face brings me a chill. to smile after losing your husband, a hero, is impossible. you make miracles happen. >> strong families. they married strong women, i can tell you that. they want their loved ones left behind to be happy. that's the important message. july thank you so much on behalf of all the first responders families you've helped since nine nerve. merry christmas. >> we are concerned with those living on our streets. our seniors. >> it will be below freezing for an extended period of time. 24 degrees or lower. >> if you can stay home, stay home. be with your loved ones and loved once. pick people to check on. >> julie: cities are bracing for a dangerous winter storm as a
7:01 am
powerful bomb cyclone is bringing bitterly cold weather and travel headaches. welcome to a brand-new hour of "america's newsroom." i'm julie banderas. dana perino and bill hemmer have the day after. >> john: i'm john roberts. more than 200 million americans have a blast of extreme weather delivers freezing cold temperatures across much of the country. rain, heavy snow, ice, high winds across the united states. the frigid air moving down from where else, canada causing temperatures to plunge dramatically. robert ray reporting for fox weather in chicago. the national weather service warnings conditions will be getting worse rapidly. i'm reminded of south park, robert, blame canada. >> good morning from michigan avenue behind me. the windy city.
7:02 am
temps right now are just as freezing. it doesn't feel nasty but it will change in a few hours. we'll see a plummet of temps going from 32 degrees all the way down to 0. and then what happens? oh, we are in for it for 24 hours and we are going to see windchills of negative 35 degrees and wind gusts 40, 50, 60 miles-per-hour unfortunately. we've already seen this by video in south dakota and wyoming. look at some of the white out conditions from the blizzard that was happening out there and it is on the way to the midwest. the city of chicago very nervous about whether or not they'll see power outages, broken pipes, shelters for people that are displaced are open, warming centers all around the city. the thing is, too, the snow,
7:03 am
guys, is really not a major factor here. we'll see 4 to 6 inches but it is the winds and the temperatures. of course, when you have blizzard conditions like that, kicking up even a few inches of snow you could see drifting and dangerous conditions for travel. on the roads, going to be incredibly dangerous. people should stay off. those white out conditions you won't be able to see 5, 10, 15 feet in front of you. hundreds of flight cancellations already in the chicago area, at o'hare in anticipation. amtrak has shut down lines and unfortunately guys, just a couple days before christmas and here we are with a lot of people that may be in a very nasty situation as you see behind me the magnificent mile, michigan avenue. the fleeting moments of shopping happening right now and we're going to be under the lock of mother nature in just a few hours, john.
7:04 am
>> john: as they say, it is winter, barely, but it is winter. robert ray for us in downtown chicago. robert, thank you. and don't forget to download the fox weather app for the latest updates on the life threatening storm. scan the qr code on the screen and download it right to your phone or go to the app store and get it as well. julie. >> we have no dialogue with this administration sad to say. we're on our own out here. this is like the forgotten border. sadly, this is america's border. >> julie: that was the sheriff explaining how border states are preparing for the worst-case scenario with title 42 in limbo. human and drug trafficking posing a threat and businesses trying to defend themselves from an uptick in crime. grady trimble is live at an auto repair shop in arizona with more for us. good morning, grady. >> good morning, julie.
7:05 am
smuggling is a huge problem in this area. this road right here, state highway 92, is one of the main human and drug smuggling corridors in this county. so you can imagine the challenges that presents for business owners on this stretch of highway like this man, his auto repair shop. you have seen it all because of your location right by the border and right by this smuggling corridor. >> i don't know about seeing it all but i'll tell you something, these high-speed chases going on, the influx of migration, the people looking for a better life and stuff like that, it is affecting us pretty good here. i've had vandalism in the past. i have had people dropping vehicles on my property. they are usually either running humans or they are running drugs. they blend in on this property, so people have a tendency, law
7:06 am
enforcement officers have a tendency to overlook them and then we catch them here. they break into my restrooms and stuff like that. they are looking for a warm place to get in out of the cold or the elements or something of that nature. it does create a lot of damage. >> law enforcement officials as well as you are concerned about title 42 winding down. do you think the biden administration has a plan in place for when that day comes? >> you know, from what i've seen, i don't see no plan in place. i think they are trying to extend it to try to mask the real problem. >> julie, i will end with this. because this is such a big smuggling area, what officials tell us is that there are the mass migrant caravans coming into areas like yuma and el paso are diversions. border patrol is tied up there and you have smuggling going on in these areas and why fentanyl
7:07 am
and other types of drugs are tearing apart these communities along the border. >> julie: very sad. thank you. >> john: temperatures are falling fast across the southern border as well. escalating the humanitarian crisis as a massive surge of migrants continues to overwhelm the area. claudia rodriguez is a city council representative in el paso, texas. last week it was reaching the breaking point. the mayor declared a state of emergency over the weekend. what is the situation like there now? >> hi, good morning, john. i can't see the situation is getting any better. we at the city are trying to scramble and do everything we can do. with the declaration being declared so late in the game it really gave our staff and the community very little time to prepare for this. we have set up shelters at the
7:08 am
convention center, one of the local school districts has set up and loaned us two of their empty school buildings to use as shelters as well. but it is not slowing down. it is not getting any better. i was calling on the mayor to declare. now i think it is urgent that president biden comes down here and sees the repercussions of the decisions he has made. el paso is a blue city. we voted for president biden. i don't think it is fair keeping us out of sight and mind is fair for us. he needs to come down here and really see the destruction and the chaos and really see people living on the streets. it is really bad. the people of el paso should not be paying for this. i urge president biden to come down to el paso to see what is happening here. >> john: to your point whether or not the president should come down and visit the border. here is what kyrsten sinema said yesterday.
7:09 am
>> i absolutely think the president should visit the border. i think anyone who is responsible for setting or making policy on the border should visit the border. i mean, that's a no-brainer, right? >> john: let me ask you this question, claudia, do you believe that president biden coming down to the border with make a difference or are his policies so baked in that regardless of what he saw with his own eyes he wouldn't change? >> i don't know if it would make a difference necessarily in improving the situation but for sure he needs to see what he has done to our communities, what he has done to the state of texas, what he has done to the entire nation. i think senator sinema is absolutely correct. everybody that is in charge of making these policies and everybody that we have entrusted with our sovereignty and protecting our nation needs to be down here and needs to see what's going on. we are in an emergency. we finally declared an emergency. i don't know what more needs to happen other than you need to
7:10 am
react. they need to react and they need to be here and need to see what's going on and do things better not only for the people of this nation but for these migrants themselves. this is not a good situation at all. >> john: particularly when you have 4 or 5 days of cold weather ahead of us. the biden white house is saying to americans, particularly in terms of title 42, trust us, we've got this handled. we have a plan. here is what your governor greg abbott said about that. >> they've handled the border crisis and created the border crisis the exact way they were responsible for creating the crisis in afghanistan. completely unprepared, complete disaster, and texas is left to pick up the pieces of the disaster caused by the biden administration. >> john: can you make any sense of how the president is handling the situation there? >> i cannot. the governor is absolutely
7:11 am
correct. these mistakes keep being made across the world. we voted for this man and this administration. you are supposed to protect us. you are supposed to be here for us in our darkest moments and this is a dark moment for the city of el paso. temperatures are not -- we don't usually have this type of weather here in texas. it is really cold right now. i don't know what else needs to happen. people are dying. migrants are getting ran over and being killed on our highways. i don't know, it is dire, it is bad. i know the governor wrote a letter to the president asking him to come down here. he needs to be down here. immigration is a federal issue. that is his responsibility, not the city of el paso or the state of texas, yet we're having to deal with this. >> john: there are more democrats issuing a call for the president to get down there and
7:12 am
talk to folks on the front lines. we'll see if he does. likely not until the new year if he even does it yet. claudia, good to talk to you. hope you get through the next few days and the cold weather all right. merry christmas. >> julie: ron desantis delivering a major blow to teacher's unions planning new legislation that gives teachers more power at the expense of the unions' wallet. the f.b.i. firing back over the latest batch of twitter files. why they insist there is nothing to see here despite evidence showing close ties with the social media giant. >> we need to make sure is that the government is not going through things helping twitter, facebook or anybody else hold fast to what they should or not on their platforms. that's not the role of the f.b.i. to look at free speech. c.

>> john: the f.b.i. firing back after a latest batch of twitter files discloses close ties between the bureau and twitter. they said their actions were nothing out of the ordinary. mike emanuel is washington. begs the question, what is ordinary? >> interesting to have the f.b.i. response to all of this saying its interactions with twitter say it shows extraditional and on going private sector engagements. we learned in the latest release from michael shellenberger the f.b.i.'s influence campaign may have been helped by the fact it was paying twitter millions of dollars for its staff time. i'm happy to report we have collected $3 million 415323
7:19 am
since october 2019. baker was twitter's former deputy general counsel. that emails reveals baker was told twitter collected nearly 3 1/2 million dollars from the f.b.i. those are reasonable costs and expenses associated with their response to illegal process for complying with legal requests and a standard procedure according to f.b.i. a republican on house oversight says today the f.b.i. responses are carefully worded. >> we need to make sure that the government is not going through things helping twitter, facebook or anybody else hold fast to what they should or not on their platforms. that's not the role of the f.b.i. to look at free speech. that's what's happened. >> on the hunter biden laptop story late in the 2020 presidential campaign f.b.i. officials tell fox we did not provide twitter any specific instruction or details regarding the hunter biden laptop story. on allegations that the f.b.i.
7:20 am
in back channel communications with twitter suppressed or spiked the hunter biden laptop story, the response from the f.b.i. officials is quote, we did not request anything of the sort. f.b.i. officials would not answer if they had any communications with the biden campaign in the fall of 2020, john. >> john: the language is very careful. we didn't say anything about hunter biden just watch out for a hack and leak operation. when it popped up in the "new york post," that must be what they are talking about. great report. mike. >> julie: republican florida governor ron desantis stepping up his fight against teachers union planning a new law that would prevent union dues from being automatically deducted from your paycheck. if you are a teacher, you have no choice according to that. according to desantis, he says this, if they don't have a majority of the teachers who are actually signing up to pay those dues, it should be de-certified.
7:21 am
daniel buck is the author of the new book what is wrong with our schools. that's a loaded question i would love to answer. i will start with governor desantis, he is taking time to step up his fight against these teachers unions. do you agree with desantis that union dues shouldn't be automatically deducted and should teachers be allowed to ocht out? >> absolutely. they rely a lot on inertia. it is easy to let the check keep coming. desantis's new law forces teachers to think do i want to keep supporting this organization. a lot of the teachers i talked to kind of just support the union because they do but when you show them the policies that the unions are supporting, opposition to charter schools, opposition to school choice, support of really lenient discipline policies teachers don't like that and his new law
7:22 am
forces them to make the decision. am i going to keep supporting this organization? i think a lot of teachers will find that no, they don't. >> julie: no, they don't. the teachers are not alone, though. the parents are frustrated as well. these unions first of all are meant to protect teachers. teachers are meant to protect our children. it is actually doing quite a opposite. the unions are not only hurting the teachers, they are hurting the children, are they not? >> yeah i get into in my book. the predominant ideology in schools. both very mediocre approaches to schooling, at times actively political. so schools are turning away from what they are meant for, academic training centers, learning math facts, reading good books and towards activism. towards just all sorts of things like you said, it is not doing right by our students and that's what my -- the purpose of why i
7:23 am
wrote this book. what can we do instead? how do we get back to the school's original purpose of reading, writing and math. it's a simple message. >> julie: after the pandemic when you look at test scores let's look at math and -- not the woke theories in schools that democrats are thrilled with. if you were to act the majority of republicans in the country they say schools are worse off now than when we were kids. democrats are championing it saying it's better. how is it better? look at the test scores. that's what you write about in your book. what's happening to our education system? sadly in the most importantly what effect is it having on america's future and our children? >> well if you look at -- i've done reporting on seattle public schools has a math curriculum. the kids aren't learning traditional math. they are learning the themes of the curriculum are identity,
7:24 am
activism, things like this. maybe in a sociology class. in a math class you should learn addition, subtraction, geometry, things like that. what we need is to go back to traditional theory of education which is schools are meant to be places of learning, not places of activism, not places for teachers' pet political projects but where kids go to that he learn about history, math, all these kinds of things. >> julie: let's leave the activism to the politicians, how about that? thank you for coming on this morning. >> thanks for having me. >> this flag is a symbol of our victory in this war. we stand, we fight and we will win because we are united. j >> john: one of the most

job and therefore they need more weapons and more funding. it seems like he should make the case to the europeans considering the united states is spending twice as much as all of the european countries combined to fight this war. and it's on their continent and yet they aren't as dedicated as we seem to be with the funding. president biden said yesterday he talked to the allies for many, many hours about the importance of that. they say that they understand it and yet the germans aren't giving the funding that you would think they should to continue this funding of the ukrainian people. for the americans and the audience that zelensky was speaking to last night those republicans including incoming house speaker kevin mccarthy said who said we want more accountability with reports that there is a lack of oversight, lack of transparency when it comes to where the weapons are going and where a lot of the money is going. dozens of republican in the house and senate voted against

[laughter] to insure -- bakhmut is not just a stronghold that holds back the russian army but for the russian army to completely pull out. >> john: he didn't say to hold the russian army so we can come to a negotiated settlement and trade land for peace. mark milley, chairman of the joint chiefs suggested that scenario was probably right to exploit right now. zelensky doesn't want to go there. what are we signing up for here? an end to this or signing up for a forever war.
7:38 am
>> that's the question. people on capitol hill have not answered how long it goes on. they say russia can go on for years with the war and president biden in the press conference with zelensky said the united states will be supporting ukraine as long as it takes. american people wanted to get out of afghanistan after 20 years. they didn't sign up for an indefinite war in ukraine that they are funding with their taxpayer dollars indefinitely. so that is why you see a number of republicans coming into the house and saying look, we want to take a hard accounting of what is going on and see if we can come to some kind of agreement to push the ukrainians into some kind of negotiation or at least be very clear what our objectives are at home. >> john: "wall street journal" suggested that putin might need to get beat up. russian leaders got a crap beat out of them in afghanistan for a decade before they pulled out.
