the capital of kyiv at this hour. are ukrainians growing concerned over the latest developments in the east, jeff? >> yeah, sandra, and hello from a very foggy kyiv as you can probably tell. temperatures for the first time got above freezing, and because of that, more and more people are getting their power restored after this latest massive strike just earlier in the week. so that is sort of giving people a chance to catch their breath, at least here in the kyiv region. but the east, it's a more dangerous and desperate situations. that's where the fighting is taking place. both sides, russian and ukraines digging in, and beyond the fighting among people in uniform, civilians are also still being impacted. homes and businesses are being shelled in donetsk, and reports of a new missile strike in kharkiv, where at least one person was killed. however, as supplies dwindle in ukraine, help is on the way. the biden administration just

announced another $275 million aid package. and things like artillery rounds, and anti-drone defense systems. russian president vladimir putin once again blaming the west for what he calls his escalating the war. >> the potential for conflict in the world is growing and this is a direct consequence of the attempts by western to preserve their political, financial, military and ideological dominance. >> beyond the ongoing conflict, new numbers how dangerous ukraine is becoming, even long after this war. ukraine's president zelenskyy believes up to 65,000 square miles are endangered with mines, and this is something that we witnessed firsthand a few months ago. we were out with technicians as they tried to demine an area here in the kyiv region. not only dangerous work, but going on for a very long time.

>> john: we know from previous reports this hour that things are getting pretty stressful for the ukrainians trying to beat back the russians, suffering a lot of fatigue. but take a look at this map of ingals air base, ukrainian managed to attack a couple of times using drones, and made it through russian air defenses. ukraine is able to strike russia where it leasts expects it. >> they are targeting military facilities, unlike the russians who are targeting civilian infrastructure deliberately, and going after where the bombers are coming from launching the missiles that are hitting ukrainian cities. proportional, very justified. they are sending drones in from ukraine but then have spotters on the ground. >> john: how do you think it ends and when does it end? >> ukrainians are never going to give up.

they are going to fight for their country. as long as we keep giving them the arms, they will keep pushing the rushes back. putin will keep fighting as long as the russian elites allow him to, but it's more costly for russia. i think some time next year they will rein him in because it's too costly for russia. >> sandra: one of russia's close friends and another u.s. foe that has the pentagon concerned. china. u.s. intelligence right now keeping a close eye on what that communist country is doing in outer space. analysts say china appears to be hyper focused on building military up for the final frontier and could pose a threat to our nation's assets. greg, what more are officials saying about this? >> basically they are saying the final frontier could be the new front line between the u.s. and china.

china launching rockets, building capabilities that could put much of what the u.s. has in space at risk, so says the head of the space command in comments earlier today, general james dickinson voted they say outer space as a very important piece of its military environment. the u.s. is concerned about is china testing of anti-satellite capabilities, that is their ability to shoot down u.s. spacecraft. not only a strategic danger but a lot of hazardous debris floating above. china is now the only other country to launch its own citizens into space, just this week they established their own manned space station, slated to stay in orbit, keeping an eye on things from above for the next 15 years. president xi's secret space program is run by the military, people's liberation army. that rules out cooperation with nasa and undercores the

their way of getting around saying shadow banning. because you know, from the twitter files last night we learned they used this tool to actively suppress not just accounts but ideas from trending, and you had dan, charlie, the files revealed had been visibly filtered. but directly contradicts how previous management always maintained no shadow banning happened. i want to share a tweet from founder jack dorsey, dug back to 2018 and he said this. we don't shadow ban, and we certainly don't shadow ban based on political viewpoints. what last night's drop reveals, though, twitter was deciding what important discussions were allowed wide reach. these decisions were happening at the highest level. the platform actually having a secret council, including dorsey. one filtered individuals was a

>> well, i would say that kyrsten sinema and i are similar in our backgrounds in the sense that we always have been independent-minded, and democrats more than republicans, but really independent-minded, and so just what she just said, she's doing what is right for her, but she's also doing, i think, what will give hope to the largest group of voters and the fastest growing political party in america, which is independents. 42% of the voters in the country said they were independent and 30%, give or take, were republicans or democrats. so, it's also a statement against the lock step that too many members of the senate and house are in with their party and their parties become obstacles to solving problems. my situation was different because though i was an independent-minded democrat, i was challenged by a left wing

democrat in the 2006 primary, all about the iraq war and i lost. but i had the right under connecticut law to run as independent and with a lot of support from republicans, independents and i won. i think kyrsten may be saying here to some of the people on the left, to the democratic party talking about challenging her in a primary next year, hey, come on, i'm ready, and not only that, you want to toss me out of the democratic party, i'll run as an independent which is probably where most people are in arizona today. so i think it's a great move, and good for political system. two major parties have to be shaken up. >> sandra: to your point where arizonans are today, this was the statement from the democratic party in that state after that big announcement, saying sinema may not be registered as independent but has shown she answers to corporations and billionaires, not arizonans.

senator sinema's registration means nothing if she does not listen to constituents. reaction to chuck schumer on the switch, interesting one, he said she asked me to keep her committee assignments and i agreed. kyrsten is independent, how she's always been, similar to what you just said, senator. i believe she's a good and effective senator. i'm looking forward to a productive session in the new democratic majority senate. we will maintain the committees, xer sighs subpoena power and clear nominees. she asked to keep her complete assignments, my next question, what really is going to change in the senate as a result of this, senator? >> it honestly depends on senator sinema, but you are right. here is the dilemma. even though two major political parties are not ordained in the constitution, not required by law, but they have established what one political scientist

calls a duopoly, two-party duopoly as our politics. and as independent as sinema is and i was, if you want to be helpful to your state and be on committees that matter in senior positions, you got to work through one of the parties. so she did what she did, but i think she's even freer to do what she wants to do on given issues since she was before, and i think this is also kind of a message to mitch mcconnell and her republican colleagues. you know, you think i want to -- i might support something you are interested in, talk to me. i'm not -- i'm not a robot democrat, i'm willing to support stuff that i think is right and as she keeps saying, she's right. good for her state. >> sandra: really interesting to get your reaction to that, senator. appreciate you joining us. >> thanks, sandra.

school team and grew up with southern values i take seriously. >> john: first real job in broadcasting. fort wayne. >> fort wayne, i stayed there seven years and then you scooped me up to new york city. i was terrified as a midwest gal but got into it. >> john: and then you moved down here to washington, d.c., took on one of the hardest jobs in journalism, and that's covering capitol hill. >> you have to have patience. and you have to know everyone. so many topics to cover, like covering the white house but with so many more people, you have to know their aides and their teams, and so it does take a while. i think the best thing that happened for me and honestly, the worst thing for the world was the fall of kabul, that happened the weekend that i moved here, so i thought that i would have to know all this legislative language and processes and things like that, and really honestly threw that

about you and not too much about itself is the u.n. high commission for refugees and you are on the board. >> i am -- i just started earlier this year. i'm on the board for u.s.a. for unhcr, the non-profit arm of the refugee agency, this i would say is the greatest crisis unour lifetime, about 100 million people around the world displaced. >> and personal connection to this. >> i do. my grandparents left india to what is now pakistan, and they left everything. they were living this aristocrat life, and then overnight had nothing. and my dad is 1 of 11, so instilled that everything can be taken away from you, so all you truly have are your skills, talents, intelligence, the
