brand-new fox power rankings are out, republicans holding the advantage and retaking the house. the senate is still up in the air. hello, well come, -- welcome, i'm sandra smith in new york. >> mike: mike emanuel in washington. republicans are supposed to keep the advantage from the last power rankings but different side in the senate. toss-up races in arizona, georgia, nevada and pennsylvania will decide which party takes control. >> sandra: tight as ever, we approach the final weeks to election day, all of this as pocket book issues are likely to determine the outcome of many of these key races. recent polls show the economy, inflation, surging gas prices are top of mind for american voters. especially independents. >> mike: jackie and james in moments, but first alexandria,
10:02 am
the election is likely to be decided by independent voters. >> that is exactly right, often hold the decisionmaking power and we are seeing the area of independent concern aligning more with republicans. the latest poll shows 82% of americans rating inflation as the most important issue, followed by crime at 72%. these are gop-led issues along with jobs and immigration rising above the issue of abortion. this is spelling out trouble for democrat, when you 0 in on the independents and the same poll, 61% said economic issues were the most important. since the last forecast, republicans have, by the way, gained a point on the generic value question. so let's look at the house. 31 races still considered toss-ups. fox power rankings predict republicans will have 14 seats of breathing room. democrats, a small pathway of control at this point.
10:03 am
individual strength of candidates carries weight. ohio's ninth district hit with controversy, stems from the republican candidate making a claim about being a combat veteran. that race has moved from a toss-up to a lean d, opposite swap in rhode island second district. on the senate side, no shortage of personalities there. still anyone's game. our forecast has 47 races going democrat, 49 republican, so it does come down to those four toss-up races, arizona, georgia, nevada and pennsylvania. and if these candidates were looking to fine tune their messaging, it could be too late as several states have already started in their early voting, mike. >> mike: a lot was made of the first debate in pennsylvania is not until the 25th of the month. >> one of those states, the absentee ballots are coming in all right. >> sandra: let's bring in our

panelist, jackie deangelis and james freeman. from the wall street journal perspective, you look at key battle grounds and it's the economy, stupid, right? we go back to the pocketbook issues the american voter cares about the most. is it going to be that easy for republicans if they can transfer that message to voters? >> i don't think easy but i think what you are seeing in the public polling where the economy and inflation are the top issues, and voters give republicans the edge on those issues, i think it's clear that democrats are seeing the same thing in their private polling. you mentioned swing state senate race in arizona. mark kelly, the incumbent there, democrat, doing everything he can to separate himself from the president on the inflation issue. even though he voted for all the big spending, he is basically running a campaign saying i'm not with biden. so i think -- i think that tells you how powerful this issue is, and you are seeing this in other

races around the country. >> sandra: jamie diamond sat down earlier this week, and by the way, ceo of j.p. morgan who advised the obama administration on the economy. he's saying this administration, specifically on energy, is getting it all wrong and in doing so he calls out the climate change guys and gals saying you think high gas prices are the solution for green energy? it's just not the case. listen to this. >> i think we are getting energy completely wrong. it was pretty predictable that putin would cut off some gas and oil and oil prices would go up. and the climate folks here, it has made it worse. poor nations, india, china, indonesia, vietnam, turning back on coal plants as are rich nations called germany, netherlands, france. we have it completely backwards. >> sandra: to james' point about democrats that are on these tickets, they have to distance themselves from these policies
10:06 am
that are directly affecting americans' pocketbooks, fascinating from jamie diamond. >> he's very respected on wall street and used to advise the former president. what the democrats seem to do, construct a narrative that's not a good sense of reality, right. they keep putting their foot on the gas, if you will, to get to being all electric and don't realize the power grid electricity and the batteries in the cars can't handle the kind of, what they want to do so quickly. it takes time to get there. what we are seeing is americans are suffering as a result of gas prices going up and you are right, it's not just about us. even if we turned a switch and went green tomorrow, it's about the rest of the world. we can't solve the climate problem so they are falling back on traditional fossil fuel, coal, nuclear, different kinds of energy, they need it going into the winter. >> sandra: and bernie sanders in a new op-ed says democrats
10:07 am
should run on the economy and james carville made a similar point in an a.p. piece this morning, saying democrats should not focus only on abortion, that is a mistake says bernie sanders. now is the time for democrats to take the fight to the reactionary republican party and expose anti-worker views. what do republicans have to say about corporations charging americans outrageously high prices while enjoying record breaking profits. they talk a lot about inflation. does one of them have the courage to consider a windfall profits tax? absolutely not. is that going to work for his party? >> i think bernie has figured out like most people that the economy is the issue. what he's doing now, he's saying the answer is more spending, more taxes. that references, he's got a lot of attacks on business. if he wants to make the argument inflation is not washington phenomenon, greedy people in the food industry, a product that
10:08 am
has gone up in price. he understands they have to say something about the economy. >> sandra: and because people are living through here, the chart, the last two years of inflation and jackie, only gone up under this president. inflation continues to get worse and at that same time people are having a hard time paying their bills. we can put this up. lending tree, just released a survey on those americans that are falling behind on their credit card bills, or their bills in general. 32% have paid a bill late in the past six months. 40% are less able to afford their bills, compared to a year ago. that goes to the age-old question now, when you go to the ballot box, you ask yourself are you better off now than two years ago and what? >> i think they will answer no at this point and this is something the republicans and democrats can agree on, the statistics you just mentioned and how people are suffering right now. the approach is the issue. in the piece from bernie
10:09 am
sanders, he wants to raise the taxes on billionaires. according to forbes, 735 billionaires and 4.7 trillion in wealth. even if you raise their taxes you will not get us out of the spending hole we have created. they want the windfall profits tax, raise the federal minimum wage to $15, wages are up and that's contributing to inflation. >> sandra: but the real wage growth is actually down. >> real wages are -- >> sandra: not keeping pace with inflation, so actually negative. obviously huge part of the midterm elections that we are quickly approaching. mike. >> mike: the first debate between two senate candidates in ohio gets testy on stage. democratic congressman tim ryan facing off against j.d. vance in a race that could determine the balance of power in critical battleground ohio. the senate hopeful slamming on abortion and immigration and one of the most contentious debates of the general election season so far. >> if you get raped, j.d. vance
10:10 am
and others will say you have to have that baby, state mandated pregnancies for a rape victim, that is so far out of the mainstream it's not even funny. >> that poor girl was raped by an illegal alien. somebody that should have never been in this state in the first place. you voted so many times against border wall funding, so many times for amnesty, tim. if you had done your job she would never have been raped in the first place. >> sandra: also trading barbs on inflation, ryan putting the onous on both parties but his opponent, vance, laid the blame for high prices solely on the democrat's doorstep. >> do you think president biden is to blame for the inflation crisis? >> i think everybody is to blame. we are coming out of a pandemic, it's a problem. the question is, are we going to sit around another ten years and point fingers. >> borrowed and spent trillions of dollars we don't have and throwing fuel on the fire of the inflation problem and gone to
