outright fraud. it's really sad that you had -- these are, by the way, not just mom and pop retail investors. these are supposedly sophisticated institutional investors who basically just got sucked into it and one of them relayed to me that -- this particular organization passed on investing but when they asked about whether he had a board of directors or an outside advisory board, his response to them was that's insulting. well, well, that's basically business actually. that's what should be insulting to all those investors but they got duped. >> steve: congressman, you mentioned mom and pop. what about his mom and pop? aren't they law professors? shouldn't they have given their son a little advice?

you should write something down apparently people in the company would request payments and stuff like that. payments would be approved via emoji. >> maybe mom and dad should have sent a frowny face or something emoji. because, that actually is a very good question. there is indications that his dad was on the payroll. the question is to what end? what were you doing in fact, when sam bankman-fried came into my office for a brief meeting, he was 15, 20 minutes late for a 30-minute meeting. right before he came to testify in december of 2021. his dad was actually with him in my office. and i was curious, you know, what is their role? these are law professors that you would think should be giving their son legal advice podcaster. nobody else was there doing it so he was sort of filling in.
