texas, new york and virginia. >> president biden: ban assault weapons. ban them, ban them. i'll try to get rid of assault weapons. >> there is little indication that congress could pass anything in the lame duck session or even an appetite for it in the new congress as republicans take over the house. >> bill: thanks, griff, nice to see you in washington, d.c. thank you. >> dana: fox news alert. it's the dawn of a new era in washington for big tech. republicans are set to take control of the house and that means some of the most powerful names in silicon valley are about to face an entirely different reality. welcome in a new hour of "america's newsroom." i'm dana perino, good morning. >> bill: that's the car we took to work today. i'm bill hemmer, good morning. we're back at the ronald reagan library in simi valley, california, an hour north of los angeles. the reagan forum where you have great minds from all over the defense industry that come
7:01 am
together and get and talk about policy and they talk about what and how america can best manage those policies. >> dana: it is going to be super interesting and we'll have more on that later this hour and through the weekend. >> bill: that 707 behind us is the landmark of the entire library as we sit high above the valley here in seemy, california. it is foggy outside but we're optimistic we'll see the sun at some point. democrats and twitter ceo musk feuding over his take over of the social media giant. tiktok also under fire as china uses it to collect data on you the american people and interfere with american elections. tim cook is in the hot seat after the company limited a key file sharing feature that hobbled the protestors in china over the last week. cook yesterday did not want to answer questions. >> hi, mr. cook. do you support the chinese people's right to protest?
7:02 am
do you have any reaction to the factory workers that were beaten and detained for protesting covid lockdowns? do you regret restricting air drop access that protestors used to evade surveillance from the chinese government? >> dana: hillary vaughn was asking the good questions and jim jordan is set to chair the judiciary committee. let's go to hillary vaughn on fox business live on capitol hill. you didn't get any answers yesterday. >> no, i did not, dana. but apple really is not the only company that has come under scrutiny for their coziness with china. tiktok now has as well because new reports that china is using tiktok to push videos attacking u.s. politicians and forbes reports that these tiktok accounts are being run by the
7:03 am
propaganda arm of the chinese government. they have gained millions of followers and tens of millions of views. china is getting what they want, a captive audience to push videos that attack u.s. politicians to drive divisiveness without clearly disclosing the people pushing the videos are affiliated with the chinese government. tiktok says they're working on a policy to fix this problem but say it is not an issue unique to their platform, similar content posted to youtube and facebook. they said we plan to introduce our state controlled media policy as part of our continued focus on media literacy as we previously confirmed the global roll-out includes china state media. china publishes on tiktok attacking politicians. they're looking to crackdown on tiktok. >> this is a danger to our kids, a national security threat and we don't want the chinese
7:04 am
communist party to control the most powerful media company in america. >> i'm very concerned about what's happening with tiktok and its parent company bytedance. the amount of propaganda and rm young americans. >> the version of tiktok in the u.s. looks different than for kids in china. if you're under 14 in china tiktok is limited 40 minutes a day. they see educational videos. what american kids get when they look at tiktok is comparable to digital fentanyl for children, dana. >> dana: it is a huge issue. we were just talking about that yesterday. more to come as well. for more on this let's bring in ohio congressman jim jordan ranking member of the house judiciary committee who met with tim cook yesterday. anything you can reveal about your meeting that will shed light on these questions? >> good conversations. tim cook and elon musk talked about the app store. the advertising issue has been cleared up as well.
7:05 am
i still have real concerns about china's influence on corporate america whether it's apple, nike, tiktok, or go broadly and talk about the nba, the influence it has on the nba and we should always remember that it wasn't just dr. fauci giving us all kinds of misinformation about covid. this thing started in china and they lied to us about that right from the get go. what we really need, frankly, is an administration to push back on china in all ways, like president trump did. he tried to ban tiktok and imposed tariffs and pushed back and tried to focus in a concerted focused way on limiting the influence china has. we aren't seeing that from this administration unfortunately. >> bill: one thing i find out about tim cook. he is direct and straight shooter and knows where he wants to take his company. you just mentioned tiktok and we just talked about it. if you crack down on tiktok and another app will pop up somewhere. did he address what he thinks
7:06 am
might be the best strategy if these concerns are still out there and growing? >> we talked about it. i think there are some broad concerns in that area. the biggest takeaway for me, bill, is think about this. how is what tiktok is doing, how is that much different than what our government did two years ago october just days before the most important election we have, the presidential election when f.b.i. people went to facebook and said hey, be on the lookout for russian disinformation and that led to the suppression of information we, the people, are entitled to have when we're making the most important decision we make who will be our commander-in-chief. that conversation happened at the same time 51 former intel officials sent out a letter that said this hunter biden story has all the earmarks of a russian misinformation operation. it wasn't. you had our government influencing social media companies to impact information americans could see right in the
7:07 am
days before the most important election we have. this is how it all relates in my judgment and we'll look into all of it. >> dana: there will be a lot more transparency in the tech company partly because of the republicans taking over and the hearings you'll have. another thing that's happening. an investigation that is into the politization of the f.b.i. and you are threatening to subpoena a former f.b.i. official jill san born because she backed out of a promise to do an interview with you? >> she had committed. she left the justice department and committed to an interview today. supposed to start at 10:00 today and then she backed out on it. when the new congress forms we'll pursue that further. and we are going to talk to her because whistleblowers, f.b.i. agents came to us as whistleblowers have given us her name saying this is an important we need to talk to. there are lots of folks we want to talk to. we sent a letter yesterday to
7:08 am
n n n n nina -- you can look at all kinds of issues, the hunter biden issues. a number of people we need to talk to. you can't stop this kind of behavior and get the politics out of the justice department if you don't expose what they did. >> bill: they sent you a letter. part of it reads the f.b.i. has strong procedures in place to promote accountability when an f.b.i. employee strays from their obligations including employee actions that create the appearance of political, social or other bias. do you think you'll make headway on this or will it be a two year slog with no answers in the end? >> we'll push. it is part of our duties to get to facts and truth to the country. the same f.b.i. that told us chris wray's comment in a hearing was you can sleep well at night knowing we fixed the
7:09 am
fisa process and shortly after that we got a second report from the inspector general that showed all kinds of problems with that particular process. when the f.b.i. sends us that kind of letter i don't put stock in it. i put stock in 14 agents who have talked to us and took whistleblower status while we're in the minority. that's how bad the situation is. they come to us because they know they can trust us and because the problem is so bad. one of them said it is rotted to the core at the washington field office in the f.b.i. that's what i put stock in. i've never seen that in my time in congress when you have that many agents willing to come forward and say this is how bad it has gotten. never forget the first one who came forward was on the school board issue and they said they're putting tags and putting designation on moms and dads ratted out by the neighbor on the snitch line that merrick garland set up for going to a school board meeting to advocate for their kid. f.b.i. investigated over two dozen parents.
7:10 am
none charged with a crime but the chilling impact on speech in this country. that's the big problem. >> bill: i get it. we'll see how and when those answers come. >> dana: congressman, thank you. >> bill: thank you, the republican from ohio, jim jordan. >> i think the people made a conscious decision we'll get the money out. if there is fraud you'll chase it later. that is not an acceptable model. what we found was basic steps to determine identity weren't undertaken. i can't rule out that the fraud could be not only in the tens of billions but maybe as some have estimated upwards of $100 billion. >> bill: this will blow you away. maybe it's higher than that. a report revealing how easy it might be to swindle covid relief funds. think of all the money that went out so quickly. 800 billion in paycheck protection loan were granted to 12 million borrowers. the tech firms in charge of reviewing applications were not able or unwilling to provide

oversight. mark meredith will go very deep on this story. what did you find out? >> we sure are. this new report will stun a lot of people. it essentially shows tens of billions of dollars of taxpayer money, your money going to people and companies who had no business ever getting help in the first place. so when the pandemic forced the country to shut down in march 2020 congress created the paycheck protection program. idea was to let businesses apply to loans to keep employees on payroll. a new report show many of the financial technology firms responsible for validating loan information failed to do any basic fact checking and the people hired to screen applicants had little to know training on what to do. instead they were basically told to approve loans and move on. congressional investigators write many companies appeared to have failed to stop obvious fraud leading to the needless loss of taxpayer dollars. investigators obtained internal documents and emails within the
7:12 am
firms. one from blue acorn employees were told to approve loans even though they had fraud concerns. lawmakers are urging the department of justice to review their findings and they want to have people held accountable. justice officials say they're well aware of the problem and something they know they will have to look out for. investigators say unless changes are made this fraud will only continue especially as more of the government and banking businesses moved online. i was talking to one expert this morning. he didn't know if people should laugh or cry because the fraud was that obvious and somehow the money went out the door anyway. >> bill: i don't know how much we can crawl back. the pile is so high. mark, thank you. we'll be back with you on that. thanks. president biden proposing big changes to the democratic presidential primary calendar. could be a big deal if he gets his way. he wants the party to scrap iowa as the first voting state. they caucus in iowa.
7:13 am
and replace it with south carolina. that move would do away with a decades-long tradition. iowa democrats facing criticism after a disastrous caucus night when we didn't get an answer as to who won. also worth pointing out south carolina paved the way for joe biden's nomination in 2020. he trailed way behind before the primary in south carolina went down. he says that state better reflects the diversity of the electorate in the democratic party and see how it goes. >> dana: i think it's a big deal. all of the consequences and ramifications of it will become clear in the coming days because part of it is also -- i don't think it is a bad idea necessarily. mix it up a little bit and see how it goes if they can get a system going. maybe the republicans follow suit. part of the great thing for the media is everyone will be in iowa that's where everybody is. if you're spread out over five states trying to figure this out early on it will be a challenge but one that we'll be up to. i think the president will get his way.
7:14 am
>> bill: i think iowa democrats are ticked off. new hampshire isn't happy. republicans seem to be standing by the calendar and stick with the iowa caucus and go to new hampshire. >> dana: a theory that this idea starting with south carolina would help a kamala harris in the future and not hurt people. >> if joe biden goes for a second term. this would be the way to do it based on his performance from 2020. >> dana: indeed. you wouldn't want to repeat 2020. enough politics for now. hospitals in the nation's capital are out of beds. covid, rsv and flu taking hold as winter draws near. what doctors say is to blame for the latest surge. >> bill: health officials in los angeles warning a mask mandate could be reinstated as early as next week. what's that all about? california, caitlyn jenner joins us on set when she is here live. come on back here to simi valley, california, coverage

people are dying all over the place. and they are still harping on this one thing. you know, i think our public health director is kind of little a mini fauci. and the control that they have. i think it's about personal responsibility. if you want to wear a mask, wear a mask. we'll see where it goes. to mandate it and we're going backwards. >> bill: there was another story that broke late last night. part of your family. kanye west is in the news in a big way and elon musk had enough and suspended him from twitter last night saying i tried my best. despite that he violated a rule against incitement to violence. apparently he put up something with a swastika, star of david with a nazi swastika. what is going on? >> i've known kanye for a long

7:35 am
out? >> i think for starters, we can't forget that xana's funeral is today and keeping her family in our prayers as they prepare to lay her to rest. yesterday when i was at a restaurant i had the opportunity to talk to a professor. he says his classroom is halfway full. majority of those ones that decided not to return he got messages from their parents saying they don't believe it is safe for them. that's really the mood. but right behind us is the police station. it's no secret to people i've been doing interviews with them as well as family members and community leaders as well, this week is going to be a killer for two reasons. when you see the timeline continue to evolve, i think that becomes problematic in the investigation. it's one thing to withhold the information, but once you put information out there to the public, you have to stick to what you are putting out there. and, you know, i will just say this.
7:36 am
i've been talking with family members. they are extremely frustrated right now. they aren't getting straight answers but they're very supportive of law enforcement and feel they're at their mercy as it relates to the investigation. they don't want to go too far. you may have seen last week in the middle of our interview one of the fathers say look, i wanted to give you more information but they told me not to do it. so they are wanting the police to do their job but when you have desperation from these parents they want to use all their resources they can as well to get information. >> bill: yeah. lawrence, a couple of things here. kaylee's father was on with martha just yesterday. you mentioned the frustration. listen to this in his voice. i'll play it for you now. >> i don't like it one bit. i know the statements take hours and multiple individuals to review. it is not like this was something said on the side of the street within the first five hours of the case.
7:37 am
these guys are professionals. sat in a room and this is what they came out with. they keep coming out with statements that create more questions than they answer. >> bill: clearly you can understand his frustration. imagine what they are going through. here is what the police said, lawrence. we remain consistent in our belief it was a targeted attack but investigators haven't concluded if the target was the residence or occupants. can you parse that language more for us? >> so, i want to be careful because steve and i have become quite close. he is a grieving father and steve -- i will say this later on i will share more information with the public about this. but i ask questions for a reason and last week i asked him do you have a suspect or a person of interest? and they said they have neither. i also asked them do you all still feel like the public is at risk because you guys have labeled it as a targeted attack?
7:38 am
what i was asking do you think the killer will kill again or was it a motive you guys were able to come up with with your profile you believe he was trying to target one person or multiple people in that house? and they said to me last saturday we are sticking with it being a targeted attack. well now you have circulating statements going back and forth between the d.a., who is the chief law enforcement person in the town saying we don't know really yet and then the police coming back and saying we still believe that it is a targeted attack. that creates frustration with the parents. they have information as well that they've been able to turn over to law enforcement and they have withheld information. that suggests that perhaps it was a targeted attack based on what they've witnessed. so that's why we're here on the ground, guys. we won't let this case be swept under the rug. we'll continue to ask questions because this is new for this town. they haven't had a murder since 2015 and they deserve answers.
7:39 am
people are very scared here, as they should be. >> dana: we're glad you are there on the ground for us, lawrence. i know you will be on the air today and tomorrow night we'll see you on cross-country with lawrence jones at 10:00 p.m. eastern. thank you so much. >> bill: thank you, lawrence. there could be danger in the skies over the holiday season. will air marshals be pulled off a flight to protect the border? good question. we'll check it out. the reagan national defense survey showing politics is taking a big toll on trust in the u.s. military. the exclusive results live from the reagan presidential library in simi valley. we'll talk to one of the men in charge coming up next. >> the united states has an obligation to its citizens and to the people of the world never to let those who would destroy freedom dictate the future course of life on this planet.

>> dana: president biden's border crisis now hitting the airline industry. hundreds of air marshals are planning a mutiny against a mandate to deploy them to the border leaving flights unguarded. grady trimble is live at chicago's o'hare airport with more. this is getting serious. >> it is, dana. some of the passengers i've spoken to here are worried about this move. one group that represents the air marshals says it will make the friendly skies a lot less friendly and a lot less safe. the air marshal national council said it would leave 99 out of every 100 flights without a marshal on board. they could lose their jobs if they ignore the biden administration's assignment on the southern border. >> i travel a lot and i think

it's important we have those marshals where they need to be to protect people on the plane. it is stunning to me that they will be reallocated elsewhere. >> haven't had a lot of issues while playing. perhaps if i had more issues flying i would feel less safe. not really. >> the council claims marshals who have been deployed to the border are doing menial tasks not law enforcement officers. the tsa denies that. republican lawmakers are sounding the alarm. >> they are making sandwiches. they are taking trash out. they are doing projects that really just isn't necessary for them. i mean, this is shameful. >> for its part the department of homeland security tells fox business the suggestion that flights are being left unprotected is completely false. tsa takes its responsibility to secure the skies for the

have paid sick leave. but these rail workers and every worker in america deserves. that fight isn't over. i didn't commit we would stop just because we couldn't get it in this bill that we weren't going to stop fighting for it. i have supported paid sick leave for a long time. i will continue that fight until we succeed. i want to thank congress, democrats and republicans, for acting so quickly. i know this was a tough vote for members of both parties. it was tough for me but it was the right thing to do at the moment. to save jobs, to protect millions of working families from harm and disruption and to keep supply chains stable around the holidays. and to continue the progress we've made and continue to see on the economy. for months you couldn't look anywhere without seeing headlines screaming gas prices at the pump are up.

look, folks, gas prices are down. you barely hear anything about it now. they are continuing to go down. there is a lot more that is going to happen. they're down more than 1.50 a gallon since the summer and they continue to fall. our economy continues to grow. economic report, gdp is up more than it was previously thought. we continue to create jobs, lots of jobs. and today we've learned that the economy added 263,000 jobs in november. now we've now created 10.5 million jobs since i took office. more than any administration in history at this point in a presidency. and 750,000 of them are domestic manufacturing jobs made in america. unemployment rate remains near all-time 50-year low 3.7% and wages for working families. i want to say this again. wages for working families over the last couple months have gone
