odds. we thought about the cause, and something that we would contribute uniquely to that that we felt called to do. that is what led us to run for congress, for governor, and lead us to join the ticket in 2016, just a sense of calling. that's what we will try to discern at this time in our lives, not only talking to kids, but talking to friends. as i traveled across the country in the last few years, listening to the american people, high-level ronald reagan said one time. he said "the american people have a funny way of living you know if they want you to be president." left her neck so we will be listening to people around the country, hopefully following that. >> >> martha: how do you know? he wanted to ask you a question about your faith. how do you know that's god calling you? everywhere you go, people love you, democrats love you because you are nice, wholesome, a good

person who does the right thing, and you are honest. they might not like your politics, but they like who you are and your character. how do you decipher if they are saying "i like you," or "we want you to run it" i'm obviously not a politician and have never been through that, so how do you know that's your calling or what you're supposed to do? >> vice president pence: i have a fundamental distrust of my own ambition. i write about that in the book. my own ambition has caught me up in political decisions that i regretted very early in my career. also very wary of praise. the bible says "a man is tested by the praise of his peers." we get a fair amount of it though on both sides. [laughter] you can go to twitter or anywhere else. don't look at my name, because you will find a wide range of opinions. for me, it more comes down to -- when karen and i will sort

through, pray for you, try and discern. the engine question: is there not a cause? i do believe that the opportunities that i have had to serve, relationships i've been able to build among congress, my time as vice president of the united states have been such a privilege for me. what will try to discern is whether there is a role for us to play. all i believe -- i believe that the american people long for leadership in 2024 that you don't make could unite the country around our highest ideals, but i could take us back to the policies that worked in the trump/pentz administration that i chronicle in great detail, and our country, making it stronger, more prosperous, our liberties more secure than ever before. i also believe that people i've been hearing from around the

country want to see us get back to the civility, the respect that the american people show up one another every day. once you get a little bit out of politics as i have been in the last two years, you realize that while our politics are divided, not sure that the american people are as divided as our politics. people of all kinds of different views find a way to get along in this country just about every day in business, work, worship. if we see a place in that where we can offer that new brand of leadership that is still grounded in that conservative agenda, we will not hesitate. >> martha: will god made it crystal clear for you to be vice president when the plane broke down in the present got to know you. [laughter] speak of speak of vice president you mentioned this title and your testimony as well as esteemed service to the white house. tell us about how this title plays a theme in the book.

>> vice president pence: the oath of office i took as vice president, governor and the congressman -- is to support and defend the constitution of the united states. i sought to do that every day. i prayed for the grace to do that every day, but that also ends with a prayer. history records that it was when george washington took the first oath of office as president that he out of the four words "so help me god," and ever since, it's been a part of that oath of office. as we came to the end of the book and thought about the role, my decision to put my faith in jesus christ, and it's played a role in my family -- we have tried to play out that faith in our public life. it seemed like that title lend itself to the cover, because it spoke of the oath we took, and oath i sought to keep all the way to the end of my service.

but also, i hope -- gives credit where credit is due, and people that read the book know that i have been blessed with an incredible family, blessed with friends and supporters around the country, but it has been god's grace that has sustained us every step of the way. >> thank you very much. we will be right back with more "outnumbered" in a moment.home those loans are not cheap. neither are cash advances from your credit cards. call newday. you may not realize it, but one of the lowest cost ways to get money is to use your va home loan benefit. the newday 100 va loan lets you borrow up to 100% of your home's value at low re-fi rates instead of high credit card rates. and that makes a huge difference.
