morning. i'm bill hemmer. welcome to december. >> dana: i'm dana perino and this is "america's newsroom." is it interesting to be this far into the investigation and then to get a different story all of a sudden. we'll cover all of this. an alarming lack of answers in the murder of twar idaho college students. more than two weeks they were found stabbed to death. the killer is still at large and police have yet to name a suspect and the central theory behind the investigation has been thrown out the window. >> bill: authorities told us the killings were not random and that the killer must have had a fixation with one of the victims. police are walking that back. detectives do not currently know if the residents or occupants were specifically targeted. end quote. >> dana: that is very scary and frustrating for a community on edge for weeks. the police chief is defending his department. >> we're trained very well. we're also aware when we need to

bring in the idaho state police and f.b.i. or a.t. f. >> there are no secrets in a small town. how is this a secret? >> that's why we'll continue to push through this investigation until we can uncover that secret. what i can offer is that we are going to work continuously and we'll provide as many answers as we can. >> bill: here is where we think things stand now. not clear whether it was targeted or random. forensic results are coming back in from the crime lab. authorities have towed five cars from the crime scene and processing them for evidence. >> dana: fox news obtaining unseen photos of one of the victims. here is maddy. some of these photos take days before she was killed. her father speaking exclusively to fox news on the state of the investigation. >> the always just hope for a resolution to something like this so we can start moving on in our life.

i just have to hope and trust that they are doing as good a job as anyone could do on this. it seems like they should have figured it out by now but i don't know. >> dana: christina coleman is reporting live from moscow, idaho. what do you hear this morning? >> we're all just wrapping our heads around this new twist in the investigation, this major walk back from police. as you mentioned they said multiple times that this attack was targeted. now they have -- they are saying differently. in an update last night they said we spoke with the prosecutor's office and identified it was a communication detectives do not currently know if the residents or any occupants were specifically targeted but continue to investigate. this horrific attack at this house could have been at random apparently. unknown at this time. another unanswered questions more than two weeks into the

investigation. the police noted progress telling fox digital investigators are starting to receive forensic results from a crime lab. you can expect a lot of forensic evidence at the house. parents of three of the victims attended a candlelight vigil at the university in honor of the slain students. powerful moments. so many people showed up and holding hands and crying. the father of kaylee gonzalez reiterated his daughter and madison were close their whole lives up until the very end. >> we start looking at colleges and they came here together and they bid to get into the same apartment together. in the end they died together in the same room in the same bed and it is a shame and it hurts. but the beauty of the two always being together is something that

will comfort us. >> also as you all have mentioned the father of madison or maddy as her friends called her. her father expressed how difficult it is to wake up that his daughter, his only child, is now gone. >> have a lot of family support and friends that have been really great through this and my work has been really great. but, you know, every day is -- every time i wake up i remember what's going on and it's like mad -- i don't know how you ever get used to this. it is never going to go away. >> i would like to note we're here at the moscow police department and reached out to them yesterday for clarification on why they initially believed it was targeted and now why they

don't. and that's something that they are investigating. we also want to hear more about the resources that they apparently say they would like to have additional resources. we're here at moscow police waiting to hear back. >> dana: christina in the snowfall. >> bill: elon musk under fire from democrats over his handling of the platform. this after the white house said they would be keeping a close eye on his company. what's that about? hillary vaughn has the story live from capitol hill. good morning. >> good morning, bill. elon musk is promising twitter 2.0 will be more transparent and safer than the old twitter. some republicans are looking forward to that. they want answers about how and why some things were censored in the past on the platform. >> i think that elon musk knows that there are other stories that twitter was told to suppress that affected conservatives in a negative way and helped democrats.

this is something that's wrong. this is the government directly interfering with free speech especially conservative free speech and i think that elon musk wants to set the record straight. >> some democrats want the old twitter back. senator warren telling me she thinks elon musk is making content moderation decisions in a dark room by himself and more transparency in who is getting banned and who is not. they have threatened to stop an arbitrary approach to reinstating banned users. when it comes to freedom of speech some democrats say it's a gray area. >> do you think that users have a right to freedom of speech even if what they're saying is offensive or wrong? >> that's a tough one to judge. you can certainly see some things are way over the line. they have to be held responsible, these websites have

to be held responsible for publishing them. >> apple ceo tim cook will be on capitol hill today to meet with lawmakers. yesterday he met with elon musk and cleared the air about whether or not apple was considering kicking twitter off its app store. elon musk said he was assured it was never something on the table. >> bill: thanks, hillary. >> dana: the other thing that happened at the white house yesterday. i found this pretty stunning. look here. this is peter doocy pressing the press secretary on the white house twitter account. >> when will you delete the white house twitter account? >> why? >> you say you're keeping an eye on twitter because it might be a suitable platform. why use it? >> the president has always said and clear in his belief it is important social media platforms to continue to take steps to reduce hate speech and misinformation.

>> dana: they are in the same boat as cbs news which tried to get off twitter for 48 hours and came back saying wait, this is the tool everybody is using and they needed it. >> bill: a crafty way to ask the question. >> dana: very own peter doocy. >> bill: if you were at the podium you would say that's clever. >> dana: i would have been prepared for the question. the disgraced -- listen here. >> look, i screwed up. we messed up. a lot of what we ended up doing and focusing on was a distraction to some extent from one unbelievably important area that we completely failed on. and that feels pretty embarrassing in retrospect. >> dana: the disgraced founder of fcx making his first public appearance since the collapse of his company. he admitted his crypto platform did not do enough to safeguard

investor funds while denying any criminal wrongdoing for its downfall. we'll see about that. kelly o'grady is live in los angeles. >> listen, that sound bite that you played really shows the defense sam bankman-fried is mistake and no criminal intent. a couple of key takeaways from the interview. first he believes the u.s. platform is solvent and all american users will get their money back. curious given the bankruptcy filing on 1.2 billion in cash has been recovered. he shared that the donations came from profits. he said his personal fortune was tied up in the company and they are putting the blame on ftx sister company alameda research claiming quote, i wasn't running alameda and didn't know what was going on.

i haven't been making those decisions. that's hard to believe given he was the founder and owner of alameda. being incompetent doesn't mean you broke the law. he said i didn't try to commit fraud or knowingly co-mingle funds. he asked if he lied. >> i don't know of times when i lied. look, there are certain times when i talked as a representative, as a marketer and ftx in as compelling and exciting and optimist particulars. i don't know what are the risks involved? >> the bit of the defense that elizabeth holmes used. it came to criminal intent. charges in the case of ftx could come down to intent as well. >> dana: she just got 11 years.

in an interview yesterday they shouldn't have shut the story down saying this, quote, we didn't know what to believe. we didn't know what was true. there was smoke and ultimately for me it didn't reach a place where i was comfortable removing this content from twitter. but it set off every single one of my finely tuned apt alarm bells. that last part a reference to a russian hacking group. when the moderator asked him was it a mistake he said in my opinion, yes. this as elon musk he will expose details how and why the story got obstructed tweeting in addition this. the obvious reality has long term users know is twitter has failed in trust and safety for a very long time and interfered in elec elections. twitter 2.0 will be more transparent and even handed. republicans will investigate,

reconciliation report released by musk and twitter but shadow banning and censorship and discrimination against alternative voices on that platform for years. >> bill: we are having this discussion off the air. i have a new theory on the whole musk matter. i think he is going to war against the government and doing that because he had an edge in electric vehicles for a long time and if you look at the inflation reduction act, there are billions of dollars that will now go to competitors with tesla and that's part of his motivation now to root this out. what do you think about the basis or foundation of that? >> it would explain why the biden administration is having such a visceral response to everything we're seeing because why are so many people so upset when musk says i'll bring free speech back to the platform? what is their real objection. >> dana: they don't want trump on the platform even though they fundraise the heck off of it. i don't agree with the theory of the case there. i think that he is principled on

with me. do not know if the residents or occupants were specifically targeted. that seems a little nuanced or different to me. >> i agree it is nuanced. you can't get away from the fact that at the get go they said it was a targeted attack. we have to take the word targeted into account. i keep harkening back to the ted bundy case. the women, the girls, were targeted but he did not know them personally. they were targeted because they were the type, the look of the females he enjoyed killing. hence they were targeted in that aspect. also it's hard to imagine that four people were targeted. if this was targeted i would say it was one person. another thing, a lot of screaming going on by amateurs why don't we have a suspect? because this is an incredibly complex crime scene. it's not like you have mommy,

daddy and the cat and the dog. no. you've got five people living there. you have people in and out at all times of the day and night. it's a party house, there on the edge of the campus. we don't know how many people's dna is in there and it's mixed. just imagine, dana, going into a bloody crime scene. i have. you don't know if the blood is mixed with the roommates, with the defendant. you are looking for fingerprints and hair and fibers. if there was any kind of contact between the victim and the defendant. and not only that, as we wait for fingerprints or blood analysis, i'm hoping they are considering feno typing. a type of dna comparison and it gives you, for instance, the eye color, the blood type, the height of the defendant. that can be very valuable right now. >> dana: we just found out.

i understand all that dna evidence is now with the investigators? >> well, i would say contrary to public opinion, that that would be really quick because this crime scene multi-levels, multi-factors weighing into it. various points of entry. they had to go slowly. but three weeks, yeah, i could see that happening on the last multi-victim crime scene i handled, we processed for over two weeks and there were four murder victims. took a long time. >> dana: what do you think the next step is here? >> i think the next step is all in the lab. the fact that this is not targeted, dana, is very, very significant. if in fact that's true. because it makes it more a needle in a hay stack. if it's targeted you look at an

baltimore police investigating a string of carjackings and robberies centered around the ride sharing app. what do you need to know here? mark meredith with the disturbing details. >> good morning to you. multiple police say the robberies began over the weekend. suspect order a ride, carjack and ride the drivers and pick up passengers and rob them at gun point. baltimore police say they're working with the f.b.i. some arrests have been made. no details yet on who has been arrested or how many suspects are still out there. police say they aren't releasing a lot to protect their investigation. police say the suspects force victims to either go to atms or transfer money via cash apps. one fundraiser set up for a victim robbed on saturday. the man was convinced he was about to be killed. the attacks are horrifying. we're in close touch with law enforcement and working with them to send safety tips to riders in the baltimore area. this goes beyond baltimore.

handed. chris bedford, good morning to you. he is making news every day on this company. what's going to do with it? >> he is. he has brought a lot of excitement back to it. twitter hasn't been particularly exciting or come out with new technology for years and now it's the chatter of the town every day. what he is talking about here with election interference i'll be interested to see. talking about releasing some communications he has between the company and the federal government. this is something that has been largely overlooked or ignored in the conversation. the last six years talking about election interference and dys information talking about dark money and donations. if you're twitter and you suppress the story harmful to one party that can be considered interfering with elections. interfering with the information voters might have access to. if you're google and accused as the rnc is suing them for throttling emails and putting them to spam folders at a higher

said on twitter. an app he uses all the time. he is a bit of a wild card. elon musk is different from most any of us. he doesn't answer to anyone. he is the richest person in the world. he doesn't have as many masters as a lot of other folks do. much less predictable and a chaotic agent. the question on the app store, those are because apple has previously shown attacks in different group like parlor over its january 6th involvement when investigations later exposed facebook and twitter were used far more frequently people coordinating that riot at the capitol. there is reason to be distrustful of apple after they withdrew advertising after people started to leave twitter. a good thing for free speech to seem them not follow through with any of those rumors. >> bill: he doesn't answer to anyone. he doesn't have to answer to anyone. a good way to put it. chris bedford, nice to see you.
