everybody. we go straight to a fox weather alert. florida is still reeling from the devastation caused by hurricane ian. >> we watched everything just go flying by. we lost so much at this point so we appreciate everybody. >> we are very much concerned about the storm. i should have left. i shouldn't have stayed. >> most of the time, we are all kind of doing our own thing just listening to the winds, which were horrible for hours. >> reporter: the storm soaking the mid atlantic making way up north and the death toll in florida and the carolinas unfortunately continues to climb. alexandria hoff is live in fort meyers beach this morning with more. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. we're on san carlos island part of fort meyers beach and this is a challenging rescue and sadly a

recovery operation has had to become and look at mangled pieces of metal and boats on top of hopes and look at residences and think, my goodness, i hope they were among those that got out and if they try to ride out the storm, you wonder where are they now. it's a hard thing to see. according to lee county sheriff's office, just yesterday there were 6 to 700 rescues made and sheriff is reporting 35 deaths in the didn't and that state number is in the 40s and likely to rise with individual numbers counties are reporting. during the daylight hours today, 30 miles north, the coast guard have a rescue operation to help people evacuate from pine island. that's as the national guard has been assisting with distribution sites around the state supplying water and food to those in need. in lee county where we're at, 64% of people are still without power right now and as for internet, governor desantis said

republican candidate for president of the united states. you have joy reed launching an extreme if not familiar campaign against a republican politician. pete: for the people of florida, he's handled this about as good as you can hope considering the hurricane of this size and magnitude and he's pointing out the obvious to the rest of us and most of the country. don't approach someone's home. you don't know. they're prepared and able to defend themselves. black, white, brown, doesn't matter. it's their property, they can defend it and defend their lives. i think it's a foolish political approach and not going to work against desantis and plays into twitter and the elite view that behind every maga republican is actually a racist. rachel: behind every looter is a black person assuming that's the case as well.

the racism goes both ways and again, it's a bad move politically because when you're in a natural disas and you're a citizen of florida, you want your governor to come out ahead of this and say we're a law and order state and we're not putting up with looting and suffering and in misery and trying to put your lives back. pete: and you have 911 systems that have gone down. if you can't call 911, what will you do? will: and the governor has their back. that means a lot. as is the case is joy reid's own racism. rachel: absolutely. will: bill has been at the border for the fox news channel at this point i think well over years at this point. rachel: open lane for him. there's no one else beside him and griff there and the migrants. will: bringing the news story to all of us as rachel point-blank layupses out in lou -- points out in lieu of anyone else

countries wowed allow a border like that to take place in their country. the radical democrats want to turn america into one giant sanctuary for dangerous and horribly dangerous criminal aliens and in the republican party, we believe our country should be a sanctuary for law-abiding citizens that law our country and respect our country and love our flag. pete: big rally last night. i believe you'll talk to tudor dixon who was at that rally. talk about extremism going into the midterm, 37 days out. ask democrats, how far are you willing to go with abortion? all the way to birth? is the border circuit court secure? do you believe in cashless bail or support black lives matter. ask them. they can't answer on a common sense way, on any of those questions. they take a harbor very extreme positions. will: they dent think it's an issue. think don't think it's something

that matters to voters and that it's a pet project of the right wing. they think what matters in the country is not the border, not inflation, they do not think it's any of the things like crime pollicis that affect your security when you walk down the street. they think that's talking points from crazy people. they think what matters is january 6, and exclusively january 6. i mean it. look at their responses. look at the focus. this is what they think is the number one issue facing the country. not your life. rachel: you're 100% right. if you look at the attorney general from new york city, what is she focused on? donald trump. this is a crime ridden disgusting city in so many ways, and it's filthy, it's full of crime, even our emts who are trying to save people are getting ki killed and we'll talk about that later on in the show, but she's focused on what she calls protecting banks as opposed to protecting citizens

so their priorities are totally wrong, and hopefully they'll pay a price and when you have to pull women off the boarder and send him to dc because no one will ask these question, i'm not sure our media is holding those accountable. pete: there's no one in the media but we thankfufully have guys that do the heavy lifting. rachel: that's true. pete: still ahead, who's to blame for the nord stream pipeline sabotage. russian born intelligence officer said the attack is out of putin's play book. we'll ask her about that coming up. j that's the title of her book by the way. female athletes are banned from using their own locker room after expressing discomfort with a man sharing their space. that story is next.

stuart, i didn't realize the shockingly low number of florideans that have federal flood insurance and therefore they may not even qualify. >> that's what makes the disaster even worse. on the southwest coastline of florida, way under half of the properties have flood insurance. way under half and they've been decimated. go in land towards orlando and it's below 2% that have flood insurance. these people are now facing financial disaster and you point out those nine counties declared disaster areas, that pays for minor damage and minor cleanup and does not pay for flood insurance. now, just go forward a little bit -- pete: yeah, that was the question. how does it play out? >> over a long period of time, there's going to be money districted but it will take a very long time to get florida booming again. in fact, it'll take years. you've got all these people who have facing financial ruin. i don't think that's too strong

3:35 am
