them to be a necessity, they are a want and not in need. so if someone comes to our lot, they are looking for something that fits in their budget so they actually have room to buy food and all of the necessities that they normally purchase. not only to buy the tree but certainly to put presents under it. so, it has been a challenge. we have heard it from my would say come every other customer that comes on the lot says something to the effect, "we cannot believe trees have gone up as high as they have." we have to explain that believe it or not, christmas tree farmers have the same inflationary pressures that others do. >> ashley: how are you dealing with that? how is it affecting you from inflation standpoint? i'm sure come obviously that is the reason you have to raise prices. explain to us how you feel that and deal with that? >> yeah, we've had to take price increases across the board for most of our trees. if you think about where the

pressures come from, it is from things as simple as the strength we used to tie the tree on top of the rope, which has doubled the prices. we have boards and things that we use for traditional wood stands that were $5 last year, $10 this year. nails that were $0.50 last year that are $1 this year. fuel costs, obviously, certainly everywhere you can think of, it has been a challenge. so even the christmas tree season or christmas season, we have tried to take as few price increases as possible where we've had to pass that along certainly to our customers, unfortunately. >> ashley: you have to make a living so you have to keep up with the inflation in order to make a living. so we understand that. compared to last year where the before, what are sales looking at? are they up, down, the same? >> that is a great question. we have seen it. we believe it is the same. if i'm looking at my numbers
1:54 am
from last year year-over-year, we are down a little bit. but i would say we have seen sales that have been slower. it is taking longer throughout the day and certainly taking a lot more work on our end. we have had people that come here surprised by their prices and want to shop around a lot more than we have had in years past. it takes maybe a little bit longer to sell that christmas tree. certainly, as best as we can, we tried to meet the budget of everybody. but i think these coming two weeks will tell the tale. this is a time of year where people who have defined budgets and certainly are working with just a little bit of extra money in their pocket are looking to find either the christmas tree of their dreams or to do without. so, yeah. >> ashley: you know, gilbert, good luck to you. if anyone is watching this and you are in columbus, georgia,

area, go see kimi farms farms just to help him out. go get a little tree and put it somewhere in the house. we appreciate you getting up for us. we are praying for you and everybody, especially small businesses trying to make it right now, good luck. >> thank you so much. merry christmas to everybody. sure. >> ashley: this morning, we are remembering beloved actress kirstie alley who has died at the age of 71. >> griff: the award winner stood out in hollywood as someone not afraid to speak her mind and we will share the touching tributes in the next hour of "fox & friends first." >> democrats have plenty of people representing them in hollywood. they don't need a leader to represent them. so i will represent my way of life and my values and my pe people!
