1:11 pm
especially this close to midterms? >> there's reporting lately about how republicans are pulling ahead of the late stages. it's quite simple, it's because more people are paying attention and republicans have the advantage when it comes to the top issues voters care about in the freshest pulling so those issues are the economy, crime and immigration. some of the issues where democrats are dominant like abortion have faded away, inflation, the economy, jobs, these are things if anything, growing even more salient and that advantages republicans. arthel: you think democrats are planning to bring abortion back to the forefront since we are months away from key decisions, initial decisions? if they plan to are they communicating their messages? that always seems to be their problem.
1:12 pm
>> yes. i think it's a good strategy for democrats, they should talk about abortion as much as i can because the majority of the country is with them on the issue. however, not a lot of opportunity to do this. it's campaign rally, maybe campaign add, first lady jill biden talking about her friends, personal experience with abortion. those messages when voters hear them can be effective but very few opportunity for them to hear them where people go to the grocery store every day and see prices so they are reminded of that constantly. arthel: 16 days and several hours until election day. can either party the right? who's counting? can either party coast at this time? is it just going to be a strong sprint until the finish line? >> either party can coast. something i worry about what you see probabilistic poles, races about 45 out of 100 chance for

instance that either republicans or democrats will take the senate. it changes a little bit day today but that's dangerous for whichever party is slightly ahead in the projections because people to understand probability very well and they might say for the party ahead why am i going to stand on a big line? it looks like my party is doing pretty well, maybe they don't need my help so in this type of a race where you said it truly is tossup, either party once there people staying home so we should stick straight pulling and maybe not focus so much on these probabilities. arthel: you are saying maybe early voting versus election day voting whether is good news for either party or any particular candidate may not be a good move at this time. >> i just mean the new york

times 538 sort of projections about probability of a certain party winning the house or the senate. those are tough to understand where is straight up pulling but doesn't mention the chance of a party winning but talks about how voters respond to surveys is a little more straightforward and easy for people to understand. early voting i don't think is that informative because there's just as much energy on the republican side, republicans tend to vote in person, democrats banking ton of votes and vote by mail but there tends to be a lot of energy with the party out of power in the white house so that will change and we don't know until election day of the in person votes will turn out. arthel: and if we don't have a firm full and complete tally on
1:15 pm
election night, usually the case, are you concerned -- >> we probably won't. arthel: are you concerned some candidates will claim victory regardless and cast doubt on ballots that voters cast? >> yes and it's irresponsible and every candidate should want to win votes based on their message and their plan and they should want as many people to get out there as possible and the truth is, in some of these states for they don't have free processing like pennsylvania, ohio for instance constructive process ballots, check signatures, stacked them up and get them ready for the election day machines beforehand, in the state that don't have rules like that, it might take more hours, days even to tell and with turnout as high as we see right now with so much enthusiasm, it's a possibility and we have a
