hangovers and champagne is my problem when it comes to hangovers, it's just -- it's bad. pete: but it fixes the problem in the morning, because then you have a little bit more champagne, and your problem goes away. the question is how would you stop the cycle. head all to the bottom. pete: but you know what? you went after it in true form. by the end, we were ripping up the hills, all over the place with my brother. rachel: i want to come back as a hegseth child. [laughter] that sounds really fun. pete: they want to be -- my wife textedded me they've already got the dirt bikes out, and it's running. [laughter] i'm sure that'll be with nice and clean. they're total amateurs, by the way. the party really is just starting. in about 14 hours, we're going to be live here at the wild horse. it's fun, these mornings, when you start to realize it's going to be big tonight. it's going to be a great event. you see the drums behind the performers, it says brantley gilbert, he's going to be performing. and we just found out yesterday jelly roll is joining brantley gilbert -- will: i'm a big fan. pete: our program just got real cool, a lot cooler than us. we've got special guests out the wazoo showing up tonight, some

pete: exactly right. all right. we do have to move to some news starting with this fox news alert, catholics around the world remembering the life and legacy of pope emeritus benedict who has died at the age of 95. rachel: cardinal timothy dolan of new york writing: the legacy of pope benedict who we remember with love and gratitude. i ask every parish to offer a mass for the good lord's mercy upon his gracious soul and in thanksgiving for his vocation as successor of st. peter, may the angels lead him into pair a dice. what a beautiful -- paradise. what a beautiful sentiment. will: here's greg palkot with a look back at pope benedict's incredible life. ♪ ♪ >> when john paul ii died after more than 25 years as pope and the cardinals met to elect a successor, it took them just two days to give the job to a

[cheers and applause] >> reporter: for decades cardinal joseph ratzinger had been a key adviser to john paul ii, earning a reputation as a staunch conservative. as pope benedict vxith, he battled relativism, the idea what's true for one person might not be true for someone else. ♪ happy birthday to you ♪ >> reporter: pope benedict's visit to the united states will be remembered not only for his birthday celebration at the white house, a stop at ground zero and a maas at yankee stadium, but also by the way he addressed the sexual crisis so directly. >> this is absolutely

incredible, and and who is really -- if you cannot be priest. >> reporter: sex abuse would haunt his pay pass city as critics charged that his record on abuse was mixed. and there were the ore problems -- other problems as well, suggesting muslim -- islam could be a violent religion and lifted the excommunication for one renegade bishops since one of them turned out to be a holocaust denier. benedict district wasn't a politician. he was, above all, an inte intellectual and priest. pope benedict never expected to be much more than a priest and a university professor, but all that changed when he became pope. [cheers and applause] benedict made several international trips including germany, australia and portugal and was surprisingly well received by the crowds.

pope benedict made the first state visit ever of a pontiff e to the united kingdom in 2011 the with all the pomp that goes with it including a meeting with the queen. ♪ ♪ the pope addressed dignitaries and politicians in westminster the hall, a significant meeting in a significant location, the very place where almost 500 years earlier the catholic st. the thomas moore was condemned to death. although he was nearly 85 at the time and had just begun to use a cane many public, in march 2012 pope benedict also traveled to mexico, one of the largest catholic countries in the world, and to cuba. the church's activity has been severely curtailed in the mission, and the pope asked that catholics at least be allowed to run their own schools there. in one of the most important decisions of his pay pass city, he put john paul ii the on the fast track to say about hood -- saint hood, the last step before he potentially becomes a saint.

[applause] reporter it was his age and failed health that prompted the decision in 2013 for went district to step down the -- benedict to step down, a move that shocked the catholic faithful around the world as he was the first head to resign in almost 600 years. greg palkot, fox news. rachel: wow. what an amazing package. you know, we've had several people on, lauren green, really fascinating -- pete: father jonathan -- rachel: jonathan morris, of course, but we also had raymond arroyo, and this was his reaction. >> that idea of clarity, really, is the hallmark of his papacy, and it touched everything from worship to defense of the unborn, to the sex abuse crisis. and unlike a lot of the other reporters, they called him god's rottweiler because benedict was so firm on do defending the church, but that's what a pope

is supposed to do, guys. their job, they're the successor of st. peter, to defend and confirm their brothers in the faith. that's the job. and i think we've lost that along the way. the pope's job is not to be a nice guy or to kiss babies, it is the defend the teaching of jesus christ and the gospel, and benedict did that. will: there's the been various conversation cans throughout the morning about sort of the similar whrism of benedict -- symbolism of benedict the versus francis. it is a legitimate if debate about the future of the catholic church. what really spoke to me in what raymond said was he represented clarity and a sense of objectivity in an era of subjectivity. he said we're living under the tyranny of relativism where everyone's whim and personal, selfish vision of the world is what matters and is the top of your hierarchy. he said benedict stood for something different.

rachel: there is one truth, and that is what the purpose of the church, is to pursue and beauty. and, again, his passing really brings into focus and into question in some regards who will be that next voice to represent that conservative, more orthodox version of catholicism versus, in some ways, a little more subjectivity coming from pope francis. pete: those influences try to infiltrate any organization that stands for objective truth. rachel: yeah. pete: you don't do have to be a catholic, i'm a baptist the boy, to appreciate the apostolic tradition that goes back 2,000 years and the bedrock that is the catholic church to western civilization. and if you allow that organization to be diluted, you allow one of the pillars of western civilization that stood for that. rachel: or if you restrict the latin mass, this is one of the biggest controversies right now in the church. benedict's someone who would have deeply opposed that a, pope

francis, is the one that put that in place. much more to discuss and, of course, the funeral on thursday. will: this morning tv legend barbara walters has died. the journalist passed away yesterday at her new york home. walters leaves behind a prolific legacy. she was 93 years old. rachel: former "fox & friends" cohost elisabeth hasselbeck joins us now. we're so happy to have you here, couldn't have thought of a better guest to talk about this. >> well, rachel, you and i sort of have these parallel moments in life, and i'm so thankful to be with all of you today, certainly, to talk about the barbara walters. she was my tv mom, as i called her, id had the privilege of sitting with her for 10 years. a legacy in the news industry have, a trailblazer as everyone knows it. in the world of women and news and broadcasting overall, but a trailblazer in my heart. as much as we can say about her

professionally, i don't know that there are enough minutes to cover all that she has meant to me personally. rachel: tell us a little bit, you call her your tv mom. give us an example, what that actually means. >> sure. barbara was the first to explore all news, but if i brought her anything personal, she made it feel like national news, she was that interested in the daily lives. she went to bat for me when i didn't have maternity leave, never had it in my contract until barbara a walters went to swing big for me. rachel: good for her. >> to make sure that i had that covered. she would defend me anytime if she could. when something big came up, actually, when my time at "the view" a came to a close, barbara walters advocated for me of to have the position there. so she has always been tender-hearted to me. she coached me up when i spoke at the republican national convention, she said, just keep speaking. no one's going to be the

listening, but just don't stop talking. i thought, how harsh, barbara, everyone's going to be listening to me when i'm delivering a speech. but what she was advising me is that it's a moving format. i hadn't been there -- [laughter] i was so young, i was in my 20s, i'd never done this before, and i was speaking on a topic that i was passionate about, breast cancer. and i thought for sure everyone would stop -- can if shed had not warned me, i would have bee- [laughter] she held all of our babies, she was wise. we've had a number of conversations over the years, and i know that heaven welcomed an amazing angel. our saying was the best interviews and the best stories are in heaven. will: you know, one of the things people ask you what is your relationship like, for example, with the three of us when the cameras are off. it sounds like your relationship with barbara walters was authentic, genuine and heartfelt. and i know that in the last

couple years of her life, it sounds like it may have even taken another step for you. >> sure. barbara and i, i mean, i would always say, barbara, i'm still here bothering you. [laughter] and she loved me like a girl, and, you know, i had told her a number of times, barbara, you went in and spoke and spent time with people that a other people would shy away from. she had a tender, compassionate curious i. she just didn't have questions. barbara had compassion and curiosity for someone's story. of she'd sit with those that no one would want to sit with, those accused of the worst of the worst, those shunned by society, and barb a would allow them to tell their story in a way that had a heart and a heartbeat for what hay wanted to communicate. you know, the word says be a voice for the voiceless. barbara walters was that. she adopted her daughter, jackie, she's done things that we say we should reflect the love of our lord and savior, and i believe that she walked many a

way that was just like that this. and i told her. and we had honest conversations about faith. i'll never -- but here's what -- rachel: was she a woman of faith? >> yes. yes. i remember sitting on a plane with her flying to los angeles, and i drew what on "the view" would have been seen as a short straw. [laughter] we both pounded through, i think it was donald rumsfeld's biography. she was relentless in her research, always prepared. i learned to interview and know more about the person you were interviewing, that's barbara walters. you know this, rachel. fierce at a researching. in the moment without limit, and she asked me, you know, what -- do you really believe what you say you believe? she asked questions that were great -- the. pete: that is a great question. an honest one. >> an honest question. and it started 20 years back, the conversation about faith that went on until about 2 the weeks ago. 2 weeks ago. so i'm just thankful for her.

my heart is just broken that we don't have those questions here right now, but i feel so close to her because i know where she is. and i would encourage anyone out there if you're afraid to talk about faith with someone or you're worried about answering a question incorrectly, it's okay. just go for it and have the conversation. those are meaningful moments. i wrote a lot about barbara in point of view years back, and i could write a lot more. she is a woman of integrity. she cared deeply, personally about the women in this the industry. rachel: i was just going to say, that's such an important point because i think part of her compassion and understanding, the reason that she was so, you know, mentorrish, if you will, to you and even to me, you know, the amount of times that i've met her certainly not the same, but i always felt that. it was rough for her. she battled a lot to get where she is and really paved the way for you and i. >> yeah. and she never punished me for being a little bit more easy in my time than it was in her time

initially. she gave me a chance. pete: right. you could have a chip on your shoulder for that if you wanted to. >> i didn't have any experience compared to what she had. she allowed me to walk onto the set of "the view," she call me with the acceptance of the job. i'll never forget that phone call. and she every day would go through -- we'd be sitting with presidents, heads of state, dear friends of hers, colleagues, anyone that could have maybe judged how inexperienced i was at the time and over 10 years sitting under her with that mentorship, i feel like i got a masters in that barbara walters school of broadcasting. rachel: you couldn't learn more from that school. >> i learned to relentlessly pursue someone's story and allow them to tell it. i think she just had this harte for really allowing someone to share their story, and she made people feel safe and comfortable with her. she never judged. she'd go over my blue cards and nod. she gave me notes on how to

approach the queen of england, her majesty -- [laughter] she was my go-to. if i had something going on, i'd go to barbara. she was the first one outside of our family to know when we had a baby born, and she knew everything first. we've learn and will continue to learn from her, her legacy both in news and in love, and i will -- i'm a different woman because of barbara walters. rachel: that's so beautiful. pete: such a thoughtful message. perfect person to talk to in this morning. and also you're a thoughtful person. by the way, you're with family here -- >> yes. [laughter] pete: know you are. so great to have you. you could do any one of our jobs at a moment's notice. what's your new year's message? we're in your home town of nashville. >> you know, i'd say the message today, and i have a tender heart. i miss sweet barbara. we've had a week of just seeing

some brave stories come through as a family, and i would just say start new. his mercy renews each morning. create many your heart space for grace and give that away and just love as big as you can and don't withhold love, you know? we don't know our days and spend next year just looking to love people really well. rachel: the world would be a better place if we all did that. >> note to self as a mom. will: we're back with a fox news alert, an arrest is finally made in the murders of four idaho college students that rocked the country nearly seven weeks ago.

that suspect is now facing four counts of first-degree murder. laura ingle is live many pennsylvania where the suspect is being held without bail. laura. >> reporter: and good morning. you know, now that we have a faces and a name to go along with the suspect in this case, investigators are asking the public to come forward and give them any more information if you knew bryan kohberger and had any interactions in the last few months. as we take a look at that new mug shot that we have, the 28-year-old who was studying for his ph.d. in criminology, was arrested at a home believed to be his parents' in the pocono mountains by pennsylvania state police. investigators revealing he was living at an apartment in pullman, washington. that's just about 9 miles away from the crime scene in coo. -- in idaho. today the new york post is reporting that a fellow criminal justice student at washington state university says kohberger attended a class discussion about the murders and was quiet

and deadpan but seemed more animated in general after the quadruple murders. here's the prosecutor in idaho during friday's press conference. >> please ask the public, anyone who knows about this individual, come forward. call the tipline. report anything you know about him to help the investigators and eventually our office and the court system understand fully everything there is to know about not only the individual, but what happened and why. >> reporter: during the presser, investigators said they did recover a white elantra here in pennsylvania, they do not have the murder weapon and could not veal a motive explaining the next legal steps in this case. >> the process at this point is, since he was arrested in another state, he has the opportunity to the either waive extradition and return sol on tearily to the state of idaho, or if he prefers not to waive extradition, then we will publish ifuate

extradition proceedings through our governor's office. ing take a while for him to get here. >> reporter: now, kohberger is being held here in monroe county until his next court hearing. has tuesday. the father of one of the victims, steve goncalves, spoke with fox news last might about this major break in the case. >> my family feels like the first joy that we've had because it really is. you can't even smile when you have this over your head, and it feels like a little bit of weight has been relieved and things are on the right track and we're moving in the right direction. we actually have hope that we have somebody many custody -- of course, he's innocent until proven guilty, but that's a little better off hand we were, you know, 48 hours ago. >> reporter: and one of the interesting things that we're going to learn here, hopefully, in the next days and weeks is that genetic genealogy was reportedly used to help solve this case, track this suspect down. we will have will have a interview going on with the chief in moscow this morning
