9:02 am
thousands are still without power at this hour, crews are working hard to get it restored, they said the power should be back on by later this evening or early tomorrow morning but very difficult because trees have been going into power lines and many of the substations are frozen over, tough conditions to work in. a travel ban is still in effect here in erie county that's because roads are too difficult to drive on, too dangerous to drive on, many folks had to spend nights in the car just like we did because they had to pull over during the height of the blizzard, unfortunately the death toll continues to also rise due to the storm, seven deaths in new york have been confirmed, one man died in buffalo he was found frozen to death. two others died because emergency crews simply could not get out to them the roads were too bad and then for others have been found in snowbanks were dead in their vehicles frozen. it is a tough situation for a

what is responsible, the deepening area of low pressure dragging down the canadian air and this is helping file up the lake affect snowmachine off the lake erie and lake ontario where specifically watertown is just getting blasted with snow as we speak. where max gordon was south of buffalo they picked up 43 inches of snow with more snow on the way, check out the snowfall forecast through tomorrow, that is an additional 8 - 12 inches and watertown the bull's-eye of orange that uc is 24 - 36 inches of additional snow on top of what you are depicted. it's one of the reasons why we have blizzard warnings in effect for watertown that is not expected till 7:00 p.m. it is an all-day thing for us. we are going to be fighting

through, here again is some good news on christmas day you could use some, right. for today, this is what were anticipating, 200 million americans below average in terms of temperatures, notice that that number starts to decline as we head into wednesday, by the time to get into the upcoming work week, the middle of the second half of the workweek we will be talking about temperatures returning, not just back to normal but way above normal and i feel like that cannot come soon enough for so many along the midwest in the eastern seaboard as well. even in new york city, to be nice to finally catch a little bit of a break from the arctic blast. >> no doubt about it, real quick i definitely want some for christmas next year, well done my friend, very christmasy, "fox weather" meteorologist michael estime. thank you. check more of all the stuff with weather, you can get continuing coverage on the winter weather storm, download the app for free at foxweather.com.

you can also use your phone to scan the qr code conveniently right on your screen. anita: that was quite the outfit brian. santa and his reindeer have come and gone, thank goodness, millions of would-be air travelers are stuck airports as the storm cancels or delays thousands of flights. the brutal weather also snarling travel on roads and rails. charles watson live it wanted americans busiest airport at jackson international in atlanta. charles, it looks medium behind you, a little bit of steady stream of people but not too crowded there, how is it going? >> it is a surprisingly busy day christmas day at hartsfield jackson atlanta international airport and you can bet there are a lot of folks off camera and some of the tsa lines who are hoping along with thousands more across the country that santa gives them the gift of being home for the holiday today because prior to today it's been an absolute nightmare for tens

of thousands of travelers, cancellations and delays have plagued airports nationwide because of the deadly arctic blast we've been dealing with over the last few days, let's track the flights, today were looking at 2800 delays in more than 1500 cancellations across the country, not great but it is better, lower than 24 hours ago and it could be a sign that conditions are improving at transit hubs across the nation but make no mistake about it, airlines and airports are not out of the woods just yet. here in atlanta the brutal temperatures snap pipes flooding the delta lounge in the terminal. you saw what looks like near buffalo new york max gordon's the airports shut down on friday and officials in buffalo say it will remain closed through 11:0s and visibility are expected to

improve. >> i feel bad it's canceled so many plans for the holidays for people and were just really fortunate the families been okay and traveling. >> i'm used to it, coming from the midwest, your used to the snow and your used to the crazy changes of weather. this is natural, always being prepared for the weather. >> drivers on the roadway have a pretty easy, clear roads expected, come wednesday and tuesday aaa expects the big crowds on the roadways to return. buckle up. anita: no question, you still got 1500 plus flight cancellations today. a lot of people are not getting the christmas that they expected, hopefully over the next few days they get to where they need to go. charles watson live in atlanta, thank you so much for the live report. >> the dangerously cold conditions not stopping the

highway and running into the brush after troopers spotted them. the human smuggling attempt was stopped but so many others are not, last night the department of homeland security released a statement saying dhs continues to lead a whole government strategy to secure the border and build safe orderly and humane immigration processes. there are 23000 agents and officers working to secure the southwest border in the u.s. government continues to work closely with our partners in mexico to reinforce and coordinated operations to target human smuggling organizations and bring them to justice. a lot of people are not impressed with the statement. take a listen. >> there are seven statements in the last ten days of dhs web website, not one that says working to reinforce the border better, not won this is a border patrol agents in the front line of dhs the tools that they needed the tools that they know that work to secure and solve

the problem on our southwest border. the vice president has been out of touch on this issue probably for most of her career. >> for now, definitely no slowdown insight on this crisis at the border. the new cbp number show more than 233,000 border encounters last month in november, that the largest amount border encounters for november on record. brian: migrants and their families left out below freezing temperatures, humanitarian crisis continues. christina coleman, thank you and merry christmas. >> merry christmas. anita: president biden is expected to sign the massive $1.7 trillion spending package, now that it's past the house and the senate, critics are still slamming the bill for what they call unnecessary spending, the latest on this from washington coming up next. oh man.

massive $1.7 trillion spending bill that president biden is expected to sign into law. this as the biden family celebrates christmas at the white house. aishah hasnie is live in washington with more on all of this, great to see you, merry christmas and happy holidays. >> afternoon to merry christmas as well congress may be out for the holidays but this bill is still causing major aftershocks here in washington. in the last minute -- the massive $1.7 trillion government funding bill also called the omnibus, 18 senate republicans and nine house republicans help democrats pass this bill and they really were applauding the 800 billion in defense funding, democrats taking a victory lap. >> many senate republicans knew that this package was a bipartisan deal, they think them for their willingness to work together in delivering for american people,, quite frankly
9:17 am
i find these endless increases in defense spending your after year to be appalling. >> others say what's appalling in this bill is all pork and they blame their colleagues for rushing through this process right before christmas and here is representative pat fallon on "sunday morning futures" this morning. >> $3 million for a be friendly highway and $3 million for lgbtq museum in new york. it was absolute piece of garbage and that's why i voted not only no but hell no. >> house majority leader kevin mccarthy is already threatening to kill bills sponsored by senate republicans who voted for this bill if he become speaker next year, he still doesn't have the votes for that. the ironic part is that the very reason for rushing this through happened anyway congress had to pass yet another stopgap bill for another week at least since is going to take a couple of
9:18 am
days for the omnibus to reach the president's desk. anita. >> funny how it works out like that. anita: may be some of the members who didn't get to read the bill will spend their christmas vacation reading it. >> doubtful. anita: great to see you, thank you for the report. brian: for more on this in a look at the new congress to be sworn in next week let's bring in democratic strategist and pollster doug scholl in. merry christmas and happy holidays. thank you for spending holidays with me. let's start off with this, congress arguably their bigotry possibility is the power of the purse, it is the power that they wield and yet 4155 pages, $1.7 trillion and this is done and the dead of night with no real debate, what, why? >> it is a sign and a symbol of how broken down, polarized,
9:19 am
divided our politics is and how really policymaking in good government has lost its way, we are focused only on short termism and really, it's a very sad commentary for christmas. i want to bring up number two from kim strauss on the wall street journal, we want to know if your senator approves about the raise in the food and drug administration to micromanager mascara or killing off fishing operations are leading athletes that service academies get a waiver to play professional sports, good luck, members of both parties will say that they voted for this turkey solely to avoid a government shutdown and they'll dock questions on the other major changes, 0 accountability only this is not lock it is by design, there are people that say why not take the $800 billion of defense spending
9:20 am
and vote on that separately. a real debate can be had without the hostagetaking on the other money that needs to be spent. >> there are two reasons it was all put together because it was not enough time and i daresay not enough of a political will on both sides to get it done, we need the increase in defense spending president zelenskyy couldn't have made a more compelling case to congress, i believe it was wednesday, bottom line there is a lot of pork in there that doesn't make sense, there was also very little if anything in the bill for border security. this is an imperfect bill passed just to keep the government going and to provide the necessary defense spending. but this is how to run a country which are run a government, that is for sure. brian: doug we had a record-setting november and the border over 233,000 migrants crossing illegally in one month.
9:21 am
this bill offers something like $16.7 billion for border patrol. that is minuscule when you consider the crisis, are you worried that democrats are still not seen this crisis for what it is and that the party may have to face these consequences in 2023 and beyond. >> i am worried, i think we literally and metaphorically dodged a bullet in the midterms but candidly, i think with the aggregation of title 42 and the likelihood we're going to have a greater stream of migrants, i worry that this problem is going to get worse and i would urge my party to do responsible border control at the same time they push for a pathway to citizenship for those that are here playing by the rules. brian: at a comprehensive immigration reform do you see that happening. >> i hope we can get something done to tighten up the border to secure our country but also say
9:22 am
to those who pay their taxes, work hard that they have a right to become citizens, yes. >> the house republican leader kevin mccarthy up for the speakership of the house, he did not want this bill at all and people were looking at his pounding of his chest as a way to win the speakership, he is trying to appease to the far right of his party, this is what chuck schumer, the leader of the democrats in the senate had to say. listen. >> i think you could be surprised at how much pull there will be a mccarthy once he is elected to move to the middle rather than to the hard right. if he is a smart politician you know that's the right place to go, that doesn't mean will always agree or get everything that we want but i think you're going to find bipartisanship continuing in the next congress. brian: doug what you make of that you think have a mccarthy pushes to the middle and two, do you expect bipartisanship?
9:23 am
>> first, i think everything that i see in everything that i hear is that the freedom caucus, the far right in the house is pushing mccarthy to the right as he made clear he is going to fight more spending bills, he's going to do a number of investigations abiding in the democratic administration. i don't expect bipartisanship, i expect more polarization and if kevin mccarthy literally has to sell his soul to get elected, i think the losers will be the american people, i would love for more bipartisanship and him moving to the center. i just don't think, brian, is going to happen. brian: doug, thank you again, merry christmas and happy holidays. we appreciate you. anita: christmas eve in ukraine marked exactly ten months since

what could this mean. let's bring in gordon chang, gait stone institute senior fellow and author of the coming collapse of china integrate u.s. china tech war, great to see you today, thank you for coming in on this christmas, merry christmas to you. >> merry christmas to you. anita: thank you. what do you make of this, china making overtures of improving relations with the west specifically the u.s. and europe and they're starting to talk about talking with russia, and they want to isolate the united states the european diplomacy is more determined that it is with the u.s. after president biden when she's inching in volley with a promise to send secretary of state blinken to beijing next year, the u.s. sent to senior envoys to china and they got a very cold reception, that's a real
9:35 am
indication that beijing is not that serious when it comes to improving relationships with us. they want us to comply with their demands and if we do so we can buy peace for a few moments but they're not really interested in any sort of meaningful relationship. anita: it does not seemed like it according to what you just said. also while they're saying that, china is still busy selling fentanyl to mexico and in turn those drugs and pouring across the u.s. border coming across the u.s. i want you to take a look at the recent headline from the wall street journal. it says sour u.s. china relations feed the fentanyl crisis, beijing has stopped cooperating in restricting the flow of chinese made chemicals that mexican cartels use to make the deadly drug. that does not sound the cooperation with the west, exactly like you're saying. >> it certainly isn't, we'd like to remember in china's total surveillance state, beijing knows what the large fentanyl gangs are doing and also the fentanyl gangs launder the
9:36 am
proceeds to the chinese state banking system, the problem here is that american presidents and this goes back quite some decades, we know exactly what's going on with fentanyl and yet we choose not to hold the communist party responsible. the communist party wants a fentanyl gangs to operate and until we understand that and act upon it, we are not quite to be able to deal with the problems. the wall street journal headline is misleading. it is not any question of cooperation, day-to-day, it's a question of a long-term decade-long plan on the part of the party. anita: yeah, and the willpower to do something about it, even from the united states. let me turn the topic here, what did you make about the lack of support from the white house for the protesters in china who were protesting the draconian covid policy that kept people locked up without food and medication.
9:37 am
i want to read a quote from dan hoffman, former cia officer and statement chief, he said i witness firsthand in my career how our closest allies appreciated presidents who publicly defended democracy, the u.s. should never hesitate to use arguments soft power advantage against our adversaries, we should be as publicly supportive of those striving for liberty and freedom in china and iran as we are vigilant about protecting human rights at home, what do you think, do you agree with dan hoffman, should the u.s. tomorrow say with places like china and iran while trying to maintain good diplomatic relations, i know that's a little difficult. what do you think about that. >> i absolutely agree with his words, you gotta remember in 2009 hillary clinton when she was secretary of state, publicly said that the u.s. is going to downplay human rights concerns in order to have good relations with china. just a few weeks after that,
9:38 am
first of all beijing leaders were ecstatic as what they called clinton's cow town and we know that from reporting, just a few weeks after clinton said that, china started to attack u.s. ships in international water, unarmed u.s. navy vessels. president biden should know he needs to stand up for human rights and when we heard the comments of john kirby, the nic coordinator on the protest, those words were dispiriting and disheartened people, not only in china but around the world as well. anita: it was a very input response from john kirby, you are right. let me ask about something that dan said in his quote, he said the u.s. should not hesitate to use our soft power. what do you think he meant by that? >> he met human rights and we had a series of presidents who refuse to vigorously promote human rights. remember ronald reagan who promoted soviet human rights to the people and soviet union and
9:39 am
that led to the failure of that regime, unfortunately, we have administration and administration, republicans and democrats who don't understand the value of human rights, that's remember china viewed the united states as an expert essential threat because of our values and our form of governance, the worried about the inspirational impact that we have on the chinese people. so we have to promote this, this is the core of the problems of our relations with the communist party. anita: yes, it sure is. gordon chang, thank you so much for your insights today, from the gait stone institute, senior fellow, we appreciated merry christmas to you. >> merry christmas, thank you so much. brian: the holiday season is a time of joy for many. but for some including many veterans christmas can take a toll on their mental health, our next guest works to make the holiday season a happy and healthy one for those heroes, we have some tips next.
