>> greg: we are out of time. thanks to our studio audience. "fox news @ night" with dreamy trace gallagher is next. i am greg gutfeld. i love you, america. >> trace: hello and welcome to "fox news @ night." i am trace gallagher in washington. breaking tonight, mother walked back from the white house press department following some eyebrow-raising comments from vice president kamala harris whe she seemed to suggest federal aid to hurricane victims should be distributed based on race. president biden has been hailing a reduction in gas prices so why

are so many on the west coast, even the midwest, feeling new pain of the pump? "fox news @ night" investigates why some areas are actually seeing prices rise. >> i know if nancy pelosi was no longer here there would be a lot of democrats that would feel free to do exactly what they know is best: vote for a secure border and work with us to have a bill on immigration reform. >> trace: what do democrats really think about border security? we asked some of them, including dhs secretary mallorca's. bill melugin joins us. fresh reaction from jim jordan about the ongoing crisis that are seven border. taking one for the team, that's what a democratic senate candidate said about steve scalise after the house republican was shot nearly killed at a congressional base for practice. our panel will have a lot to say about that later. we begin with the white house in
9:02 pm
cleanup mode following controversial remarks from vp kamala harris. white house white house corresponding kevin corke gets us started with those details. kevin, good evening. >> evening. great to have you on board. good evening, everybody. on the day that saw the president tore hurricane ravaged puerto rico at home it was a firestorm caused by his vice president they continued to reverberate across the political landscape. in case you missed it, as the roiling storm receded, the vp said this about helping those in need. "we have to address this in no way that is about giving resources based on equity. understanding that we fight for equality but also we need to fight for equity." the comments as you can imagine caused many to wonder if the administration would do a lot help based solely on race which of course is not the case. today harris dodged questions about her comments which is if nothing else temporarily knocked the white house off message.
9:03 pm
"we are committed to quickly getting resources to all communities impacted." this is president biden promised $60 million in aid to puerto rico. current death toll from hurricane fiona standing at 25. sadly there are still over 100,000 residents on the island without power. on wednesday, the president makes his way to the great state of florida. estimates put the damage somewhere north of $100 billion already. >> trace: that is just the tangible things. boats and houses. tourism. >> memories to say the least. >> trace: the long hard road to recovery, still in early stages in southwest florida.
9:04 pm
the death toll and damage toll continues to rise. live to charles watson on the recovery efforts in venice, florida. good evening. >> good evening. millions of floridians continued to feel the effects of hurricane ian specifically when you talk about flooding. look at this neighborhood in venice, it's flooded. the water has gone so high that residents have been forced to jump in boats and kayaks to get to and from their homes. this is water from the river. it took on a lot of rain and a short amount of time from hurricane ian and over the weekend it started spilling out into neighborhoods and flooding homes as far as the eye could see. people are essentially trapped if they don't have a water vehicle to get out. this is not a problem that's only affecting coastal cities. we drove 50 miles inland to arcadia they are dealing with flooding that's washed away roads and in many cases made it nearly impossible for folks to
9:05 pm
get around. the florida joint task forces that out there conducting active search and rescue operations. so far we are told they rescued more than 2300 people statewide. even in a boat it's hard to get around with all the debris. we spoke to some residents who say flooding is making a tough situation worse because folks can't survive financially. >> it's a struggle. we've got to juggle. feed our families, pay our bi bills. >> some spots like a bomb went off. donnelly kind of works the way we expected. >> quickly, on sanibel island, we heard from what governor ron desantis who said the state is taking -- bids from companies so they can hopefully build a temporary bridge so people can get to in -- get to
9:06 pm
and from the island. hopefully folks who live there won't have to leave. >> trace: that bridge is going to take a while. charles watson in venice, florida, thank you. unwelcome reminder tonight that the high cost of living remains a drag on the u.s. economy. as gasoline prices continue to creep back up or in some cases jump back up. aaa says the national average stands at $3.80 per gallon, up $0.07 from a week ago. in a lot of places, it's up a lot more than $0.07. jeff paul live in los angeles. the gas hike capital of the u.s. with more on how and why folks at west have it worse than a lot of other people. good evening. >> trace, we checked the price of regular unleaded outside the studios here in los angeles and right now it's nearly seven bucks a gallon hovering right at $6.97 per gallon. statewide the price is much better.
9:07 pm
california's average price for gas is sitting at $6.38 a gallon. not only is at the highest in the country, it's more than double the average price than it is in six states. elsewhere is a simpler story. prices in the region have jumped anywhere from $0.33 to $0.55 just the last week. >> essential in daily life, school, work, try to make a living. >> turn off lights. use a little less. television. keep it on all night but now i turn it off. my bill with the gas, the bills, it's hurting. >> analysts say when it comes to california, the state doesn't have many refineries to begin with so it has to import from other states. several of those refineries are dealing with planned and unplanned maintenance. that is leading to the lowest level of gas supply in a decade.
9:08 pm
>> oil refineries are the only industry, their factories break, they make more money when it's broken then when it's working. that doesn't mean that the price of gas has to go up. it means the oil companies have an excuse to raise the price because there is scarcity in the market. >> california governor gavin newsom says he's asking refineries to switch over to a cheaper winter blend gas early that could eventually lower prices by about $0.25. some experts say it could take a month to get back to prices that we just saw a few weeks ago. >> trace: live for us in los angeles, jeff, thank you. as the illegal immigration crisis persists with no end in sight, correspondent bill melugin who has spent countless days and weeks reporting on the surgeons from our southern border has come to washington to press lawmakers on the problems
9:09 pm
he's witnessed firsthand. i want to start because you went out and talked to some democratic lawmakers. they really wouldn't talk to you. >> we try to talk to them. some did talk about the border with us. very few of them. several others wouldn't make eye contact, let alone talk about the border. 250,000 unaccompanied migrant children arrived at the border since president biden took office. any issue with that? last question, is the border secure? do you agree with the administration that the border is secure? in your opinion, is the border secure? >> i have to go give a speech. didn't you hear me? >> i heard you. it's a quick question. is the border secure? >> trace: it's amazing to me you have these democratic lawmakers who have been saying there is no crisis of the border. yet they will respond to you. >> that's part of the reason why we came out. one of the lawmakers who falsely
9:10 pm
smeared the horseback border patrol agents saying that they were whipping migrants and accuse them of being white ceramicist. we come face-to-face with her and ask and she has nothing to say. the chairman of the homeland security committee, he had nothing to say about the border. we went to alejandra my arcus' house, reached out to dhs, said we will be in town. we went to his house and he didn't have a second to talk the border. >> trace: he is charged with making sure that the laws of the border are followed. they are being broken every day. you went to talk to him and he refused to talk to you. which i thought was somewhat shocking. i want to play this we will get your take. >> reached out to your office and asked to talk to you. they blew us off. 900,000 got aways. >> you reached out repeatedly and they snubbed you. they do not give you any kind of response. then you go to his house.
9:11 pm
as he said, look, i don't want to go to the guys house but you had to get an answer in you didn't. >> we gave him a week long heads that was the main question i wanted to ask. we keep hearing and testify before congress and tell the american border that the border is secure and we have "operational control" of the border. how is not possible only have almost a million got away s slip across the border. he should come up with some sort of an answer. here are some of those got aways. we shot this three weeks ago. they're usually dressed in camouflage. you'll see them running off of the open desert, not a single one were caught. they ran off and were never apprehended and they are just a few of more than 599,000 this fiscal year they made it through. >> trace: it's important for context, talk about the god-aways, they are not included in the real numbers. the real numbers are astounding. >> so far this fiscal year,
9:12 pm
2022. 2.1 million of the illegal crossings. that doesn't count the got-aways. it doesn't include the ones they don't know about, that once they never see. >> trace: it's amazing. i want to put this up on the screen because there's little bit of a disappointment in the white house because bill melugin is covering this story, in recent days, several current and former white house and administration officials expressed to west wing playbook their increasing frustration with his on-air coverage. his being bill melugin, arguing there is an alarmist quality to designed to defeat, political narratives rather than illuminate the actual issues feeding the migrant flow. you have video cameras. you are not making this stuff up. you're not saying that sources are telling me people are crossing. we see it every single day. >> if they would go visit
9:13 pm
themselves. they haven't. it was bizarre that the white house felt the need to whisper in the ear of politico to write something about me and say my coverages alarmist. what's happening is alarming. look at the video. last summer. the numbers have only gotten worse since then. they can write whatever they want to. they can say whatever they want. we have a great team at the border. >> trace: your coverage is not alarmist. it's exceptional and it has been for the better part of a year and a half. let's get a lawmakers take on the substance of the bills coverage at the southern border crisis. we bring in ranking member of the house judiciary committee. commerce men jim jordan. thank you for being along on our maiden voyage. i want to get your take. what do you make of the biden administration being annoyed that fox news, especially bill melugin, are covering this crisis at the border.
9:14 pm
>> of course they are annoyed because they don't want the american people getting the truth. they are doing this to the border. they don't want a network like yours given the facts of the american people that they have done this. we have no border. so of course they're going to take this position. like i said, this is premeditated. mayorkas says the border is secure. everyone knows it isn't. you're showing them it isn't and that's what they don't like and of course they're going to complain about it. >> trace: for clarification, these are the responsibilities, the top three responsibilities of dhs. protecting the american people from terrorist threats. fulfilling our mission means securing our borders. when it comes to immigration, we need to facilitate legal immigration while we crack down on those who violate our nation's laws and yet the director of homeland security would not talk to fox news about the border. it seems like it is unheard of
9:15 pm
in past years. >> he won't talk about it because easier for my three. he hasn't met any of the objectives of what he supposed to be doing. when he testified in front of the judiciary committee, i asked, at the time we knew a 42 individuals who had come across as illegal migrants on the terrorist watch list. i asked, mr. secretary, what is the status of those 42 individuals on the terrorist watch list in his answers shocked me and shocked everyone. he said i don't know. think about that? come in front of the judiciary committee. jurisdiction over immigration law, border security and you answer the question about the status of the people on the terrorist watch list by saying i don't know. that's how bad it is. that's why they don't like fox doing the good work they are doing given the truth of the facts of the american people. >> trace: you kind of tedious up because you were talking with the fact of the borders are
9:16 pm
secure. i want to play you some sound. one is from last year about this time. the other one is about ten days ago. we are talking about the dhs secretary followed by the vice president. we'll get your response. watch. >> is the border more secure under your leadership than when you started? >> congressman, the border is secure. we are executing our plan. i have been very clear and unequivocal in that regard. >> we have a secure border in that that is a priority for any nation, including ours and our administration. >> trace: almost to the date, year after year, you have dhs saying the border is secure. we had a million .6 coming across. you have the vice president ten days ago saying that the border is secure when we have 2 million coming across. these are untruths. they keep going. they don't appear to be consequences.
9:17 pm
>> they are giving the american people a false story. they've changed three things. they are no longer remain in mexico policy, stopped building the wall. big about the message being sent to migrants. you can't fault him migrant for wanting to come to the greatest country ever. the messages if you come to our country you won't have to stay in mexico. no wall to get over. and you won't be deported. you'll be able to go wherever you want to go. that's the message. nothing is going to change. they can keep saying as often as they do that the border is secure but everyone with common sense and that's the american people, everyone knows that's not the case. >> trace: i say that there are no consequences but you look at how the trends are going, where latino voters are heading. starting in 2016, 2020, 2022. i want to play this from msnbc of all places by the way talking to democrats. we don't have it. democrats, the question was
9:18 pm
simply why are you now a republican? the answer was because as a democrat i feel like i am unsafe. they are not protecting us. these are people who live on the border. latinos. they make a very valid point. >> yeah. the border is not secure and then there's the fentanyl problem, the cartel problem, fundamental problem with crime so like every american family, i think this election is about four key issues plus freedom. we went from a secure border to no border. safe streets, record crime. $2 gas to $5 gas. stable prices to record inflation. oh, by the way, harm to the country. democrats are coming after the amendments and due process in weaponizing government. they don't like all that. i think and 36 days they're going to show up in a big way and say it's time for a change. driving so much of it is the fact that we no longer have a border and it's intentional. it's premeditated.
9:19 pm
it's by design what they are doing to the country which is the scariest thing of all. >> trace: do you think of these midterms don't go their way, do you think that they would change their strategy on the border? >> i kind of doubt it because the left controls the party. even if biden and mayorkas wanted to change, i don't think the hard left that controls the democrat party, i don't think that they would let them. i hope they do. think of all the ironies. it's amazing to me. sanctuary cities until it's time to provide sanctuary then they'll complain. you've got the mayor of chicago, dick durbin and others, what happened on martha's vineyard. i don't think they will. the left controls that party and they probably won't let people, if there were democrats with common sense who wanted to do the right thing, i doubt the left would let them. >> trace: congressman jim jordan, thank you for coming on. >> you bet.
