hurricane ian. for many there simply is no home to return too. and yet there is also no shortage for those who are focusing not on what they lost, but how they can help. nate foy is live in fort myers was going on here. i'd a friend who lost her house completely. it's a total sand, just wiped away they are down there helping their neighbors try to get things back together. how is that spirit going on this sunday? >> eric, i've got to totally we are seeing down here is staggering. whether it be on fort myers beach like you said a lot of the island does not exist anymore, homes have been destroyed for a downtown fort myers at centennial park where a memorial is growing unfortunately for all the people who died during hurricane ian. i guess my per photographer, nick to show you this memorial i counted 22 pictures with names, each one has a corresponding cross. you see people here in fort myers coming and taking videos
1:19 pm
paying their respects, flowers and candles at the base of this but you cannot see it but at the end there are some paintbrushes and pieces of wood and brick were people can write their own messages. some of these messages are for individuals. others are for southwest florida. now, i mention unfortunately the number of victims is growing. we are seeing that especially in fort myers beach to take a look at this video the florida task force to rescue team is using dogs, drones and boats to scour the island. you mentioned residents can access part of the island for that the north area fort myers beach for the southern part still blocked off as crews continued searching. however the old people off the island alive just recently as this week. some of us rescue some of those people deciding it is now finally time to leave. but those people have lost everything but including a physician's assistants who we met she lost her practice during the hurricane right on fort myers beach. but in that's our time of need she is still helping others, look at this.

1:26 pm
them a place where they could bring it in there. so they could distribute that to other farmers and people that have animals, horses, dogs and stuff. people have spent so much money on things there. it's just one thing we can help them out with. and just being there for the people there and the community with the distribution center people bring food and everything there. and being in it to were able to distributed to other locations in everything, that is where it is needed and everything. people want to give. the biggest challenge with the storms this people do not know where to give at and everything. we are just a place -- my kids our local market here. we know where to go with that. arthel: yes. the red cross helps out, many companies are helping you are right. people do want to give that's

saying. this is in fact led by the women up by ron his they all we want is freedom. but they are backed by men. people all across the country in every city. this is a pure grass roots movements it's not attached to any religion or any city, or any political group. this is a pure, pure movement of the iranian people who have just one message for the world. they are fighting for their freedom. they will not back down anytime soon. this is truly the best chance that they have ever had to topple this regime. eric: what's on the west do? what can the white house or to give that a push to help them to get rid of this regime once and for all? >> the most important question. they are asking for support, reckless or they're asking for the mainstream media to cover this for their estimate for all kinds of support. it will start with that verbal support but we can't just stop at the podium. the next step will be for the united states to back away from the jcpoa. from the nuclear negotiation table.
1:38 pm
it is one thing the ironic envoy for the united states said this week we are not going to support regime change and i want even though we do verbalize support for the protesters. it is one thing to not support regime change but it's another to get them billions of dollars. do you really have to support their terrorism? do you have to support the money the regime will put back into the revolutionary guard into the besieged forces into the morality police, and the list goes on and on. united states has to understand the gravity of legitimizing this regime by giving them billions of dollars paid by giving them that handshake and letting them off the hook for settlement of the human rights violations. the third will be to creatively come up with a way to give her resources, organizational resources to the protesters to give than the catalyst for the next step in this movement to continue. what president obama during the green revolution was seen as making real blunder and mistake,
1:39 pm
critics saying he had an opportunity, could have had an opportunity back then. what more could president biden do right now as well as others as you say to try and support them? he's not going to try to get out of the iranian nuclear dear. give them billions of hours. realistically folks watching right now what can we do? >> continued with the support. eric, i thank you for bringing this to people's attention. after i was all with you on fox news last time i got so many messages thanking fox news and thanking you for giving this airtime, continue showing the video sprayed those who are at home continue with the hashtags. this is a human rights movement is a pure movement as i said but is not something that is political. it should be bipartisan. they should have support across the board the biden administration of the trump administration or the obama administration does not matter who is in office is for the betterment of the world to stop the biggest global supporter of terrorism.

happen to them and i want to be able to help them in it and navigate them to a better life. courts have our system academy? is about 35 minutes. >> were to go from guardian it's an hour of a driver. quickset is a big difference. >> thanks chris. captain aaron mccranie of lapd joins us now. captain i love this concept. tell us more. how does housing for hires work? >> thank you very much, arthel, having me on. i think this is so important. in los angeles a very competitive salary $71000 to start. however, as everyone knows but can be low but expensive when it comes to housing. being able to offer a bonus incentive over the salary for a period of time is going to be tremendous and helping them through. as it stands right now. >> you go ahead i'm sorry. >> as it stands right now i
1:47 pm
expectation 1500 get decent housing in the city of los angeles that can be very challenging. we feel by having the opportunity to have an additional $1000 on top of their salary will help to get them through a housing crunch. at least for the first 24 months of their career. arthel: that's a big deal but mean, $1500 is not going to get you a lot in l a but $2500 a month we'll get you something pretty decent. and if you're talking about that amount of money, it's going to amount to $24,000 over the course of those two years, so that is pretty remarkable. have you noticed an increase in applications? um how many more officers would you like to hire? and are you attracting quality candidates through this program? so we have very high goals in the city of los angeles. we normally higher approximately 500 per year, but we also lose approximately 500 per year, so we pretty much end up on par. a
1:48 pm
parity with each you know, each passing year. however after the pandemic, the social unrest um the reallocation of funds we didn't hire, um in 2021. so instead of hiring approximately 500, we hired 79. so we went from having over 10,000 officers on the department to now we're under 9300. so we have big goals and big numbers we have to make up for and we feel that it's programs and incentives like this. that's going to help us get there and again. this problem is not just going to city of los angeles. this is a national problem. agencies across the nation are faced with this same issue, and they're trying to come up with some kind of incentives to get more candidates interested to come in. absolutely that it's tough. however we have plenty of people that want this job plenty people who are interested in being a police officer and want to serve the community, so i'm very encouraged and look forward to
1:49 pm
what this program is going to bring to the department. it is so important to have the officers live in the communities they serve again. so i understand that a businessman, lapd commissioner steve sober, roth came up with this idea and even recruited big money donors to fund this program. so is mr sober off in it for the long haul. i mean, how long will funding for lapd housing for hires be available? well i can tell you, commissioner silver off has done a phenomenal job. what happened was that i would report that police commission about where we are in hiring and you know him being the business person and the real estate person that he is. he recognized the value of this program. um he definitely is in for the long term, and i know that he has restyled to his connections, his context the people in the business world, the real estate world and he has, and i tell you, it really hasn't primarily has to do with his push that we have raised probably over $2 million that will cover at least
