white house walked back the president's declaration on 60 minutes that the pandemic is over. tonight, there are more mix messages from the white house on covid-19, only this time they could democrat the democrats' priorities. a letter sent to president biden urging him to directly engage with vladimir putin, offer sanctions relief and end the war in ukraine. now lawmakers said the letters was sent by mistake. matt is live with the debate. >> good evening, trace, it is one of the most watched senate races in pennsylvania. both candidates faced off in
9:02 pm
their first and only debate. dr. mehmet oz and fetterman's fitness to serve has been a big focus. fetterman appeared to struggle to complete some sentences. >> so, it is about supporting and helping young earners -- excuse me -- young, young students that give them a break. i believe that supporting -- >> all right. >> fetterman was asked if he'll release his full medical records. he did not give a yes or no answer but said his doctor says he's fit to serve. >> i had a stroke. he never let me forget that. i may miss some words during this debate, two words together but it knocks me down and i am going to keep coming ba
9:03 pm
backup. >> fetterman says he made the community safer. oz says people left the city and police endorsed him. >> part of the problem is that we have taken away the ability of police to do their jobs. that's on john fetterman. fetterman is taking a harsh position. he's undermined them at every level and taking away some of their fundings. >> oz says he would endorse president trump if he ran again and fetterman says he'll support biden. turning to new york with governor ka ka kathy hochul. zeldon hitting hochul of her cashless bail. >> i am going to suspend cashless bail because there is a crime emergency. my opponent thinks now there is a polio emergency going on but not a crime emergency.
9:04 pm
>> anyone committing laws, have consequences. >> governor hochul does not support vaccine mandate for kids at this time. senator zeldin says he does not support vaccine mandate in any way or form. >> matt, we'll see you coming up in the night cap. dr. oz and john fetterman's debate lit up social media where a lot of people saying it is uncomfortable to watch. a lot of people already voting by mail, will this debate move the needle? let's bring in the author of the new book, "come on, man," joe conche, great to see you, always. i want to give people context of where we are. this is the fox news power ranking. you can see right there they are calling it a toss up. we move onto the real clear politics average right here and you can see they are giving fetterman about as 1.3
9:05 pm
percentage well within the margins of error. a lot of people thought it was uncomfortable to watch and here is part of that and i will get your opinion. >> i believe if my doctor believes that i am fit to serve and that's what i believe is appropriate and now with two weeks before the election, i have ran the campaign and i have been transparent and being open about the fact of where i use captioning and i believe my doctors, the real doctors that i believe and they believe that i am ready to be served. >> if you look at the whole debate in its entirety, we can play a lot more of those sound bytes, we won't because you get the gist here. you have a lot of people say i don't know why fetterman people would allow him out on that debate stage. what do you think? >> that's what we heard. this was unmitigated disaster for john fetterman. i don't remember seeing any
9:06 pm
candidate performed worse on that kind of stage than what we witnessed tonight and look, there were low expectations going in for fetterman. the most telling moments, the kind that'll shift this race permanently came on two occasions. the first, when we refused to answer why we simply refused to release his medical record. it is a major issue. john fetterman is asking for a six-year contract to serve in the u.s. contract, he's not being transparent on the state of his health. the second moment came when fetterman could not provide any answers as to why he supports fracking when he declared not long ago that he would, quote, "never support fracking," that's a huge issue in pennsylvania. democrats are alarmed by what they witness tonight
9:07 pm
when fetterman's first word of the debate was hello, good night, everyone. they know any pennsylvania voters on defense between oz or fetterman who may have stayed home or absolutely not vote for mr. fetterman after that performance. after the debate, john fetterman throughout the hour seemed to lose steam and his answers became more in coherent the longer the debate went on, unquote. that sums it up. trace. >> with that, i want to move onto the next one because the new york governor's debate was also tonight. let's put the power ranking up about that one, too. you have kathy hochul and lee zeldin. this is moving solid democrat to likely democrat. when you see new york starts to get a little red in there, it is nerve-racking for democrats because that could be the bell weather
9:08 pm
for the wave. >> absolutely, trace, we saw several polls last week that showed lee zeldin is actually leading kathy hochul. this is a state andrew cuomo won with 60% of the vote, yes. we are talking of the deepest of the blue states but with crimes becoming such an overw overwhelming issue. this is something that zeldin has hammered home and it is important to new york voters. with only two weeks to go, it is a toss up with hochul having, it seems no momentum on her side. she was once up 23 points in this race and now that basically evaporated. >> you are talking about a huge lead evaporated, do you think it is all crimes or are people seeing other things in here that they don't like? >> i think it is the overall mood of the country, right?
9:09 pm
new yorkers because they're taxed so high really feeling inflation more than anybody. that's a huge issue, gas prices are a huge issue. we mentioned crimes and we can go through the litany of issues around education and masking kids that kathy hochul supported that many parents have not forgotten about. what you are talking about, new york, i live inn inner new jersey, that was an indicator that blue states are no longer a lock for democrats given the environment around crimes. >> i want to play this, this was hillary clinton who said something fairly stunning and i will get your last comment on this. watch, joe. >> i know we are all focused on the 2022 midterm elections and they are incredibly important. we have to also look ahead because you know what? our opponents certainly are. right wing extremists
9:10 pm
already have a plan to literally steal the next presidential election. they're not making a secret of it. >> if a republican said that, joe, it would be a big lie, too. it would be an assault on democracy. your final thoughts? >> and a 24/7 story. yeah, let's listen to hillary clinton, the original election denier who said that donald trump was illegitimate after he won and said that her election was stolen from her. now, she's throwing out this conspiracy theory that now right-wing extremists already planning to steal the 2024 election. she does so without evidence and we should not take it seriously given her past statement of her own election being stolen from her. >> joe, great to see you, sir. thank you for coming on. >> take care, sir. apparently for president biden, the pandemic is back on. last month he said it was over and now he said

9:17 pm
>> i thought she had it exactly right. i see this and all the actions that the russians haves under taken in recent weeks as all driving towards the same thing. how can we force the europeans and the biden administration to put pressure on the ukrainians to go to early negotiations? why were the russians favor that? because they are getting slaughtered on the battlefield. they need to get to a cease-fire and so-called negotiations as quickly as possible so they can reconstitute and rearm. they are putting themselves out there as if they will have sincere and good faith. they want to make it to the winner so they'll survive. >> yeah, you talk about cease-fire, is it your opinion that without a cease-fire that it may be time or you believe it is time for vladimir putin to change his strategy for better or worse?
9:18 pm
>> he should have changed his strategy weeks ago and likely retrench to a defensible set of lines. instead, he kept on trying to fight the ukrainians. the ukrainians are winning virtually every part of the battlefield. they are making substantial gains in the south. i think its go the russians panicked because they know that ukrainians very much want to reestablish corridors down to the black sea. ukrainians see that as the biggest part of the future viability of the country being able to trade and get to commercial ships and the russians are just hoping that winter comes as soon as possible and want to get negotiations going, even sooner if they could. >> yeah, amazing. michael allen, great to see you as always, thank you. the russian court rejecting an appeal by american basketball star of brittney griner of her nine-year prison sentence.
