c >> live from new york, that's "fox & friends" for today. >> making coffee on the coffee machine. >> you can't back out of gutfeld. you have to do the show. >> look, i can barely touch the floor. >> bill: good morning, everybody. we begin with the fight against inflation. this is not good. some revealing data out moments ago. what it says about the state of the economy with mid-terms a few weeks away. it will have an impact. i'm bill hemmer. >> dana: i'm dana perino. wholesale prices are up 8.5% from a year ago and up from last month despite a series of aggressive rate hikes by the
6:01 am
federal reserve. >> bill: that is only more bad news for americans trying to pay for gas and groceries. it comes after opec slashed oil production. the economy seen as the achilles heel for democrats in november. the president now admitting there may be more pain on the horizon to come. >> should the american people prepare for a recession? >> president biden: i don't think it will be a recession, if there is one a very slight one. >> aishah hosley live from the state department and we'll begin with edward lawrence on the north lawn of the white house. >> we hear the beep, beep, beep of messaging here at the white house. not the construction truck over there. the president a year ago was saying we won't have a recession. and then about three months ago the president ended the message out of the white house was a recession will not be likely. now we're hearing a recession is possible but still could be shallow. listen to the president.
6:02 am
>> you just said a slight recession is possible. >> president biden: it is possible. look, it is possible. i don't anticipate it. what i do think, look, we talk about the impact on families. the families have reason to be concerned about energy prices, they have reason to be concerned about a whole range of issues. >> but the international monetary fund director of research says the u.s. economy will stall next year. in a new report they say that inflation will cause a global recession. you can see what happened to inflation under this president. president biden. so i had this simple question, listen. >> so i'm wondering if the president bears any responsibility with his policies with a stalling economy. >> we have to step back and look at what the president walked into here. when you think about -- we've been here for 20 months. when he walked in small businesses were closing down. schools were not open.
6:03 am
why did this all happen is because of the global challenges that many countries, countries across the globe have been facing. >> it's a long answer for no. the president not saying he is taking any responsibility for his policies and there is no pivot from this white house on any of those policies, bill. >> bill: another rating we should see again tomorrow. leading our coverage from the white house. >> dana: president biden putting saudi arabia on notice. he says it's time for the u.s. to rethink its relationship with the desert kingdom following their plan to reduce oil output by 2 million barrels a day. >> good morning, dana. the administration admits that these talks about recalibrating the relationship with saudi arabia, that's not new. but talks about retaliating against the kingdom, those are new. although the president is staying tight lipped how he is planning to do that.
6:04 am
>> president biden: when house and senate get back there will be consequences for what they've done with russia. i won't get into what i consider and have in mind but there will be consequences. >> so he won't talk about the consequences but democrats on the hill, they are happy to talk about the kinds of punishment they want to see. senate foreign relation chairman wants to block all future u.s. weapons sales to saudi arabia. meanwhile, support on the hill is building for that bill that would allow the u.s. to sue opec plus member countries in federal court and some members want to go as far as pull u.s. troops and equipment out of saudi arabia and the uae. that's a relationship-destroying move. some say the administration really needs to look in the mirror here and recalibrate its own policies. gas prices as we know were
6:05 am
already rising before the war in ukraine. they've been rising again right before the mid-terms here. they are up $0.20 in the last month to $3.92 a gallon or regular and the "wall street journal" reports the administration pleaded with the saudis to delay the oil cuts by another month, which the saudis viewed, of course, as a political ploy right before the mid-terms. republicans, oil industry experts lobbying to unleash american energy. >> frankly the administration is out of options at this point. the last place they can turn to is the u.s. producers. we're more than willing to reengage with them on the policy and regulatory issues. >> so far no timeline offered by this administration as to when we might see some action against our gulf ally. dana. >> dana: aishah hosni, thank you. >> bill: tom cotton with us now. senator, welcome back. good morning to you.
6:06 am
that last thing aishah was reporting about the "wall street journal" asking to delay the decision for another month, the answer a resounding no. did you know about this before? >> i didn't know about it but i can believe it. the democrats will do anything to try to keep gas from increasing before the election. remember, he didn't ask the saudis not to cut production. he only asked them to wait for a month until after the election because the official stated policy of joe biden on the campaign trail since he has been in office to do everything he can to hurt fossil fuel production here and around the world, which is driving up energy prices. there are two simple reasons for what has happened with this opec decision and our relationship with saudi arabia and dependency on foreign oil again. one, joe biden has waged a war on american oil production. if we would produce more here we wouldn't have to depend on anyone overseas. two, joe biden and barack obama and the democratic party have
6:07 am
waged a campaign to ostracize and alienate saudi arabia going back 13 years by codling iran and appeasing our mortal enemy. ronald reagan in the 1980s was able to enlist saudi arabia to keep oil prices low, which devastated soviet russia's economy. why can't joe biden do that with the saudis to putin's russia? it's because they've waged this campaign against our long-time friend saudi arabia in favor of our long-time adversary iran. that's exactly the kind of short-sighted foreign policy that i explain in "only the strong." >> dana: i've been reading your book. thank you for letting me get an early copy. interesting how history played out. when you look back at some of the decisions that this administration made on the first day regarding energy and keystone pipeline in particular i am reminded of the group of energy workers we talked to. many of them were from arkansas
6:08 am
and they used to be able to go and travel. they might work for six months on a project and come back. all those jobs dried up. i have to imagine a lot of energy workers are just bewildered and demoralized today thinking how could it be the answer to this is to punish the saudis regardless of the merits of that, but not open up american oil for production and distribution here? what are you hearing from the people, the workers who would actually do this kind of thing for us. >> that's exactly right, dana. we had a lot of workers in arkansas affected by joe biden's day one decision to shut down the keystone pipeline and several other actions designed to hamstring american oil and gas production. they lost their jobs, now they are paying $4 a gallon for gas, electricity and heating bills will go up this winter because of joe biden's energy policies. yet he is going hat in hand to
6:09 am
dictatorships like venezuela pleading with them to produce more oil at the same time he is alienateing long-time partners in places like saudi arabia and the united arab emirates by continuing to coddle and appease iran. what is the latest temper tantrum by the democrats going to do? simply encourages the iranians to shoot more missiles via their proxies at saudi arabia's and emotion rather oil facilities and attack tankers and shipping lines by suggesting that joe biden will simply stand on the sidelines if our partners in the middle east are attacked by iran and its proxies. it is not only dangerous but very bad for american families' budgets. >> bill: thank you for your time. good luck with the book "only the strong." america gets a vote in this argument coming up soon. prime time last night on cnn the president sat -- i think his first one-on-one interview with
6:10 am
cnn since he took office, first one with a lot of folks, right? the question about his son came up and this is a little bit about how that played out. >> president biden: i'm proud of my son. this is a kid who got -- not a kid, a grown man. he got hooked on -- like many families, hooked on drugs. he has overcome that and established a new life. i'm confident that he is what he says and does are consistent with what happens. >> dana: so he has said that before and i think that one of the things that most people in america can agree on, that's the words of a loving father who is worried about his son, who was obviously in a very bad way and done some terrible things. what it didn't do is answer a couple of questions. did he do something wrong? if he did something wrong, should he have to pay the price for that? and also what about these questions in regards to payments for the big guy?
6:11 am
where was that? >> bill: you have the question about taxes and the question about the gun purchase when he was apparently on drugs. and you can't do that. that's a no no. it was a bit of an exchange last night. we'll play for on some different topics later in the program. meanwhile breaking news. >> dana: america's crime wave and the danger to law enforcement. three swat officers were shot in philadelphia serving a murder warrant. they are in stable condition. another person was also shot during the incident. details are still coming in. we'll bring you more information as we have it. that's happening in philly right now. >> we did find that in small talk before the interview without captioning it seemed it was difficult forfeiterman to understand our conversation. myself, our producer and crew did find that small talk before that captioning was difficult. >> bill: there is a lot on the line here.
6:12 am
nbc news reporter talking about the struggle she observed from the democratic senate candidate john fetterman in his first in-person interview since his stroke. will it change the pennsylvania senate race? we'll tell you what we believe we know about his condition today. >> dana: president biden says republicans have nothing to run on. voters beg to differ. the mid-terms enter the homestretch. >> bill: this is being called a smoking gun in the so-called whipping controversy. did the white house and d.h.s. knowingly fail to stop a bogus story at the border? we'll investigate. oblem. but as a veteran, you already have a solution. it's your powerful va home loan benefit. it lets you borrow up to a full 100% of your home's value, not just 80%. with home values near record highs, that could mean a lot more cash than you imagined. and at newday,

6:23 am
this point has a heavy emphasize on the economy, immigration and crime in large part out of reaction to what joe biden and the democrats have done. >> bill: the easy answer on that however was two weeks ago house republicans came out with a four-point plan on what they call their commitment to america and mirrors what knut gingrich did 28 years ago. that follow up didn't happen. bernie sanders says abortion is a fine argument but you need to take on republicans on the economy. just give this a listen. >> what the supreme court did is totally outrageous but what we have got to do is take the attack to republicans on the economy. all that i'm saying is when the american people in poll after poll think that the economy, think that inflation are the two major issues, you cannot ignore those issues. >> bill: what i would ask the president is what's the democratic plan to address the economic woes of today?

>> what we've seen it, bill. we've seen the democratic plan and things are worse. bernie sanders is right. you can't have the fifth month of trying to sell abortion as the only issue that americans should care about and expect some results with it. bernie sanders lost the presidentall primary but won the policy war. joe biden implemented the bernie sanders economic plan to try to address the economy post covid and things are much worse, right? gas prices, inflation, every metric things are much worse. so it is not that they don't have a plan. it's that we've seen it and it is awful, right? so i think most americans are reacting to that and then contrasting it with the economy under republican leadership which is a much different place than we find ourselves now. >> dana: the cash on hand or the house side for democrats versus republicans, look at the republicans are just way above
