new jersey's homeless population and has one-sixth highest rate of substance abuse in new jersey. that is why eva's village in paterson, new jersey, has stepped in to help you or the organization provides assistance for those struggling with hunger, homelessness and addiction. they are celebrating 40 years at their annual leave in a better tomorrow gala which is next week. joining us right now are eva's village ceo and formers eva village client pamela and joining us from paterson, new jersey. good morning to both of you. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> steve: howard, it is great to have you. we were talking during the commercial break. for a number of years, my wife and i, kathy, actually volunteered even as village and we did the galas and raised a lot of money. it is such an extraordinary and it started with -- and now you

have an extraordinary 3,000 volunteers and you help 5,000 people. why do you do it? >> it is very simple comic steve. thank you for having us here. we do it because we are to help people struggling with hunger, homelessness, property, and addiction. our community has a soaring need and the need is greater than ever. so we are here to provide the guide and support and resources they need that will empower them to live healthy, independent, and productive lives. >> steve: that's right. it started as a soup kitchen for 40 years later, you have a community kitchen and overnight emergency temporary shelter. you have recovery substance abuse programs, outpatient mental health services, halfway house, child care, anything people need, you got it. it is unbelievable. in the last fiscal year, you served a quarter of a million people, including people like pamela who is right there.

pamela, i know when you were 16, essentially you were deserted, turned to drugs. how did eva's help you out of that will make you were and question marks >> actually, eva's helped me by making me fey have growing up. they taught me skills and tools that i needed to handle life on life's terms. and find that balance between my addiction, mental health, and being a single mother as well. they taught me the importance and how to just have the routine, you know, it things as little as getting up in the morning. you know, making my bed, having three meals a day.
