out people's words about trump. no one motivates democrats better than donald trump. he motivates a lot of republicans, but he motivates democrats, i think, even more, which is why he lost to joe biden, because the democrats turned out in unbelievable numbers to vote against him more than for biden. they would love the election to be more about him. until these recent days, he's been pretty much in the background, and i think that has undoubtedly helped republicans. >> harris: well, he is out now. [laughs] he was next to obama, and the dichotomy was on point. you could really see it. >> when you are in -- you have to make these calculations. on fox nation -- on the verge of becoming the first house candidate to win in rhode island in 20 years. he did so by focusing on the issues. other places, president trump was brought in.

ohio, for example tonight. just have to be strategic in the election. one thing i would say is -- democracy dying is the new "defund the police." we saw that backfire in 2020. house seats were picked up across the country. abigail spanberger of the dutch -- stop saying "defund the police." there may be another conference call where they say "lets stop saying that," because the third way of poll is interesting. when you ask people "are democrats looking out for the middle class?" 54% no, 55% "they don't share my values." have they got more extreme"? 59% yes. a democratic think tank ran this poll. the point is there is a messaging misalignment were voters are saying one thing in the democratic party is saying another.

[laughter] >> emily: good imagination. >> brit: what he was talking about is how he is familiar with the situation, which when the fuel price budget had to come down, you would have to eat something like what he described. the problem with the answer wasn't that so much, it's the fact that he said nothing at least that we heard about what he would like to see done about it. the question was left, obviously, unanswered, as far as we can tell. >> emily: and that's the one point: this is an elected official whose salary is paid by taxpayers. >> harris: on pay all? [laughter] >> emily: and the response to "what have you done to solve the problem," was "i've been there and we have done it with a tight budget." he is responsible for those pressures with policy, but has nothing. >> harris: i talk about this all the time on the show.

this is this idea of empathy. when you are out of ideas, at least show people that you care. they are doing neither. i don't know how it's going to turn out tomorrow, but to see it in real time from sean patrick maloney is disingenuous about what they say they want to accomplish. they call things "the inflation reduction act," but they don't want to take care of inflation. they want to spend money on climate change. and that's fine, just tell it what it -- just tell us what it is. the honesty is that he doesn't care. i agree with brit, at least we know where he stands! at least we know he's out of answers and doesn't care how you feel, with lower budgets for gas and food. by the way do not impugn chef boyardee. sign of failure. he made it sound like "when my family couldn't figure out what to do, we just did that." let's talk about american-made companies! let's take a deeper than that. come up with more names. i think it's really disingenuous for he and other democrats to say they want to solve the problems of their constituents when they continue to make more and don't want to show ownership, and do not have -- "i can borrow it, they don't have to mean it." >> emily: and harris was generous for at least giving him the point for honesty. that connection is so important. that's the condescension we've been hearing from the democratic party the entire t time. americans who eat and shop at walmart, that that is somehow degrading, somehow worth less, that they are worthless in the eyes of the democratic party. >> kayleigh: we are seeing the same dismissive attitude from the white house. they are having this risky, esoteric debate about whether we

are in a recession. coming out and saying -- not in a recession. we are not meeting and discussion recession -- discussing ridgecrest -- inflation is still with us in a very robust fashion. what they risk doing is the, number one, bloomberg projection which is 100% that we would be in recession by october of '23. number two, voters feel they are in a recession. cnn polling 75% feel they are in a recession. the commentator pulled up a newspaper "wages are going up." this was before the 2016 election. if only you can get the message out there. you shouldn't have to, people should feel their paychecks going up. speak about such a great segue. the fox news sunday that you post every sunday is incredible, its objective, and you see can report the facts. the mainstream media has had a

difficult time acknowledging those facts. republicans are using the word "inflation" which is not part of the normal lexicon, that that is somehow not what americans feel, it's a disconnected word. like -- what do they do with crime using formal words, but you covered every sunday. that's not how it is. >> the president was talking about a year ago. he said at the time that no serious economists -- back in july of last year -- thought there be any sustained runaway inflation of any kind. he was using the word inflation back then and told us that it wouldn't get up to the nine's eight's. he also told us that you could eat generic raisin bran. you can't buy my kit on brands. he said that a couple weeks ago. i would rather take the chef boyardee than raisin bran. >> harris: they need to feed people if they will talk as much about food. watching the children of a congressional candidate there -- and of course paul pelosi. this is happening on both sides and needs to end. >> it does. it did not used to happen like this, but we are living in divided times. people's passions are raging. as for this incident here, we don't know much about the guy who did that. he might've been some random guy in a bad mood. i'm not sure kathy hogle needs to apologize. i don't see how you can tie it to her. nonetheless, this is a bad situation. people -- politics, protesting, should not be attacked. >> it is simple. i wish the rhetoric would come down. i want to be clear: we have heard elevated rhetoric on the right, the left, but i was a bit stunned -- i gave him the benefit of the doubt on friday.

he's typically very measured, certainly has a lot of respect on both sides of the aisle, so i was a bit taken back. you pressed him three times on that 1930s point and touch him not backing down. >> i thought he might temper it. he had a couple days to see the backlash for people to say up -- it's not the first time he's used that imagery and invoked that conversation many times, talking about 1930s germany, the rise of hitler, and for some people, that's never comparison you should make to anything we are experiencing now. i thought he might say "i was a little heated," but i asked him about another statement he made where he talked about if you don't vote democrat, it's the end of the world. and "we played your sound bite, i will play it back to you." that's what you are telling people. and he said "maybe i want too far." he did acknowledge that may be some of the language is a bit

hyperbolic and heated up. the situation with the supporter -- and again, so much we don't know about that -- then i saw the video and thought "that's potentially criminal behavior." >> harris: when someone puts their hands around her neck -- >> they go too far paid >> kayleigh: i wish we could get back to the time. i remember i was on president obama's campus, the most robust, pleasant debates with peers. experiments come on but nevertheless -- [laughter] my point is that you could have that back and forth. >> i love the way you put it. a good debate used to not be an experiment. it used to be a way of life in america. that's what free speech is about: you say your part, get together, and we end in a civil nature. right now, everything is about the end it's so existential even clyburn has caught this disease of existentialism.

he -- he has always been a gaffe machine. but these days, they look more conscious to me. he continues trying to say things that will appeal to the core democratic base. has candidates on the trail need more than that. if you alienate people and energy states, that's not going to help. that is clearly what -- likely to do: gas. >> emily: clearly it has alienated voters who are confused by the rhetoric, but also a lot of candidates, incumbents and otherwise who have said no thanks to campaigning with the president for the reasons brit just articulated. >> and it creates a headache for the white house. on the messaging front -- we get a statement back from the white house press secretary saying "we are sorry if anyone was offended or confused or twisted by the words."

[laughter] >> crime issues and all the rest of it. i am surprised. they are so silly. the one about his having criticized disney after -- 12 years ago is the silliest thing i've ever read. so what if -- a schoolteacher? imagine anyone who looks at that hasn't already made up their mind like "site, only known that, wouldn't have voted for the guy." it's absurd. >> interesting who they are looking for the potential 2024 contender.

20 with independents, 20 with latinos -- they are targeting someone with a robust level of support. >> and the reason why is because of the plans he's executing, how he has resonated with voters and impacting their lives. the absurdity of these hit pieces is so trivial, it feels, in comparison to the reason he is successful and popular -- that is reflected in the polls. to me, this goes back to an illustration of how exactly the democratic party and apologist mainstream media has -- the entire time, while ron desantis has his sleeves rolled up and is working. the mainstream media says "let's find something that will have viewers be come a voters be turned off by him," but viewers don't care. they care about what's in front of them at the kitchen table, what's in their bank account,

all of those things. once again, the mainstream media and democratic party get it wrong. >> ten hours after tim scott was announced -- to get these rebuttals, "the washington post" headline was "tim scott often talks about his grandfather him --" speak of the reason they stand out so much is because journalists are all missing the opportunity to do something responsible, which is due your hit piece and then balance that out with real reporting that says "based on -- the sanibel causeway is put back in record time, thought it would take more than a year." governor said "i will galvanize --" the way he essentially led a seal team won back in the day, former military, and he will get people on and off that island. where's the writing about the fact that it hadn't been for this work, every single day going down is curbside.
