today. bone chilling cold and some seeing temperatures well below 0 and the chill extending to places not used to it. texans hoping to avoid another power crisis as frigid conditions are there. is sunshine state, florida, could see its coldest christmas in more than 30 years. blizzard warnings in effect for more than 10 million people in the upper midwest and great lakes region. those conditions basically snowstorm on steroids. across the country widespread power outages. more than 1 million reported from texas to the east coast. all of this is also causing some chaos for travelers. >> we were scheduled to leave at 7:50 this morning. we got a text last night saying they rescheduled us to austin at 12:00 today with a layover. no, no, no. this is a mess. >> the kind of cold that hurts your face. >> it looks a little chaotic. i'm wondering how everyone will make their flight. >> the wind is pretty brutal.
8:02 am
i felt like i got frostbite instantly. >> at the hotel they had the screen of flights, canceled, canceled. one flight that made it off the ground. >> molly: thousands of flights were canceled today. seattle tack o -- we're in minneapolis where the current temperature is negative nine degrees. first meteorologist evan clots from our fox weather center. >> we do a graphic in the studio. i can begin with what we have here. this is that front line max ten is what i'm looking for, guys. this is our power outages that we switched over to. it is along the frontal boundary stretching from texas -- stretching from texas all the

way up into the northeast and as you see, it's that strong line of where the frontal boundary is and knocking out power. we're continuing to watch it sweep. here is what i was looking for all along. begin with the temperatures. widespread as we pointed out negative 20 to negative 30 and 40. you see it in the midwest and upper midwest. as far as some of the southern reaches of the country. folks in texas don't see feels-like temperature of three. one ding in atlanta this morning driven by the cold air and strong winds. where is the snow system? working its way across the interior new england and getting into parts of the mid atlantic and along the east coast. it is 47 degrees in new york city but as soon as this system passes by temperatures fall to 14 degrees, fall back to one degree. cold air. if you feel like you've been avoiding it and live on the

coast it is about to change. once the front moves through things change rapidly. 50 degrees colder right now than 24 hours yesterday in louisville. it continues to march off towards the east and it will get frigid. wind alerts in place where we look at gusts getting up to 65 miles-per-hour from interior new england and the mid atlantic and portions of the midwest. winds will make it feel frigid. that is what's knocking out the power we showed you a little bit ago. strong wind and i do want to leave you with this. warm right now in new york city and the rest of new england. by the time we get into this evening and early tomorrow temperatures in the teens. molly, even if you feel like you've missed it so far you aren't going to. it is hitting nearly everybody. >> molly: getting ready below freezing. the midwest is getting what seems like the worst of the arctic blast. we're in minneapolis where the snow is piling up and boy, is it
8:05 am
cold. >> this bomb cyclone is not playing fair. it made an entrance that we all feel across the country. according to the meteorologist at the fox weather forecast center they say 68 million americans are experiencing subzero temperatures and across the country, half the country experiencing below freezing temperatures. here in minneapolis is currently negative nine degrees. when you factor in the windchill, molly, it feels more like negative 35 degrees. it's why the national weather service is really urging people to stay off the roads here. temperatures are not expected to reach above 0 degrees today. we're under several winter weather advisories and a windchill advisory. if you walk outside you can get frostbite in a matter of minutes. it's best to hunker down and

stay inside. now, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. tomorrow, christmas eve, temperatures will reach as high as four degrees and christmas day temperatures can reach as high as seven degrees. that's quite a christmas gift considering where we are now. >> molly: it is important to warn people about the dangerous temperatures. thank you for your reporting. temperatures are also down at our southern border. the number of migrants trying to get into the country illegally keeps going up. the latest border patrol numbers show well over half a million encounters just since october 1st. now, some have been expelled under title 42, the pandemic policy that is in limbo. nearly 400,000 have made their way into the u.s. title 42 is still in place but it could end soon. depends on what the supreme court ultimately decides. the white house has asked to lift it but also asked the high court for a bit of a delay
8:07 am
admitting it needs time to prepare for the expected migrant surge once title 42 is officially gone. meanwhile the president literally turning his back on questions about the crisis yesterday. >> president biden: merry christmas, happy holidays, and all the best of the new year. god bless you all and may god protect our troops. thank you. >> mr. president, are you going to the southern border? >> molly: no answers there and still no border visit from the president, either. republican lawmakers are not impressed. >> he has done nothing to fix the problem. he has never been to the border. it is so unconscionable for him not to go to the border and listen to the agents and people trying to control the border, what life is like along our southern border. >> molly: chad wolf former acting secretary of homeland security now to talk about what's going on. thank you for giving us a little

time this holiday. first we'll get an update from our reporter bill melugin consistently bringing light to this very topic. bill, to you. >> good morning to you. certainly not used to these kind of temperatures down here at the southern border. we're in the mid 20s here in eagle pass right now. we want to show you something that happened yesterday right here where we're standing as we were trying to interview texas congressman tony gonzalez who represents the area. a group of migrants rush the river behind us and get chased by mexican authorities. take a look. >> wow. >> some of that beeping you hear are from the vehicles belonging to the mexican authorities who are honking at the group of over a dozen migrants who jumped into the river. pulled up and started yelling at the migrants. didn't want them to get into the river. a dozen migrants did that in the
8:09 am
cold, frigid water and some brought little children with them. they crossed illegally into eagle pass and walked onto a local golf course where people were playing golf and they surrendered themselves to border patrol. congressman gonzalez says this happens every day and get only more dangerous with the weather the next few days. >> it is going to get very cold. we are talking temperatures we haven't seen in a decade. here you have people wading through the water. it is not good for everyone. children, it is not good. we have to keep title 42 in place and need to have a plan after. >> i'll take you out to the tucson, arizona sector. border patrol arresting two u.s. juveniles ages 14 and 15. they were driving that red car and they were smuggling five illegal immigrants inside of their vehicle including two in the trunk.
8:10 am
border patrol continuing to see more u.s. teenagers getting involved in human smuggling as they get sucked in through offers of quick, easy cash on social media by cartels and smuggling organizations. we'll finish in texas. the police department here doing a traffic stop on a big rig truck and found 20 illegal immigrants being smuggled inside of that 18 wheeler big rig. border patrol took all of them into custody. we see a lot of that on the texas border, the big rig trucks smuggling large groups of migrants. we all remember the tragedy that happened earlier this year in san antonio when 53 migrants died in a big rig truck. cbp sources telling fox news just since october 1st there have been more than 575,000 migrant encounters at our southern border. that's equivalent to the city of baltimore's population and a large majority of those have
8:11 am
been released into the united states via title eight processing. >> molly: also noting that cold weather adding a different dynamic to what's going on there. serious issue happening across the country but for those folks in particular in the water. now we go to chad wolf. the former acting secretary of homeland security. thank you so much for joining us, giving us a little bit of your time on this holiday. we heard from bill, excellent reporting consistently. today it is really cold down there in the 20s and we see people wading through the waters coming out adding a whole level of danger to a situation that has claimed the lives of so many migrants already that have a terrible situation trying to get into this country in this illegal manner. your thoughts as this cold weather is infolding across the country? >> what i'll say is the human trafficking and the business of the cartels don't stop for weather unfortunately. we see it historically and numbers bear it out.
8:12 am
the images you showed is important to remember that's what title 42 in place. we already have a crisis on our border of historic proportions. very difficult to deal with. now when you look at title 42 potentially going away, you had another level, a whole other dimension to this crisis that is going on. so i feel for the men and women of the border patrol. the agents there that will spend their holidays again processing migrants instead of being on the border and securing that border. i will just say congress had a chance to try to fix this and they failed. instead they simply provided more money to simply process more and more migrants into the country. so what congress did here recently is just provide another year of this failed border strategy. >> molly: do you think the more money for processing is a lure? >> absolutely. if you build it, they will come. the cartels are monitoring our
8:13 am
actions and our reactions very closely. so they hear this, they understand that congress has provided more money for more processing facilities and more resources to process folks. great news to the cartels and traffickers. they can push more product. their product is human beings. they can push more of their product over the line because they'll be processed quicker. it will be a -- continue to be a boon for the cartels unfortunately. >> molly: the governor agreeing to remove the state's makeshift border wall after the biden administration filed a lawsuit last week trying to get the shipping containers off of federal land. representative dan crenshaw of texas weighed in on this. take a listen. >> it seems if the biden administration is upset about the governor of one of our states putting contain -- shipping containers on federal land, you would also think the
8:14 am
president would be upset about an infringement on federal land in general, say at our international borders. they go through all this effort to dismantle and stop this effort but go through -- they put no effort into preventing illegal immigration and disincentivizing it. >> molly: your thoughts on this trespassing supposedly in arizona when in reality there are a great number of people coming across? >> well, i agree with congressman. if the federal government wants to do something they should put time and energy to securing the border. instead it appears as though they are interested in filing lawsuits to actually take away border security measures such as what the governor of arizona is doing. i know that they are also suing governor of texas and others. i think they've got misplaced priorities at the end of the day. the federal government needs to be securing that border. they aren't doing that. it is a very clear to every american they aren't doing that. the numbers bear that out. the numbers will continue to get worse and worse.
8:15 am
historically -- seasonally we actually see lower numbers usually in the month of november, december and january because of the weather situation down on that border. it gets very cold at night in the desert. what you see and what is bearing out on the images that you are seeing the numbers are going up. so there is only one reason for that. only one reason, the policies of this administration continue to incentivize more of that illegal immigration every day. >> molly: thank you. we appreciate a couple minutes of your time. president biden is still pushing his plan to forgive millions in student debt but he also suggests the pandemic justified canceling all of that debt and now that the pandemic is over, what is going on with that? what's the back and forth on that? after democrats -- house republicans are giving a preview of their oversight proposals.

>> molly: president biden seemed to put covid in the rearview mirror in a pre-christmas address yesterday even though he recently said the pandemic was the reason to forgive $4 hundred billion in student debt. >> president biden: covid no longer controls our lives. our kids are back in school. people are back to work.
8:22 am
in fact, more people are working than ever before. americans are building again, innovating again, dreaming again. >> molly: those remarks come as a biden administration recently ex extended the pause on student loan payments through june 30th with debt relief plan still blocked in the court. the supreme court will hear arguments on the case in february. the president ordered the loan forgiveness in august 2nd 1/2 months ahead of the mid-term elections. marc thiessen. longer controls our lives as long as it allows him to control hundreds of billions that he can spend as he sees fit without authorization from congress. where does he get to authority to spend nearly $1 trillion on student relief without congress authorization. even nancy pelosi said he didn't have the authority to do thachlt he is using a 2003 law called the hero's act passed after the 9/11 attacks to make sure the men and women of the military who were called up to fight the terrorists didn't default on their loans during active duty service. he is using that law to forgive the loans of thousands of americans who never wore the uniform. it is an act of stolen valor and creates a problem for him because he has just argued in the supreme court that we should lift title 42 because the pandemic emergency is over but using the national emergency, what the law says in referring to the 9/11 attacks and
8:24 am
authorization for that loan forgiveness, he is using that pandemic emergency to forgive student loans. which is it? it is over when it's convenient and not over when it's not convenient for his policy preferences. >> molly: i want to touch on february the supreme court. harvard law professor doesn't have much hooch the plan will survive the supreme court. he says it put the program in deep freeze until it proceeds to most likely dismantle it. what do you think the court will ultimately decide? >> he is stretching this law beyond all recognition. the law clearly states the 2003 hero's act it is intended for people called up to active duty in a war or national emergency. and so none of these people who are getting loans forgiven are getting them forgiven because they were called up to active duty. the plain text of the law is clear as to its intentions. so i think he is going the lose no doubt.

>> molly: the student loan hand-out is one of the issues that house republicans will dig into next year after democrats spent this year laughing off the gop oversight aims and proposals. republicans laying out a roadmap of planned investigations once they have the subpoena power. could include agenda things related to border security, very disastrous afghanistan withdrawal, covid origins and hunter biden. house majority leader kevin mccarthy says former intel officials who dismissed the hunter biden laptop will have a lot to answer for. >> how will we hold that 51 intel individuals who signed the letter saying it was russia collusion that it wasn't real? let's get to the bottom of the problems that have been happening. >> molly: 2023 could be very interesting, marc. what do you think? >> 100%. look, for the last two years the democrats have been able to do whatever they wanted without any serious oversight from congress. they were able to spend
