>> molly: are you ready for the return of mask mandates? it could happen with cold and flu season and the lingering threat of covid and rsv in kids. los angeles county are recommending masks. a new report from the federal services department say mandates may be necessary to protect people from long covid. but a "new york post" op-ed says return of a mask mandate? never. if you're worried about giving long covid wear a long mask but enough with society-wide restrictions. biden is right. the pandemic is order. it is time to let people decide
8:16 am
for themselves. >> certainly a lot of discussion and debate about the possible return of facemasks when it comes to covid. you mentioned los s county. their local rates of infection for covid have gone up by more than 50% since the start of november so in los angeles county, officials are calling and strongly recommending that people do wear facemasks now in public places. now since covid is being joined by the flu and by rsv there are many medical professionals who say it is time for some people to consider returning to wearing facemasks. >> true that covid is just smoldering along but now we have rsv and we have influenza surging in most of the country. those are also very, very serious viruses. so it seems a reasonable thing to do if you are going out in public, put back that mask. and do some social distancing.
8:17 am
this may be the time to rent the movie rather than going to the movie. >> the department and human services commissioned a study where it says it recommends that people begin to wear masks in public again. it did not call, though, for a mandate to wear those masks and health professionals are pretty keen making the distinction between the voluntary wearing masks again and that mask mandate. a big difference between the two. >> the mask is a very polarizing way to go given everything we've been through the past couple of years. a mask mandate is a different thing. it is different than voluntarily wearing a max. >> in the u.s. about 40,000 reported cases of covid infection every day over the last two weeks. a 7% increase. molly, back to you. >> molly: folks with strong feelings about those mandates. thank you, steve harrigan. major mixed messaging from the

white house on the threat of a crippling rail strike early next month in the middle of the holiday season. one of the biggest railroad unions voted this week to reject a biden administration-brokered deal. the fourth union to do so. listen to what president biden said about it yesterday. >> can you talk about the hold-up? >> president biden: i can't >> have you been in touch with both parties? >> president biden: my team has been in touch with all the parties and i have not directly engaged yet because they are still talking. >> molly: that is in direct contradiction to what the white house said earlier this week. >> the president is involved directly. i don't want to get into details at this time. he has been involved. we said -- i just said the president has been directly involved. he has been in touch. i said this is the third time i'm saying he has been directly

involved. >> molly: railroads haul 40% of the nation's freight, $2 billion worth of good a day. it could mean loss of jobs and force nearly half a million more trucks onto the road to pick up all the slack. marc thiessen, former white house speech writer and "washington post" columnist and fox news contributor joins us to wear in. thank you for being here on friday after thanksgiving. there is really no way to downplay the potential impact on americans if this rail strike actually happens. potentially as soon as december 5th. railroads, 40% of good, domino effect would hit the food, farmers, energy, christmas shopping. look at the beautiful holiday lights in new york. president biden has given a mixed message on that says he is not directly engaged yet. is this a big test of his clout and does he need to become more
8:20 am
engaged personally? >> he has been directly involved in creating the conditions that would make this an absolute disaster for the economy if it happened. president biden thanks to his american rescue plan has unleashed already record inflation and record supply chain crisis. this would create a massive supply chain crisis on top of that. it would require 467,000 trucks to make up for the lost rail capacity. the problem is that truck capacity doesn't exist because of the biden's inflation and the supply chain crisis. thanks to biden we have the worst labor shortage in american history. 10 million unfilled jobs in this country. the trucking industry is short 80,000 long haul truckers right now. so if you throw on top of that the requirement for another half a million trucks every day out there, they can't meet that capacity. so what that means is the capacity is not going to get filled. it will mean that prices will go up. if you wonder why your grocery
8:21 am
prices are so high one of the reasons is the shortage of truckers. now take away the rail on top of that and it will go through the roof. >> molly: there are concerns about the diesel supply. another side of this congress has stepped in before on this issue. is it going to fall to congress, the divided congress to openly prevent this strike? >> you know, i think it's really presidential test not a congressional responsibility. when ronald reagan fired the air traffic controllers because they threatened to go on strike because that would have caused an unprecedented and unacceptable shutdown of american transportation system. here you have a situation where the president of the united states needs to really -- these unions are supposed to be his allies, right? i think there is a reason why the strike didn't happen before the mid-term elections. these are the president's allies. he needs to start twisting arms and using his authority as president to force a deal and stop this from happening. it is ott him.
8:22 am
i will tell you something. the largest customer of the rail system is ups. so guess what? the g.i. joe and kung fu grip won't get to the store this christmas for your kids if there is a rail strike because -- food prices will go up. the housing industry will come to a grinding halt. we get all our canadian lumber by rail. so many effects that will ripple through the economy. it would be a debacle. >> molly: parents now are ordering presents now. back in august biden promised he would end the student loan repayment pause by december 31st. the courts -- he extended the repayment requirement going through june.
8:23 am
did he do this so courts could see many borrowers were able to make payments or doing what he can do because the records are halted? >> he is using the courts to extend it now. we don't want to make these people start paying back their loans when they could have been forgiven. he is creating false hope. this is an unconstitutional power grab. the united states doesn't have the authority to spend up to a trillion of taxpayer money without approval from congress. nancy pelosi said that last summer and her position until biden went ahead and did it and then she supported him. the power of the purse of congress and what he is using and the reason why he will lose in kousht. he is using a 2003 heroes act to make sure men and women called up to active duty didn't default on their loans because they had to leave their jobs and fight the terrorists. he is using that law says a war

or national emergency. he is saying the covid national emergency allows him to give a benefit that was intended for people risking their lives for our country to people who took out loans they can't afford. no way the courts will approve that. it is an act of stolen valor and quite frankly an assault on the constitution, article one, of congress. >> molly: the "wall street journal" board said who knows if or when borrowers will have to make payments again? the biden administration is touting the improving economy and job markets coming back. a great query. your thoughts. >> he is a little bipolar on this. he goes to the courts and says you have to give us the authority to lift title 42 because the pandemic emergency doesn't require it anymore. the pandemic is over for illegal migrants at the border but then he uses the pandemic emergency as the pretext for spending a

so far they have said there is no obvious connection. maybe the most interesting connection or similarity is that when travis and jamie lynn were attacked at 3:00 a.m. while sleeping by a stranger with a long knife, there was another person in the house who was ignored by the killer. in that case it was a man going to dog sit for the couple the following day as they were about to go on vacation. two roommates on the first floor were ignored by the killer here in idaho. no connection made at this point. kaylee goncalves's father said police told him the killer targeted just one of the four victims prior to his rampage. if true it would mean the other three victims were collateral damage and police addressed reports that kaylee had a stalker. >> kaylee stated she may have had a stalker. detectives have been looking into this and at this point

around 36 or 37%. that's why raphael warnock doesn't want joe biden there. he won't help warnock in the slightest if he comes. this president has earned his unpopularity. every single area of our lives are worse off than what they were two years ago. i want to push back a little bit and just talk about in terms of herschel walker. he is a phenomenal candidate. an icon. he is a man i think people in georgia love and respect. i think that he is going to win that race whether it's framed nationally or locally. he certainly is the right person for this position. >> molly: one of the big aspects i want to hit on. democrats have spent more than

$20 million in radio and tv ads. a phenomenal amount of money poured into the race. it can happen when you have an all eyes runoff election. with the balance of power in the senate not so much being discussed anymore, why is there so much money being put here, dan? >> well, a few things. one, i think the race has the attention of the entire country. when you can capitalize and folks on one state it makes it higher. democrats have a large national grassroots donor base, small donors who make a big difference. >> molly: i want to make sure nick has a final thought, too. >> i think it shows just how desperate the democrats are. they want to win this because they know that the map does not look good for them in 2024. if they do not win this seat,
