training we deployed to iraq and on may 25th, 2004, hit by a rocket propelled grenade on the roof top of a police station. >> brian: what happened to the group you were with? what happened to you? >> what happened to me, like i said, i got hit with a rpg. they pulled me to safety. i traveled from germany to walter reed army medical center and that's where wounded warrior project who provided me a backpack of everyday essentials. i still have that backpack almost 19 years later. >> brian: when you woke up, what was missing on your body? >> when i woke up, i saw that one arm was shorter than the other. it was my left arm and a lot of people don't know i was left hand dominant the first 27 years of my life. >> brian: because that was one thing the coach was complaining about you could only shoot with one hand. who called you when you were recovering in germany. >> coach mcgraw called me. must have been 2:00 a.m. in indiana and i said coach, all those years you wanted me to use my right hand, now i have no other choice. she went silent on the line.

>> brian: also you lost your wedding ring. >> i lost my wedding ring and my comrades went back up on the roof top. found my hand under several inches of sand and retrieved my rings and my master sergeant harrelson gave me those rings where do you want me to put them. i only have five ming fingers left so put them on my finger. >> brian: that's fantastic. isn't that team work. >> unbelievable. danielle is truly exceptional in her resilience. this is model for other veterans. over the holidays, this is a difficult time for veterans. there is help out there. you just got to reach out for help. that's what danielle is doing. she is sharing the word. raising awareness for what we do and helping veterans connect in their communities with each other and rethat system. >> brian: 1958 undiagnosed ptsd. try to come out of it try to go to drinking and drugs to try to get that connection back. >> right? >> yes. and that's why wounded warrior project is needed for the long haul because you have veterans

>> welcome back to "fox & friends." the year is coming to an end. >> but the migrant surge is not. with just two days until title 42 expires. expected border crossings could surge to over 5 million per year. the city of el paso declaring a state of emergency as property owners are panicking. reaching deals to resume border wall construction in anticipation. joining us now is former el paso u.s. marshal and deputy chief of the el paso police department robert el monte. thank you so much for joining us this morning. what do you expect to happen starting on wednesday when title 42 is lifted? >> right, you know, prior to wednesday and now we have seen the flood gates open and wednesday the sea the dam break and it really hits home because el paso is my hometown. i spent 25 years there with the police department. born and raised there. i grew up 4 blocks from the

border. el paso is a compassionate city there is only so much to take. for the mayor to key clair an emergency. you know it's really bad. so, what i don't understand is why we are not seeing more response from the white house, washington, d.c. for example, feerges i tho thought they were supposed to handle emergencies and disasters. that's where we are at right now. they need to be down there providing housing for these migrants and taking care of them and food and things of that nature the burden is going to be placed on the city. it's just el paso is just overwhelmed. and i'm planning to be in el paso on wednesday to get a firsthand look at what's going on out there. >> rachel: you know, robert, you are saying what many democrats are saying, frankly, is that they need more resources. what about securing the border so this doesn't happen? what about signaling that you are going to lift title 42 so we don't have this surge? it doesn't make any sense to me. i will ask you this as well, robert.

i was down at the border. what i saw was that they really wanted to quickly process people so you wouldn't get these bottlenecks. they could disperse the illegal immigrants through the country and the media wouldn't call attention. iconfused as to why they are allowing title 42 to be lifted because you are going it see what you see here bottleneck accumulation of inhumanity and inhumane conditions for them. >> you are absolutely right. i think all of america is confused. because it seems like the answer would be to stop the bleeding. we're not stopping the bleeding. and until you stop the bleeding, things aren't going to improve. it's just going to be getting worse and worse day after day. so, i'm like you. i don't understand why they don't stop the bleeding. that needs to happen first. there is no plan from i will say
