hospitals with conditions unknown at this time. the suspect is dead from what we believe is a self-inflicted gunshot wound. the chesapeake police swat team executed a search warrant at the suspect's residence and with the help of the virginia state police we cleared the house. we have reason to believe that there is no risk to the public at this time. >> let's get straight to griff jenkins from the ground reporting outside that wal-mart in chesapeake. what can you tell us this hour? >> good morning, gillian and mike. a lot more questions than there are answers. some information from chesapeake's police chief. we know the gunman was an employee at wal-mart. the identities of the six victims not released nor was the gunman's identity. a bit of a timeline. at 10:12 p. the 911 call came into dispatch.

the ultimatum mccarthy is giving mayorkas over his handling of the situation at the border. let's bring in former border patrol chief. >> good morning, mike. >> let's start with some numbers. october's numbers more than 230,000 people encountered at the border according to customs and border protection. you can see the trend from previous octobers. how alarming do you consider that trend? >> it's unprecedented. we have never seen the kind of traffic, illegal crossings at our southwest borders. it has never happened before in the history of the country. so this is a threat to all of us, right? those people don't stay at the border. they come to every city and every town in the united states. we know that there are many criminals in that group. hundreds of them. hundreds and hundreds of gang members. people on the terrorist

screening database. that means they're affiliated or government believes they're affiliated with terrorists. that kind of traffic and chaos at the border which is very preventable by the way is putting us all at risk. >> kevin mccarthy who wants to be next speaker of the house dropping the hammer on the homeland security secretary. let's play some more of it. >> we first take the investigation, the orders, lying to the american public, withholding ice from doing their job, not following through on what the laws on the books are today. we never do impeachment for political purposes. we are having an investigation. we know exactly what secretary mayorkas has done. >> is the resign or face impeachment ultimatum legitimate in your view? >> it is unprecedented. we're in a situation where a cabinet secretary is under threat of impeachment.
6:06 am
we've never seen anything like this. it is because this border is out of control. we've never seen anything like it. house oversight and what will be the leader needs to take the department to task. they need to find out what they have done, what they are going to do. they refuse to call it a problem for most of the time he has been the secretary. he doesn't want to call it a crisis and is resourcing the problem. everything they've done is made it worse. he talks about the border as if it's secure. we all know and see the images on your channel every day that it is not. so taking him to task with oversight and with the hearings is important because we've got -- someone has to take action here. the department is failing to do their job. it is a dereliction of duty. he took an oath that says he will discharge the duties of the office. he is not doing that. the laws are on the books that says it's illegal to cross the border without inspection. we have an uncontrolled out of control chaotic word border and
6:07 am
he is in charge. if president biden asked you how to fix it, what would you tell him? >> reinstate the protocols. engage mexico's assistance and get this border under control. have them control their southwest border. have them put troops back on our northern border. if people want due process to have an asylum claim in the united states we welcome them to wait in mexico so they can have their hearing and due process. that will stop many people from coming because the incentive to be released into the united states is pulling thousands and thousands of people in because that's what's happening. that's their experience on the border. they come, they have a brief stay with cbp and released into the country. that incentive is strong and we've sent the signal around the globe and why we're seeing the unprecedented number at the border. >> former border patrol chief. thank you for your time and have an awesome day.
6:08 am
>> you, too. thank you. >> interesting to see, gillian, what the homeland security secretary does. with republicans taking the majority, there will be a new speaker, new house chairs that they will be doing oversight and see if there is a change of action. >> it's interesting that the border patrol chief was just ousted last week. the new acting border patrol chief troy miller to ron's point has deep expertise in counter terrorism operations. maybe that signals a shift in the administration's thinking about the approach to the border. perhaps not. i submit that for your consideration. >> we'll follow it. >> police in idaho are set to give an update on the invest into the bloody murder of four university students last week. a lot of people asking a lot of questions that remain unanswered. there is no suspect yet.
6:09 am
what we can expect from today's briefing, dan, what do you have for us? >> gillian, police have been very tight lipped this entire investigation. it has led to some problems and led to a lot of rumors and speculation out there and frankly there are more questions than answers at this point and interesting to see if they take the opportunity at today's news conference to start to share more of what they know in hopes of generating some tips on this case. right now they don't seem close to solving the murder. they did have people telling them that kaylee goncalves may have had someone stalking her. police pursued hundreds of pieces of information related to that topic and have not been able to verify or identify any stalker. also we're getting our first look inside the house where the four students were murdered. heartbreaking video. the three female victims all roommates and good friends made a tiktok video imitating each other and that video was made
6:10 am
just days before they were killed. as for the investigation, police still have not identified the suspect or found the murder weapon that they describe as a fixed blade knife. the coroner said it had a long blade. after eight days of the crime scene being scoured, yesterday was the first time we saw no investigative activity. they might feel like they have all they are going to get from the house. a behavior analysis unit joined the investigation but so far nothing official about the profile of the killer. a neuro psychologist with jesse water talking about the killer using a knife. >> the knife forces the killer to get up close and personal with the victims. it suggests he might have wanted the victims to actually see him and that he probably also wanted to see the fear that he was instilling in the victims during
6:11 am
the attacks. >> again, we're having a news conference today with police. it will be 1:00 local time. we were told that there are no other news conferences planned after this one. they are waiting for stuff to develop for information to surface so they can release it. right now we aren't expecting a lot from today's news conference. >> dan springer in moscow for us this morning. we'll check in with you. >> investigators are searching for a motive following a mass shooting at a wal-mart. new details this hour. >> president biden's student loan plan is taking another legal turn. >> the white house reportedly shoring up its defenses as republicans prepare an onslaught of congressional investigations and how concerned should the administration be? you can borrow up to 100% of your home's value. veterans get more at newday usa.

>> mike: president biden is extending the pause on federal opportunity loan repayment as the debt forgiveness plan faces legal challenges. the d.o.j. is asking the security to rule on the plan. lucas tomlinson is live in nantucket, massachusetts where the president is spending thanksgiving holiday. >> good morning, mike. president biden arrived here last night on nantucket island around 8:00 and staying at a $20 million pad across the island. he said he will take the student debt fight all the way to the supreme court. >> president biden: right now it's on hold because of these lawsuits. we're not going to back down in our fight to give families breathing room. it isn't fair to ask tens of millions of borrowers eligible for relief to resume student debt payments while the courts consider the lawsuit.
6:18 am
>> critics say biden is breaking his vow back in august when he promised to only extend the moratorium until new year's eve. some point the next month's critical runoff in georgia is one of the reasons. biden back in august with the promise not to extend the payments. he did not indicate there was wiggle room on this. >> president biden: student loan payment pause is going to end. it is going to end -- i'm extending it to december 31, 2022, and it is going to end at that time. it is time for the payments to resume. >> here in this little island of massachusetts many people believe this is the home of the first thanksgiving across nantucket sound on plymouth rock but the first thanksgiving was in jamestown, virginia. >> mike: looks like a postcard behind you. my question is the president was adamant the end of the year. now bumping it back six months.

is that the only thing he can control while the courts are considering whether this is even legal? >> that's what the president is saying, mike. he is saying until the security weighs in he will extend the payments. courts have already said congress control the purse. many people think it is unconstitutional. >> mike: lucas with the educational live shot. first thanksgiving in virginia, thanks very much. >> gillian: take a look at this. turns out most americans do not want politics on the table this thanksgiving. a new poll out now that finds that just about 2/3 of americans, 65% are hoping to avoid political discussions period when they sit down with family and friends this year. let's bring in guy benson, the

political. i am a very political person. we think about these things every day. for the job you know that, i know that. it is part of the description of what we do. i'm very lucky to do it and very blessed. i also think the occasional respite is a chance to talk about nothing to do with holidays. it is to give thanks, to talk about gratitude, to be with loved ones and friends and family and that sort of thing. what we do in my family, a very cool tradition and people are very welcome if they want to steal it. we put three kernels of uncooked corn at each place setting. as dinner unfolds we go around and each person lists off three things they're thankful for in the previous year leading up to thanksgiving. it is moving at times and really uplifting. almost complete apolitical and

i'm looking forward to that tomorrow. >> gillian: i like the corn kernels. i have a 1-year-old daughter. i don't know if she will get into the corn kernels. might be a choking hazard but we'll try it. i want to ask you about politics quick. coming up in the new year when house republicans come back to town, we're learning the biden administration is batting down the hatches and doing all kinds of preparations in anticipation of this onslaught of investigations. take a look at this. this is from "politico." president joe biden and aides are moving with speed to counter an anticipated barrage of right wing attacks. theory among several aides and close white house allies is the unending scrutiny will backfire and come to be seen purely as partisan overreach. is that smart political analysis or is that like pie in the sky hoping and dreaming? >> well might be a little bit of both. if the republicans do overreach
6:23 am
and just spray at everything and there is no discipline and it is not connected to things that the american people are concerned about or believe are legitimate it could backfire for the republicans. i think what the republicans need to think about carefully at the leadership level, chairmanship level of these committees is what are the least defensible errors of this administration? what are the areas that require the most accountability and oversight where the american people say yes, that's legitimate and something we should get answers about, whether it's the afghanistan debacle, the border crisis that i mentioned, a few other of these topics that have been swirling out there absolutery are fair game. if republicans put the white house on the back heels where this dough haven't good answers i think the plan they have that it will all end of blowing up in
6:24 am
the republican's faces, i don't think that's how it will play out. >> gillian: andy biggs said first move forward with the hunter biden investigation. what do you make of that? >> it's a fair area to ask questions about. we haven't really gotten answers on that. of course, there is a federal investigation into hunter biden so maybe let that play out, see what will happen there and, of course, the hunter biden issue fundamentally is a joe biden issue given some of the things the president or then candidate biden had said and asserted which seem to be not true. that's one area of interest for sure. there are others that might be more relevant to those types of swing voters that republicans struggled with a few weeks ago. there is no shortage of real failures to look into from this administration. the republicans will finally have some of the authority, power and gavels to do just that
