[laughter] and i like your satin shirt. rachel: you mentioned that, thank you. pete: very cool. will: our top story, it's another twitter dump. the the newly releasedth installment revealing the fbi and the tech giant were operating like one big team. pete: and flagging content after the 2016 election including jokes. rachel: kevin corke joins us live from washington. >> reporter: just incredible. good morning, will, rachel and pete. in the sixth installment of the so-called twitter files, we actually got a much clearer

picture of just how cozy the relationship was between the fbi and the social media platform. that revelation among many shared by independent journalist matt taibbi with. so cozy was the relationship that taibbi tweeted a adroitly, twitter's contact with the fbi was constant and pervasive as if it were a subsidiary. wow. now, there this: between january 2020 and november 2022 there were over 150 e-mails between the fbi and former twitter trust and safety chief yoel roth. and there's more. tie question by writes: -- taibbi writes: but a surprisingly high number are requests by the fbi for twitter to take action on election misinformation even involving joke tweets from low follower accounts. and there's more. the fbi's social media-focused task force known as ftif,

created in the wake of the 2016 election, swelled to some 80 agents and core responded with twitter to identify alleged foreign influence and election tampering of all kinds. taibbi also detailed another e-mail from november 6th which showed fbi agent elvis chan forwarded a list to twitter folks. again, they're talking about accounts that they wanted flagged. twitter then replied with its list of actions taken. note mercy, writes taibbi, shown to actor billy baldwin. and, of course, there's passage which underscores the unique one big, happy family vibe between twitter and the fbi. and he asks this important question: with what other firm would the fbi lively agree to no impediments to classified information? now, the fbi, of course, is responding in absolutely

predictable language. the fbi regularly engages with private sector entities to provide information specific to identify foreign malign influence actors, subversive, undeclared, covert or criminal activities. private sector entities independently make decisions about what, if any, action they take on their platforms and for their customers after of the fbi has -- after the fbi notifies them. that is exactly the language we see a lot of here in the nation's capital. however, what they didn't say is why they felt it necessary to put the weight of fbi on the scales of information before, during and after a presidential election. and as you know, all this is now happening as republicans say the agency has a lot to answer for, and they hope and expect to get those answers when hay take control of the house -- they take control of the house next month. to be continued, guys.

will: thank you, kevin. i think the big takeaway here, what is quite stunning is the relationship between law enforcement, specifically the fbi, but not exclusively, and twitter. the takeaway of what most people think of as the deep state is a tangled collaboration of state agencies, private actors and sometimes state-funded ngos. the lines become so blurred as to be meaningless. seeing people like james baker going from the fbi inside to twitter, and this is a bigger conversation than twitter because you with see people like eric schmidt, the former ceo of google, alphabet then moves eventually into government. it's a back and forth that really i'll is incestuous. rachel: you talk about that relationship, they even wish each other happy birthday. i thought that was kind of indicative as well. i think it goes back to what our friend charlie kirk said. elon musk says this is a crime scene at a company, but charlie kirk says this is a superpac for

the dnc, and it truly is. and you can see through this new tranche of e-mails who they diseased -- you notice they consider whether they're going to krone sor billy -- censor billy bald wayne. concern baldwin. not alec baldwin. pete: it almost all goes in one direction. this is only twitter, to what you said, will, and only what we are effectively allowed to see. who knows what jim baker deleted with other people in charge of this particular process. but it was a pass-through. it was almost automatic. when you read what matt taibbi said, if the fbi -- it would be signed sf, san francisco office of the fbi. these following accounts are saying things we don't hike. regular people, not famous people, small accounts, jokes. and it would almost immediately get forwarded and transferred into, okay, this person's been banned, this person's suspended. everybody vote on tuesday except

for democrats, you vote on wednesday. the kinds of nonsense you see on twitter all rationalizes stopping foreign interference. they never stopped and thought, wait, this is domestic interference. of. rachel: right. pete: under the guise of stopping something -- rachel: and it's only what we know. i mean, imagine that some of the most egregious stuff we haven't even seen. pete: yeah. rachel: maybe they were clever enough not to put into an e-mail. again, i know i'm -- pete: they reference phone calls on. thanks for the call about -- i mean, you don't put that stuff in an e-mail. rachel: and i want to again just emphasize, this is election interference. we spent four years covering potential -- which turned out not to be true -- election interference from russia with the trump campaign. this was absolutely a coordinated effort to change election results. here's representative james comer from kentucky. he's going to be the ranking member in the house oversight reform committee, and he says

this about flagging twitter. >> my concern was that this was a rogue fbi employee or two, but we knew the fbi was the one communicating with the three twitter employees. fbi had its own ministry of propaganda. 80 fbi agents dedicated to nothing but censoring free speech on the internet. 80 agents. as someone who's going to be the incoming chairman of the oversight committee, that's roughly $12 million expenses to the taxpayers in salary and benefits. but look at our first amendment rights. anyone that cares about free speech should be outraged whether you're a republican or democrat. this has to stop, this is going to be a top the priority for the republican majority in january. will: i really think that's the highlight as well. i think fact that we have 80 agents dedicated to combing through social media is absolutely absurd. whether or not it's in the fbi's charter, why is it in the priorities? law enforcement agency that has

metastasized, grown over time well beyond what we thought a federal police department would be tasked, but it is obviously as well politicized. rachel: yeah. pete: very much so. while this is the all happening and we're covering now the sixth tranche of twitter the files, this one being one of the most significant because it provides the evidence of a private connection between -- a connection between a private company and the government, the rest of the media are talking about the temporary suspension of accounts for left-wing journalists because they had, you mow the story at this point, there was a twitter account that tracked the location of elon musk's jet. he doesn't like that. he said it was doxxing, but there were still other journalists pushing out information about where his jet was, and he us -- suspended those accounted, and they the -- accounts, and they the howled. one of them happens to tweet about program regularly put out

a statement saying i have no information, i've been suspended. no one's telling me, i have no recourse. welcome to the party, buddy. [laughter] that's the way it's been across the country on an arbitrary set of rules from a tech old oligarchly -- can oligarch key in san francisco. at least mucks is telling you -- mucks is telling you why. asking unsuspended accounts who dox my exact location, should they be allowed back on now or in seven days. 3.5 million twitter members voted on that with 58% saying they should come back now. and this is what elon musk said is. accounts who dox my location will have their suspension lifted now, but it's amazing to see the outrage over a couple new york times, washington post reporters -- rachel: initially it said that he was now banning journalists. i was like, whoa, whoa, whoa,

what's going on? but actually think about it, what he's uncover covering is so dangerous to so many people because he's uncovering a conspiracy that is much deeper and wider than we even imagined. and he actually tweeted, by the way, i have no suicidal thoughts. if something happens -- this is something he's thought about. i mean, i am -- pete: he knows he's a target. rachel: -- i'm a target, and he doesn't mean that in some sort of hypothetical way. i think he understands his life could be in danger. just want to speak also, will, to what you mentioned about the 80 agents being the main story here. there are also whistleblower fbi agents who said i was working on kiddie porn cases, on child sex crimes, and i was taken of off in ordered to do probably this kind of stuff -- pete: january 6th stuff. rachel: it's really a disgusting sense of priorities.

♪ if. will: more stunning developments as the is sixth batch of twitter files are released last night, the latest highlighting the fbi's social media-focused task force created in the wake of the 2016 election, and it swelled to 80 agents. here to react, carr are frederick, tech policy center director at heritage. kara, great to see you this morning. i, for one, am really taken aback by the idea that this is part of the fbi's priorities, that they devote 80 agents and resources to monitoring social media. what are your thoughts? >> well, my thoughts are resources are limited by their very nature, right? so if the fbi bi is -- fbi is

devoting 80 different agents to this problem, and make 40 mistake this problem is policing the speech of americans, then what are they not doing? there's enormous child safety issues on platform. there's actual legitimate terrorists, propaganda on these platforms. you know, when i worked at facebook, there are legitimate reasons to actually talk to government entities. this is absolutely not one of them. i think there's a potential first amendment violation here, and it should be investigated down to the core. will: really quickly, so that's a perspective i think we should all hear. what is the legitimate reason that a social media company would be coordinating with the federal government and specifically law enforcement? if we can understand that, we can also understand where then it bleeds into an illegitimate relationship. >> yeah. so a lot of of these company, they started with an apparatus that looked at child safety. you want to get child sexual
