molly: on monday, trees for troops their fedex partner will kick off their mission to spread holiday cheer to milling and chant military members and families but this year over 15000 christmas trees will be delivered to service members all around the world. with us today is rick the christmas spirit foundation executive director and marvin hill as well a fedex freight
10:52 am
project manager. boy do they have a big job. rick, i want to start with you get a couple questions so people can get a better idea of how this organization works. how many trees have been distributed overall? what is the plan for this holiday season? >> , thanks molly. the foundation of course is a 5o1c3 charity trees and for troops is one of our programs a first program was started way back in 2005. this will be our 18th consecutive year of doing the trees for troops program with our partner fedex freight. this year we are projecting about 15 and half thousand trees. they start picking them up monday morning. those are going to be distributed to 84 total bases in the u.s. we are quickly approaching 300,000 total trees in the 18 years we have been doing the program. see 11 its remarkable effort filled with christmas spirit. who are the people who come
10:53 am
forward to make this happen? who donates the trees? tell me a little bit about the bases and what happens with the trees arrive? >> the main driver of the program's tree farmers. american farm families that grow christmas trees. we have a little over 400 tree farms across 24 states that participate and provide the trees. many of them also let customers donate trees. a lot of them also work with community groups so at local vfw, local american legion post, local businesses they get together and really get involved in a community and put together all the trees are going to donate. and then the coordination of course comes from getting all of those trees from all of those different areas gathered together. we are going to pick up from a total of 54 places around the country but then they have to be distributed out to the 84 bases but that all has to happen in about a ten day period. [laughter] >> it's incredible do not want to leave marvin out. fedex you are kind of the
10:54 am
reindeer. you're making this all happen getting things all across the country. how does that work? how hard is this job? >> well, molly thank you for having me as well but this is extremely hard. but just because it's hard don't mean we don't do it. fedex freight is committed to this. we want to show our appreciation for our brave men and women in uniform and their families. because we know they are serving in uniform, serving our military as a family business but gives us an opportunity to be a part of their christmas. how do we do it? lots of planning, months of planning. lots of collaboration within many of the departments within fedex freight. whether it be our operations department, transportation, engineering, communications, culture initiatives and citizenship, inclusion in citizenship is well as hundreds of volunteers giving their time
10:55 am
and energy to make this happen. it is incredible. molly: and rick, when these trees arrive at the bases how are they received? are the troops happy to see them? is this part of how we can help to ensure they feel appreciate over the holidays when they're making so many sacrifices to keep all of us safe? >> yes, when the common questions we get is once the trees arrive on a base, how do you decide who gets one? the answer is we don't. each of the bases decides how, when, where and who. it varies in different loca locations. but the nice thing about it is we also produce a special tag that gets attached to every tree there's a space on that tag for everybody involved in the program to write a personal message. it could be something simple from just simply thank you for your service. or sometimes people write in honor of or in memorial of.
10:56 am
but when the family or the active-duty person gets the tree, they get the tag also. it has eight personal message it really let's them know just how many people were involved and making that happen. it makes them feel supported. it makes them feel appreciated. omission of our foundation is to improve christmas spirit. we know this program does that because they get that message of support and they get a special treat and it helps improve the christmas spirit, they tell us that it does. we know we are having a positive impact on people's lives. molly: absently, thank you for joining us to talk about this incredible program for i know a lot of americans wanted they can help out they can they go to trees for troops.org for more information on this incredible program for thank you both for joining us here as we are heading into the holiday season now, merry christmas for that is all for us this hour, "fox news live" continues with arthel and brian coming up.
