night in namsz last night. much of that area was out of power. and about 9:30 last night. some power was restored to. so areas in naples. there are high rises that have been engulfed with storm surge. vehicles destroyed. all over the place.

what we are seeing right now in the aftermath of hurricane ian is historic. it is epic. it is something that will change the landscape of this part of florida and actually so many parts of this peninsula. people are on guard even as the sun is coming up this morning. the awakening of what has just occurred will start to come to fruition in the next couple days as active search and rescues are still going on and 10 confirmed deaths. >>this is a scene like no other in the aftermath of a hurricane. unfortunately in the united states is the fourth largest hurricane to ever hit the state of florida and people in this beautiful part, paradise, really, are living through a nightmare right now. >> brian: hey, robert, how freely can you move? are the road for the most part passable and are you sensing people are coming back to see how bad it is? >> that's great question, brian.

so, yesterday, there were a lot of vehicles. a lot of traffic out there. and it was causing congestion, especially on the roads that were still submerged in water. this morning i will tell you this. there are starting to be perimeters with police and officials that i think that they are going to stop a lot of folks from starting to come in. because there was a lot of people that wanted to see what is happening here yesterday after the windows stopped blowing. and certainly residents are here trying to clean up their properties. the sounds of chainsaws when this light comes up will be deafening. and you see, brian, these boats. >> brian: wow, are i know. >> incredible vessels pushed. in you just don't even know what to say. every time i have been standing here for 24 hours in this pocket around these vessels and seeing all this destruction. but every time i look at it. it just sort of takes me away. so i think that as we go through the weekend, you are going to start to see more national guard and the sheriff's office take control of these roads. because, indeed, that's one of

the reasons why the curfew is in effect. you are getting people with the wrong intentions starting to come, in unfortunately. >> ainsley: robert, we saw so many people move down to florida and word was you couldn't even get contractors because they were all so busy with people trying to build houses. i'm thinking contractors so backed up. houses are not going to be able to be able to be rebuilt fast and look at the building. boats behind you, how do you even remove that you can't push it into the water because it do be damaged on the base and therefore it could fill with water and sink. do they -- how do you even begin to fix all of this and bring it back to the way it used to be? >> that is such a good point. i was discussing with people last night about this. indeed, the machinery, it's going to take to bring these vessels out, and by the way, it's not just the vessels. underneath the vessels is debris. i mean, there are just anything you can think of is lying in the base of this water and down

here. from people's belongings in their homes to large canisters that who knows where they are from. the smell of diesel right now. to your point as well. i just -- i'm going to bring up a personal note here. i have in-laws that live in naples in a high rise. that's where i was last night checking on them. in the base of that high rise the surge came over the man groves and went down in there. and flooded the entire bottom. all these vehicles, every person in this giant high rise that had a vehicle in the base, those vehicles are gone how do you replace those? you can't turn vehicles on. tow truck can't get. in the time it's going to take to remove all of this debris is phenomenal. and, by the way, i can't stress enough, while we are talking about, you know, structures and people's belongings, there are still active searches going on for people that have -- may have

stayed and been in danger on the coast line. it is just a very fluid situation. and i pray for anyone that was caught and those first responders working 24 hours a day. >> and think about the families with the cars that lost their cars. not only are we dealing with families who have lost loved ones also if you lost your car you will have to get on a list and take two years to get a new car. >> ainsley: all right, robert, thanks so much. >> pete: we will check back in with you later on this morning. go over to meteorologist adam klotz tracking the storm because this thing is not over. adam? >> adam: no, it is not over at all. the national hurricane center continues to put out updates where we are watching this storm get closer and closerrer to the carolina coast. exited florida as a tropical storm. it's been back out over the ocean. will be so for over a day. picking up a lot of water and energy. winds are at 85 miles per hour. it's lifting to the north-northeast at 9 miles per

hour. the hurricane watch is in place from savanna all the way up to myrtle beach. you don't have to be in that area to feel the impact. this is going to go far inland. we see tropical storm warnings running from georgia up around into north carolina. fairly deep into north carolina. for over 24 hours, winds have been battering the coast at 35, 40 miles per hour. that constant window pushes ocean water up along the coast line. it's been sitting there, building and building and building. when the storm ultimately arrives with even stronger winds, it's going to push that wall of water inland. that's when you start to see a storm surge. this is taking you to early in the afternoon around lunchtime, the first couple hours thereafter. that's when the strongest storms move. in that's when the storm surge is going to be at its worst. actually at noon there is high tide which doubles the chance for really high water, a wall of water rushing on shore at its highest 4 to 7 feet of storm surge. this is low lying country. that could do a whole lot of damage. our fox model kind of takes this

hour by hour. you will see that leading edge really disintegrating and bringing in a whole lot of rain throughout the morning. then all of that moisture and rain lifts into the mountains where flooding can be an even larger concern. it's going to be water. that's going to be the story with this. it's going to be the water coming in from the ocean and storm surge. it's going to be a whole lot of rain, widespread there. probably 6 inches of rain. flooding and what to do with all of the sea water and all of the rain, that is going to be what folks in south carolina, north carolina really paying attention to here for the next 12 hours or so. >> brian: right. of course, brian kemp is coming over later when it comes to georgia. all right. thanks, adam. meanwhile as adam just mentioned carolinas and georgia bracing for potentially catastrophic storm surge from ian. >> pete: expected to make landfall in south carolina later today. >> ainsley: doug luzader joins us live from charleston. doug, how is it looking there. i know it is expected to make

landfall as adam was telling us around lunchtime. >> that's right, you know. it kind of comes and goes. we have seen for the past few hours deep band of rain move through. probably see the rain moving behind me here, and the palm trees sways a little bit. again, we have seen it more intense and a bit more calm like we are seeing at the moment. buff the real concern here is that storm surge. not so of the winds. i mean, yeah, category 1 storm is nothing to sneeze at. but they are really concerned about the impact all this water can have. this is the low country here, this part of south carolina. and when you start talking about a 4 to 7-foot storm surge, you know, that goes awfully far inland. so, we have seen some sandbagging around here. we have not seen a mad rush to the exits. but, like parts of florida, i mean, people around here are kind of gristled veterans of storms. most people are going to try to weather this thing out. the concern continues to be the impact of the flooding. you know, one interesting image in the local newspaper here,

showing a line of cars not trying to get out of town but to trying to get into a parking structure because they want to get them above sea level. so they don't get caught in a flood. you know, this is a part of south carolina that floods during high tide. and if you combine high tide with an incoming hurricane, i mean, that really could spell disaster. everyone here is kind of bracing for what ian is going to bring with it when it comes ashore a little later today. back to you guys. >> brian: good news, doug, you can't rationalize not taking action after what we just saw in fort myers. you can't say well, it's not going to be bad. forget it, consider it's going to be bad and look out. you have no excuse. >> ainsley: you are right, doug, my sister-in-law lost her car just years ago driving through downtown charleston in a normal storm it. does flood down there. if you are in downtown charleston get out and move your cars to a higher ground. >> links i have lost a car in a hurricane before.

stabbed to death while in queens yesterday. this all happening in broad daylight. 61-year-old allison rousseau he willing was on lunch break when a knife wielding mad man knocked her down and stabbed her 20 times describing as barbaric and unprovoked attack. the suspect barricaded himself in nearby apartment where police were able to talk him down taking him into custody. mayor eric adams condemning the attack and praising the victim for her lock career as a first responders. >> she should not have been murdered in this fashion. this is a painful time for everyone. let's be clear on the terminology that is used and reported. she was on duty, doing her job, saving the people of the city of new york. that was her role and that's the role of the countless men and women who are moving through the city saving new yorkers. >> new york congresswoman elise stefanik calling out city leadership and soft on crime policies that may have b have

that's city of miami. at about 8:00 last night on fort myers beach panama city is my hometown. and this is -- this is by far the worst hurricane i have ever been a part of. probably the biggest event we have ever had in the history of the state of florida as the worst of catastrophic dollar losses. fantastic force 2 is -- they started -- they left miami at 2:00 a.m. the night of the storm, and typically running alpha bravo they ran full teams. and they are working hard. you will be proud. >> brian: there is no doubt about it. so are you assuming that every block there could be somebody. instead of a call towers are down. you are going to assume that everybody needs help and all these blocks need to be canvassed? >> so, as the teams are working up -- we drove the beach last night.

and city of fort myers lee county, they are clearing the road of debris so the crews can get out so that the teams are going from literally from structure to structure. and the good thing is that people, at least in those areas there, very similar to what we saw in mexico beach, the dwellings are unoccupied. you would see the occasional unit where there would be towels hanging out on the railing. those families are still there in most cases they are leaving at day break because there is no need to try to let them leave during the middle of the night where there is no power, no lights and just challenges on the -- the environment leaving in a safe way. >> brian: seeing all your video that you provided. thank you for doing that can you give me an idea if you are in fort myers and hopefully you survived. you say to yourself where do i go? where are you sending people in fort myers?

>> so, we have got like a reception area where we are all survivors can be brought to. and, like i said in the case, you know, we have heard amazing stories yesterday afternoon. you had the city of -- or lee county sheriff's office is one of the police offices providing mutual aid brought to the base camp. an individual that was in cardiac arrest and immediately task force 2 started administering defibrillator and next thing you know the guy is back up and walking and they got him triaged to one of the hospitals. amazing stories. but families are being reunited but, please, understand as communications are so challenged. it's just hard for loved ones to touch base with loved ones. >> brian: we will keep touching base with you and you can be our conduit. thanks jimmy to all your men and women doing extraordinary things.

2800 people die from a hurricane. when you are talking about modern history, we could be looking at a high death toll for florida. if we are looking at all-time his industry early 1900s, 2800 people dying. we didn't have the warning systems then. a different setup so the storm's power is a little bit different. however, what we are finding out is that right now there are about 10 deaths from hurricane ian so far. i would emphasize though that the search and rescue is still happening. and we are dealing with barrier islands that have no communication whatsoever. of course, the sheriff had made the statement yesterday that hundreds were dead. perhaps the fear is that hundreds had remained and it's completely demolished there and they haven't been able to get the community. those cell phone towers quite frankly. in the moment of not being able to communicate. not having cop firmed those deaths, what a scary moment for the families who still have not been able to contact their loved ones. it really is not fair yet to say how many people died from the

storm. it's also important to think about we do have impacts at the time of the storm but most deaths happen after the storm. so, clean up and so forth. >> ainsley: of course. we will learn more as the days progress. charleston, south carolina. south carolina getting hit. could affect myrtle beach north on the edge of north carolina. what do you expect for the folks there that are watching this morning and that are worried? >> evacuate if they tell you. to say and know that it's not just the cone itself. can you actually see as far as east and as far as west the forecast and the storm is very large. so the impact can go outside of that cone. be prepared for the conditions. the number one thing is you cannot outrun the water. you can shelter from wind but you cannot outrun the water and surge is deadly. >> ainsley: surge can be 7 to 9 feet. that's basically a story. that's high. that's high. >> absolutely. when you think about a surge. it's coming in. it's the wave action pushing that water up against the shoreline and come around high tide.

>> ainsley: here to react is stuart varney host of varney and company american built on fox business. what are we going to do? these insurance companies are going to be overwhelmed. >> stuart: overwhelmed a very strong word. put it like this ian is going to severely test an already severely challenged homeowner insurance industry. as you point out right there, the floridians already pay the highest premiums for homeowner insurance in the country. what is it 4200 bucks on average versus national average flormted hit by series of lawsuits and of course bad weather. six insurers left the state. 30 insurance everywheres are already under a watch list from the regulators. along comes this nasty storm ian with enormous damage sure to put even further pressure. they have in florida what's called the citizens property insurance company. that's a last resort insurer. it's got 1 million people insured under that citizens insurance thing. that is a government entity.

and they already set aside an extra $2 billion to shore up citizens. now, that might be necessary. so, it's going to severely test the industry. and whether it goes over the top or not, that's another story. as these reports of damage come in and you have seen what's happening. especially in fort myers. have you got to believe this is going to be perhaps the most costly storm in america's history. >> pete: if you have less insurance options and the risk remains high. then those premiums probably continue to go up. >> stuart: almost certainly. i don't see any way around that at all. >> brian: let's talk about what is happening in naples you know that area quite well. tell me about it. >> stuart: the real heavy duty damage came fort myers 20 miles north of my house. similar damage or strong damage also in naples near my house my house dodged a bullet. i have to say. we had a couple of trees down. lost power. no internet. no phone, no cell. and my daughter emma was in the house throughout the storm.

>> brian: your house? >> stuart: my house throughout the storm. she had her son with her, 16 month kenny. they are putting a brave face on the storm. that picture was taken during the storm. and the house was ratling and rolling and shaking sounded like a train going through but no serious damage to our house. >> ainsley: those windows are they hurricane proof. >> they are. and we have a generator. so the a.c. kicked back. in we dodged a bullet no way around it. just a few miles down the road. absolute devastation. >> pete: you thought tampa like everybody else did. and when it shifted it could have been naples but it happened to be fort myer. >> stuart: right before the storm we were thinking this thing is going to tampa 100 miles north and then it curved around and hit fort myers dead on. you have been showing pictures all morning of the devastation in fort myers. absolutely extraordinary. see that shot of that young man our reporter amidst all those boats lined up, chewed up. that's extraordinary. >> brian: looked like it got

towards myrtle beach. it's a larger area around that entire region where you are going to be feeling the effect particularly of that very heavy rainfall. here is the hurricane track as this storm lifts through the atlantic. been out there for at least 24 hours. picking a lot more moisture. making landfall somewhere between charleston. getting up towards myrtle beach as you get into the afternoon hours. and then it continues to lift its way up across south carolina and north carolina and areas where you will see incredibly heavy rainfall. winds currently at 35 miles per hour. those are only going to strengthen in the hours ahead as we continue to track this storm. >> pete: we will, adam. thank you very much. intense water rescues are underway across florida today. >> jacob. was submerged in water. luckily a group of good samaritans saved his life. they call themselves the collier county cowboys and two of them lemme and his cousin ben join us now. first of all, let me ask what were you doing out in that? were you out looking for people and at what point was that in the storm? >> good morning, good morning. yeah. we were out and noticed that no news was reporting on -- i know we were kind of risking our lives but we wanted to see how bad it was out there. no one as out there covering it. we went all the way to the beach and we noticed that the surge and hurricane was picking up quite a bit. >> pete: your intent was to go out to the beach to show people how bad it was so they wouldn't. that's inherently risky move anyway. and as you were there or on your way back you encountered this

gentleman. if you are not there. he doesn't survive. >> no, sir. no. he maybe had a few minutes. weigh an older gentleman. he couldn't push the door open. you know, from a distance. and we ended up walking over to him. took us about 10 minutes and able to get to him before it as was a little too late. >> pete: did you bite off a little more than you could chew? did you realize how bad it was going to be out there? >> yeah. i mean we took my brother's truck and we intentionally didn't want to go that far into it but once we got to the beach it wasn't terrible. buff once we got to the actual beach it was like 45 minutes later it really started to pick up and at that point the hurricane was kind of parallel with us and we kind of noticed then that man, we got a little too far and we started making our way back and that's when we saw this gentleman in distraught. everyone has a guardian angel i think we were that for them.

>> pete: you guys were there that moment and saved another person as well. a guy who had a house and you drove him out of it. >> was this as bad or worse than you expected? talk to us about the aftermath what you are seeing right now. >> yes, sir. i don't think anyone thought this hurricane was going to hit like this. and of course, last minute it took a little turn to shore. and that's when, you know, it hit fort myers just a few miles north of us. we did not think it was going to be this big at all. as you can see from the footage that's now coming in. it got pretty bad. >> pete: is this collier county cowboys, is this a thing? this isn't the last time we are going to hear from you? >> it's just a group of guys that, you know, we love god and we love people. and we love serving. really a group of guys that help others in our church and community. it kind of started off as kind
