>> john: two good movies. >> sandra: sandra smith in new york. title 42 is set to end next wednesday, and hundreds of migrants are waiting to enter the u.s. once the policy is lifted. fox news obtaining video from the border in el paso showing migrants wearing blankets and lighting fires just to keep warm while they wait. meanwhile, cartels continue to exploit bedlam, to sneak drugs and migrants into the country. >> john: we start this thursday with bill melugin, he's live on the border in eagle pass, texas. is el paso completely overrun at this point? >> john, good afternoon to you. it absolutely is. and we'll put it in perspective for you, a cbp source telling us in the last 24 hours alone, in the el paso sector, nearly 2,600 illegal crossings and the releases are continuing daily by the hundreds. showing the situation in el paso

last night, well over 1,000 migrants waiting for border patrol to let them in through a chain link fence, and process them. some of them starting campfires because it's so cold. the cbp source says the el paso sector has seen over 139,000 migrant encounters, a staggering 255% increase over the same time last year. local shelters completely overwhelmed, and they say what's happening there is completely unprecedented. take a listen. >> we have never seen anything like this, and i've been the ceo 25 years. in years past we would get, you know, maybe here is a group of ten cubans, something like that. now all of a sudden the border patrol is releasing as many as 500, 600 a day just to the streets of el paso.

>> and it's not isolated to just el paso. take a look at the footage here in eagle pass. the del rio sector overwhelmed, several hundred have crossed illegally, almost all of them single adults. the source telling us the del rio sector has seen over 115,000 illegal crossings since october 1st, that is up 56% over the same time last year and last year was the all time record high for the sector. and the rio grande valid, liquid meth bust made by border patrol. agents seizing over 3,000 pounds of liquid meth. they found hidden in chlorox bottles disguised as bleach with border patrol saying the third largest meth bust in the history of u.s. border patrol. back out here live, the crisis affecting parts of the border.

miami sector, border patrol there saying they have been inundated with boats of haitians and cubans, and people from the dominican republic. their numbers for the first two months of the fiscal year, up over 500% in miami sector over the same time last year. so, this is happening all across the southern border and that is with title 42 still in place, at least for another six days. back to you. >> john: that's pretty amazing, and the dhs secretary on tuesday with nothing that resembles a plan to you to deal with this. bill, thank you. sandra. >> sandra: a brand-new report from house republicans saying that there are indications covid-19 may be linked to china's bioweapons research program and says the virus may have spilled over to the civilian population after leaking from that lab in wuhan. florida senator rick scott joins us with his reaction to that in just moments. but first, let's go to senior national correspondent rich edson, this report takes

aim at u.s. intelligence agencies. what are we learning? >> it does. authors of this report say the intelligence community is stone walling them and refuses to answer their questions. last year the office of the director of national intelligence released a report on the origins of covid-19. republicans write their review quote of available public and non-public materials reveals evidence that sars covid two was potentially connected to the china biological weapons program, a report omitted much of the information. gop report claims the information is still classified, and they contend agencies could disclose it without harming national security. the information the republican report does offer largely centers on suspected ties between china's military and bioweapons research, and scientists at the wuhan institute of virology.

you know, let's get the facts, i don't trust anything that comes out of communist china personally. >> john: rewind back to april 30, 2020, in the east room of the white house, i asked president trump if he had high confidence that the virus came out of the laboratory, here is what he told me. he said yes, i have seen this evidence, we have people looking at it very, very closely. scientific people, intelligence people and others and we will pull it together and i think we are going to have a very good answer eventually. and i asked what gives you a high degree of confidence this originated from the wuhan institute of virology. the president, i'm not allowed to tell you that. back then the president said we have seen the evidence, we don't know if we will have anything definitive, but if it came out of the institute and part of a bioweapons program, what consequences sh you had china face and held to account?

>> sandra: fox news alert, wall street we are seeing the dow off 920 points at this hour, the lowest point of the session. just a couple hours left in the trading day and this as we have a brand-new report out on the economy. retail sales did take a hit in the latest month. they fell .6%, it was the biggest decline of the year. and that is weighing on investors' minds as they see the fed trying to tackle inflation. there are fears that the fed raising interest rates will drive us into a recession. what we are seeing is consumers starting to pull back on purchases, you know, whether it's updating their homes, holiday purchases, automobiles, we are starting to see that take a hit and as a result the market is down. brand-new polling shows voters are not thrilled with the economy, not thrilled with the direction the country is going in, one poll shows 81% think the

democrats and he had the most successful midterm since 1934, i believe it was, why wouldn't he run for president again. >> sandra: wouldn't that mean more of the same, people not feeling about about the direction of the country or the economy? >> joe biden did well, if i was a democrat i would disagree with jessica. if you look at how well he's doing on the stage, how well he's governing, he's losing his step and i think they would be well served. as a republican, i love that joe biden will run again, 41, 42%, wrong track, 72%. >> sandra: and who would he run against? >> i think donald trump has the heart of a lot of republican voters but i think they will watch the debate happen and go who really is right to lead the country forward and we'll see. >> sandra: there are some democrats who are starting to show their concern about a

fantastic officers who sacrificed their lives for the good of society, the good of the community they everybody is. 34-year-old sergeant steven robin was a serious mentor, made great cops out of rookies, a husband and father. and brandon westdorf showed maturity beyond his age. they conducted a welfare check on a woman and child in the parking lot of a motel 6 in bay st. louis. after they called for child protective services, the woman, 43-year-old amy anderson, allegedly shot the officers before fatally shooting herself. the community is holding a candlelight vigil to honor the officers this evening. >> lives were not lost in vain. they loved coming to work and being officers, putting on the uniform and going out there every day to serve you, serve our citizens.

>> sandra: tensions escalating between the u.s. and russia as washington considers plans to give ukraine advanced patriot defense missiles. moscow saying it would consider the move a provocation. warning, it could lead to unpredictable consequences. nate foy is on the ground in kyiv for us. he's got the latest from there. nate. >> hey, sandra, yeah, russia launched a rocket strike hitting kharkiv today, hit an empty warehouse so nobody was hurt but more shelling in kherson, a southern city here in ukraine, two people were killed and the power grid is out there as a result of this shelling. take a look at this video, comes one day after the regional administrative building there was also hit. today's attack about 100 yards from the attack that you see here playing out yesterday, but remember, this is a city that ukraine just took back from the russians and it was also a city

that was home to an american citizen for two years before the war started and his life got a lot more complicated back in june. take a look at the next video, sandra. involved in a prisoner exchange, he was arrested by russian forces in june under suspicion of being a cia operative. he says his time there in russian captivity was horrible. he says he was tortured with electric shocks, given very little food, very little water to drink. he was released as were 64 ukrainian soldiers, unknown exactly how many russian soldiers were given away as part of that deal. take a look at the next video, undisclosed location, we met with the commander of the georgian legion here in ukraine. he tells me his unit is making significant progress in the east but he also said this, listen here. >> one of the heaviest stages

strategy. the biggest challenge that republicans have is convincing the public this investigation is really about joe biden and not just about hunter biden who doesn't hold a position in the u.s. government. >> john: that's the point james comer is making, saying it's not about investigating hunter biden, it's about investigating the president of the united states to see if he improperly benefitted from his son's overseas business dealings. you cannot really make a case, oh, we are going to investigate a private individual. you have to say we are investigating a public individual and then if you catch a private individual in the investigation, then you've got both. >> if you listen to some of the defenders of hunter biden, there's a lot of sordid material on the hunter biden laptop. he was a crackhead, and they do all sorts of really awful things in the midst of their addiction. and much of that is recorded in pictures and stuff on the laptop. so you are hearing democrats say republicans are just, they just want to expose that stuff, they are just crazed about you will a

the salacious material and that's all the investigation is about, and republicans are saying no, no, no, we are interested in bank records, the financial records, we want to know where the money went. >> john: so the treasure trove of documents the national archives is preparing and may release, how hard do you think the white house will keep to fight these from the light of day. >> we don't know if it's a treasure trove. it's interesting, a lawsuit filed by a group called america first legal, started by steven miller, former trump white house aide, and they have documents that have the word barisma in it, the energy company that hired hunter biden for $50,000 a month to do not much of anything. so the question is will the white house, or the obama archive, turn over this

>> quite conveniently for mr. bankman-fried's counsel he is arrested right before he was due to provide hours worth of sworn testimony to congress. >> getting six hours of congressional grilling for a tar targeted investigation for a defendant, that would be great for my case. >> sandra: arrest of ftx founder sam bankman-fried raising more questions and not just about the collapse. they nabbed him less than 24 hours before he was set to testify on capitol hill, albeit remotely. some are questioning the timing.

fox news contributor miranda devine joins us now. i take myself back to the night before when the arrest took place and we were planning our shows for the next day, we knew we were going to have this hearing happening, we were going to see this alleged con man testify before the house committee and wham-o, the arrest took place and what went through your mind? >> i just immediately smelled a rat. this is extremely suspicious timing. there's no reason for them to have nabbed him there and then, they could have waited a few hours. they sort of -- the idea had been floated around that he was a flight risk. i mean, he's been there for weeks. if he was a flight risk, he would have left. his mother was in court in the bahamas on tuesday morning and she just laughed out loud at the idea that he was -- he would be a fugitive. so that doesn't pass the sniff test. they are obviously trying to protect someone, and there's a couple of theories, one is

because sam bankman-fried was the second largest donor after george soros to the democratic party, and there's talk of as much as half a billion dollars already gone to sort of dark money pacs for the dems, as well as he promised another $1 billion for the 2024 election. now, they don't want that money to really be scrutinized too closely, perhaps that's the case and a political issue in congress, and the other maybe even more likely reason is that gary genzler, the head of the securities and exchange commission, had met twice with sam bankman-fried in the past year, pretty unprecedented, and he also obviously had not done -- put the correct regulations around that industry and around what sbf was doing, it's like he was turning a blind

eye. and we also found out curiously from a fox news exclusive that gary genzler had scrubbed the details from his diary, his public diary of meetings with george soros, hillary clinton his former boss, he used to be the finance chair of her campaign, and also nancy pelosi. so, what is going on? it's something fishy, and it is just shameful that the doj would be involved in, if they were, in covering up and making this timing so conducive to sam bankman-fried's defense attorneys, not to the prosecutors. >> sandra: and as far as precedent in the hours that followed, we were able to catch up with jonathan turley and very similarly he said this. >> this is the first time in my memory that prosecutors rather than defense attorney stopped someone from making
