>> john: begin "america reports" this thursday afternoon with 19 days to go now until the midterms. president biden out on the campaign trail today as the pennsylvania senate race comes down to the wire. hello, i'm john roberts in washington. >> sandra: 19 days out, hard to believe. here we go. sandra smith in new york. the president travelling today for his only campaign stop of the week. he'll talk infrastructure before heading to philadelphia to stump for john fetterman. >> john: happening as polls show republican dr. oz closing the gap against john fetterman, and republicans also gaining ground in contests thought to be democratic strongholds. >> sandra: our panel standing by. mollie line is standing by in deep blue rhode island. so first to bryan llenas on the

ground in philadelphia, expecting to see the president a short time from now. hi, bryan. >> hi, sandra. $167 million have been spent in the pennsylvania senate race. it's the second most expensive race in the nation behind georgia's campaign down there. but ultimately that does not seem to be enough. the president is in pennsylvania in part to fund raise with john fetterman here in philadelphia tonight. he's about to speak in pittsburgh in about an hour. so far john fetterman has raced $48 million, the oz campaign raised 34 million, but 21 million of that is dr. oz's own personal money. there is a final push for money here in what is a toss-up race. a new aarp poll finds fetterman's lead has dwindled to just two points over mehmet oz, it was six points in june. number one issue, inflation and

that's how we have dropped the carbon footprint the last 15 years. >> as for fetterman's stroke recovery, his doctor released a letter yesterday saying he can work without restrictions and doing well, but of note the doctor did donate to his campaign. >> john: bryan, thank you so much. we'll be watching for the president later today. >> surprising house race is developing in rhode island. power rankings list it as a toss-up. so we are watching the race, it is so close and is considered a toss-up at this point. but going into deep blue rhode island, you are looking at house district 2, kent and washington counties, some of providence county, and it has not been represented by a republican in more than 30 years at this point. you have to go back to 1991. there was a debate held there on monday but now everybody is watching, the republican is leading in the polls in this

district. i'll pop him on the screen so you know who he is. former mayor of the city of cranston, this is alan fung, son of a first generation of immigrants, focusing on energy in the state, a big focus on inflation and why he is gaining in the polls there. seth magaziner would not support a tax increase on anyone making $400,000 a year, and touting the inflation reduction act, rhode island second district, a toss-up, we'll be watching that for quite some time. the latest from the campaign trail, mollie is in warwick, and the headline, the gop candidate is surging in the polls there, right, mollie? >> yes, sandra, you did a tremendous job setting up what is hang here, and why it's so
10:06 am
unusual the race is so competitive. allan fung, chinese american, former mayor of cranston, the first asian-american mayor-elected in the state and very strong competitor against seth magaziner, and touting the city he led 12 years, and also a pragmatic moderate. >> missing new england republican in the house where we don't have a single republican up there right now, i want to be part of the contingent, a voice not just rhode island but all of new england across the aisle missing a while now. >> magaziner is pro choice, and he aimed to tie fung to conservative party leadership in

outlier. >> john: when has a "new york times" been considered an outlier? >> i look at the actual vote numbers. 5 million americans. just about 5 million americans have already voted and democrats have seen increase in about 2%, republicans are down over their early vote numbers from 2018. that shows real enthusiasm. georgia is blowing the numbers out in the peach state. good thing for the democrats. >> you admitted "new york times" is fake news, that makes me just joyful. >> john: what about all the voter suppression in georgia? >> certainly they are overcoming that, spent the last two years to get the people the proper documentation and turn out. >> john: the outlier poll from the "new york times," an incredible swing among independent women voters. in september, women voters who

were independent favored the democrats by 14 points, and now the gop by 18. >> i think the democrats made the decision to invest on focusing on abortion, and really abortion alone, even president biden had a recent event where it was all about the fact of codifying roe v. wade. and they forget the suburban women who are pro life or saying it's about the economy, it's about school choice, it's about these cultural issues of i don't want my kids to be indoctrinated or, you know, on gender confusion issues or the drag queen scenarios we keep seeing. so i think for the democrats, they overplayed their hand on abortion. i think you look at again the swing districts and their focus is on what's happening in terms of crime, in terms of the economy, in terms of immigration. republicans obviously are in a much stronger position on those

topics. >> john: independent women were trending toward democrats at the end of the summer, democrats were saying independent women will decide the election. are you in trouble? >> talking about the economy as the number one issue, you saw the president talking about bringing down gas prices yesterday from the white house, releasing more from our reserves to tackle those rising gas prices, and seen the prices tick down. >> good to see you wearing purple today. >> sandra: just happened. >> john: what just happened? >> sandra: sorry about that. liz mcdonald coming up. conversation on set. meanwhile, a lot of parents are worried about this as we head towards halloween. a passenger was caught trying to sneak thousands of fentanyl pills through airport security and the way he tried to do it has law enforcement issuing a warning to parents, obviously just ahead of halloween. >> john: president biden doubling down on accusations

contain fentanyl packaged in candy boxes, whoppers, skittles, sweet tarts, a passenger tried to take them through a tsa checkpoint at los angeles international airport. the passenger somehow managed to get away, but officials say the person has been identified and the investigation is ongoing. and in the wake of the seizure, the sheriff's department warned parents to be alert to the threat of fentanyl saying in a statement "with halloween approaching, parents need to make sure they are checking their kids' candy and not allowing them to eat anything until it has been inspected by them." the dea, by the way, points out about 42% of illicit pills contain more than the potentially lethal dose of two milligrams of fentanyl. so those pills seized at lax could kill around 5,000 people.
10:20 am
according to the cdc, more than 107,000 americans died of drug overdoses and poisonings in 2021, 66% of those deaths related to synthetic opioids like fentanyl. and john, the dea now says, "fentanyl is the single deadliest drug threat our nation has ever encountered." extraordinary when you think of the cocaine epidemics of the 1980s and 1990s, fentanyl more dangerous than that, according to the dea, john. >> john: you know, you can see that they would say that, jonathan, when you consider almost every seizure of fentanyl contains enough of the drug to kill everybody in this country, or most people. jonathan hunt for us in l.a. thank you. sandra, this is a scourge ahead of thanksgiving -- ahead of halloween, just a little more than a week away.

that would qualify. >> sandra: we should start that. president biden is in pennsylvania to stump for john fetterman. he was greeted by john fetterman wearing a suit and tie, we are turning that picture for you. but it is his only campaign stop this week as biden appears to be limiting his time spent on the trail. his former boss, barack obama, is keeping a busier schedule. 19 days to go for election day. bill, first up, i'm so happy to see you. welcome back. >> thank you. >> sandra: first off, characterize this particular race for us, i can show live pictures right now, president biden is there, but this is his only campaign stop of the entire week. he's on the ground there in pittsburgh. he just greeted john fetterman, he's going to be campaigning for him, but characterize this moment for democrats and for the

democrat, particularly, in pennsylvania running for senate. >> well, the president always touts his scranton routes, so he's hoping that it can persuade people to pull the lever for fetterman. remember, it's a close race, within the margin of error, but fetterman has a slight lead in all the polls. again, in the margin of error. so there's not many places that president biden can go to where he would be help, you know, neighboring ohio, tim ryan does not want him there, even though tim ryan is basically running as joe biden, a guy that says i'm a moderate but i embrace the democratic left wing agenda in congress. >> sandra: so we are keeping track of the campaign travel and certainly the comparisons are something, we can put it up on the screen. one state for the current president, three states for his predecessor, donald trump, three

states barack obama travelling to four states, so brings up a very important question in this moment. the president was asked this this morning as he was leaving the white house as well. are democrats distancing themselves from the current president? >> yeah, of course they are. now look, joe biden is not the first president to have this problem in midterms. midterms are always referendum on presidents and a lot of candidates would rather their president stay home. tim ryan has said as much in ohio. but i think mr. biden is particularly toxic because he has nothing to say on inflation, on all the issues that people care about in these tight races. i think he would turn off more voters than turn on. >> sandra: very interesting. as far as what we are hearing directly from the president, i mentioned he was asked about

this this morning, and he snapped back at the reporter for even asking, listen. >> john fetterman is going to appear with you today in pennsylvania but there have not been that many candidates campaigning with you. >> that's not true, 15. count. >> even more? >> yeah. >> sandra: i guess he did not like the question but did say there are going to be more. maybe there will be. >> yeah, this is classic joe biden. he doesn't acknowledge reality and when someone brings up unpleasant reality to him, it's, you know, he denies it, and snaps at them. and so it goes back to the fall of afghanistan when he's asked about people, you know, trying to cling on to the wheel wells of departing planes and he's like come on, man, that was a few days ago. you know, he's telling us inflation is gonna be -- gonna be solved. and he just has no answers. >> sandra: solved with more spending, even more of a head
