it should be a great world series. you will see it on friday night. meantime, talk about some numbers that came out right at midnight. embargoed until midnight. it's bad news. we knew that the pandemic here in the united states killed over a million people. apparently it also deeply hurt america's classrooms and learning. particularly between the fourth and eighth graders in math and reading. look at the numbers they are jaw dropping. >> ainsley: this is called the nation's report card. it is done by the national assessment of educational progress. and they really look at fourth graders and eighth graders. look at that math scores for fourth graders down 5 points and reading down 3 points. look at the eighth graders. math is down 8 points and reading is down 3 points. and there are some big setbacks across our country. they look at all 50 states. d.c., the department of defense schools, puerto rico and 36

larger urban areas that volunteer to be assessed. when they look at all those numbers. those are the results. we accepted setbacks after the pandemic but maybe not this large. it's really worrying parents and teachers. biggest setbacks in delaware, west virginia, oklahoma and northeast region where the districts tended to stay remote longer. they posted some of the most significant score drops. >> brian: delaware, oklahoma and west virginia biggest. gap between black and hispanic and white students very significant. seems like the white students did better and the ones that needed it the most arguably got the least. a lot of times they didn't have the internet. maybe they have two parents working and no supervision. i witnessed it. i'm watching my 11th grader and i'm seeing what is going on. i see my college student at home barely engaged because the teachers had trouble adjusting to new zoom learning. harder for teachers. even the most sincere teachers

were exhausted trying to get parents to engage in parent-teacher conferences which some of which didn't want to get out of bed to do it. so that was hard. i would add this. this is the least surprising study. we have brought this up from day one. there is a flip side to keeping kids at home. we got to keep them safe. the numbers say they are not really at risk there is a slight risk. you give kids the option. no we're not going to do it. keep 6 feet apart. next thing you know two years go by. this is what you do, look at these numbers and get a game plan. take some of the pandemic money that was given to states and put it towards massive extra help. provide a coupon, whatever it is, give it to the huntington learning centers of this country to provide kids with extra time and extra tutoring because some people don't have that extra money. >> steve: here's the thing. whatever happened was made worse by the pandemic. it was actually starting before the pandemic. according to the finding, well, the declines are troubling,

america's numbers were actually falling before the pandemic. scorks were in early 2020. before the pandemic and the lockdown really started and people were dismissed from school. the scores were down the most in 14 years. the first drop -- with 14-year-olds, the scores were down, the biggest in 50 years. and the pandemic simply made it worse. and when you look at the data, it does not necessarily show a connection between back-to-school policies and academic performances because we know that california was locked down probably the longest, right? well, their numbers were on par with texas and florida, which opened early. so whatever was going on before the pandemic, the pandemic made it worse. ains almost 40% of the eighth graders were below the basic level.

parents extremely concerned. we go out and talk to them. recent fox news poll. what are you extremely or very concerned about? look at this. inflation and higher prices 88% are very concerned about that. what's taught in our schools 79%. their concerns are book banning, parents not having enough say and too familiar focus on race or transgender policy. >> steve: and then it comes to abortion policy and things like that. obviously this is something so top of mind. a year ago, in the commonwealth of virginia where glenn youngkin swept to the governor's mansion because he made his message education. and you went down to percyville. >> we interviewed parents in loudoun county and fairfax county. two of the areas where parents were going to school board meetings. one guy was arrested. people were being thrown out. patients were speaking out and said the mama bears and papa bears were finally being heard

by glenn youngkin and did he win in that state. listen to what some of the parents said. we just were there a week ago, october 14th. to say interview softball the parents in that area. >> one of the things they are doing is changing the way they grade. so equity grading, not letting kids fail. so after the pandemic they were bragging about how high the graduation rates were. come to find out you couldn't fail. we don't care what letter is after the candidate's name. we want to see somebody who is going to prioritize students' needs and return the focus to academics. >> i want my kids who are happy and not one to two years hinds in their education. when you try to do school on a computer and you are a kindergartner, what else are they going to do? i did everything i could. i made the bouncy balls. i made the special room. i sat there. and i worked with them. and they still cried. >> >> ainsley: good point.

really quickly tell you about her. she voted for joe biden. and then she decided to vote for glenn youngkin and she said i would do it again. doesn't regret it. >> brian: other thing to keep in mind, too. is that there is no way these kids were learning. a lot of it acts and sats were thrown out as admission into colleges. some got into college anyway. not their fault. they were not learning almost anything. i even have a grammar school teacher in my family that would just talk about the frustration their trying to keep second graders zonsd in. all related to what the cdc has just put out. recommendations that they all get vaccinated or they don't go to school. each state is going to make their own decision. a lot of them take the cdc as a rubber stamp yeah i'm going to do whatever they say. whatever the cdc says it's going to g almost as if we learn absolutely nothing. even over the weekend you watched face the nation. see margaret brennan talking to the cdc expert dr. gottlieb,

should the kid wear masks should they not wear mask? no they should not wear masks. unless they're immunocompromised they can't see faces and slows down their growth. people have to see the flip side of this whole covid lockdown. whatever it is, we have to -- any forward thinking leader democrat or republican, okay. this is where we are at. how do we make it better. don't point fingers anymore now that it's out. enough to make it better. >> steve: as you mentioned a little while ago, brian. they allocated $190 billion to america's schools. let's hope they haven't spent all of it. they should take that because it's going to dig years to dig out of this hole. as a parent and you have got kids you are wondering what can i do? forget about the politician what is can i do? they did a deep dive into the kids who do the best. so, think about this. think about whether or not your student at home has these opportunities do. they have access to a computer or a laptop or a tablet all the

from his substance abuse disorder and nearly losing his own daughter to heroin. and now he is helping fight the epidemic alongside the dea's red ribbon week. that is this week. here with more is international recovery advocate robert. >> good morning, steve. >> steve: thank you for talking about your addiction and almost -- you feel like when your daughter was hooked on heroin a number of years ago, had she been alive -- had she been using today, she would probably be using fentanyl and might not be here. >> no question about it. we are both in recovery from substance disorder. we are thriving in our pathways to recovery. but there was dark times about. five years ago she was locked in an apartment doing a massive amount of drugs. i believe if fentanyl had been in the picture at that time i might have gotten that call from the coroner's office. just because i didn't doesn't mean i can't contribute to try to reverse this public health

emergency. i'm an entrepreneur by trade. this has become my line of work. >> steve: a lot of parents are terrified that they might not know whether or not their kids are popping drugs that could kill them. >> right. >> steve: you knew your daughter was using. >> that's correct. it's a whole different ballgame now. we have the internet. the internet is anonymous, accessible and enormous. you have the sale of these narcotics coded with emojis. it's really out of control. a lot is being done with the d.e.a. but also really the best way to put it our borders are bleeding fentanyl right now. >> steve: sure. as we look at the candy fentanyl that is being -- we talked about this for the last couple of weeks. and coming in around halloween time. are the people put that together, are they trying to just get it in the country so that it looks like whoppers or something like that or are they trying to appeal to kids who like candy? >> right. so i just did an interview on china global television on the proliferation of rainbow

reverse the epidemic. d.e.a. agent was captured and murdered and then there was a public outcry. 1988 the national family partnership sponsored the first red ribbon week the d.e.a. jumped the board in a big way from every week october 23rd to 31st since then and proclamation from congress in 1988 we have celebrated red ribbon week and there will be people wearing red and people wearing ribbons and you will have billings and monuments lined up but really engaging the community, the students, the parents, law enforcement. and fostering an attitude, antidrug attitude of intolerance. >> steve: that photograph we are looking at right there winning photographs. contest celebrating red ribbon week. what i like about the idea. so many people think kids particularly, oh, if i want to
