storm leaving travelers stranded and causing devastating crashes like this 46 car pileup, three dead in that crash as the storm claims 12 lives across the nation. the intense winter weather rocking much of the country bringing frigid temperatures and hurricane force winds. carley: 200 million americans under winter weather warnings or advisories. one million customers are without power, such a dangerous time to be without power, part of the midwest reporting temperatures colder than mars if you can believe it, the arctic see smoke from lake michigan pushing into chicago as the air temperature hovers around 0 °. todd: more than 5500 flights already delayed to the day, thousands canceled, the cold air will last into next week. rick reichmuth has the forecast, this is no joke.

>> reporter: those flights were canceled the last couple days, takes a while to get started. there will be cold air and a rough day still. it is getting better weatherwise. this is the culprit that brought the cold air and snow, the snow totals were not bad but the wind caused white out conditions but for the most part this is beginning to loosen up. the cold air is firmly in place and that won't change quickly. 7 degrees in new york city, 21 in boston. we are going to watch lake affect snow. we had that massive storm in the buffalo area, we are talking 3 to 5 feet of snow in some spots but this time incredible cold air in place and you will be completely shut in. look at this. all these people without power, 200,000 people without power, 200,000 homes without power in the state of maine lose this cold air settled in without any power, check on your neighbors,

folks in the nation's midsection they are in trouble. carley: checking in your neighbors. neil: to those who asked for the bomb cyclone for christmas clearly got it. meanwhile one. $7 trillion omnibus spending bill is headed to president biden's desk after passing the house yesterday. carley: it includes controversial items with huge price tags and some lawmakers rang the alarm on careless spending. neil: to alexandria joins us with more. >> reporter: it passed in the house and overnight government shutdown was averted before the holiday but kevin mccarthy said adding to the debt to this degree is a stain on congress. >> it appears the season of giving will line the pockets of democrats special interests and stick hard-working americans with the tab. this is a monstrosity that is one of the most shameful acts i have ever seen in this body. the appropriations process has

failed the american public. carley: the one. $7 trillion goes to defense spending, $787 billion to domestic programs, $45 billion for military and humanitarian aid to ukraine. it heads to president biden's desk. individual appropriation bills should have been passed rather than something so large. >> it is a complete sham, it is a fraud. we are spending money we don't have. go home and sell your project. go home and talk about the pork you are bringing home but you are destroying the united states of america. >> reporter: steny hoyer blaming members of his own party for failing to pass spending bills and forcing a rush into something this large. >> the senate had not passed a single appropriations bill. that out out to be unacceptable. 5535 of us sent to represent

the american people in a responsible way. this sweeping passage is anything but garbage. >> reporter: tween 9 republicans voted in favor of passing the bill and only one democrat voted no, alexandria ocasio cortez who added spending provisions to it before pulling her support. in a statement she wrote campaign in a promised my constituents to oppose additional expansion and funding for ice and dhs in the absence of long overdue immigration reform. the reason in the dramatic increase in defense spending, i voted no on today's on the best bill. 230 house members filed letters to vote by proxy meaning they weren't there, they are only supposed to do that if sick with covid. republicans see that as a policy being abused and how to do away with it once they gain control of the house next month. carley: can't have homeland security spending.

is capitol hill pretty quiet? i know one of the motivating factors getting the bill signed was so all the lawmakers could go home for christmas. >> reporter: many already have, that is the issue republicans have. they couldn't be here first to pass $1.7 trillion. that is unfair to the public. it is normally easy this time of day. neil: to marry christmas. carley: some thoughts. todd: rand paul talked about this bill, those who are seinfeld fans realize he's disappointed in you people and has a list of all the grievances, the ways you, meaning the u.s. congress has disappointed him. this list is ridiculous. would you like to take it? carley: what he is talking about is the fact that there is so much waste and spending when it comes to government so he

reveals, he puts out this annual list of grievances, airing of grievances when it comes to government spending and this year there has been $500 billion worth of waste and some of the items are unbelievable $118,000 to study if a character from avengers could snap his fingers in real life. by the national science federation. avengers. griff: but he is not real? why are we studying him? carley: $690,000 to study the romance between parents by hhs, 3 million on watching hamsters fight on steroids. griff: i would watch that. griff: $200,000 on starbucks espresso machines.

that is a lot of money. $28 million on camouflage the did not fit the afghan environment and $4.5 billion of covid 19 injury disaster loans by the small business association, this was money paid out to people who fraudulently claimed they were a small business, wrapping up $3.5 million in covid billy funds spent on luxury cars all in one single year. griff: that is a lot of cars. carley: it is also a lot of waste and in this spending bill one of the reasons there were so many republicans to vote against it is all the waste and spending in this one. it did have some good things in it. 10% increase for defense spending and things like that and then you get down to what do i have here?

griff: it is 4051 pages. carley: to reimburse jordan, lebanon, egypt, tunisia, to tighten their border security. $65 million to restore the population to $3.6 million for georgia hiking trail named after former first lady michelle obama, pet projects lawmakers putting these funding bills to make it easier to get reelected next year but this is your money. griff: we all view this through the lens of our children and they will be saddled with this debt. for us, what this means is another 1.7 trillion pricked printed dollars will hurt inflation, and take recession into next year but our kids have to pay this bill when it becomes due and republicans and democrats on capitol hill are responsible for that. this is shameful, this will hurt our country.

todd: political cartoonists are having fun with this. you see santa with the giant omnibus spending bill for this little girl saying merry christmas, it is a little bill. this one which shows literally the omnibus bill going down the chimney with santa, obviously it doesn't fit, he is stuck, it is ridiculous. griff: the vice president is not happy with the media coverage she is getting. she things we in the media, not just fox news but all members of the media are being too hard on her, she complains they don't cover her strengths in leadership and as a reminder here are the things she is tasked with leading, we will leave it to you to decide if she is doing a bang up job, start with the border crisis, national space council chair, tough to screw that one up, election reform, ambassador to

small business, access to high-speed internet. the border literally could not be more of a disaster. i am not going to step over my skis on this. i will let you take that. the rest of the things on that list, she is doing a horrible job on most if not all of them. carley: she spoke to washington post reporter it had this to say, there are things that i have done as vice president, to demonstrate the strength of my leadership as vice president but have not received the kind of coverage i think the dobbs decision did receive. if you are the loudest voice defending your record you are on the losing side. griff: we've seen pick cases of people leaving her office, she said an exodus of staffers in the first 2 years and it is largely because of her own doing and the way she reacted in the moments the spotlight was on the vice president as

a full on cackle. let's turn to headlines. we started with a fox news alert, one person dead and another grazed by a bullet in the shooting in minnesota, the suspect reportedly opening fire after an altercation between two groups killing a 19-year-old man, the shooter has not been arrested but they lifted the lockdown late last night. the ex-girlfriend of ftx founder sam bank superman-fried facing 110 years in prison before agreeing to cooperate with prosecutors in a plea deal monday. caroline ellison admitting she knew what she had sam bank superman-fried did was wrong when she was understanding new york. bank superman-fried facing 8 charges including wire and securities fraud, he is due back in court january 3rd. forget about where is waldo. brainteaser, where is rudolph? hungarian graphic artist which is what griff's original job was getting into news, makes puzzles and brainteasers like this want to tolerate holidays and on her special events.

griff: customs and border protection releasing november numbers showing record-breaking 233,000 encounters, the highest number on record. 67,000 of those encounters were processed for deportation under title 42 leading officials on the edge of impact when the policy expires. or to react this tom homan. merry christmas.

what do you make of this friday night done? why did they wait until friday night heading into christmas to release these november numbers? >> they always drop the numbers on friday night but this time i think the reason they waited so long was the omnibus bill. they did not want the numbers released, who was effective anyway? too many republicans voted for it but these numbers were to come out, maybe a few more congressman or senators would say we can no longer take this, another record-breaking mark, we need to do something about border security but we don't know how turned up the on a bus was with security so that was disappointing. the administration, just because you are so terrible. griff: there is no border

enforcement money but to nerd out a little bit on page 753 there is $1.9 billion for non-detention border management requirements. what is the $2 billion going for? >> assessing the language of the bill none of this is to be used for border security efforts, we are in the middle of the most historic crisis ever. i can't believe a single republican senator or congressman wrote this bill. what a terrible crisis we have, national security crisis when it comes to making a difference, they vote for bill and gave nothing to it, this bill does nothing, 300 agents, border patrol, border patrol -- nobody wants the job because they have been thrown under the bus by the administration. they can't do the job that is hard to do, they violated -- enforce the law, border patrol is having a hard time, does

nothing for them. griff: there has been 475,000 migrant encounters with title 42 in place. what happens? what does it look like when and if that lifts? >> if they left title 42, 80% to 90% of agents, you are dealing with these groups, therefore if title 42 is lifted, more from across the line which means more agents get pulled off of charles which means more fentanyl comes across the border killing more americans, more suspected terrorists can cross the border because the border is wide open. it means sex trafficking of women and children. this is catastrophic and if they end title 42 it will get worse but hear me now, this administration, they could turn the remain and mexico program on today.

stripes to save for their retirement, very important changes taking place when inflation is so high, personal savings decline, even lower than it was before the pandemic because people are struggling in this economy, need to prepare for retirement, this is an important piece of legislation. griff: i want to put up the bullet points we want to focus on, employer contributions for student loan payments, increase age for minimum distributions up to 72, 73 i believe, for our generation will be 75 in 10 years. help employees build and access emergency savings, enhanced the savers credit and make it easier for part-time workers to save. what do you want to focus on? >> great stuff. the emergency savings provisions important, so many are hesitant to save money because they are afraid they will need to tap into their savings and pay a penalty if

they drawdown from their 401(k) particularly middle or lower income americans who may not have that flex ability, when temperatures are in the teens. this provision will give people the peace of mind to put money into their retirement, knowing they can avoid the penalty, the tax penalty if an emergency situation arises. that is important to give people a piece of mind they need to save money for their entire retirement. todd: having people save and not spend really help bring down the inflationary pressures the rest of the $1.7 trillion layered on top of the other government spending really put us in. >> that is an essential point. a lot of people particularly on the left want to tax our way money to move it to government coffers. the theory is if we tax people they don't have money to spend and if they don't have money to

spend they can't exacerbate inflation. a better solution is to encourage people to save money. they are not contribute into inflation if they are putting that money in a 401(k) or ira and get to keep that money instead of moving it into the government coffers again. an important way to battle inflation is not a silver bullet but it will help. todd: i love the minimum distribution extension. people in our generation are not stopping work at 70 and a half. we will be going deep, deep into our 70s if not our 80s. i don't need that money forced into me at 70. i need it when i'm 85, 90, this will hopefully allow that to be the case. thank you, appreciate it. carley: starting in georgia police officer in atlanta going out of his way, a homeless man in a hotel room, the apartment praising him saying great job, officer, for your heartfelt act of service. and other people struggling to

approaches north america. we have fighters from canada, though cia teams, f-15s, f-16s and f-22s to ensure safe passage around the globe for santa claus. todd: there are no known threats towards santa other than misbehaving children who did not listen to their parents. >> there are no threats to santa claus. if i told the kids today the only threat would be if you are not happy or not in bed. make sure you are in better on time. carley: outside of tracking santa, tell us about norad and what you do every day outside christmas eve. >> norad is a binational command with allies in canada. we tracked threats to north america, threats that emanate from the air domain and maritime domain and if they become a threat, we would prosecute those threats to north america. we do that each and every day, 365 days a year and this one special day we get to track

santa claus. todd: how crucial is rudolph's knows? >> are a crucial. our satellites which are infrared capable, when rudolph gets airborne that knows shows up, it does put off her heat signature and the satellite capabilities track that heat signature. it gives them a safe passage as well to commercial areas where other aircraft can see them and also gives him deicing capabilities. the weather we have now star trek for santa claus. griff: to make it clear, this year norad has the ability to know if children are in bed or not, is that correct? >> santa has that ability, norad does not have that ability. that is who i would be worried about, making sure you are in bed for santa claus. carley: santa doesn't want to give out the cold. you can track santa at noradsanta.org or call 800-hr-norad.
