a russian born u.s. defense intel officer says this is just the beginning. >> what putin has done is a diversion. the narrative about the security counsel meeting later in the day is a classic deception. this retaliation should have been expected, including by president biden and president zelenskyy. putin is switching strategies to what is called the new generation warfare, where he's going to target exactly what he's targeting right now, the civilian infrastructure. president biden at this point has no de-escalation strategy, and that is very dangerous. >> ukrainian president zelenskyy saying, "they are trying to destroy us and wipe us off the face of the earth. the air alarm does not stop the threat in ukraine. there are missiles hitting and unfortunately there are dead and wounded.

he said his 16-year-old daughters were home alone doing their homework when they heard gunfire outside their front door. the bullets landed just 30 feet away as the girls locked themselves in the bathroom and called 911. >> it hits really close to home when it shows up on your front doorstep. i'm just so grateful that my daughters responded as quickly and as swiftly as they did. >> authority say three teenagers were walking down the street when someone in an suv open fire. two of them were shot before taking cover under zeldin's front porch. the conservative congressman has been vocal on new york's soft-on-crime policies, contributing to the spiraling crime crisis, but he says it's past the point of politics. listen. >> as far as standing here, you're talking about politics, i'm surprised that you or someone else might even look at it that way. at what point are we supposed to talk about the crime on our own

streets? i'm standing in front of the crime scene tape in front of my own house. you can't get me more outraged than right now. >> his opponent, kathy hochul, took to twitter to say, "as we await more details, i'm relieved to hear the zeldin family is safe and grateful for law enforcement's quick response." this is the second high-profile instance of violent crime to impact zeldin. in july he was attacked on stage while giving a speech in upstate new york. authorities believe the incident outside his home to be gang-related and "unrelated to the residents of the house," as they continue to search for the government. >> thanks, broke. i can't imagine that surely new york, in suffolk county, i can't imagine the crime rate is significantly higher than places in the bronx or even in the city, in new york city. we have spoken to them on this show in this network, these lifelong democrats are turning

their backs against people like kathy hochul, who will revisit these soft on crime bail reform laws until after the race, which is not what you new yorkneeds right now. they want to vote for lee zeldin because crime is the number one issue on their mind. it'll be interesting to see how voters vote when it comes to these elections, but kathy hochul is still leading the polls. i just wonder how many people are paying attention to this. i want to point out that zeldin says he wants cops on every new york city street. but let me put it this way, the cops' hands are tied because of leadership in new york. it's going to take leadership changes in new york city, in new york state, to change anything like this. these cops are afraid of doing their jobs. the mayor is a former nypd officer. he might be higher than officer when he left, but you would

think you'd be pushing harder to get criminals off the street, and that's the first step. leave the criminals in jail. don't just let them out, because the paperwork isn't even finished before they are lit back out. and i have things like this happening. it is too little 6-year-old girls, i'm sure they were scared to death, and here he was with his wife trying to go make a difference. talk about making a difference with the city and with the state. his little innocent girls were at home. granted, had nothing to do with it, but i'm sure he feels horrible about it, and is not his fault. >> i think you hit the point right off the bat. this happened in suburbia. i think we've come to the expectation that our cities are problem, and there is no solution anytime soon for them, but suburbia, my original thought is that i live in suburbia just like zeldin. i've got two daughters just like zeldin. i think a lot of us have had this thought. what if this happened in my house? the random violence is not supposed to happen in suburbia. but thanks to soft-on-crime

in new york. 54 in raleigh and 69 in dallas. a little bit of a warm up across the great lakes, the midwest, and even the northeast over the next couple of days. it was cold over the weekend, or cooler than average, so we will warm things up, and then we are going to get that seesaw temperatures over the next few weeks because we are getting into the seasonal changes. forecast for today, pretty good for much of the country. we do have some tropical moisture making its way into texas and parts of the southwest today and tomorrow. we will worry about the potential of some flash flooding around the big bend of texas, up toward midland, texas, and then through tuesday we could see the potential for some showers for southern california in toward the southwest in texas. again, that's some of the tropical moisture working its way in through the gulf and the pacific. the next round of widespread rain moving in from the northern plains and upper midwest across the great lakes on wednesday, and then into the northeast. if you are planning out what you're going to do this week, if

the army, they are 15,000 15,000 soldier short. a loss of 7500 service members and the national guard. the navy met only 10% of their goal. the main core, 30% of their goal. air force met 10%. the defense secretary is focusing on renaming at least nine military bases that he claims are tied to the confederacy. do you think these lacking numbers are actually the fact that the military is perhaps going woke? >> wokeness is the problem here and at some point you have to stop blaming covid. they are at the point where we need to start enlisting brave men and women who just want to serve our country like i did. not just me, but my father and my brother and my sister, we all went to west point, and we understand what it takes to fight wars in a foreign land. that's the kind of people that we want in our country. the kind of mentality it takes to do that, it doesn't mean we care about wokeness, that we care about pronouns. we just want to learn how to

the cofounder of save austin now. he joins us now. matt, she wasn't asked about the border. she didn't answer, yet she's in texas, a second time in 30 days. a lot of people are saying that maybe this was just a political ploy to try and get votes, especially in that red state of texas. what did the voters think of this visit? >> well, she was in texas for a fund-raiser in austin for the local democratic party. that is what her stated purpose was being here. as far as i know, she didn't do anything else. most texans would have loved to see her take the opportunity tor flight and head down to the actual border, where the border crisis is clearly hitting. it's not hitting in el paso where she went for a couple hours over a year ago. is hitting in mcallen, brownsville, laredo, and between those areas. that's what the administration needs to see to understand what

their policies are doing to communities. >> i think, at a bare minimum, just to show face, this administration would go down there and, at least, like i said, bare minimum, say they are here and see the issue. why do you think they are constantly pushing back on this? >> it's probably two reasons. one, they know that if they go down there it'll get an enormous amount of media attention and focus national and white house reporters to ask questions they haven't had to answer up to this point. and they don't want their mind to be changed by the fact on the ground. when the biden administration and did catch and release, when they took all these other policy decisions that basically said the border is not going to be enforced, they sort of winked at anyone who wanted to come over it, you see absolute flooding across they are, and that's why we are having fentanyl seizures at ten times record levels. when you consider the potency of fentanyl, it's absolutely destroying communities. >> and this is honestly very

heavy question. i don't know that anyone can answer it other than someone in the biden administration, but when border patrol agents have encountered millions of people and you talk about the fentanyl crisis, it's affecting people in the u.s., and you saw that murder on the vegas strip. i'm not saying that's connected to this particular border crisis since biden has been in the administration, but it makes you want to have secure everything is. at what point does this have to be stopped? or does it have to be completely a change of administration? >> you hope that if republicans are able to take that to the house that they can put some tension on this issue to get some action. i think house republicans are talking about impeaching the homeland security secretary, alejandro mayorkas, maybe taking it beyond that. the question is a good one, and that is if it requires the white house to change. the answer is probably yes. if you think about that policies trump had on that issue versus biden, they are very different. i doubt those policies would

be so incredibly high. there is a statement from valero, from their vice president of government affairs, he responded and said california is the most expensive operating environment in the country, a very hostile regulatory environment for refining, adding further costs, in the form of taxes and regulatory constraints. it's only going to further strain the fuel market and adversely impact refiners. those costs get passed on to consumers. well, that's what's happening. now governor newsom was a special legislative session to be called in december to talk about new taxes, more taxes put on companies like valero that are refining in the state. here they are saying you're a bunch of greedy oil refineries, but we are going to taxi to the hills and take all your profits. which is it going to be in the state of california? >> if you look at some of the comments from people in california on this article, they say you can't make this stuff up, and they make it extremely difficult to do business in a state with all those regulations. do you think there is maybe a

little bit of price gouging? i don't think a lot of people trust companies like this, either. >> there's absolutely not. the mathematics don't work on that. remember, you have to have a special blend of gasoline in california, completely separate from the rest of the country. that's the summer blend. but also, again, they have been imposing on a state level -- not even the biden administration come up on the state level -- they have been imposing new regulations on refining. labor regulations on top of the high taxes that these companies are already paying. they are also against the plane demand, good old business when it comes to the oil industry. with more demand, which we have had post covid, a state like california where driving is the name of the game, they don't have trains like we do here in the new york city area, so all of that pushes to the environments that they've got to operate in, with its valero or chevron or occidental or whomever. they can't afford -- they have to put these prices up on retail
