just amazing pictures. up the bridge from us is fort myers beach. according to the governor who flew over all the barrier islands he described fort meyers beach the worst of them all. a total disaster. one person said it's wiped off the map. a lovely place. honeymooners, vacationers, white sandy beaches, condo towers decimated by the storm surge and the sand pushed up across a low-level island. now next door to us is captain mike, he is a boat captain, the guy that owns the two big airbnb boats. doing it his whole life. he rode out the storm on the boat and was in the water and now ended up in the boulevard. he said the storm surge is something to be reckoned with. take a listen.

rose to unfathomable record of more than seven feet shattering the previous record of nearly four feet. people are telling me recovery from this epic disaster will take them years. many are saying, however, they will not rebuild and plan to move away. storm chaser aaron rigsby measured the surge. they are standing on a vehicle. you know how high they are there above the stop sign. those probes were underwater a short time later. waves crashing over them by more than a foot. let's get the story now from aaron rigsby himself. that the good lord you're okay. you at one point had to make a run for it and get out of the way. tell us about it, aaron. >> we did. we were positioned west of where the eye came on shore.
8:08 am
we had to reposition further to the east. interesting thing about this was that a lot of times when we got back east we were closer to the back end of the eyewall. a lot of times when the hurricanes come onshore they are a little weaker on the back side. we saw some of the highest winds throughout the entire hurricane on the back side of that as we sheltered at a hotel in port charlotte. they were sustained winds of 120 to 130 miles an hour and tore pieces of the roof in the place we took shelter in and water pouring into the second and third floors of that hotel. >> harris: you are talking to people and have your story about being there. you are a storm chaser. other people have seen this before and didn't leave. talk to me about what people say in the after math of this storm, one that is considered the fifth motion powerful to ever hit the united states. >> that's the unfortunate thing

about documenting so many hurricanes. you hear time and time again it is too little to late. you talk to so many people and they wish they would have evacuated or so many stories of people that fortunately got out at the last second and able to get further inland but their home was swept away from the foundation. the thing -- it's part of the reason why we deploy these surge probes. they can bring awareness to people and hopefully help with that warning process and get more people to evacuate. we were noting this the entire time throughout the hurricane. we couldn't believe how much traffic was still on the roadway in the western and northwestern eyewall away from the storm surge. scouting locations why we get down days in advance to see valuable places to ride out the storm, when we were going through fort myers beach, florida alarming we saw people sitting on their front porch directly on the beach front. we hadn't seen it before. a lot of other hurricanes that have been in rural areas of

louisiana or lake charles you saw these mass evacuations. we really didn't see those huge lines. we saw a little bit of it on i- four but didn't see a mass exit any where and made us wonder how many people stayed behind. when we saw reports of the storm surge coming up, the waves of 15 feet, we just had a pit in our stomach. we had no idea how many people stayed behind. >> harris: quickly tell me about what your storm surge told you about this storm? i read off numbers, 7.2 is a record on top of the water that's already there. tell me what it measured exactly. >> well we had about 13 feet in the air on a six foot all expedition parked one foot above sea level. my chase partner max, who captured that video, is six fought four.
8:11 am
we had our storm surge probe at 13 feet above sea level and there were waves coming across it. it told us when this was all said and done it needs to be confirmed by the researchers and scientists. i believe the storm surge was 13 to 16 feet tall in the worst-hit areas. >> harris: that's a lot of water and claimed so much of what we're seeing. thank you so much for joining "focus" today. i'm glad you and your storm chasing team are safe. i have a heart for that. i did it for many years. you are much better than i was. thank you. >> thank you very much for having me. >> harris: hurricane ian is barreling toward south carolina. landfall expected at any moment now. the national hurricane center predicts landfall between charleston and myrtle beach. life threatening storm surge expected. officials are warning people to get to higher ground. south carolina senator tim scott has a serious warning. >> stay home. stay indoors right now. we are literally just beginning

gusts here as the storm intensifies and begins to move onshore and watching the water rise, a big concern. just beyond where i'm standing is the harbor and the atlanta and the storm coming in and the city of charleston. there are low-lying areas in the historic parts of town that people are familiar with in this beautiful city. this is the water we've been watching get higher over the mud and sweet grass the area is known for. this drive here acts as a natural levy to protect the city. if the water comes up quickly in a couple of hours they'll see an inundation and what they're worried about. the next couple hours are the most critical. we have seen folks out here on these roads although authorities are urging people to stay off of them. we even saw a mail van within the last hour or so. but authorities asking people to stay inside. there are thousands of power outages already and concerned about some downed wires and

my name is joshua florence, and one thing i learned being a firefighter is plan ahead. you don't know what you're getting into, but at the end of the day, you know you have a team behind you that can help you. not having to worry about the future makes it possible to make the present as best as it can be for everybody.

>> harris: situation we're working -- or watching rather after hurricane ian as they get assets in the air. live pictures, is the sanibel causeway. it is the only way in and off the island by vehicle, so you see a chopper there, they've been bringing in boats trying to rescue people and have done it successfully. but the devastation to this causeway is unreal. the governor has said it is chunks of it gone if several

sections. we wanted to give you the latest live pictures as they fly over sanibel and parts of fort myers at this hour and as they pull out maybe we'll see more of it. and we can. okay. they're landing trying to get there and get people out. clean water is the issue. they are taking care of business in florida. we'll stay on it. for now a wild house overnight committee hearing ohhing abortion restrictions after georgia's democratic nominee stacey abrams said that there is no such thing as a feetal heartbeat at six weeks. >> forcing poor and working class people to give birth against their will, against their consent, against their ability to provide for themselves or a child is a

profound economic issue and it is certainly a way to keep a workforce basically conscripted. >> harris: there's this. >> so men can have pregnancies especially trans men. somebody with a uterus may have the capability of becoming pregnant whether a woman or man. >> okay, we're done. this isn't complicated. if a person has a uterus -- >> harris: sean duffy fox news contributor and former wisconsin congressman your reaction. >> i don't miss that, harris, having come out of congress. it is insanity. ocasio-cortez implemented the green new deal that wreaked havoc on our economy. neighborhoods aren't safe because of defunding the police.

i look at this and strong families mean strong countries. kids are important to the future of america. what an elitist to say that you have to be rich to have kids. if you are poor you can't have kids. some of my best friends came up in poverty and they are great, wonderful people. by the way, you can change your name and body parts but you can't change the fact that if you were born a male you can't have a baby. we have to play this game of names of what's a man and woman? let's get back to truth. men can't have babies, simple, flat, easy. >> harris: what you are responding to are two different things but tied together. it is changing the definitions of things and i wonder if people on the left understand what is happening there, that the manipulation that's going on is not supportive of the transgender, lgbt community. if they really cared they wouldn't be handling it quite this way. it is interesting. politics intervene in such messy

>> harris: congressman, a usa today opinion writer, what his memory laps says about the late congresswoman really told us. your reaction before we have to end the show. >> jackie was a wonderful human being loved by both sides of the aisles. this speaks volumes about how far he has slipped mentally in his capabilities and how they have degraded. i look at this, joe biden has an approval rating of 39%. if the media wasn't covering for him it wouldn't be far worse. they don't hear these stories. the left wing media won't talk about the problems biden is having. calling out a former member of congress who is deceased. he lowered the flag for her. he forgot. >> harris: the other media isn't covering it. it is important for people to know the president of the united states and his team, rather than

saying they made a mistake, everybody does. oh, we've got breaking news. sit tight for a second. an tony blinken is at the department of state talking about ukraine. >> while also combating the climate crisis. the united states will release the strategy forfurther these goals and won't to work closely with canada to make them a reality. like the united states, canada is both an atlantic and pacific nation and we saw that last week at the general assembly where canada joined both partners in the pacific and strengthening atlantic ministerial meetings. it will further our shared goals as a pas -- we're working to end epidemics. we see canada's leadership on display at the general assembly

with the prime minister's generous contribution of more than $900 million to the global fund in its seventh replenishment. canada, mexico and the united states are partners in the usmca. we're strengthening supply changes and strong labor rights protections and the clean energy transition across an increasingly integrated north america. since december, our countries have partnered to mobilize more than 295 million in international commitments for haiti. we deeply appreciate canada's leadership in launching the u.n. basket fund to strengthen law enforcement in haiti. we are proud to support that. in these extremely difficult times for the haitian people, we're urging more partner nations to contribute to this vital cause. we also applaud canada's leadership against arbitrary detention in state to state relations.

this is bringing nations together to send the clearest message that the arbitrary detention of foreign nationals is unacceptable and governments that engage in this practice will face consequences. we discussed ways to deepen what is an already remarkably vibrant commercial and trade relationship to boost our collective competitiveness to create good paying jobs for people on both sides of our border. the united states and canada are already each other's largest trading partners with over $2 billion if goods and services that pass between us every single day. >> harris: secretary blinken explaining they are now going to be more severe sanctions put onto russia. russia has now moved to annex parts of ukraine where they fought and so what they're saying is basically that becomes part of russia. we want to take it. we're taking it. they did it with crimea. the president of the united states and secretary blinken now

are talking about the war in ukraine is a place where he cannot do that. so we'll continue to watch this story. what is really interesting is perhaps -- here is a question to consider -- is putin, the dictator in russia, trying to say the war which he is not winning right now, the war is coming to an end and this is what he is telling the world would be palpable for him to pull out? he will just keep those four sections that he wants and then he will walk away and what the president zelensky of ukraine has said no, absolutely not. you don't get to wage war on a sovereign nation, take parts of it and say the war is over and i'll lose and i keep the little bit i took. the united states is firing back with the same message no, it's unacceptable and we won't recognize it as such. so that's what we were watching with secretary antony blinken.
8:59 am
we'll see what russia's response will be. they were talking about a nuclear transition and putin wants to do it. is it bluffing? is this enough to call his bluff and see what his next move is? you can't just annex parts of countries that you want to have. let's get started now with we are expected here from governor desantis as we get a clear picture of the homes in the lives destroyed by hurricane ian. florida officials are now saying at least 21 people have died. it is returned to hurricane strength and is bearing down and it soon expected to make landfall of storm surge of 7 feet, charleston residents who have been warned to get to higher ground are fleeing the
