>> sandra: top of the hour, a fox news alert. police warning the small college town of moscow, idaho to stay vigilant, no suspect, no motive, and no weapon days after somebody stabbed and killed four
11:01 am
college students in their own home just blocks away from campus. i'm sandra smith in new york. just a horrifying story top to bottom, john. >> john: it is, and the way things are changing is troubling. that's where we start hour two of "america reports" with the community on edge, and a killer on the loose. >> no one would have ever imagined something slightly like this could happen in moscow, idaho. i have walked at night and have not worried but it's going to flip a lot of that upside down. >> sandra: and new surveillance footage seen here from a food struck that shows two out of the four victims talking with friends just hours before somebody killed them, and now new focus on the murder weapon and the crime scene after the coroner says it's likely one knife, the same knife was used and that all four are homicide victims. >> john: dr. michael baden who has handled high profile crime
11:02 am
scenes is standing by with his analysis and the big questions that are still out there. but we begin with dan springer live in moscow, idaho. there are reports police may be searching for a combat style knife. what more do we know about that? >> that's right, it's a six-inch knife, called a k bar, that's a brand name, and this is a long knife and we do know the police are looking for a knife like that, but the bottom line is the police finally had a news conference last night and what came out of that is that they said what the people around here have been feeling ever since these four students were murdered and that is that the community is still very much at risk. there is still a threat out there with this murderer still on the loose. we also now have some video of two of the victims, madison and kayleigh, at a food truck just hours before they were murdered, and a shocking detail from the news conference. there were two other roommates in the rental house home during
11:03 am
the murders and they have been cooperating with police. they were uninjured. and another person living at the rental house was with her boyfriend ethan at a party before returning to the house about 1:45. no sign of forced entry or evidence of a robbery. they would not say if the unhurt roommates slept through the slayings or were tied up, nothing else about the roommates. the university of idaho president also spoke and got choked up talking about the victims. >> first my deepest condolences to the families. and friends, excuse me. their loss has been devastating and they were bright lights in our community.
11:04 am
>> a knife like this could be the weapon police are looking for reportedly for asking stores if they sold one recently. the autopsies, as i said, were done yesterday. the coroner told me all four victims were stabbed to death. they are homicides, she said it's likely that it was the same knife used on all four of the victims, and so that tells us, john, that they are looking for one suspect. it's hard to imagine two other people being in the house at the same time not waking up, not being aware of what was going on. remember, the 911 call came in eight hours after the murders at like 12:00 in the afternoon on sunday. so, these murders took place between 3 and 4, there were two other people in the house, 911 call comes in eight hours later, police are not saying who made the call, but more questions than answers coming out of the news conference as they continue to search for the suspect, john. >> john: the whole thing is very puzzling and the poor parents
11:05 am
are at a lost to understand this as well. dan springer in moscow, idaho. thank you. >> sandra: let's bring in dr. baden, forensic pathologist and fox news contributor. troubling every aspect of the story and parents are rightly terrified the fact the person is on the loose, no suspect, and there's a lot of details to take in. what strikes you right now about this story? >> well, the very fact that the mention that the other two persons in the house were -- may have been unaware of what was going on, which may mean that perhaps the deaths did not all occur at the same time, but whoever did it could have been laying in wait, and one of the things that could happen determine that is the times of death, and the medical examiner at the scene using rigomotis,
11:06 am
the blood, temperature of the body, may be able to tell whether or not the four victims were killed at the same time or at different times. the digestions, the contents of the stomach can also tell how long after the last meal each of them died, and perhaps the death may occur when the first couple comes in, laying in wait, and the second couple, to see whether or not anybody was bound or gagged during the time, and of course, will tell whether there were any sexual attack, whether there was a struggle. one of the things of interest is when this many stab wounds and a lot of blood, blood is very slippery and sometimes the perpetrator is cut by the
11:07 am
slippage of the knife and some of the blood at the scene can belong to the perpetrator and dna will be able to evaluate that. >> john: doctor, parents, as we said at the top of this and dan springer's fine report are very frustrated by the lack of answers from law enforcement. we heard from them last night first time publicly, parents are also frustrated why police have declared it to be an isolated event. the sister to one of the victims said anything can be isolated until it's not, and until we have someone in custody there is no way with any amount of confidence to say this is isolated. this likely goes more to law enforcement investigation than to forensics, but what do you think about how the police have conducted at least the public side of this investigation so far, including at the very beginning of this, no ongoing
11:08 am
threat to the public and then yesterday walking that back? >> i think what happens in a situation like this is the police know a great deal more than they are telling the public right now. mostly because they don't want to alert the perpetrator, and i would not just exclude a single -- more than one person. the knife may have been the same weapon but that doesn't mean there was not a second person there to control four people. if all four people are there at the same time, it's very hard for one perpetrator to control all four not running out, not jumping out the window, not waking up the other two people. one of the things that's also interesting about multiple knife stabbings is that if the knife strikes bone, the tip of the knife might break off in the course of the stabbing and if
11:09 am
that tip of the knife is picked up by autopsy or by x-ray before the autopsy that can be a fingerprint of what the weapon is, if weapons are found and they can be matched up with that tip. >> sandra: all obviously very difficult for people to hear, just absolutely horrific this all played out, dr. baden. these are just some of the bulleted points that we got from the coroner on these murders. noting that there was quite a bit of blood inside of the house and of course the pictures have been seen, they are extremely graphic. the scene was described as traumatic, the autopsy, the coroner says, could lead to some evidence of a suspect and the coroner ruled out this being a case of murder-suicide. but to that third point that the autopsy could lead to some evidence of a suspect, take us down that road.
11:10 am
>> well, raising the issue of even a suicide involved here would be determined in part by where the stab wounds were in the bodies. the coroner, the medical examiner did the autopsy, knows there are stab wounds front, back, sideways, neck, whether they are self-inflicted type or homicide type. now it sounds here thus far that these are four homicides. this is not the suicide-homicide situation that occasionally occurs. and i think that the video and security cameras in the neighborhood may tell a great deal about what's going on. i'm sure the police are taking all of the security videos from all the house and any of the neighbors that might include some issue as to who came there.
11:11 am
often they would come by vehicle, outside, looking very closely at tire marks, are there tire marks imprints that don't belong to the people at the residence. but one knife, if it is a single knife that matches all four bodies, does not necessarily rule out another person who maintained the 3 or 4 people in a condition where they couldn't cry for help and was also present. so that has to be not excluded here. >> john: just to come back to your point about the knife and whether perhaps they have a clue what type of knife it was. apparently police, according to local reports, have gone around to a building supply company asking if they sell the k bar knives, the standard issue marine combat knife. you don't have to buy them from a building supply company, i could push add to cart right
11:12 am
now, and buy one for $128. but come back to something else, was there one person or were there two people to control the people while the murders took place. this all occurred about 3:00 in the morning after the four were out at various parties or going to bars or whatever. you might sleep soundly after a party. would it be possible in your estimation to be able to kill four people without anyone else in the house being alerted? >> well, they wouldn't be alert if there were no calls out or cries for help or struggling. and that's why if you had one person and four victims, there will be calls out, and maybe one couple came in before the other couple and they were bound,
11:13 am
gagged, stabbed, and he waited for the other people to come in. or can't rule out that there was a second person there, another person there to control, and whether or not there was any kind of sexual attack if one was looking for motives of strangers. but it's odd, it's very odd to have -- unless as was mentioned earlier the two in the bedroom, in the other apartment, were bound and gagged and could not get out for four hours, which sounds unlikely, unlikely, but that's also a possibility. >> sandra: all right. just a lot of details to take in there and horrific story and parents who are demanding answers and a community that still needs to remain vigilant. police obviously had to walk back the idea they would be safe
11:14 am
out there in the community when they don't have the suspect. dr. baden, thank you. >> john: thanks, doc. >> thank you, and hopefully they will resolve this. >> sandra: soon. a fox news alert, drug smugglers off the coast of puerto rico shot agents and killed one, they are part of the air and marine operations arm. they were airlifted to a trauma center in puerto rico. john. >> john: sandra, police in california moments ago making an arrest after a car plowed into a crowd of l.a. county police recruits injured, they were out for a morning run. this is new surveillance video from the crash and you can see the car going the wrong way up the street barrelling into them and then hitting a light pole. the sheriff says more than two dozen recruits were hurt. william live in los angeles with the latest. what charges is the driver
