travelers stranded over the holidays nearly a week to get back home. lines at the airports growing, frustrated travelers losing their patients, desperate passengers forced to spend days sleeping on the floor at terminals while the airline cut 80% of its schedule at the height of the holiday travel season. and surrounding them, lost luggage. take a look at this, thousands of bags with personal belongings piled up at airports across the country. passengers got little satisfaction to contact the airlines because the phone lines were jammed up. even southwest flight crews had trouble getting through to find out about their own schedules. take a look at the screenshots, flight attendants on hold nearly five hours and nearly eight hours waiting to be cut through to scheduling. the scheduling department to receive their assignments. reports of pilots waiting on hold for 20 plus hours.

lisa boothe, what a mess! >> lisa: first of all, i eat too much during the holiday like chris farley in "the fat guy." i might die of circulation. but you know, this is obviously a complete disaster. i was reading through why this happened. there seems to be this errors with southwest primarily being point to point system the way they operate, the way they fly. these consecutive routes through different airports with ones jammed up cascading is a different effect on other major airlines. 70% of the flights canceled and compared to american airlines less than 1%. you obviously see a broader issue here. now on the receiving end of the department of transportation. they have the opportunity to face fines, penalty as a result of that. congress will be investigating as well. if they are in violation of their policies or the department of transportation rules may be a

class action lawsuit or various other punishment. >> i tell you what, what a mess. lauren, we talked about this and congress will investigate but pete buttigieg came out way late in my opinion to say he will definitely take care of this. there's got to be consequences but we don't know what that is yet. but at the same time we see the families onto floors and people not being able to get their medication all because southwest airlines could not get their technology up to date. >> lauren: you cannot just get another hotel room and let's say you are stuck in disney, for instance, because it is the week between christmas and new year's. and the prices are sky high. you brought up they are pete buttigieg, secretary pete buttigieg and he sang all the right things at the right time and we will come down hard on southwest. yeah, it is southwest bolt. they can't get the plane where the pilot is where the crew is in it is definitely there faults but why didn't he prevent this from happening? i do not care that he goes on vacation but i do care when there is a crisis and at the

height of it, he decided to go on maternity leave and i do care when there is issues with the rail strike, he flies over to portugal. now, it seems a little bit late. $7 billion went to this airline. >> cheryl: a half a billion dollars and that is our taxpayer money to be clear, everybody. but you know what, joey, i know you fly a lot, i fly a lot. it is not just the passenger suffering. there is this huge facebook by southwest pilot and he talked about the fact they can't get a hold of their schedulers. they couldn't get their own hotel rooms appear there is actually flight crews and the airport sleeping with the passengers. the gate agents are now in tears because they were being yelled and screamed at and cussed at pier this is our airports right now. this is awful. >> joey: i don't think

pete buttigieg is saying the right thing at the right time. i think he is saying that very unspecific thing at the wrong time. [laughter] because if you are in the administration and you see this coming, i would like to know what your metrics are for operating appropriately. then you have the ceo of southwest come out and give this apology that is just horrible. and i say horrible because that apology is about as useful as a first class ticket on a southwest airline. >> cheryl: i don't think they have first class. >> joey: exactly my point. beat up on southwest airlines, but my numbers, i did not know it was $7 billion but i thought it was over $50 billion to the airlines and triple p money. the airlines got people to retire early. they got folks to take smaller shifts and cut a bunch of hours down. and this time last year coming back to life and flying again. you look at it and say, what could pete buttigieg done this last year or what he didn't do

and where do we go from here? because the answer from southwest is we need to update our systems. but we funded for better systems, $7 billion and you can't figure out how to schedule your own employees? they turned $1.72 billion in profit, in profit and lot gotten without our money. so as a taxpayer, i'm invested in this company whether i want to be or not. the real problem here what really bothers me is when the democratic administration says, we will make them fix it. what they really mean is we will pay them to fix it. >> we will pay them and they won't fix it. >> joey: we will pay them. >> who was going to fly on southwest again? this is such a brand and their reputation is gone. >> you don't have to get me to

fly southwest. >> whatever the government investigation will be, they need to do right by the passengers and consumers to get back on the plane as new mom with formula feeding, what do you do? i only brought enough for that specific flight. how do you sit here 24 hours? in defense of employees, all's well so i'm in airline employee brett and it is so tough for them. and they are sweet has them. the same way we fail as consumers and passengers, waited in line and had no loyalty, it is canceled and you feel helpless and frustrated but the employees are feeling that as well. and haven't done much better either. so there see sweet needs to be answering to all of them to make those changes to earn their emps trust back because that is another problem. >> cassie you and i have something in common, used to fly for southwest airlines when i got out of college, a lot of hardworking people, pilots,

tenants, they are heartbroken. a lot of them have been stuck in their christmas is ruined. their families, but to your point the unions have failed. but the president did say enough is enough but the pilots have been screaming about this. they have been screaming about the technology behind their scheduling system. you can't find your cruise? you can't find a pilot? >> i feel like pre-covid flights went off on time. i've been traveling for a while with working and used to take off on time. everything has been broken and dysfunctional since the government decided to shut down the economy for covid. right? it seems like customer service and everything has gone off the rails sense. >> it is rare when your flight takes off on time. >> and we've seen a lot of passengers being angry and being
