it was a year when johnny depp's case was overheard a rock, found himself in a hard place, and the supreme court couldn't keep its opinion to itself. here are the ten most amusing, transcendent, alarming, scandalous, brutal, heartbreaking, inspirational, outrageous stories of the year. who can forget 2022 after 20 and 21? there's nowhere to go but well, probably just where it is. over the years,
2:01 am
the oscars have certainly had their shocking moments. but none of these have had the cultural impact of the slap heard around the world. so here's the scene. chris rock's on stage. he's presenting one of the awards, best documentary. the most interesting thing that has ever happened in the academy awards happened when most people went to get their second beer. chris rock spots. jada pinkett smith. will smith's wife sitting in the front row and she's rocking this bald head. i think she looks better without hair than most women look with hair. chris rock says, jada, i love you. she adds to can't wait. the entire audience laughs, including will smith. she shoots. will this look like him? like she is not amused and then will like. like hitting a light switch. jumps up on stage, stalks right to chris rock. then like a pitcher in the bottom of the knife rearing back stance. when violence spiked at the oscars.
2:02 am
that's the moment we knew crime was out of control in liberal cities. first, i thought it was staged. you know, i think like a lot of people in the audience, they're like, no way to that, really. just happen. then he starts cursing at chris rock and that's when you're like, oh, no. somehow chris rock had enough composure to take the shot. not freak out about it and go on with the show. that, my friends, is a professional. in any sane or sober world. will smith would have been escorted out of there. he just assaulted somebody on national television, no less. he wasn't kicked out of the oscars. he was given a trophy. will smith should be ashamed of himself. he could have been taken out in cuffs. that was a crime. what he did. it was chris rock. that convinced the lapd not to press charges. this turns into the social media nuclear bomb. which is more airtime than the oscars have gotten in like the last five years.
2:03 am
and then the consequences start rolling in. will smith preemptively resigns from the academy. the academy did bar him from all academy events for the next ten years. they should thank. will smith for making the academy awards relevant again. the oscars really missed an opportunity here by not letting one presenter get smacked every year. russia continuing its air and ground campaign against ukraine. russian troops completely overwhelmed the country's air defenses in just hours. did not have a land war in europe. on my bingo card for 2022. but here we are. ever since the soviet union died in the early 1990s, putin has been resentful. he sees ukraine as. part of the great russian empire and wants to restore it. putin became like this jilted ex-lover where she broke up with him, but he didn't break up with her.
2:04 am
so, like, ukraine has moved on with her life. but there's putin parked outside the house every night. february 24th, it happens. they invade. everybody reward from that. the markets, investors, the europeans. naito. i don't believe the world was prepared for the level of destruction that putin's military was about to engage. russia is going to kick ukraine's ass here, right? we all thought that ukraine would go down in a week, two weeks. that's not how it went. the fighting is intensifying once again, but defensive lines are largely holding in eastern ukraine. i think one of the biggest shocks of this war is how absolutely inept the russian military is. i remember seeing a line of trucks. a convoy, in fact, of military equipment that was 40 miles long. and it had stopped just a few days after the russians had gotten into ukraine. they were not prepared. their tanks were breaking down.
2:05 am
they were trading gasoline for vodka. the small and scrappy ukrainian army is ready for battle and they are not backing down. and at the helm of all of this is president zelenskiy. this is a former actor, television star turned politician, somebody who showed an incredible amount of courage and moxie. off comes the presiden suit and goes that green t shirt. the ukrainians mount a counteroffensive. and by and large, it's working. this is a further embarrassment to the russian military and they just start killing civilians sort of in retaliation. the pentagon says ukraine is making, quote, demonstrable progress as moscow scrambles to redeploy its forces. we started to hear the stories of the war crimes. another thing, the bodies that have been left behind. not only is russia failing embarrassingly on the battlefield. they are becoming a global pariah state diplomatically. russia's complete lack of success on the battlefield leads many to speculate
2:06 am
what the heck is going on in vladimir putin's mind? this is not good for their street cred. like, really? it's like us not being able to take over canada. russia will be making an incredible. deadly serious. mistake for the use of tactical nuclear weapons. the fact that we're talking about nuclear weapons should scare everyone. but here we are. and i don't know how long it lasts. here comes your first. who can forget pop quiz in 2022? scientists found fossils in the sahara that suggested this famous beast might actually exist. is it a bigfoot? b, chupacabra. or c, the loch ness monster? the answer when we return. fox nation's once a year sail with 50% off all yearly plans for a limited time. when i read what it took for yellowstone to be here so that we could all enjoy it,

2:12 am
but the supreme court said no, we'll take a look at it. everyone knew we had a different court. there's hope among pro-lifers, fear among others, that maybe roe versus wade will be altered or overturned. the leaked supreme court draft opinion that rocked washington is sending shockwaves to the campaign trail. and then came the leak. someone has given the draft opinion written for the majority by justice alito to the press. obviously, other branches of government have been leaking like sieves for years, but at the supreme court, this was unprecedented. they were going to overturn roe v wade in a full throated way. it set off such a reaction in so many protests in so many different parts of the country. there were threats against the justices. this was serious stuff. and very few people on the democratic side decided to speak up about it and say this is wrong. immediately, they launched an investigation to find the leaker.
2:13 am
lots of theories about who the leaker was. was this a rogue cleric who wanted to set off a civil war in this country? it could have been deep throat. we're not sure. hey, hey, it's justice roberts. wait. let tell you what happened. and then on june 4th, the decision came down. sure enough, 6 to 3 upholding that 15 week ban in mississippi. this really galvanized democrats, especially women, who didn't want the federal government telling them what they were allowed to do with their bodies. the gut reaction was they're taking our rights away. that was the gut reaction when really what the supreme court was doing was granting the state the authority to decide. the constitutional legal battle around abortion may have been resolved now by the supreme court, at least for a while. but the hearts and minds, persuasion and some of the political fights, they're going to go on for a long time. you you

so what? former boxing champ was caught punching a fellow passenger on a plane. the answer is a. iron mike tyson. mike tyson repeatedly punches a guy on a plane and that was on jetblue. imagine how angry he'd be if it was on southwest. it's been a bit of a ride for the republicans in 2022. historically, the party that's in power going into the midterms loses everything. the house, the senate, the car is. it always looks like the republicans are going to get the house. you know, it's really like, oh, the senate. you look across the country, there are some races, high profile senate races with prominent people running. pennsylvania, a battle between john fetterman and dr.
2:22 am
mehmet oz. fetterman wears hoodies and has this goatee, and he's all tatted up. he was tall and weird, which people liked because it's pennsylvania. imagine, like uncle fester if they just shot him up on human growth hormone. he is trying to really look like the working man. the problem for him is he doesn't really like to work. he was not a good mayor. he's never really had a real, real job. i have a lot of compassion and consideration for poor john fetterman and his health. if the guy was any slower, they'd make him president. anyone can beat fetterman anyone. and they're like, we're going to go with dr. oz. and you're like, oh, okay. aws had some traction issues with voters because it turns out they really want you to be from the place they're from. i've met dr. oz many times. he's a good man. he's a very good communicator. there's a great surgeon. i was shocked when he got into politics. how could a lie?

he was a rookie in terms of what to present, when not to present, and how to handle his wealth. he drank wine in a glass at a penn state tailgate party. gosh, that's $20 for current day. and this doesn't include a tequila. my wife is trying to accrue to taber and look at the price of feta cheese. what do you what do you do? a guy you lost half of america right there. what is crude attack? republican senate candidate tv dr. mehmet oz lost to democrat john fetterman. in the end, fetterman defeated dr. oz. it didn't really surprised me. most times, voters will vote for the guy who looks like the janitor over the guy who looks like your boss. the ohio race was really interesting, too. a battle between democrat tim ryan and venture capitalist author j.d. vance. tim ryan is the kind of democrat who doesn't really know what kind of democrat he wants to be. i'm not your regular democrat. i represent the hardworking people. j.d. vance wrote the bestselling book hillbilly elegy,
2:24 am
which talks about his family growing up dirt poor in west virginia, in ohio. you know, a lot of people can relate to that, me included. what's interesting is that j.d. vance was once embraced by the liberal elite in our country. i would like to announce that i'm running as a republican. you're a monster. he's a never trumper for a while. then he changes his tune. and trump doesn't let him hear the end of it. then the new york. times did a fake story today, big front page that j.d. wasn't sure if he wanted my support. j.d. is kissing my ass. he wants my. support of an elephant or a trump never predicts. the fox news decision desk can project that j.d. vance will win the senate race in ohio, defeating democratic congressman tim ryan. j.d. vance was the one trump endorsement i thought really did connect with what the voter wanted. the buckeye state had typically been a swing state, always up for grabs. right. they're not even bucking the blue man group to perform in ohio at this point. it's that red. in georgia, the leading candidate must.
2:25 am
surpass 50% of the. vote in order to avoid a runoff. big race in georgia, herschel walker versus raphael warnock. raphael warnock is the democrat. he's this smooth talking pastor. he gets elected by the skin of his teeth and he goes to washington representing georgia. donald trump threw his support behind herschel walker. they've been longtime personal friends. he's been on fox and friends. he seems like a good guy. that's the one thing about politics. it's a blood sport. walker had more skeletons in his closet than spencer gifts at halloween. politicians need to learn this. when you know you've done something, admit it and spin it. the senate race between incumbent senator, democrat raphael warnock and republican challenger herschel walker is headed for a december 6th runoff. church of the year runoffs. come on. the state of georgia has become that family that takes the same vacation every year. every year. i won't go into the same place. we'll go to the runoff in december. thank you, georgia.
2:26 am
four weeks after the november midterm election, georgia finally has its senate winner. the midterms, if you were a republican, were like the old show. it's the great pumpkin, charlie brown. that was the red wave. it was the great pumpkin. what did it have in common? the great pumpkin never showed up. people didn't say, wow, those republicans really got it together, man. they're making a lot of sense. what they said is, i'm tired of that. we got to do better. i need some divided government. and i think that's what we saw in the midterms. look, republicans took control of the house and basically they can slow down joe biden and his agenda. maybe they should celebrate. do you need to be more realistic and scale down these priorities in order to get something passed? no. you know the old adage like you can't fix grandpa biden says he's just going to stay the course. so if you like watching people shake hands with invisible men, you're in luck. joe rogan is a genius. joe rogan's career has been
2:27 am
sort of this windy road, doing a lot of interesting, cool things. the first time i heard of joe rogan, he was on stage doing stand up. it was kind of raunchy, kind of dirty, kind of great. i love joe rogan back when he was hosting fear factor. but the big superstar moment is when he launches into the stratosphere as a podcaster. but the joe rogan experience. do you think that you could do. tropic thunder today? would that be possible? oh, you could do it. the joe rogan experience was launched on youtube in 2009, and it became incredibly popular. i'm talking millions of views per episode. what makes joe rogan so popular is that he is unpredictable, which is kind of an anomaly these days in the broadcast world. says that a joint or is it a cigar? no. okay. you got this guy getting stoned, bringing on people who share a lot of ideas that aren't necessarily in line with the political narrative
2:28 am
of the moment. he does not care about where you come from, what your views are, if you have an interesting story or an interesting point. he'll welcome you on. there's been many attempts to cancel joe rogan. it's only made it more powerful. spotify reportedly has signed him to something like a $200 million contract. i love capitalism. again, this is for a podcast. who knew there was this kind of money going around? hey, spotify, joe. whatever you do, do not. back down. covid hits. the show goes on and joe rogan is saying some controversial things about vaccines and the disease and personal autonomy. rogan gets into this big dustup with sanjay gupta from cnn, who accuses him of taking a horse to wormer when in fact, ivermectin had use as an anti-parasitic. joe rogan got covid, and this is the story. he's in his fifties. he got what his doctor prescribed him and he's fully recovered. they immediately just all over this guy.
2:29 am
he's the worst person who's ever lived. he wrote the bad ending of the sopranos. get him out of here in. 2022. he had physicist and biochemist robert malone on. he's a guy that a lot of the medical community does not agree with. natural immunity is superior to the vaccine induced immunity. and oh, by the way. as a vaccinologist and an immunologist, i wouldn't expect anything different. so the malone episode results in hundreds of doctors sending an open letter saying that this show is a menace to public health. so as with all controversies in america, nobody really pays attention until celebrities start jumping in. neil young goes to spotify. he's like, you've got to choose between me or joe rogan. i thought hippies were supposed to be cool. and his pals like crosby, stills and nash say, hey, we're moving our music. joni mitchell is apparently getting involved. joni mitchell, brilliant as she is, is apparently not seeing the world from both sides now. all these free speech relics who in the sixties
2:30 am
and seventies were taking it to the man and demanding change. now they're the one track where we won't listen to a thing you say and you can't have any of our music. young man. like. how many people downloaded. rogan this week? how many people downloaded joni mitchell last decade? cohen duke they didn't listen. they kept rogan. they did make some adjustments. he pulled some old podcasts off of the platform, and now spotify will put a warning on covid related episodes for rogan. but by and large, rogan kind of goes unscathed. five months later, crosby, stills and nash quietly go back on spotify. so i guess all those social security checks weren't getting the job done. q how about another who can forget pop quiz? what streaming service was founded in 2022 on march 29 and discontinued on april 28? is it a, b plus, b, cnn plus or c, discovery plus?

you can only go back and rewatch one trial. you're going to watch o.j. or you're going to watch johnny depp. heard boom. depp heard in late spring. this was all america was talking about. their marriage was pretty short. it ended in mid 2016 and everybody lived happily ever after. not really. in 2018. amber heard wrote this opinion piece that was printed in the washington post, and it was all about her being the victim of an abusive relationship. she never mentioned depp, but everyone knew who she was talking about. he lost franchises. he lost pirates of the caribbean. he lost a harry potter spinoff. so then in comes the lawsuit from johnny. he's like, no, no, no. this is hurting my career. she was the abusive one. so this trial happens in northern virginia because of its vicinity. to the washington post. the judge in the case decides the whole thing can be livestreamed.
2:37 am
did we learn anything from judge ito in oj's trial? anything for the next eight weeks. the world had a front row seat to the depravity of the depp heard relationship. heard's legal team claimed that depp had abused her because of his addiction to drugs and alcohol. and then johnny depp said, i do love drugs and alcohol. but there was no abuse. i thought it was a bit sad to be on display for eight weeks on television. but they did it. just when you thought it couldn't get any more lurid. they were just getting warmed up. listen, i can't get over the poop on the bed. she had eaten johnny weed when she was a puppy and had bowel control issues. and sometimes that happened in bed. she tried to blame it on the dog. nobody thought that. if there's poop on the bed, the marriage is dead. i just. i really thank god for my divorce trial. it was just, you know, child's play compared to that.
2:38 am
what i did not fully appreciate until we were well into the trial is that there were groups of americans who were really into this. they called it trial by ticktalk. so people who who don't have an attention span can just watch 20 seconds, the different highlights of the trial, the different outfits that people wore in. terms of public perception. this thing was a landslide for johnny depp. the hashtag justice for amber heard had 21 million views, but justice for johnny depp had 5 billion. you just heard you speak to him in really horrible way. you called him a sellout. i just disagree. you could see her calculating. what kind of emotion should i convey? johnny depp came off cool as cucumber. people sort of really rallied around johnny depp. and most of the people that rallied around johnny depp were women. he was essentially the same kind of weird little do with a man bun when he walked into court the first day on a cross
2:39 am
as he was at the very end. so, of course, the jury agreed with america and johnny depp won the trial. he was awarded $15 million. but some view this as being a backlash to the metoo movement. what we do know is that everybody loves a car crash. actress amber heard says she has settled her defamation claim against former husband johnny depp. heard agreed to pay depp $1,000,000. i'm michael loftis. we'll be right back with more hollywood street justice. ron desantis has been governor of florida for four years, but this year he's getting more attention than ever. just about everything that happened in the news in 2020 to put him on the map a little bit more. in february, desantis supported the florida parental rights and education act. the democrats repurposed it as the don't say gay bill and all. hell broke loose. classroom discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity are at the center of debate in tallahassee.

so the law is we don't want you to teach little kids about sex stuff because they're little kids. he was trying to give kids the simple childhood their parents grew up with. and for that, he became a hero to a lot of parents. and then, as if to step into a mickey mouse sized mousetrap, disney takes the bait and decides to go after governor ron desantis. if legislation becomes law, it could. be used. to unfairly target gay, lesbian, nonbinary and transgender kids and families. rather than cower like a lot of republicans would have in the past or apologize. he went right back at them. you're no longer going to be this autonomous state with your own police force allowed to escape certain parameters. you're going to be one of the masses. desantis knew that no parent goes all the way to disney world because they want to go on a ride called snow white and the seven genders. then desantis turns his attention to the issue of the border.

september 8th began as any other day. dana perino and i went on the air early that morning and there were rumors that something was happening at the castle in scotland. when you began to see that the family had been called in from all corners of the earth, really, to come in to be with her, you realize there was something serious going on. there's some sad news to share with you. queen elizabeth, the second britain's longest serving monarch, has indeed died. she rules for 70 years. that's amazing. wrap your mind around that. what an amazing life she had. winston churchill stories. that's pretty cool. obviously, she's met every president since the forties, had dinner with ronald reagan. she has made it through decades of rule and through all of these social issues. the diana situation with charles. you never saw a dent in the armor. this is one of the classiest people. a magnificent warrior.

the united kingdom was gutted by this emotionally. how many people in that country have only known one queen? i've not been back to london in 35 years. it brought out the fact that there's still a little bit of england in me. there were the people lined up on either side of the road, ten deep in silence, respectful silence for the queen of england. her casket and on top of it, the crown. sitting there, you realize what it represents. that last moment where her coffin was lowered into the floor of the church and they cut away to the bagpiper walking down that hallway when they came back into the church, the floor had been closed. so you as a viewer, never saw a coffin disappear.

and just like that, england had a new monarch, king charles, the third. it still feels weird to hear the phrase god save the king. you've got to start minting new money because his face has got to be on the money. james bond now works for his majesty's secret service, not her. i don't even notice. these years now. he's king charles. i the ears went away. everything went away this season. reinvention at its best. there's a new sheriff in town, boys. king charles. india. what? coming back. to. heads up. here's another who can forget pub quiz. which adviser to president biden retired from public service in 2022? was it a pete buttigieg? b, anthony fauci. or c, merrick garland? the answer when we return. i'd like to thank our sponsor liberty mutual. they customize your car insurance,

the answer is b, chief medical adviser anthony fauci. so anthony fauci announced his retirement, but so did the rolling stones. in 1989. you would have thought that after trump was out of office, they would stop with the investigations. but they actually increased them. when you look at the 2022 news feed, here's why trump is going to be taken down or here's why he's guilty. coming up, our next guest is going to talk about how this is the end of trump. every time you went to commercial, batman was on the wheel of death and they were like, oh, he's not getting out of this one. no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. and that was batman when you came back from commercial as a free man. a new york state appeals court ruling, former president donald trump must answer questions under oath as part of a civil investigation into his business practices. there are so many people after trump, including new york attorney general letitia james. he inflated the value of his properties when he was borrowing

from the banks, but then turned around when he was doing his taxes and was like, actually, the property value. went way down. yes. almost like someone in the real estate game. he has made a name for himself by inflating who he is, what he has, and his very name. so that's not a huge revelation. so then you get a grand jury convening down in georgia because they're considering criminal charges against trump for the phone call he made to the georgia secretary of state. trump was pressuring officials to kind of find some votes for him. i just want to find 11,781, which is one more than we have. i don't know what it is with this guy in phone calls. maybe get a beeper. either that or call up elizabeth warren and learn how to send smoke signals. above everything, you've got the january 6th committee. they have a couple of republicans who are very anti-trump individuals. you got adam. cry me a river, kinzinger.
2:57 am
and then you got liz cheney, who i even she's supposed to still be there. all of this played out in primetime on our tvs starting in the spring. the select committee to investigate the january six attack on a united states capitol will be in order. it had a hollywood feel to it, and that's because they hired literally a former producer at abc news. like, here's all the b-roll from the capitol. here's stuff you didn't see. here's the director's cut. you know what i mean? i felt like i had bought the january 6th box set. you know, you have half of america that is amazed by the stuff that's coming out of it. and the other half that says, well, it's a group of people that all hate the former president trump. for most republicans, it was like must flee tv. the former president said the search at his mar a lago estate focused on documents he had already declassified. if you're like a hardcore trump hater, august 8th of 2022 was your super bowl. you see all the flashing lights

and you see all the fbi agents going in. maybe they had to raid donald trump's house because melania said something at a school board meeting. so after the raid, we find that donald trump decided to take some souvenirs from the white house. were treated to photos of the documents spread out across the floor. i think trying to show how many of them there were and some of the markings, classified or otherwise. i don't know if they were trying to embarrass trump more with the existence of classified documents or by drawing attention to that terrible commercial grade carpet. that's what i actually think trump is in trouble with, is with the decor. police. you have finger pointing with trump saying that they're in the wrong and the fbi saying, no, no, he hasn't been cooperating. and americans are again left wondering who's telling the truth. you want to make him more of a folk hero? do you want to do you want more and more? keep going after him. you know, everybody always says, oh, you know, when there's smoke, there's fire. i could be it could also just be like the mob and their pitchforks.
2:59 am
now, i am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the united states. you don't hold rallies for two years if you plan on not running for president. remember all the fights and the tweets and the. character assassinations and the. unfriend dings. and i don't talk to my relatives anymore. yup. we're doing it again, everybody. the trump organization, guilty of a widespread, long running systematic tax fraud and financial crimes scheme to cheat on taxes. switching gears real quickly to capitol hill, where the january six select committee just announced its criminal referrals. breaking now, attorney general merrick garland appointing a special counsel just moments ago to determine if criminal charges should be filed against former president donald trump. so in 2023, there's one thing we can be sure of. donald trump is still going to be all anyone's talking about. happy new year. happy new year, everyone. happy new year to everybody watching at home. or if you're one of my fans watching in a meth lab.
