sales to cross items of otheir christmas list. >> steve: this year, retailers in the united states are under pressure to give big, deep discounts because, inflation has taken a big bite out of your spending power. >> carley: it certainly is grady trimble from fox business is live on michigan avenue in chicago to tell us more. hey, grady. >> good morning, carley, lawrence and steve. yes, the big retailer started of deals earlier than ever this year. both in store and online. but, this weekend is still expected to be the biggest shopping event of the year. the national retail federation is forecasting that this black friday threw cyber monday will break records. they say more than 166 million people will shop this weekend. spending between 6 to #% more than last year. with inflation as high as it is. shoppers say finding good deals is as important as ever. but, today might not be the best time to buy. depending on what you're looking for.

you will find the deepest discounts on tv's this black friday today. but for toys, clothes and computers, experts say you are better off waiting until this weekend for the best deals. one way inflation is hitting shoppers is that even though they are spending more, about $500 per person on average, their dollar is just in the going as far as it did last year. deloitte says shoppers bought about 16 gifts last year this weekend. and this time around, they are only buying about 9 gifts. so you just don't have as much bang for your bucks a you used, to guys? >> steve: grady, are you seeing people shopping there on michigan avenue so early in the morning? >> you know, it's interesting. because this used to be the mecca for shopping, especially on black friday but no, it's quite quiet out here. times have changed. i think a lot of people would rather shop in their pajamas on their couch. >> steve: i think you are absolutely right. all right, grady trimble live in chicago with the latest.

here's something -- i don't know if you are going to notice this today, but i noticed it, gavin hadn't, our top producer noticed it. i'm getting a ton of emails, direct emails to me from big box companies, click on this to get stuff. walmart, costco, lowe's mikey. >> carley: did you sign up. >> steve: no. they are not actually from the outfits. >> lawrence: oh, wow. >> steve: when you get an email, look at who it is from. don't push any of the buttons other than who it is from. if it's from walmart.com. can you trust that but these things i'm getting are not from the company. so, be careful. there are a lot of scammers out there on this black friday. >> carley: that's unfortunate. when you think about the big box retailers, they are going to be okay. >> steve: they are going to be fine. >> carley: then you have all the small businesses out there. small business saturday is tomorrow. tomorrow is going to be such an

important day for so many small business owners around the country because they have been hit so hard by inflation and the labor shortage and the supply chain issues. on "fox & friends" earlier this morning. i spoke to three small business owners about what black friday and especially small business saturday means to them and how nervous they are about their businesses and, also on the possible rail strike that is coming up. take a listen to all they had to say. >> it has became ridiculously high to purchase goods to bake cookies to the point where it's not even economical to charge that much to the customer for them to pay that much for a cookie. >> inflation for us has been a problem for 18 months, even though we don't have rail delivery directly to our plant, the sugar that we use comes across the country on rail. we have already been warned by our sugar suppliers, if there is

a rail strike we can expect interruptions in the rail strikes. as an owner of a candy factory that evenings our business. >> as a business owner part of what the we did do is pivoting. we have to learn how to pivot in an unsure market. >> carley: can i say something really quickly? >> steve: absolutely. >> carley: we were talking about the rail strike earlier in the show. and, you know, we were talking about the president and whether or not is he actually negotiating. karine jean-pierre said yes the president said no he is not involved in it yet. seems like this higher level conversation. you listen to that small business owner larry in ohio he is already worried about it. he knows that the sugar for his candy could be on back order. he is not going to get it. that's going to affect his business. ashley brown, the first woman you heard from. she makes cookies in birmingham, alabama, this is cookie season for her. she is shutting down her business because ingredients are too expensive. she says she is going to start baking again next year but she has a cookbook out because she

so much travels by rail, not to mention coal a fuel oil to heat your house. the railroads will start preparing on december 2nd and right now it's not looking good. in the meantime. remember it was just earlier this week out of nowhere cbs announces hey, we looked into the laptop, it's true. this was, of course, what, 750 days after the "new york post" broke the story that the laptop was hunter biden had some crazy stuff on it. well, now, there was somebody who -- a twitter user yesterday asked elon musk hey, now that you run the place, are you going to tell us what went on behind the scenes at twitter to censor the post and others? and he said yes. >> carley: yeah, look at this tweet. the original tweet said raise your hand if you think elon musk should make public all internal discussions about the decision to censor the "new york post" story on hunter biden's laptop before the 2020 election in the interest of transparency?

and then elon musk responded to that. this is necessary to restore public trust. ant this isn't the first time he said something like this before. he said that it was obviously malpractice for twitter to censor the hunter biden laptop story. he said that even before he took over the company. >> this the treason why this is so interesting. if we get to the bottom of what happened at twitter. then we will start to hear what was happening at the other companies as well. they all work together on this story if a what we know so far. suppress this story they said it was different information. what i would be curious to know which we already kind of know, someone with internally really think it was disinformation or were they doing it just for political purposes? and i think that's -- it's one thing if they didn't know and they really thought it was the russians, but what we found so far with some of the leaks that elon has put out since he bought the company. even when he was trying to buy the company. a lot of stuff was not restreeld in court that should have been

revealed in court of what they were doing behind the scenes to suppress different types of information. >> you know, i don't know that we are going to hear from google about their algorithms. i don't know if we are going to hear from facebook or anything else. but, given the fact that elon musk very famously said look, it's got to be the public square. people need to know what's going on. if he can find it. he will make it public. congressman michael waltz from the great state of florida was on with us about half an hour ago and had this observation over the laptop story which we were told by the mainstream media russian disinformation but now, of course, that's not true. >> elon is right in the sense that this is another blow to public institutions. another blow to trust. with the american people. and what had me so upset about that entire episode were the national security officials. i mean, people see former heads of the cia, former heads of the director of national intelligence, the highest clearances in the land, tell the

country it's russian disinformation and, therefore, deserving of censorship and now that erodes trust. the next time we say hey, china is about to invade taiwan, trust us. trust the intelligence, nobody is going to. so, i'm looking forward to it elon truly bringing -- trying to bring some transparency and trust back to our system. >> carley: congressman brings up such a good point there. because we know from mark zuckerberg when he did joe rogan's podcast. he talked about his decision making as to why facebook censored the story and it was because fbi agents went to him and said watch out for a data dump of russian disinformation. so then the question becomes is it social media's fault for censors the story incorrectly? >> steve: because they were told by these authorities hey, it's russian disinformation. >> carley: you have jack dorsey the former head saying it should have never. >> steve: title mistake. >> carley: is it really -- whose fault was it really?

where is the head of the snake? is the fbi? is it social media? and maybe we will find out. details. >> lawrence: to your point, carley, the letter that went out to former intelligence officials we know who those people are background they have been discredited since. who is currently in these positions of powers that went to twitter, went to facebook? i think that is the truth to your point, who is the head of the snake? these people are still in government, i think we deserve to know. >> steve: maybe. >> lawrence: maybe they retired since. new administration came into office. but i think the american public does deserve to know. and if this went all the way to the top, the leaders in charge know what was going on. we don't know that yet. >> steve: ultimately it benefited joe biden and it hurt, obviously, donald trump because of we saw public opinion polls after the election where people said. >> carley: i wish i could change my vote. >> steve: i wish i would have known that because maybe i wouldn't. i think the the number was close

to 10%, 15%. so it could have. >> lawrence: enough to sway an election. >> carley: elon musk tweeted something else a little bit ago. he says sorry for the delay. we are tentatively launching verified on friday next week. gold check for companies. gray check for government. blue for individuals, celebrity or not. and all verified accounts will be manually authenticated before check activated. painful but necessary. but this is his checkmark plan that's going to go into action very soon. he delayed it because he didn't want people to get checks and then pretend to be the other people. >> steve: famously, a couple of weeks ago, jesus, an account with the name jesus was verified. like that was really jesus. it was not jesus. i don't think. >> carley: you have to have clarity in your profile to be

invited. joe biden, maybe not? >> well, i think it's notable reminder that joe biden's policies remain very unpopular across the country and especially in places like georgia, where families are struggling to make ends meet. probably going to have to trim their sales for their christmas gift-giving budget. worried about crime in their streets and our southern border. barack obama remains the most popular and powerful figure within the democratic party. in some way joe biden remains his understudy and rung his third term. it's not surprising the democrats are deploying former president obama. i would rather have on our side governor brian kemp, the most popular and successful elected leader in georgia and i know governor kemp is rolling up his sleeves to help elect herschel walker, this is more about controlling the senate, it's about who is going to represent georgians in the united states senate for the next six years. >> carley: senator, how do you think this race is gonna play out? because herschel walker under performed in the general
