we are going to begin with the growing security concerns about tiktok and the push to crack down on that popular app. nearly a dozen states have already banned tiktok on government devices, and while they are all led by republican governors, people are starting to take notice just in general. the senate just passed a similar bill on the national level, and it got bipartisan support. still, some in the media are framing it only as a republican issue. >> republican lawmakers primarily are using tiktok as the face of the chinese government. to show to their constituents, which is very popular right now, to have a hard stance on china, to show to their constituents that they are taking this hard line stance, they are basically saying, "we want to ban tiktok," using this as a vehicle to deliver that message to their base. >> harris: senator marco rubio trashed that reporting has misleading. he tweeted this. "this isn't a g.o.p.-led tiktok
9:02 am
band craze. it's over three years of effort. it's always been bipartisan. but cnn's obsession with bashing republicans is so ingrained in their culture, their journalists reflexively defend everyone. we are against even the communist party of china." breaking news right now, you sat down and showed me the screen on your phone. tiktok just banned you. was it because you are coming on "outnumbered"? >> enes: probably not. when i had a conversation with one of my friends from congress, i'm like, "listen, do not download tiktok on your phone." i had a second phone. the reason i downloaded it, i was posting things about tibetans and hong kongers, uighur people. >> harris: people who don't have a voice. >> enes: exactly. just this morning i got an

email, "due to multiple community guideline violations, you are prevented from posting." >> harris: it's a completely blank page with the little tiktok -- >> enes: i can't believe it, i got this email from them. but it's definitely unbelievable. >> harris: you do a lot to get the words on your shirt into the bloodstream of the world. "silence is violence." why is tiktok particularly so sensitive, do you think, about your words? >> enes: because i talk about the truth of what ccp is doing. i never talk about politics. i talk about the human rights violations, about what tibetans are going through, hong kongers, i talk about the slave labor, organ harvesting, forced sterilization and abortion, and obviously that really bothers
9:04 am
them. and i posted on tiktok. i got that email this morning. >> harris: i'm glad you have more than one phone. [laughs] >> enes: that was the important thing my friend and congress told me, get a second phone. >> harris: kennedy, he has friends in congress now. i would have to imagine that, for the average american, there is much help, with elon musk taking over the platform. we will need more oversight than elon musk. >> kennedy: yes, and a couple weeks ago i posited that maybe elon musk should buy china. then he could take over tiktok. that would be the only way it could happen. i'm happy to say i am on the couch with enes. enes is my friend. he has done more with his shoes to confront china than this administration has in two years. but they have been complicit in some of the things that enes bravely brings up, and he knows that his family is at risk, his career is at risk. he has lost friends. but he has done so much in the

name of freedom, and it's like, i want to listen to what he has to say. a lot of what we do is words. what he does is action, and it's dangerous, and it is real. the way he speaks truth to power, we are very concerned about tiktok but we should also be concerned about our own government, which has so many agencies and so many apparatus playlists that spy on us every single day. so i'm fine with congressional action there. as long as it's evenly meted out to the post office, the nsa, the cia, everybody has eyes on what we do. >> harris: preach that. jackie? >> jackie: this is an issue and very passionate about. for a long time, the apps i have on my phone -- facebook, instagram, alexa in your house, i don't have any of that. you don't even speak out loud in all of the sudden your phone is showing you ads for that very product. i never put tiktok on my phone.
9:06 am
to bring it back to the top, this is bipartisan, first of all. this is an issue that affects everybody, china spying on us. but what i want is for people to be more educated about it. i'm glad the government is doing something but i wish parents and kids would understand what's behind it. i hope there's no backlash that we are trying to move in this direction. i hope they understand why we are trying to move in this direction, you know what i mean? >> harris: it sounds like you know if you teenagers. [laughs] >> jackie: i do, and they like tiktok, and that's part of the problem. it has gained so much popularity. but parents have to explain to kids that technology has a dark side, and they need to be aware of that, especially when they are growing up in this environment. >> harris: i'm that geek who watches c-span hearings. i get a little concerned that sometimes -- not only lawmakers, but some of them on capitol hill aren't as up to speed as they need to be the talk about these important issues with regard to technology and big tech, so on and so forth. very basic questions being asked. i just want to make sure that we
9:07 am
treat this like the national security risk that it is. >> emily: to jackie's point, it's an american issue, not a partisan issue. i echo everything kennedy said. we are so honored to have you on the couch today, truly. i consider you a lighthouse in that darkness of tech. as your role as a lighthouse, what would you say that you are hearing with so many people that come to you with their stories and experiences? we know that in china past 2017 it is a law that you must cooperate with the ccp and transfer data to them as a company and as a person. so when you say you focus on human rights issues, it is so admirable in human. but it intertwines politically because the ccp is who is engaging in those violations. what are your experiences in that department? >> enes: whenever i had a conversation with someone from that area, they said the chinese government had to make them download this app on their phone. and they listen to every where
9:08 am
they are saying. if they say anything against the chinese government, it gives you minus points. say i have a lot of minus points, if i come close to you, it says "stay away from this guy." that's one of my friends who told me about it, and i was just shocked. this is crazy. and i'm not even talking about all the surveillance, the cameras. they watch literally everything these people are doing. that's only just one area. there are so many other areas where people are literally scared to say anything. but in the last two weeks, i see this that protesters are protesting the government and saying enough is enough, we want our freedom, we want our free speech, and it gives me so much hope. whenever i see this, unshakable regimes are being shaken to their own color, that gives me hope. >> emily: what about your former nba colleagues in this
9:09 am
tiktok concept? to some of them feel the same way you do, see the light, and yet still feel constrained with how honest they can be about it? >> enes: they don't really care. they earn extra money. for every like they get. they know what's going on. if they say they don't know about it, that's 100% lies. they know about it. but every post they put out there, every like is like another dollar for them. they don't care about it. >> harris: what you said about the silence that people were expressing with those blank pieces of paper, we see that around the world in different ways. we have to support it. i turned on "fox & friends" the morning that was happening, and all the anchors had white pieces of paper. it's important for the world, with our big megaphone and freedom, like what you are doing, to put those messages out there for the people on the ground. and what even could be a revolution for women in iran. if he gets enough support and attention. so there is a lot for us to do, and you are leading the way.

9:18 am
disown you? how can they do that? >> enes: i talked about some of the problems happening in turkey, and my first dad first gotfired. he was a scientist. the saddest one was my little brother. he wanted to be like his big brother playing in the nba and stuff. he was getting kicked out of every team because of our same last name. they had to put a statement out. actually the letter is still out there on the internet. they said, "we are disowning enes." the turkish government didn't believe it. the simplest to my house in turkey and raided my house, took all the electronics away. phones, computers, laptops. they wanted to see if i'm still in contact with my family or not. >> harris: what was it like for you in terms of going home, or them coming here? what kind of communication, what kind of visits can you have? especially under the guise of the government putting pressure that you guys don't know each other. >> enes: it has been almost ten years now that i haven't seen my family. last time i talked to my family, i can't even remember.
