west continues getting more involved. kevin corke in washington with the latest. >> more saber rattling and threats from russian leaders, even as president biden continues his efforts to keep not just the u.s. but other global communities squarely behind ukraine's government even as it faces withering assault from the russians. russia is obviously taking notice of that and in turn that could help to fuel moscow's latest barrage on kyiv. leaders warned that there is "more to come. here is mr. madge of medvedev. with the "political regime" oppose a constant direct and clear threat to russia. the first episode has been played. there will be others." president biden hoping to convince other g7 countries to stand in the gap behind kyiv's

"he's not joking when he talks about the potential use on tactical nuclear weapons or biological chemical weapons because his military is, you might say, significantly underperforming. we have not faced the prospect of army getting since kennedy and the cuban missile crisis. mr. pruden meanwhile desperate and defiant is facing the wrath of his own countrymen.

>> he's got a serious problem in his own tent, we are drawing on war stocks to meet the needs of what the ukrainians want. bottom line is i do not think putin can be sure of convincing somebody downrange to push the button. >> todd: the president of the uae will head down the russia to meet with his counterpart. there are some experts, carly and todd, believe they can defuse tension sparked by the ukraine war. all i can say about that is we of course we'll see. >> todd: >> carley: certainly will. won't hold your breath between diffusing tensions. what we saw was images we were seeing during the start of the war and let speak we are, russia has always targeted civilians but yesterday there were missile

strikes, all the way in the west near poland but we saw a lot of refugees going at the start of the war because they thought that area was safe. and the ukrainian staff reported that russia forces launched 84 cruise missiles and 14 drone attacks, carried out by iranian made drones, ukrainian air defense shot down 43 cruise missiles, ten of those drones and three unspecified drones. despite the fact we are now getting reports of a dozen people dead, hundreds injured, it could have been much worse, about half of those missiles were intercepted. but this is one of the reasons why zelenskyy is saying the number one thing that ukraine needs right now from the united states and western allies are air defense systems. it's their number one priority. >> todd: why is this happening? obvious reason part one is the
1:05 am
attack on the crimean bridge, retaliation to that. we very military experts across the board say the reason this is all happening right now is because putin is losing the strategic traditional portion of this war. he thought he would go in and win willy-nilly. he's not doing that. one of the experts who said that was rebecca koffler. we had her on yesterday. here's what else she had to say. listen. >> it's an existential battle for him and he's going to do everything possible, he's going to switch to a different strategy coming forward to make sure that ukraine does not enter the western orbit of influence. he's going to target exactly what he's targeting now, the civilian infrastructure with cyberattacks. space warfare operations. underwater strikes. >> todd: it makes sense that the conventional phase and it
1:06 am
worked out for him and of course one thing that follows from what dr. koffler said is the fear of nuclear reprisal. >> carley: you get to what the president said last week and just casually mentioned that we could be heading towards nuclear armageddon and the fall out for that comment is absolutely warranted. you think about what ukrainian soldiers are under and what zelenskyy is under right now and they hear that comment coming from the president of the united states and it can completely demoralize them to a certain extent. they have fought this war so bravely that i do not think anything can really take that away from them. certainly is a comment that zelensky would not want to hear from the president especially because it also emboldens putin. what i am doing is scaring the west. let me push even further. it depends on who you ask whether what the president said is actually accurate or not,
1:07 am
general jack keane seems to think that putin is going through a cost-benefit analysis right now and the cost of deploying a tactical nuclear weapon on the battlefield would be way too costly for his country. the wind blows towards russia, so why would you do that? it would push nato even closer to this war but on the other hand you have putin in this trap right now where he is losing support for the war, over a million people have fled russia already because of this draft. everybody is trying to get out of the country because they are realizing that they are in this losing battle. unfortunately this is a war that putin is not going to lose. so the concern is how far he's willing to go. he may lose it, but he doesn't want to. that's why we are seeing these escalatory steps right now with him pulling these missiles across ukraine. >> todd: obviously this war has major geopolitical implications and also has major

economic implications. major stock indices nose diving across the board for the down near down 100 points, the s&p down by nearly 30 pay the nasdaq hitting its lowest level since july 2020. jpmorgan top exact sounding the recession alarm with this troubling timeline. >> you can talk about this economy in the future and this is serious stuff. these are very serious things, they are unlikely to push the u.s. in the world. u.s. is already recession. >> todd: it's one thing when your run-of-the-mill economist says it's another thing when jamie dimon says it. other economists warning that continuing hikes could go too far in their efforts to bring down after the bank's third consecutive hike. the third largest railroad union threatening to strike after reaching -- rejecting a deal with class one freight
