we are learning new details about the tragedy in connecticut. two officers were killed in the third critically wounded and what police believe was an ambush following a phone 891 call for help. critics say anti- police rhetoric is only making things more dangerous for the men and women in blue who risk their lives daily to keep us safe. correct alexis mcadams is live in new york city which much more on this tragedy. what a shocking thing to happen in connecticut. >> how many people in that committee are grieving the loss of the families who have to say goodbye to their loved ones but across the country though crime against police is up. and up a lot for the national fraternal order of police funding at all on failed policies and anti- police rhetoric. this comes as crime is more the top priorities for voters right now. just a sense of monday at least 12 police officers have been shot. four of them killed. you can see right there on the map the shootings happened in half a dozen states in the past week there but this comes as a community in bristol, connecticut is grieving the loss

respect from the public and from politicians back to the police. what's happening out there is criminals are not afraid of police. they are not afraid of the consequences and shooting police. they get out on bail with no bail. district attorneys are under charging assaults on police. the whole rhetoric of the phone the police, no bail laws, black lives matter, riots around the country is really a total disrespect for law enforcement. one of the things i always said when i was police commissioner the only people i want to be afraid of police are criminals and they were. we made new york the safest city in america. that is no longer the case. >> what is the responsibility of police departments or turn this around? and how can community leaders help? >> police department ski pep to train their people and how to

respond to what are basically blind to situations. and politicians need to say that we are going to support the police. one of the issues this driven me slightly crazy over the last number of years as district attorneys when there is a shooting the first thing they talk about is prosecuting the police officer. and that is why police are resigning and numbers never before seen. and are retiring in huge numbers. the sauna paper that it police department's are offering 10,000 dollars for something to become a police officer. that is not what you want police officers for about police officers who want to serve not police officers who won 10,000 dollar bonus. the world is upside down that's primary because of lack of leftist politicians. >> how do you fix the distrust between certain communities and police departments? >> you fix it by both going into the community and explaining what we do and why we doing.
11:06 am
also i did 76 town halls and i was police commissioner. i really heard about police brutality or police violence. when i heard is in minority communities are being victimized by other minorities. they want more police officers not less. but when you look around the country the good citizens who are working and tinker their families don't want police they want more police. arthel: into a clear we are certainly not saying crime only happens in black neighborhoods. certainly crimes are not only committed by people from those very communities. just to be clear neither of us is saying that. let me play some sound from congressman cleaver from missouri he was on fox business tonight, last night let's take a listen. >> i have three kids, three sons tell them all the time assume everybody has a gun. do everything you can to try to discourage people from getting

angry. i think right now people carry guns everywhere. if i'm just easy access to guns, locate the problem? often time criminals are more powerful guns and police do. >> i don't believe it does. in fact we are doing is we are regular ownership of guns for citizens. criminals do not care about the regulations are. we should encourage citizens to be trained and to lawfully carry weapons so that they are at least equal to the people are going to assault them. i'm sorry but a gift to clear something up. the majority of crime does happen in minority areas. the victims are minorities. and that is why when people say or do you send so many police in minority areas that's where the majority of crime happens. and that is a fact but it's not pleasant but it is a reality. >> is simply saying we weren't saying it's only there. that is what i was saying commissioner. >> absolutely not only there.
11:08 am
you look at major cities, the majority of victims of crime are minorities. >> let me follow up on something you said you were in favor of training people lawful people who get guns and to know how to use them, haven't registered paid but that's not the people i'm talking about. period people who are genuinely speaking are law abiding citizens are to the steps to get a gun legally. i am time by these criminals who get these ghost guns and all of the guns like that is, that are not registered. they are the ones who again i do not have statistics i'm talking about we are talking about generally speaking here. are going to be the ones who are perhaps calling 911 making fake call to 911 to ambush officers and the like. you see my point here? it is delicate. >> i do see your point. but the fact is there's 350 guns in almost 99.9% of all guns that

are using crime or originally bought legally only sate legally from legal gun dealers. so many of them were bought through purchasers of criminal higher people without criminal records to go get their weapons. we do not have a real database in this country relative to straw purchase. relative to people with mental illness. social media can come up with an algorithm that blocks if you say something about leftist politicians. why can't they come up with an algorithm that catalogs people with mental illness so we know about them before they commit mass shootings? arthel: commissioner thank you for bringing your history, your expertise to this conversation. and the fact that you have at your disposal pray thank you very much commissioner will talk to again soon, take care break works good to be with you. arthel: violent crime also
