were stabbed near times square. todd: get this, officers was serving his first shift before the attack. lawrence: lucas, what can you tell us about the attack. >> reporter: the new york police department is calling this an unprovoked attack two hours before the ball dropped. two officers received serious blows to the head. one officer engaged the suspect, shooting him in the shoulder. it took place on west 57th street and 8th avenue. one is eight year veteran suffered a head laceration. another one a rookie cop first day on the josh. he suffered a fractured skull. thee nypd officers were taken to the bellevue hospital. they were attacked by this machete outside of the times square.

safe ht act which almost eliminate cash bail. no bail for second-degree murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, aggravated dui, no bail for any of those crimes. almost anyone in the state was against this besides cook county which includes chicago. thankfully at the 11th hour the state supreme court halted the law going into effect. it was set to go into effect today. lawrence: i was shocked when i got this news this morning. we've been covering this own "cross country." seemli entire legislature was supporting this. i did not expect a liberal supreme court in illinois to block this. i mean this would have done significant damage to big cities like chicago. if you look at the stats right now, theft up 56%. robbery, 14%. burglary up 14%. you know what has been happening

every single weekend. death and destruction in this major city of chicago. it seems like it has fallen on deaf ears. todd: lower court ruled the law was an unconstitutional. the supreme court of illinois took it a step further, quote, would unfairly take discretion on bail out of hands of judges. just from a logical perspective, you don't need my lawyer hat on you need a judge to determine totality of circumstances, stealing a loaf of bread to feed your family, maybe there is argument to be made we don't need cash bail on that. any violence should not be open to discussion. literally you get new york city. if you can't afford bail, here is a thought, don't stab someone. seems pretty simple. carley: i can't believe with all the evidence we have when it comes to how cities are faring with crime, with all of that in mind illinois would go heat and eliminate cash bail for some of the most serious crimes you can

commit. do you know under this program, this law, jb pritzker signed into law, ankle monitors, chicago has the largest program for ankle monitors in the nation, would give criminals off 48 off the ankle monitors before police could respond. take the ankle monitor, two days. todd: a head start. carley: before police intervene to try to find you. you could be anywhere by that time. lawrence: carley, these ankle monitors are not monitored by the police department. they are monitored by a private company. there has been almost, almost 70% of these people with the ankle monitors, they just toss them off. they know how to disable them. >> this doesn't get nearly enough attention. lawrence: not enough coverage at all. this is just illinois. this is coming across the country. this is the big message, do criminals feel like they have leeway to commit crimes? repeat offenders, cory brooks, a

pastor on the roof top, trying to hold criminals accountable by building community centers, he says they need to be held accountable. watch. >> i believe in reconciliation. i know there is lot of recidivism, people need help and assistance to get back on a track. i believe that in my heart. i believe accountability. they talk about equity, criminals getting equity, they're not taking into consideration the victims. every single day we work in project hood with victims, families impacted by violent crimes, who are have having struggling times getting back on track. i wishing put more emphasis on victims of crimes, fixing neighborhoods than giving criminals more power. we need to move away from race but see them for what they are, that being criminals. these hardened criminals need to do the time, they need to be accountable. we're not talking about petty crimes here. we're not talking about that

situation. we're talking about hardened criminals. carley: todd and i interviewed a business owner from buffalo on friday and his business was looted on christmas day. because of the storm, a lot of people used that as an opportunity to loot because all the businesses businesses were . he had to watch his business get destroyed by these two looters through the security camera on his cell phone. can you imagine celebrating christmas in that way? he said he thinks the guys will get caught because the secure h security camera has good technology, clear shots of his face. he knows now they will not be held accountable. lawrence: they lost their police chief couple months ago, ran him out. he is a black police chief. carley: in buffalo? lawrence: in buffalo, they lost their police chief this is a town that has this liberal mayor, proposed all different reforms. police were trying to work with the community to bring them

away from a deadly substance coming in from mexico. it is the government's responsibility to protect all americans but right now they have failed miserably. in san diego they just announced 2375% increase in fentanyl related deaths in the last five years. the teen deaths are off the charts. we have kids 12 years old, 13 years old, 14 years old dying in their bedrooms from this deadly substance. guess what? the president and the vice president, they're not even talking to the public about the dangers of fentanyl. i remember the vp was talking to some kids one day about nasa, about space, which is great but why not talk to the kids about this deadly fentanyl that is killing at historic levels. carley: derek, the leading cause of death among young people right now. president biden is meeting with the president of mexico, january 9th. it will be very interesting to see if this issue comes up at all. let's hope it does. it is deadly serious.
