still pursuing a nuclear still. >> sandra: kick off "america reports" with democrats staying on message in the final midterm stretch potentially at a cost. focused on abortion, but turns out there's a lot more on the mind of voters. and polls show those issues do little to help democrats. sandra smith in new york, and jackie, great to have you here today. >> great to be here, i'm jacqui heinrich in washington. john roberts is off today. president biden talking about restrictions to fire up the base, but not as receptive to the message as supreme court had just overturned roe v. wade. >> sandra: a new monmouth poll shows inflation topping the list of concerns at 46%. abortion below voting, crime, immigration, and jobs. edward lawrence is live at the white house to kick things off. inflation, i should say, top of

that list. abortion falls significantly below other issues, so edward, many are asking why do democrats focus on the other issues? >> that's a good question, 90 minutes ago the president spent most of his speech attacking republicans. yesterday the president talked about the bipartisan infrastructure bill and on sunday he's going to be on live now in a presidential forum and he will say that abortion, that you should be able to use federal money to use services around having an abortion, like going to have childcare. now, there's no real focus here yet on inflation. so fox news polling shows again, when you were saying, inflation is by far the number one issue for registered voters. abortion is sixth on the list, just so many topics here we could not fit political division on the board. still we heard from the president how he's in charge of a great economy.

>> we are going from historically strong economic recovery to a steady and stable growth while reducing the deficit. building an economy where everyone does well, where the poor have a ladder up, the middle class as well, and the wealthy do very well, they are not hurt by it. >> so the committee for responsible federal budget says this, the entirety of the decline in deficit between 2021 and 2022 can be attributed to the expiration of temporary covid relief, not due to renewed era of fiscal responsibility. now, voters actually care about inflation, we have been talking about, and in a question and answer with federal reserve president from minneapolis, he says that we are not in a good place. >> it's possible headline inflation has peaked but i have not seen evidence to give me comfort the core inflation and the services inflation, the stickier parts of inflation less volatile, i've not seen much evidence that has yet peaked,

competitive. it was not meant to be, but it's turning out that way. the incumbent democrat may have a bit of an edge here but the republican candidate making this a very, very close contest. congresswoman johanna hayes, the first black woman to serve in the u.s. house from connecticut when she won in 2019, but gop nominee, george logan, black man, son of guatemalan immigrants. hayes, a former educator, teacher of the year in 2018 is welcoming big names like vice president kamala harris who came here to discuss reproductive healthcare. logan is running as a moderate. pragmatic new england republicans, could be a return to congress. >> more diversity in any organization makes the organization stronger and the republican party here in connecticut and at the national level is doing that. we are welcoming. >> the chair of the national republican congressional committee believes a political

realignment is underway. >> record number of black candidates, record number of hispanic candidates, record number of women. i would argue that every minority group in america that is traditionally voted democrat is available to republican candidates. >> but a spokesman for the democratic congressional campaign committee slammed republicans for finally engaging with communities of color in 2022 with flawed candidates, writing the politics of promoting hate remains. even if many of the gop minority candidates achieve victory, democrats will still outnumber them on this account. but republican party leaders are proud of this class of candidates that they are putting forward that they believe reflects the diversity of america. >> jacqui: interesting to see which races surprise you. thank you so much. >> sandra: karl rove, former white house deputy chief of staff and fox news contributor.

here we go, 18 days out to election day, and many are observing that very diverse group of gop candidates and wondering if this will result in a more diverse group of gop voters. i know you've got a whiteboard in hand. what can you tell us? >> first of all, the republicans are doing a better job of diversity. think about the candidates for the u.s. house. 32 latinos, including in texas, three latinas in south texas, garcia, flores and de la cruz, and could pick up districts, one in a special election with congresswoman flores. 11 asian-americans, you'll have one of them on in the next half hour, i understand, and full disclosure i contributed to allan, he's a friend of mine. two native americans, 20% of the republican candidates are women. now, this is a good start but it is only a start. i think republicans are going to

find as a result of this election that we are winning in places we have not historically done by embracing diversity and hopefully that will encourage more diverse group of candidates in 2024. >> sandra: and of course you are talking about allan fung in rhode island. 30 years since republicans led in that state. so thank you for that. we'll have him on in about 15 minutes so the viewers can hear from him themselves. as far as the monmouth poll that, is something, karl. chief concerns of the american voter, and of course it's been inflation for quite some time, and ask yourself have democrat candidates done a good job focusing on that, you decide. you have inflation up there and abortion much farther down the list yet democrats are staying on message as this is their top priority to voters. >> oh, yeah, that's exactly what they are doing and it's

mistyfying to me. gallup asked a good question, which party will do a better job of handling the problem you think is most important. so the respondent in the poll gets to decide what the -- what is the most important issue. 48% say the republican party do a better job of dealing with the most important issue i'm thinking of, and 37% say democrat. that is the biggest margin for the republicans since 1946. this question began to be asked in the 1940s. huge advantage for republicans. gallup then asked a separate question, what do you think are the most important issues and abortion was the most important issue for 4% of the electorate. you had the economy, you had jobs, you had inflation, you had crime, you had immigration, all of which were more important. in fact, in the gallup poll, in the immediate aftermath of the dobbs decision, this number was 8% which is midling. but 4% is not big, and that's what they are making the issue

about, and when they do talk about the economy, at least when the president talks about it, it's to say things that are not in, that don't connect with it, the felt experience of ordinary people. when he said last saturday in portland that we have an economy that's strong as hell, that's not what the american people think. 27% think the country is going in the right direction, nearly three-quarters think the wrong direction. over half the people believe their personal financial circumstances are poor compared to a year ago, and so when the president goes out there and talks about this, you know, we've got to -- you ransom footage of them. reducing the deficit. $5 trillion added to the deficit above the baseline of the federal budget by this president, we are now at $31 trillion, a record, and more piled on in the first year and a half the biden administration than in any president in history. >> sandra: and recent messaging from the president is look at

your gas prices how much they have come down from record highs and still up double digits since he took office. finish off with this. i know you also have a whiteboard on this. but many american voters, 18 days from election day, are going to find themselves asking themselves who is not just the best candidate, but best party for my financial security and my personal safety. and where do you think voters will fall, karl? >> you mentioned the monmouth poll earlier. showed six point advantage by republicans and that's echoed by other recent polls. republicans do well if they have parity off the issue, but the monmouth poll was a little bit of a wake-up call to democrats, it showed a six point advantage for republicans. results of the election, nevada, joe biden won by 2.4% what if there is a six point swing.

>> sandra: sentencing day for steve bannon, getting four months in prison following his conviction of contempt of congress. charges came after he defied a subpoena from the january 6th committee, you'll remember. bannon said he was following his lawyer's advice not to cooperate. the judge allowing bannon to remain free while he appeals that decision. >> jacqui: the biden administration is reportedly considering a plan to produce weapons in tandem with taiwan as tensions with china have been rising. that is happening when officials are concerned xi jing ping moving up the timeline.

>> happy to join you. >> jacqui: thank you, senator. the program would require licenses and approvals from the state department to produce critical technology for a foreign platform. it could mean sending technology to taiwan to have them produce it there, or producing it at home with the taiwanese parts. what are your feelings on a program like that? >> first of all, we have to realize that research security is an imperative and next we have to recognize that whether it is five days or weeks or months or years before china tries to go into taiwan, that it is imperative that we make certain that they have what they need for an asymmetrical battle capability so that they can defend themselves. i have had legislation taiwan defense land lease act.

this is something that needs to be moved forward as we finish the national defense authorization act. we need to move forward to be certain that our foreign military sales and training are in place to make certain taiwan has what they need. in addition, we should recognize the sovereignty and independence of taiwan. taiwan and the u.s. have had a very long and productive relationship. >> sandra: senator, good to have you on here, sandra here. michael waltz joined us on the program yesterday and he had a really, really strong warning on what may be happening here and what may come next. listen. >> if he takes taiwan, he'll control about 50% of global gdp. he will be able to control the trade and the shipping into japan, south korea, malaysia, indonesia, all of east asia, and

about 90% of the world's computer chips. this is in our interest to stop this from happening. >> sandra: a pretty stark warning there. do you agree with that? >> i do agree with what he is saying. when you look at taiwan and the computer chip, the microprocessor production that is done there, they are primary to the u.s. for appliances, for automobiles, for other pieces of equipment. taiwan is a trusted partner. now, as i was recently in taiwan and over in the indopacific, i heard repeatedly whether taiwan or other nations, they are very worried about china's aggressiveness. they are very worried about the perception that joe biden is weak. they see this as something that has emboldened xi jinping. they are concerned that as there are surveys and interviews of

other world leaders and they note the weakness militarily from the white house and their responsiveness on military issues that what you are going to do is allow china to push out the u.s., japan, australia, new zealand as the traditional and preferred trading partners of these countries and these countries feel that then they would be subserviant. >> and the thinking is xi jinping is watching what's happening with russia and the war in ukraine. john kirby warned this week we are seeing evidence that iran is not just supplying drones, but they have boots on the ground in crimea helping russia to fight this war, including members of the irgc, the u.s. recognizes as

a terror group and yet the u.s. is still trying to pursue a nuclear deal with iran. although kirby did say, diplomacy is looking shaky, should be still be trying? >> it is ridiculous. and it is dangerous and it is frustrating to see the white house insist that they can go back into iran nuclear deal, and jacqui, it was a year ago that i sent a letter over to the white house warning that putin was getting ready to go into ukraine. he was amassing troops. you could see he was telegraphing what he was looking to do. he has now seen it was not a three-day event, which he predicted, it is now coming up on many months and close to a year. but here is the thing. russia had to call in

the dons, often without success, now a new weapon to take them out without firing a single shot. jennifer griffin has the details from the pentagon. how is ukraine preparing to deal with these drone attacks? >> well, sandra, there is growing frustration in kyiv and here at the pentagon that there is no simple solution to stop the swarms of iranian-made drones launched by russia with tehran's help as you just outlined. they are terrorizing ukraine civilians. police have resorted to firing their rifles at the incoming kamikaze drones because anti-missile defense system which exist in israel and technologies here in the u.s. have not yet been sent to kyiv. >> we continue to see iran be complicit in terms of exporting terror, now also to ukraine. >> we maintain policy of supporting ukraine aids.

and leading up to now 18 days from election day, this was lean democrat, according to the power rankings, back to late august. as recent as late august, still lean democrat last september and early october things started to change. allan fung started gaining ground in the district, it became a toss-up, and where it is today october 18th. just to give you an idea of where this particular district is in rhode island, looking at these two candidates, and by the way, we'll have allan on in just a moment, the other candidate, seth magaziner we have invited on as well. here is house district 2, and just to give you the significance of this being a toss-up race, 18 days from election day. the counties, part of providence county falls in this district to show you historically just how blue things are. this was the 2020 presidential election results, joe biden won

61% of the vote there. washington county also falls in this district. biden won 58.9% of the votes, donald trump 39.4 and kent county, how solidly blue this area is, and allan fung has turned it into a toss-up race. >> thanks sandra for having me on. in 18 days turn the seat red, excited for that happening. >> how have you been able to shrink the margins in this race? how have you made it so close in such a historically blue state? >> well, two things. you know, people know about my record where i was mayor of our state's second largest city, turning a city in financial crisis in the race and short 12 years i was there, turning it into one of the best cities to live in america. doing it in a bipartisan manner, compromise, working across the aisle, doing the right thing for people. that's the attitude i will take

national abortion ban into play in the house of representatives. >> sandra: can you be very specific to voters where you stand on this issue? >> sure. my opponent is outright lying on this. and he's lying because he's losing in every single poll, every single public poll that's out there. i've been clear, i've said it on multiple interviews i will not support a national abortion ban nor criminalize it. i'm more in the middle of the road and he's trying to mislead. he does not have a plan on the economy. not what people's priorities are, driving down the cost, and reining in spending from the out of control and nancy pelosi. i'm talking about the important issues to make sure people have a quality of life. when we are facing coming into the winter, heating cost that are through the roof. we are relying on home heating oil. in the for the two years the

president has been in office, in rhode island alone, the cost has risen by 97%. also staring down the pike of 47% electricity increases. this is a cries and this is why they need my plans in place down in washington, d.c., working to tackle these issues. >> sandra: that has been a big part of your messaging, it must be working as you are now in what is a toss-up race there. folks do care about their energy prices, they care about what's happening with the economy. final question to you, the democrats in this race continue to try to paint you and associate you with maga, paint you in this extremist candidate. what do you say back to that, and what kinds of -- what kind of republican would you say that you are? >> well first and foremost, i think my opponents missed the memo that came out from nancy pelosi's number two, stenny hoyer who said i'm not an extremist, i'm a popular mayor.

they all know i'm a nice guy, work across the aisle for rhode islanders and doing what's right for them. i don't fit their national playbook or their mold because i am who i am, i've done it as mayor of cranston 12 years and they know and trust i will do the right thing in washington, d.c. >> sandra: you are a familiar face and name to a lot of people there, that's working in your favorite. and the democratic state committee man, a former providence mayor called you a nice man in a recent interview and you also quoted stenny hoyer telling reporters that you are a "quality opponent" and "not an extremist." what an interesting race to watch. you think you can win? >> i know we are going to win, we are out there every single day, whether it's at the doors, fairs, festivals, talking to our

take a look at the numbers from the georgia secretary of state, despite record turnout so far, no signs of any long lines or delays. ever since the 2020 election, georgia has reshaped the voting laws, among the new measures, a ban on food and drinks handed out at the polls, proof of i.d. to vote by mail and ballot drop boxes throughout the state. stacey abrams has criticized the measures, labelled them as racist, or you said jim crow 2.0. now facing an avalanche of questions about how the state is suppressing votes if there is already record turnout. >> the issue i take is we shouldn't have to work this hard to cast a ballot. shouldn't have to work this hard to navigate the system that is designed for your use. and under brian kemp and brad, they intentionally made it more difficult to cast your ballot. >> the latest polls show abrams trailing incumbent kemp but only
