8:01 am
with this time last year. and again the pediatric care is the focus here. as for the flu, the positive case rate in the past week is 15%. the same period last year that number was less than 1%. we knew coming out of a pandemic, putting people in bigger spaces and going back to our lives, things were going to pop. a recent health and human services report recommends wearing a mask. some people are worried it could lead back to the mandates, though. it is a slippery slope and we know it. our own dr. marc siegel. >> masking may have some value but mandates cause tremendous harm. we have been over and over that. by the way, as soon as the mandates flew away and hhs should pay attention. as soon as they got rid of the mandates people stopped wearing masks all together, which meant
8:02 am
they were being forced. i think public education is the key here, not mandates. >> harris: fox news senior correspondent steve harrigan is on it for us. >> challenges on multiple fronts from what is being called a triple of covid, flu and rsv. health officials and the government are stressing the importance of vaccine. in different parts of the country there is talk about a return to wearing facemasks. >> we do have three infectious respiratory viruses all out there. the good news is we have two highly effective vaccines against two of them. >> as far as covid goes across the u.s. hospitalizations and death rates are either flat or declining. but in los angeles county, the average daily case rate is up 70% over the past month alone. officials there are now strongly recommending that people wear
8:03 am
masks indoors public places. this is not a mask mandate but a step in that direction away from the previous policy of personal preference. you talked about rsv as well. that is surging especially among small children 0-4. symptoms are often flu-like. most children recover in a week or two. some need treatment ought the hospital beds are in short supply. >> in some regions of the country the hospital system for pediatrics are at the point of being overwhelmed when you have all the intensive care beds occupied. >> rsv, the -- it would free up funding and allow hospitals to be more flexible dealing with what they call a crisis. harris, back to you. >> harris: steve, thank you very much. the outgoing white house covid advisor, dr. anthony fauci, is
8:04 am
on his unending media blitz. you know he leaves the end of next month. he is now making the interview rounds before stepping down and his take on the current state of the covid pandemic. take a watch. >> if you look at where we were a year ago at this time when omicron started to surge, we were having 800 to 900,000 infections and 3,000 to 4,000 deaths. so it is much, much better than it was but it is not at a level low enough where we should feel we're done with it completely. because we're not. >> harris: don't tell the president of the united states that because he told us more than a month ago that covid pandemic was over. jason chaffetz fox news contributor, former republican congressman of utah. jason, first of all, if the white house could get its messaging straight, there might not be a need for us to be entering the fall season without a really copious plan.
8:05 am
that's what we were asking for in may. >> the cdc has lost the trust of the american public. mixed messages and messages that contradict what somebody else is saying and didn't do the studies required along the way. wouldn't it have been nice if two years ago they had actually done a study on masks, what works and what doesn't work. they never did that. i think they knew it really did work and didn't want to have the answer. it is a guess but mal practice by the cdc to not do it and you have personified in dr. fauci somebody the country does not believe in. they just don't believe this guy at this point. >> harris: that's my confusion, you know. why not give somebody else the job? why not move forward? why not bring in another team of doctors since our little ones are getting hit by rsv? why not bring in people we no could generate trust based on
8:06 am
science and why not reach across the aisle where politics don't matter. we know they matter to dr. fauci. >> well, that's right. i think joe biden, president biden missed a huge opportunity to put a fresh face out there to engage the public, build back that trust. but no, they put out somebody who is more interested in being on the cover of "vanity fair" than he is in doing the job. he had time to write a book during the pandemic. i don't understand why they continue to put him out there as the lead face on this. so many people -- millions of people don't believe him. that's the problem. when you have years where he got it wrong, now when you actually need him, nobody believes him. >> harris: look, what i'm about to show you is china in lockdown. perennial lockdown. when you tell people to start doing things that we did at the beginning of the pandemic before we had vaccines or any of the like, when we tell people to start doing them again,
8:07 am
particularly in democrat areas, it is just above the waterline of mandating. here is a video of what is happening in china. this is exactly mandating. it is a communist nation and people are locked from the outside in in their homes. now they're reacting to the newly-imposed draconian lockdowns. this is something we rarely see. people protesting in china. >> yeah, to be that bad. these people are literally putting their lives on the line. you know how the chinese treat somebody who suggests dissent is okay. this happens in multiple cities simultaneously. i think the chinese have a real problem. welding locks so people can't get out. people are starving and they can't feed their families. look, we're nowhere close to that. we should be better and smarter than this. but the cdc has people we don't
8:08 am
trust. i want to know about his finances of dr. fauci and the dual role he takes in taking income potentially as royalties from some of these vaccines. put a fresh face in there, president biden, and do it right now. >> harris: fauci better get his story straight and expert opinion straight on the origins of covid in particular that killed more than 1 million americans and millions across the world. republicans are gearing up for a string of investigations when they hold the house majority in january. covid no doubt on top of their list. let's watch. >> very much in favor of legitimate oversight, absolutely. i have testified before congress, given the 38 years i've been director hundreds of times in many oversight hearings. they have clearly politicized it. i'm not political at all period.
8:09 am
that's ridiculous. this is a public health issue. i would be more than happy to explain publicly or otherwise everything that we've done. >> harris: he is offer to explain. why hasn't he done it yet? dr. fauci spent years dismissing the theory that covid could have originated from a lab leak. now quite the about face. >> we keep a completely open mind as to what the origin is. we have to investigate every possibility because this is too important not to do that. >> harris: look, you were a former chairman of the oversight committee. i don't know how it works. does he need to lawyer up? >> he probably does need to lawyer up. he says he will voluntarily come before congress. we'll see what it's like. if he gets a subpoena, he ising to have to come testify and probably multiple times in front of the house where republicans have the majority.
8:10 am
for him to suggest he is not political is laughable. he is a political monster. he also i think again per son files the idea that if you want term limits on members of congress, which i support, you also need to have term limits on these people at the upper echelons of government. for him to sit in the same seat for 38 years and become a multi-millionaire something does not add up here. the highest paid employee in all of federal government. will go into retirement making more than $4 hundred thousand a year. congress is going to want to know about a lot of things and he hasn't been forthright about the origins of covid. he could have suggested answers and opened up and given this information but now i think congress will have to pry it from his hands. >> harris: that is really interesting what you said term limits. i don't know exactly how it would work. 38 years in a position that gives us a situation where he now is among the least -- the

most public and least trusted public person in america, among them, like i said, is really excusable, right? could we have excused him? just stage right. >> senior-most positions allow people to get in involvement and serve. be in there for five years and let everybody else have the position. that would be about right. he is not the only person that can do this job and he has been there far, far too long. >> harris: he is leaving in 30 days. somebody is going to do it. >> he has a book tour, come on. >> harris: he is making a lot of our money. the biden administration's energy policies again. the white house is now pulling back sanctions and making a new fresh deal with a dirty player, venezuela, in the hopes of lowering gas prices here at home. the move gives the second largest u.s. oil company, chevron, the go ahead to operate

inside venezuela for the first time in years. the united states had imposed sanctions to punish brutal dictator maduro. critics are losing their voices shouting at this one. >> i don't know why we're going to communist dictatorships and begging opec plus to increase production when we have the energy here in america to get the job done. >> this administration won't allow us to drill in the united states. not in texas or oklahoma, not in alaska, not west virginia but we can pump oil from venezuela. it makes absolutely no sense. it has put america last energy policy. >> you see the biden administration make decisions which hurt americans through the continuing process here of weakening america and finding a way to help dictators. >> harris: americans have to pay attention to this. when they open their energy bills this winter, we'll get some ideas of why that is.
