erin shaun. the storm making -- eric shawn. in ohio at least 3 people were killed in a 46-car pile-up in whiteout conditions. also chaos at packed airports across the country where millions of passengers are stuck. more than 2 the ,000 flights canceled, 6,000 delayed already today. anita spoke to montana's governor earlier today about the bone-chilling conditions there. >> we saw wind chill factors up to 75 degrees below 0, almost every community in the sate saw wind chill factors north of 50 degrees below 0. and what we learned in this time is that reliable energy supply is not a nice to have, it's a must have. it's a matter of public safety, and i'm just proud of the work that the state has done to keep the power on. rich: getting relief from all this, let's go right to meet rolingsz adam klotz for the latest. adam: hey there, rich. you know what?

things today slightly better than yesterday. that big winter storm that was the bringing the snow, the rain and the sleet, that's moved out, and we're left with frigid temperatures, however slightly warmer than yesterday. currents out there you're seeing single digits, teens, 20s. remember though yesterday a little bit colder than that. you sill have the wind moving across the country, and it does feel colder. plenty of spots feel like you're in the negative, negative 10, negative 20 the degrees in some of the coolest spots. and across the south a lot of places in the teens or 20 thes for your feels-like temperature this afternoon, and this freeze has dipped deep into the south as we have frost and freeze alerts from the rio grande valley, stretching around the gulf of mexico, getting into central florida, places that typically don't see this kind of cold air this far south. across florida, still in the florida panhandle in the middle 30s, but most of the states running in only the middle 40s until you hit 50 degrees in miami. this really cold air is going to

kind of linger, because i'm taking you all the way to tuesday. yes, it gets better, but it's still way below average. tuesday into wednesday, into thursday, finally you start to see a little normalcy return to some of these areas, temperatures getting back up into the 70s by the end of next week. so it's going to take a while to kind of break big cold. i'll leave you with your christmas forecast, and you still see cold air slightly better, we're expecting a little bit of snow there. again in the plains, entirely different system. temperatures in chicago for tomorrow 14 degrees across the southern tier of the country, you're seeing 30s and 40s. and then here along the east coast a lot of sunshine, but getting back to a little more seasonal temperatures, closer to 30 degrees. boy, it's a big winter system, and there's still a lot of cold air out there, and we're going to continue to watch it. rich? relationship rich adam klotz, thank you. anita? anita: hundreds of thousands are sill without power on this bitterly cold christmas eve across the country.

currently, maine and north carolina are seeing the worst outages. in some areas power companies are intentionally turning off electricity hoping to prevent widespread blackouts. alexis mcadams is lye with more on -- live with more on how the storm is causing a holiday disaster across the country. alexis. >> reporter: hi. that's right, aimee that, yeah, i'm here with all the good news on this christmas eve. there's a lot of problems all across the country with that dangerous weather pattern that has moved in, and right now it feels about 11 degrees here in new york city, and it's creating dangerous road conditions and even power outages. first the road conditions and crashes. take a look specifically in the midwest which was hit very hard. this is out in ohio, it's a 46-car pile-up that left at least 3 people dead and several others injured. hose crashes left that turnpike closed for hours. right now millions of americans are dealing with those bitterly cold temperatures. the midwest slammed by this winter storm, they even had the

national guard help out in northwest indiana as their roadways turned into sheets of ice. cars, trucks and even semis slid right off those icy roads and into ditches there. this comes as millions of americans are dealing with blizzard-like conditions. some of the coldest temperatures as youd are out in montana, rather. check it out here, the national weather service in missoula creating their own snow cloud, throwing boiling water up into the -17 degree skies that turned into snowflakes immediately. a cool video but a very cold night. the main concern in the northeast is coastal flooding. you can see parts of long island left with more than 7 feet of standing water. >> so unexpected, the flooding all of a sudden. i'm taking my daughter to school, and the water's just rising from 105th down. of haven't seen it like since sandy. it felt like it was up to the door coming down going west, but i was able to get through, but other cars were starting to stop.

>> reporter: and right now that cleanup continues here mt. northeast and specifically in the new york area as you can see from that flooding, there's a lot of work to do, but the crews having a hard time because it is so cold outside. anita? anita: it may be cold, but it looks very festive, thank you for that live report, appreciate it. rich: it is a flightmare before christmas. passengers across the country stuck spending their christmas eve at the airport. and according to flightaware, more than 2,000 flights have been canceled so far today and more than 6,000 delayed. charles watson live at one of america's busiest airports, hartsfield-jackson in atlanta. back to you, charles. >> reporter: yeah, hey, good afternoon, rich. things remain busy here at hartsfield-jackson atlanta international airport. while the lines are moving pretty good and folks are getting by, we're still running into some folks who are having troubles making it onto their flights.

but people are keeping it positive. folks we've spoken to say, look, we're being optimistic, highly optimistic all many hopes that they'll make it home for christmas. >> i am not nervous. i think i'm going to make it even if it's late. i just have hope and confidence that i'll make it today. [laughter] >> it's a change, right? it's a change of pace, and i don't know, my outlook is a little different. i just try to embrace whatever comes our way these days. accept it, appreciate it. >> reporter: and despite the good attitudes though, the reality is that will have been thousands of delays and cancellations. as you mentioned, today alone there have been more than 6,000 delays and nearly 2 the,700 cancellations, some of the worst airports hit today have been in atlanta, chicago, new york and, no surprise, denver is. you can see some of the major airports nationwide on this flightaware misery map, the red

showing how many delays and cancellations are happening in realtime compared to how many of hose flights are actually getting out of the gates and getting to where they need to go on time. and look, rich, a lot of people traveling through airports across the country today it's been a frustrating few days for those folks who are, hopefully, making it homed today. one person who is not going to be delayed today, santa claus. you know, we've been tapping in with our sources with the norad tracker who says that santa is on track, already out there delivering toys to all the good little boys and girls across the world, rich. so there's a good holiday message for everybody. rich: charles watson with the good news will. i hear he's got airline status. charles watson in atlanta, thank you. [laughter] anita. anita: well, terrifying moments for holiday shoppers at the cup's biggest mall. -- country's biggest mall. one person was killed in a shooting at the mall of america in minnesota last night.

the mall was temporarily put on lock lockdown two days before christmas. police still trying to identify a suspect. alexandria hoff has more. >> reporter: the shooting happened during the prime time of last minute holiday shopping, just before 8 p.m. last night. according to the bloomington police department, an officer who was already are working inside of the mall of america heard gunshots fired from within the in order strom store. that officer then rushed to find a 19-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. life-saving measures were taken but were not successful. investigators say that security video revealed that an altercation had broken out between two groups of young men before one individual pulled out a gun and fired shots. a singer was among those inside the mall at the time. he was recording a video, the sound of gun shots, as you can see, led to pan if you can. the mall was placed under lockdown and hen evacuated. bloomington police chief booker hodges reflected on the sorrow of a family having to endure

christmas in the wake of such a loss. he spoke with contempt for the shooter. >> we have an incident where if someone decides that they want to pull out a gun and shoot somebody with a complete lack of disrespect for human life, i still don't know what we can do to stop that. i mean, this is absolutely ridiculous. i mean, i can't even think of another word, this is just flat out stupid. i mean, you're going to go out here and shoot somebodiesome. >> reporter: no arrests have been made at this time, and chief hodges promised to lock up the shooter and anyone who helps hose involved evade capture. according to the ap, several players for the new york giants were inside the mall at the time of the shooting but made it out safely. another shopper's clothing was reportedly grazed by a bullet, they were also unharmed. the mall of america reopened earlier today. in washington, alexandria of, fox news. rich: the ninth installment of the twitter files revealed more

coordination between twitter and the government. not the fbi. this latest document dump shows the social media platform also worked with the pentagon, the state department and the cia to monitor and censor content. journalist matt taibbi who posted the files says the fbi acted as, quote, a doorman for so much government coordination that twitter execs had a tough time keeping track of it. anita? anita: well, house republicans say they will not hold back their subpoena power when they take the majority in just 10 days. a closer look at who and what they are looking to investigate coming up next. ♪ ♪

♪ rich: cuts onlies and border protection last night announced last month if it saw the highest number of migrant encounters in any november ever. a live look now at the southern border where freezing temperatures had migrants scrambling to find shelter. christina coleman joins us live with the latest. >> reporter: hi, rich. yeah, the federal government released the new border encounter numbers in a data dump last might as many people were busy gearing up for this christmas weekend, but the staggering statistics did not go unnoticed. they shattered another record.

as you mentioned, more than 233,700 border encounters last month alone. this is the largest amount of border encounters for a november on record compared to last year that's a roughly 30% increase. meantime, the drug smuggling on the border this week has been terrible. you may have heard that popular warning going around now about fentanyl, one pill can kill? well, take a look at this. on wednesday night cbp officers seized more than 230,000 fentanyl pills mt. spare tire of a car. the next day they found approximately 83 # ,000 fentanyl pills hidden throughout a vehicle, that's more than 1 million pills seized by cbp officers within a 24-hour time span at a port of entry this week aend loan. this week alone. >> so we're capturing all these millions of fentanyl pills, but we don't know what we're not missing. it's obviously very easy to bring across the border fentanyl if you're crossing the border,

and millions of people are crossing the border all of the time. >> reporter: it's really scary just to think about. this is new video we got today from a source at the border showing dozens of migrants crossing through water out in the cold in brownsville, texas, yesterday with their young children. you can only imagine what's floating around in that water. many fear humanitarian crisis is going to get worse if title 42 is lifted, the trump pandemic-era policy that was set to lapse week, but after ongoing legal battles over it, the supreme court is now weighing whether to keep this policy many place. rich? rich: christina coleman, thank you. >> in 11 days this all changes. we are going to reclaim this body's integrity in service to the american people. of after this institution covers itself in disgrace one last time

under democrat one-party rule. a new direction is coming 11 days, republicans will deliver. anita: house minority leader kevining mccarthy promising big changes when republicans take control of the house come january 3rd. among their priorities will be investigating a slew of issue is involving president biden and his family, his administration's handling of the border crisis and the withdrawal from afghanistan and the collusion between the white house and social media companies. let's bring in kaylee mcghee white, deputy editor of restoring america at the washington examiner. happy holidays, merry christmas to you. there's a lot to choose from for republicans when it comes to investigating a plethora of issues and scandals. but in an op-ed in your newspaper, the washington examiner, it says the gop should be very careful especially e when it comes to investigating the president's son. here's a quote, the doj is already investigating hunter biden for attacks and firearm

crimes. republicans should let those investigations play out, intervening later and only if there is evidence hat doj showed favoritism toward the president's son. your thoughts on that. >> yeah. you're right, i mean, there's been policy mishap after policy mishap over past two years that it's really tempting that republicans immediate to play catch-up and get to every single issue they possibly can. but as we wrote in our editorial, republicans need to be selective about which issues to actually spend time investigating because a congressional investigation, if done right, should be thorough, it should take time, and it should get to the very root of the issue. but there's also the fact that house republicans' main job this next year is to be a foil for the biden administration to prevent biden administration from getting any more of their agenda through. that is hair main responsibility for the next two years -- their main responsibility. we do not hi that the hunter

biden administration should be a top priority. we believe that there are other issues like the border crisis, like big tech collusion that affect americans' lives much more directly and demand for immediate attention. anita: speaking of those issues, a number of gop leaders have talked about the things they think the party should concentrate on, the things that they would like to investigate. let's put that list up. you mentioned some of them. at the top is border security, afghanistan withdrawal, covid origins, student loan debt relief and hunter biden lastly. interesting that border security is is number one. realistically with the slim majority in the house next year, how can republicans change what's happening on the border? what do you think? >> right. well, an investigation into the border crisis would force biden administration officials to answer questions like did you know that revoking title 42 or moving many that direction would cause a surge in migration? were there warnings given to the biden administration ahead of

time that, had they heeded hose warnings, could have prevented the influx we're experiencing now? there are also questions about whether the federal government is providing sufficient aid to border towns that are completely overrun right now by migrants. there are a lot of things that republicans can do to point to very important answers that president biden should be forced to answer at this point. anita: yeah. and i think we're going to be seeing those investigations certainly in the new year. when you look at that a list of things we just talked about, what is your sense of what voters are most concerned with from that list? or maybe something else. >> what we saw during the midterm elections that the number two issues were inflation and the economy. so i think that wills, you know, there should -- that there is, there should be something house republicans try to do on that front since they did campaign on promising to at least rein in the biden administration's spending. but we also know that voters care about immigration issues a lot. they're very concerned about the implications of a wide open southern border and what that

means for their own security, what that means for the economy. so, you know, that is up there on voters' list of concerns. anita: yeah, no doubt. very quickly, what do you think we see first? what investigation hearings will we see first on capitol hill once the new congress takes oversome. >> i wouldn't be surprised if an investigation into the origins of covid is up there. we've already seen a lot from republicans' offices into this matter, and when they take the majority and they have even more power to subpoena certain officials and find out what the federal government knew about the leak of covid, i think that's probably going to be one of the first things that we see. anita: yeah. that will be very interesting and, certainly, a lot ofwant to. caylee mcdee white, thank you very much for joining us today and morally christmas. >> thank you. merry christmas. anita: well, be sure to tune in to "the fox report" tonight when congressman-elect russell frye

stripped of royal titles due to his ties to convicted sex traffickers jeffrey epstein and jee lain maxwell. reports say he will keep his lodge on the windsor family estate for now. turning to the war in ukraine where russia is reportedly considering troop expansions with stations near nato borders. the british ministry of defense says russian president vladimir putin has been presented with plans to boller is his military -- bolster his military to 1.5 million people, about 30%. let's bring in kiron skinner, a fox news contributor and professor of international relations and politics at pepperdine university, also a research fellow at the hoover institution and senior adviser at the heritage foundation. ms. skinner, thanks so much for joining us this afternoon. i want to get to this report now prosecute u.k. ministry of defense -- from the u.k. ministry of defense. is it conceivable that russia

could expand its military forces by this much given how substantial they've had, problems that heavy had in the war in ukraine? -- that they've had? >> rich, you're asking the right question. on december 21st we got the reports that the defense min stir -- minister, as noted, in russia was presenting plan to expand the number of military officers. but they had trouble, remember, back in october when 300 additional reservists were being called up. there were defectors, there were many officers leaving the country. they've had to rely, reports state, on mercenaries and hired hands to help them. the idea that there can be a russian military fighting force that's ready to go at is -- at is-- at 1.5 million is a bit of a stretch, but they can try. they've suffered some major

defeats this fall alone in areas that they had the russian military under putin declared victory we saw a russian retreat. i'm referring to kharkiv and to kherson. these were big losses just a few months ago. so they need a bigger military, but whether they can have it, i think, is a really open question. rich: and this also goes to the question of can they quip more troops. -- e give more -- equip more troops. they've had massive problems with that already, right? >> they have. and i failed to mention that they also have morale problems and training problems. so this has been a big audit on russia's military, this war. it has really demonstrated to the world that at every level of performance it is a weak military. it doesn't perform well many battle -- in battle.

many, as i said, defectors. morale is low. this is not a good formula going into the fall, into the winter. but what i think we will see more of is the attacks from the air by the russians on critical infrastructure in ukraine. they've already hit and pummeled probably 50% of the emergency infrastructure -- energy infrastructure in the country. that's very dangerous for the ukrainians in frigid winter that they are facing. and that a may be the way that they stay in the game, so to speak, while they attempt to deal with what is really most likely a shrinking military. rich: there's been an incredible resolve from ukrainian forces, but you mentioned they're likely going to stay after it, the russians will. here's what the white house has to say about the resolve that they have in the russian government at the very top. >> it could end today if

mr. putin would just pull all his rooms out. clearly, that's not going to happen, putin is showing quite the opposite indication, that he's going to continue to prosecute this war. we've got to make sure we can help the ukrainians succeed on the battlefield so that if and when -- and only president zelenskyy can determine this -- but and when he's ready to sit down and talk to the russians, he can do so from a position of strength. so he can succeed at that as he has on the battle feel. rich: can the west get vladimir putin to change his mind? >> it will be a hard sell, but the west is working very hard at supporting ukraine. about 60%, maybe more, of military aid to ukraine in 022 has come -- 2022 has come from the united states. but there are 40-50 other donor nations, and the european union in particular is the biggest humanitarian aid supporter of the country. the u.s. isn't far behind.

there's been really a global response to this conflict. russia doesn't have anything close, and and i think that has probably been something of a big surprise. and not just the nations that i've mentioned. in the high north in europe, you've got two countries, sweden and fin ifland, inching closer and closer to joining nato which puts nato in a very strategic position mt. far north of -- in the par north of europe against russia. so it's being encircled by a global community of economic, humanitarian and military support for the country that it invaded. and it's the -- there's really no way out but the negotiating table at some point. and hopefully soon. rich: and very quickly, is there a concern in the united states about this being a distraction, this pivot to asia that we've been talking about for a decade

and a half and the supplier base for the u.s. military? >> yes, absolutely, there is a concern. there are multiple concerns. it's not as president west or the united states -- as if the west or the united states, you know, there aren't divisions throughout the community of nations and institutions that are supporting. there's concerns about guns versus butter and, you know, as a global, as the global economy is suffering for a range of reasons starting with covid, this war, energy and so on. so there's a concern than how much the u.s. can sustain conflict given those very serious concerns. also mt. united states -- in the united states we've got the pop lists on one end of the political spectrum and the progressives on the other, and they actually meet at the point of view that we should not be in conflict at all. i don't think the new congress is headed in that direction

because of support this year that that's been bipartisan in nature, diseasedly so -- decidedly so. but those are factors that have to be considered, and i think vladimir putin is hoping that they grow, i doubt it. rich: kiron skinner, thanks as always. anita: kurdish activists and anti-racism groups protesting in paris in response to an attack at a kurdish cultural center that killed three people yesterday. police say the attack was aimed at foreigners. ryan chilcote is live in loan bonn -- london with the story. what more can you tell us? >> reporter: yeah, hi, anita. well, a second day of protests urned to clashes today in paris. they started relatively peaceful, mostly peaceful, but as the day went on, they descended into violence and mayhem. as you said, kurdish activists, anti-racism activists gathered in the thousands. it was really kind of almost a jovial event, many of them

coming out with flags. there to solemnly protest and to mourn those people who were killed friday in what was clearly a racially-motivated attack. but as sometimes happens, some of these protesters turned on the police and turned to violence. the second day now of protests and clashes in paris, it all kicked off yesterday after a 69-year-old parisian man stormed into a cultural center and nearby restaurant killing three people and wounding three others before he was wounded and apprehended by the police. both the cultural center and that restaurant are frequented by kurds, ethnic minority in france with ties to the middle east. police say the assailant had been in prison for an attack he committed on migrants last year and had just been released earlier this month. many of the protesters and people who showed up at the vigil yesterday say they just don't feel safe in france. race-related attacks have been on the rise for a good while. the french government says they

mete neither the bitter cold putting freeze on football. today's game between the tennessee titans and houston texans in nashville was delayed by an hour due to rolling blackouts. crews at nissan stadium also a had to defrost the field yard by yard with snowblowers and heated air. game did start just after 2 p.m. eastern time, the temperature 20 degrees making it the coldest ever played in titans' history. brave fans who came out today. rich. rich: anita, that same massive storm has left tens of thousands of people without power in

buffalo, new york. the blizzard causing whiteout conditions and bringing much of the city and region to a standstill. one local official says it may be the worst storm in the community's history. that's buffalo. fox weather correspondent max gorden has more. >> reporter: well, the wind continues to whip, and the snow continues to come down in sheets here in the buffalo area. as you can see behind me on route 5, trucks at a standstill. a ralph ban is in place -- a travel ban is in place in the city of buffalo and surrounding counties. officials saying don't go out on the roads, it is simply too dangerous. and for many that meant being stuck in their vehicles. we're here at gas station where many people hunkered down last night and might have to do so again. this is one of few places to go where they have food and it's the warm. police and fire officials coming here to escort pokes over to warming shelters and just trying to get them somewhere safe.

unfortunately, our crew was one of those that had to hunker down and sleep in their cars last night. as we were trying to make our way back to our hotel, whiteout conditions made travel just too dangerous. we had to pull over. you couldn't see more than 20 feet in front of you. luckily, we had pull tanks of gas, and. we were able to keep warm, but it was a brutal night. a night experienced by many here in the buffalo area. first responders were out in force trying to help people who were strand thed, but in some parts of the city and in western new york emergency services simply aren't available. the roads are just ooh dangerous, and the firefighters and police can't get out to folks. erie county has confirmed that two people died because emergency responders were not able to get out to them, and this blizzard is not over. blizzard conditions will continue throughout the day, around 2 the feet of snow is expected to fall today and gusts of 60-65 miles per hour. back to you.

family, and we'll open a few gifts. you know, family gifts. of course, we have to wait until tomorrow to open santa's gifts. but i'll be back here tomorrow working, i think you're going to be working too, right? rich: i will. i have -- i think i'm at 1:00 tomorrow and then all throughout next week as well9 got some family in town. and as for what i'm looking for for the holidays, i like to run outdoor, and with latest arctic the blast, i think warm weather running gear is what ill like to see under the tree tomorrow, i'll tell you that. anita: yeah. i love that. i love running fear too. i'm also a little bit of a runner. but, you know, i think most of country is just hoping for nice warm weather and probably some power. a lot of the country is still facing blackouts and power shortages and cold temperatures, so maybe santa can bring some warm weather for some of the country. it sounds like it's getting a little better. we heard from mike tobin in chicago today, and and he said the flight situation there was

getting a little better, people were getting out, less delays, less cancellations. so i think the picture is looking a little better. rich: it is. and adam klotz was telling us earlier that he was anticipating the things are going to warm up a little bit. take a look at the flightaware misery map every time you get to this in the winter especially, you know, d.c.'s cleared up a little bit here. there were some major delays in houston yesterday. that appears to have cleared out. seattle's had problems, r.a., the west coast. -- l.a. and you think about just the follow-on effect that this weather has throughout the system, it really does ripple out. and hen you take a look at the power outage tracker, anita, top outages in north carolina south of where we are, 262,000, maine at 1 is 70,000, new york at 49,000, virginia, new hampshire more than 30,000. st a real mess out will especially on the east coast, anita. anita: let's get a quick check from adam klotz because the deep

freeze still with us. adam, give us a quick forecast for the rest of the christmas holiday here. adam: you guys were talking about all those people without power and, unfortunately, it's not going to warm up at least immediately because, boy, it is still really cold across the country. you're looking at plenty of spots still down in single digits, into the teens and tos . yes, that is warmer than yesterday, but you add in windy conditions, and it is sill windy, the feels-like temperature is still down will. everything in those pinks and purples, those are negatives. otherwise still down into the teens as far south as gulf coast, and that's where we see tons of these frost and please alerts, still crapping around into central -- wrapping around into central florida. it never gets that cold will, and it is. see that? temperatures in the 30s, dropping down into the 40s in the middle of the state. sill frigid almost everywhere. do you want a little bit of a break? this'll kind of show it to you because this is where the cold air's the least common to see,
